Can They Teach Each Other? : The Restructuring Of Higher Education And The Rise Of Undergraduate Student “Teachers” In Ontario, Jennifer Massey Dec 2014

Can They Teach Each Other? : The Restructuring Of Higher Education And The Rise Of Undergraduate Student “Teachers” In Ontario, Jennifer Massey

Jennifer Massey

Changes to public funding regimes, coupled with transformations in how universities are managed and measured have altered the methods for educating undergraduate students. The growing reliance on teaching fellows, teaching assistants, and increasingly undergraduate peer educators (administering Supplemental Instruction [SI] programs) is promoted as a means to achieve a greater “return on investment” in the delivery of postsecondary education. Neoliberal discourses legitimating this downloading of teaching labour suggest it offers a “win-win” solution to the “problem” of educating growing numbers of undergraduate students. It proposes universities can deliver the same curricula, and achieve the same “outcomes” (primarily measured through grades …

Controlling An Invasive Plant At The Edge Of Its Range: Towards A Broader Understanding Of Management Feasibility, Zdravka Tzankova Dec 2014

Controlling An Invasive Plant At The Edge Of Its Range: Towards A Broader Understanding Of Management Feasibility, Zdravka Tzankova

Zdravka Tzankova

Invasion biologists often think about feasibility of weed control in purely ecological terms, while land managers’ feasibility definitions are further informed by social, policy, and institutional considerations. We use the case of cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) in the Eastern Sierra Nevada in California to examine the origins and practical significance of differences between scientific and managerial definitions of feasibility. A serious invasive weed and a major ecological threat to the region, cheatgrass in the Eastern Sierra still exists in the kinds of low-density patches that are technically amenable to containment through active management. Yet land managers in this region dominated by …

Psychosocial Morbidity Associated With Bipolar Disorder And Borderline Personality Disorder In Psychiatric Out-Patients: Comparative Study, Mark Zimmerman, William Ellison, Theresa Morgan, Diane Young, Iwona Chelminski, Kristy Dalrymple Dec 2014

Psychosocial Morbidity Associated With Bipolar Disorder And Borderline Personality Disorder In Psychiatric Out-Patients: Comparative Study, Mark Zimmerman, William Ellison, Theresa Morgan, Diane Young, Iwona Chelminski, Kristy Dalrymple

William D Ellison

Background The morbidity associated with bipolar disorder is, in part, responsible for repeated calls for improved detection and recognition. No such commentary exists for the improved detection of borderline personality disorder. Clinical experience suggests that it is as disabling as bipolar disorder, but no study has directly compared the two disorders. Aims To compare the levels of psychosocial morbidity in patients with bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. Method Patients were assessed with semi-structured interviews. We compared 307 patients with DSM-IV borderline personality disorder but without bipolar disorder and 236 patients with bipolar disorder but without borderline personality disorder. Results …

Major cultural transformations took place in the southern Levant during the late prehistoric periods (ca. late 7th–4th millennia B.C.). Agropastoralists expanded into areas previously only sparsely occupied and secondary animal products played an increasingly important economic role. In the arable parts of the southern Levant, the olive in particular became increasingly significant and may have played a part in expanded exchange contacts in the region. Technological expertise developed in craft production, and the volume and diversity of status goods increased, particularly in funerary contexts. Mortuary and other ritual practices became increasingly pronounced. General study syntheses, however, rarely include more than …

Librarybox: The Easy Solution For Checkout Ebooks, Li Chen

Li Chen

Abstract: KSU Johnson Library purchased several ebooks in epub and mobi format. However these files don’t have URL links and cannot be accessed via library system nor can they be directly transferred to e-reader devices. How can we make these ebooks accessible for users? After an extensive research, we found out that “LibraryBox” is an excellent solution. LibraryBox can make the process of downloading epub or mobi files to e-readers directly. We purchased the LibraryBox in Nov. 2014. We configured it and transferred the epub and mobi files into LibraryBox and downloaded to the library e-readers. In this poster, we …

Assessing The Intended Participation Of Young Adolescents As Future Citizens, John Ainley, Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon Dec 2014

Assessing The Intended Participation Of Young Adolescents As Future Citizens, John Ainley, Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon

Dr John Ainley

In many Western countries there is concern about the level of participation of their citizens in civic life and the apparent lack of interest and involvement among young people in public and political life (Curtice & Seyd, 2003). The development of knowledge, understanding, skills, and dispositions that prepare young people to comprehend the world, hold productive employment, and be informed active citizens are among the characteristics that educational systems, schools, and teachers value and attempt to foster. However, countries vary in the status accorded to civic and citizenship education as part of school education and the relative importance of developing …

Postindustrial Societies, Brian Hoey Dec 2014

Postindustrial Societies, Brian Hoey

Brian A. Hoey, Ph.D.

The term postindustrial society presupposes categorizing society based on an economic means of classification. Its use rests on assessing the relative status of manufacturing industry as an economic sector. Significant adjustment in sectoral location and nature of employment precipitated by late-twentieth-century deindustrialization in the developed world led many social theorists and critics to predict broad changes throughout domains of everyday life. Some began to speak not only of sectoral transformation but also of an emergent ‘ postindustrial society. ’ Following earlier agrarian and industrial ‘ revolutions, ’ postindustrialism suggested yet another revolution that would again transform how societies were organized.

Building Skills, Knowledge And Confidence In Eating And Exercise Behaviour Change: Brief Motivational Interviewing Training For Healthcare Providers, Peta Stapleton, Elizabeth Edwards, Kelly Williams, Lauren Ball

Peta B. Stapleton

Obesity related health problems affect individuals, families, communities and the broader health care system, however few healthcare providers (e.g., doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, counselors) receive formal training in obesity prevention interventions. We examined the effectiveness of training healthcare providers in brief motivational interviewing (brief MI) targeting eating and exercise behavior change. METHODS: 163 healthcare providers participated. 128 participants completed a one-day experiential brief MI training workshop followed by electronic peer-support and a further 35 matched controls did not receive the training. RESULTS: Participant's knowledge of brief MI and confidence in their ability to counsel patients using brief MI significantly …

Residential Segregation, Housing Submarkets, And Spatial Analysis: St. Louis And Cincinnati As A Case Study, Sungsoon Hwang Dec 2014

Residential Segregation, Housing Submarkets, And Spatial Analysis: St. Louis And Cincinnati As A Case Study, Sungsoon Hwang

Sungsoon Hwang

This paper considers how spatial analysis of housing submarkets can advance research into residential segregation. While an emphasis on housing submarkets has been proposed as a new construct for modeling housing prices, its use in analyzing residential segregation has been limited. Recent advances in spatial analysis and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) present new opportunities for researchers to exploit the potential of housing submarkets as constructs that offer a more precise way to examine residential segregation. The paper synthesizes literature related to residential segregation and housing submarkets, and demonstrates how to delineate housing submarkets using publicly available data. It examines the …

Engaging Students In Disaster Relief Training Exercises, John Fisher, Muhaedin Bela Dec 2014

Engaging Students In Disaster Relief Training Exercises, John Fisher, Muhaedin Bela

Dr. John R. Fisher

Training and exercises are commonly used among first responders to prepare them for disasters and other emergency situations. Emergency management students from Utah Valley University in the United States shared what they have learned about disaster preparedness and response with university students in the Balkans. The six students divided into teams of two and taught three groups of 15 students each. The Utah Valley University students trained 45 Macedonian students about disaster response principles, search and rescue, triage, and emergency medical care. The training was followed by three simulated exercises. The American students were interviewed about their experience. They reported …

The book covers international experiences in border management; intelligence for homeland …

Northern Ireland’S Property Market Bubble: A Preliminary Analysis, Emer Gallagher, Derek Bond, Elaine Ramsey Dec 2014

Northern Ireland’S Property Market Bubble: A Preliminary Analysis, Emer Gallagher, Derek Bond, Elaine Ramsey

Derek Bond

This article applies a recursive regression technique developed by Phillips and Yu (2011) to examine recent property market movements in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland in the context of an asset market bubble. This technique, which interprets explosiveness in the price series as evidence of the existence of a bubble, provides a method for identifying not only bubble behaviour but also a dating mechanism. Statistically significant bubble characteristics are identified in both series. For the Republic of Ireland, a prolonged period of explosiveness is detected ranging from 1996Q2 to 2007Q2. Interestingly, the explosiveness is stronger in the …

Framing The Issues In Moral Terms Iii: Rights And Right Conduct, Robert Williams Dec 2014

Framing The Issues In Moral Terms Iii: Rights And Right Conduct, Robert Williams

Robert E. Williams Jr.

The development of a global human rights culture has had a profound effect on the way discussions of military ethics are framed. This is most apparent in the development of the “responsibility to protect” norm amid a broader debate concerning military intervention to stop serious human rights abuses. With policymakers and international lawyers, many just war theorists have adopted an understanding of military ethics centered on human rights. This essay describes the development of the rights-based perspective on the use of force and its impact on key questions regarding the resort to war and just conduct in war.

The Effect Of Public Pension Wealth On Saving And Expenditure, Marta Lachowska, Michał Myck Dec 2014

The Effect Of Public Pension Wealth On Saving And Expenditure, Marta Lachowska, Michał Myck

Marta Lachowska

In order to study whether public pension systems displace private saving, we use the quasi-experimental variation in pension wealth created by Poland’s 1999 pension reform. Using the 1997–2003 Polish Household Budget Surveys, we begin by estimating “difference-in-differences” regressions, where we compare household saving and expenditure across time and between cohorts affected and unaffected by the reform. Next, we estimate the extent of crowd-out by using two-stage least squares. We identify the effect of pension wealth on private saving by using the cohort-by-time variation in pension wealth that is explained by the reform. We find that one additional Polish zloty, or …
