Sistemas Politicos Y Bienestar Social: Brasil, Colombia Y Venezuela 2000-2010, Augusto De Venanzi

Augusto S De Venanzi

Micro-Entrepreneurship Debt Level And Access To Credit: Short Term Impacts Of A Financial Literacy Program, Claudia Martínez A., Esteban Puentes Dec 2014

Micro-Entrepreneurship Debt Level And Access To Credit: Short Term Impacts Of A Financial Literacy Program, Claudia Martínez A., Esteban Puentes

Claudia Martínez A.

Using a randomized control trial, we evaluated the effect of a financial literacy program on the level of debt and on formal access to credit in Chile. The program was implemented on a sample of beneficiaries of a publicly run micro-entrepreneurship program. We evaluated the program using administrative data with information on the debt level, interest rate and new loans provided by the formal sector. The program did not seem to have a significant effect on these variables.

"I See You On My Radar". Displays Of The Confirmatory Form In Technologically Mediated Interaction, Lisa Froholdt Dec 2014

"I See You On My Radar". Displays Of The Confirmatory Form In Technologically Mediated Interaction, Lisa Froholdt

Lisa L. Froholdt

This article investigates how speakers in maritime technologically mediated interaction utilize pre-scripted interaction. The analysis uses micro-analytical methods that have not been used in the analysis of maritime interactions since the study by Bailey et al. (2006). In contrast to Bailey et al. (2006) who have analysed interactions between co-located speakers on board ships, this article analyses interactions between speakers who are not co-located. Micro-analytical methods can shed light on sense-making practices that speakers display in pre-scripted user-device interaction as pointed out by Arminen (2005). The article advances the observations of Bailey et al. (2006) regarding the ‘confirmatory form’ that …

Tick Size Constraints, Two-Sided Markets, And Competition Between Stock Exchanges, Yong Chao, Chen Yao, Mao Ye Dec 2014

Tick Size Constraints, Two-Sided Markets, And Competition Between Stock Exchanges, Yong Chao, Chen Yao, Mao Ye

Yong Chao

We investigate competition between stock exchanges that choose the number of trading platforms to establish and the fee structure on each platform. U.S. exchanges compete for order flow by setting “make” fees for limit orders and “take” fees for market orders. When traders can quote continuous prices, the manner in which exchanges divide the total fee between makers and takers is irrelevant, because traders can choose prices that perfectly counteract any division of the fee. In such a case, order flow will simply consolidate to the platform with the lowest total fee. The one-cent minimum tick size constraints imposed by …

Student Loans And The Dynamics Of Debt, Brad Hershbein, Kevin Hollenbeck Dec 2014

Student Loans And The Dynamics Of Debt, Brad Hershbein, Kevin Hollenbeck

Kevin Hollenbeck

The papers included in this volume represent the most current research and knowledge available about student loans and repayment. It serves as a valuable reference for researchers and policymakers who seek a deeper understanding of how, why, and which students borrow for their postsecondary education; how this borrowing may affect later decisions; and what measures can help borrowers repay their loans successfully.

The Role Of Trade In Amplifying Crime, Catherine De Fontenay Dec 2014

The Role Of Trade In Amplifying Crime, Catherine De Fontenay

Catherine de Fontenay

There is enormous variation in crime rates across countries, greater than differences in income or inequality would suggest. There are currently no explanations for this magnitude of variation. We show that much of this variation can be explained using trade flows. We add a “Crime” sector to a traditional two-sector two-input Heckscher-Ohlin model. Under autarky, countries have the same crime rate, but free trade is found to increase crime in the resource-rich country and to reduce crime in the labor-rich country by an equal amount. The negative externality from increased crime can be strong enough to cancel out the gains …

Measuring Globalization: Better Trade Statistics For Better Policy, Susan Houseman, Michael Mandel Dec 2014

Measuring Globalization: Better Trade Statistics For Better Policy, Susan Houseman, Michael Mandel

Susan N. Houseman

Understanding the impacts of globalization requires good data, and national statistical systems were not designed to measure many of the transactions occurring in today’s global economy. The chapters in this volume and its companion volume identify biases and gaps in national statistics, examine the magnitude of the problems they pose, and propose solutions to address significant biases and fill key data gaps.

Research Note: The Accuracy Of The Core Files For Studying Nonprofit Location: How Many Nonprofits Are There?, Lindsey Mcdougle Dec 2014

Research Note: The Accuracy Of The Core Files For Studying Nonprofit Location: How Many Nonprofits Are There?, Lindsey Mcdougle

Lindsey McDougle

Studies show that the distribution of nonprofits varies considerably across communities. Affluent communities tend to have ample nonprofit resources and highly diverse nonprofit landscapes, while low-income communities often lack the variety of nonprofits found within wealthier areas. As a result of these differences, scholars have suggested that geographic unevenness in the presence of nonprofits may lead to extreme inequities and inefficiencies in how nonprofit services are accessed and administered. Although these concerns certainly warrant serious attention, several limitations have been acknowledged with the National Center for Charitable Statistic’s (NCCS) Core Financial Files—which have been the primary data source used to …

Networks Of Digital Humanities Scholars: The Informational And Social Uses And Gratifications Of Twitter, Anabel Quan-Haase, Kim Martin, Lori Mccay-Peet Dec 2014

Networks Of Digital Humanities Scholars: The Informational And Social Uses And Gratifications Of Twitter, Anabel Quan-Haase, Kim Martin, Lori Mccay-Peet

Lori McCay-Peet Dr.

Big data research is currently split on whether and to what extent Twitter can be characterised as an informational or social network. We contribute to this line of inquiry through an investigation of digital humanities scholars’ uses and gratifications of Twitter. We conducted a thematic analysis of 25 semistructured interview transcripts to learn about these scholars’ professional use of Twitter. Our findings show that Twitter is considered a critical tool for informal communication within DH invisible colleges, functioning at varying levels as both an informational network (learning to ‘Twitter’ and maintaining awareness) and a social network (imagining audiences and engaging …

The Urban, Infrastructural Geography Of ‘The Cloud’ Looking At Where Data Moves, Where It *Lives*, Alan Wiig

Alan Wiig

he relationship between data to space extends beyond the network equipment, services, and mobile devices that transmit and present information to a user. Pervasive wireless connectivity and ubiquitous computing, as ‘the cloud’ are central, common elements of contemporary urban life. Data centers translate, as it were, between individuals and their experience of the city by mediating experiences through digital augmentation. An example of this is Google Maps’ locative ability to place the user on the map and then orient said user to wherever they need to go.

Mentoring In The Social Context: Mentors' Experiences With Mentees' Peers In A Site-Based Program, Julia Pryce Dec 2014

Mentoring In The Social Context: Mentors' Experiences With Mentees' Peers In A Site-Based Program, Julia Pryce

Julia Pryce

The primary mechanism by which mentoring promotes positive outcomes is typically considered to be the one- to-one relationship between mentor and youth. However, many mentoring relationships, particularly those in site-based programs, unfold within and are influenced by the larger contexts in which mentoring takes place. In the present study, we examined 161 first-person accounts written by college students serving as Lunch Buddy mentors in an elementary school-based mentoring program. This examination aims to glean insights into mentors' experiences of and responses to their mentees' peers as they carried out the mentoring relationship in a school cafeteria setting, and the ways …

Aging Out Of Care In Ethiopia: Challenges And Implications Facing Orphans And Vulnerable Youth, Julia Pryce Dec 2014

Aging Out Of Care In Ethiopia: Challenges And Implications Facing Orphans And Vulnerable Youth, Julia Pryce

Julia Pryce

This interpretive study examines the experiences of 54 Ethiopian emerging adults who had aged out of institutional care facilities. Findings are derived from interviews and focus groups in which questions and activities focused on the challenges faced by participants and the supports they relied on throughout the transition process. These young adults reported facing many chal- lenges upon leaving care, including difficulty finding gainful and interesting employment, a lack of many basic life skills, difficulty finding a support network, and significant stigma in the community due to their background in care. These challenges led to problems in creating any security …

Ebrary On The Radar, Julie Linden, Angela Sidman, Sarah Tudesco

Julie Linden

Yale University Library has a long history with ebrary, subscribing to its collection of academic ebooks since the days when this product was known as “Ebrarian.” Long since rebranded as Academic Complete, and now owned by ProQuest, over the ensuing thirteen years the package has grown to include well over 100,000 titles. Regular review of Yale’s usage data demonstrated that Academic Complete was well used and delivered a great deal of content for a low cost per use. Balancing this, however, was a well-established perception among librarians that users found the interface difficult to navigate and that the subscription content …

The Impact Of Sanctions On Trade: An Application To The European-Russian Case, Research In International Trade Dec 2014

The Impact Of Sanctions On Trade: An Application To The European-Russian Case, Research In International Trade

Research in International Trade

This  paper  analyzes  the  impact  of  the  European-Russian   sanctions  of  2014  on  the European export patterns. By applying a gravity model to disaggregated,  monthly data I assess  multiple  effects  that  possibly  kick  in  during  a  sanctions  episode.  First  of  all  I empirically  confirm  the  expectation  that  the  exports  of sanctioned  products  to  Russia significantly  decreased.  The impact  of the European  embargo  however  appears  to be limited compared to the effect of the Russian boycott. Second, evidence is found for the sanction  busting  argument,  as the European  exports  of Russian  blocked  goods  to the Eurasian Customs Union significantly increased. Further …

Liquidity, Systemic Risk, And The Bankruptcy Treatment Of Financial Contracts, Riz Mokal Dec 2014

Liquidity, Systemic Risk, And The Bankruptcy Treatment Of Financial Contracts, Riz Mokal

Riz Mokal

Parties to repos, and to swaps and other derivatives are accorded privileged treatment under the bankruptcy laws of several dozen countries. Several key international “best practice” standards urge legislators in other jurisdictions to provide likewise. The beneficiaries of these privileges are solvent counterparties enabled, unimpeded by bankruptcy moratoria, to implement close-out netting arrangements and to dispose of collateral. The purported rationale is mitigation of systemic risk.
Taking a broad international perspective, this Article explores the “domino” contagion view of distress that motivates the privileges. This view derives from the outdated “microprudential” understanding of systemic risk, and is theoretically flawed and …

Development And Evaluation Of The Telephone Crisis Support Skills Scale, Taneile Kitchingman, Coralie Wilson, Peter Caputi, Alan Woodward, Tara Hunt Dec 2014

Development And Evaluation Of The Telephone Crisis Support Skills Scale, Taneile Kitchingman, Coralie Wilson, Peter Caputi, Alan Woodward, Tara Hunt

Taneile Kitchingman

Background: Although telephone services continue to play an important role in the delivery of front-line crisis support, published evidence of the standardized assessment of such services does not exist to date. Aims: To describe the development of the Telephone Crisis Support Skills Scale (TCSSS), an instrument to assess workers’ intentions to use recommended skills with callers, and to evaluate its factor structure and reliability.
Method: TCSSS items were mapped to a national telephone crisis support practice model. A national sample of workers (n = 210) completed the TCSSS as part of a larger online survey. Principal axis factoring was used …

Teaching Progress: A Critique Of The Grand Narrative Of Human Rights As Pedagogy For Marginalized Studentsitle, Mikaila Arthur, Robyn Linde Dec 2014

Teaching Progress: A Critique Of The Grand Narrative Of Human Rights As Pedagogy For Marginalized Studentsitle, Mikaila Arthur, Robyn Linde

Mikaila Mariel Lemonik Arthur

With the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, education about human rights became an important focus of the new human rights regime and a core method of spreading its values throughout the world. This story of human rights is consistently presented as a progressive teleology that contextualizes the expansion of rights within a larger grand narrative of liberalization, emancipation, and social justice. This paper examines the disjuncture between the grand narrative on international movements for human rights and social justice and the lived experiences of marginalized students in urban environments in the United States. Drawing on …

Dubious Dealings – The Surprising Story Of The 1846 Sockdologer.

William B. Krohn

The earliest piece of terminal fishing tackle made in the U.S.A. was a spring hook (with a knock-out punch = sockdologer) stamped 1846. There was been a considerable uncertainty and controversy surrounding who invented, made, distributed, and sold this early fishing lure. This article, relying heavily on a period police report published at the time in New York City newspaper, solved the mystery.

Administrative Research Support Service, Linda Kott, Vickie Mix, Nancy Marshall Dec 2014

Administrative Research Support Service, Linda Kott, Vickie Mix, Nancy Marshall

Vickie Mix

In 2012, South Dakota State University Librarians began an Administrative Research Support Service to provide research expertise to time-strapped administrators. The service was created from a recognition that the university benefits from informed decision making. The University's administrators, while typically experienced researchers in their disciplinary areas, may lack the time or expertise to conduct literature searches in support of institutional decision making. The Administrative Research Support Service provided a mechanism for a quick response research service to supplement other information gathering efforts by university administrators. This paper provides a case study exploring the benefits and challenges of the service.

Administrative Research Support Service, Linda Kott, Vickie Mix, Nancy Marshall

Nancy Marshall

Public services librarians at South Dakota State University (SDSU) piloted a project to provide personalized reference services to university administrators. The goals of the Administrative Research Support Service were to provide quality information results that inform institutional decision making, to assist SDSU administrators in focusing their research questions, to provide a convenient venue for SDSU administrators to request library research, and to highlight the library’s contribution to SDSU’s mission. During a rollout of the service in 2012, five librarians contributed to the service and ten projects were completed. This initial offering of the service fostered connections between librarians and administrators, …

Design/methodology/approach – Twenty-one individual web pages in the CSUN test instance of PKP’s OJS version 2.4.0 used in three back-end journal development user roles were examined using three web-accessibility tools (WAVE, Fangs, Functional Accessibility Evaluator). Errors in accessibility were then logged and mapped to specific Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) criteria. Findings – In all, 202 accessibility errors were reported across the 21 OJS …

Defining Information Policy: Relating Issues To The Information Cycle, Judith Pasek Dec 2014

Defining Information Policy: Relating Issues To The Information Cycle, Judith Pasek

Judith E Pasek

The emerging field of information policy is difficult to define, given that issues often overlap other policy areas. The most useful definitions of information policy refer to steps in the information cycle, from creation to use. Another approach to delimiting the scope of information policy has focused on classification of issues. This article combines these approaches by relating information policy issues to steps of the information cycle. These issues are underpinned by economics, and influenced by differing perspectives of interested parties. The importance of information policy to academic librarians is briefly discussed.
