The Influence Of Unrelated And Related Diversification On Fraudulent Reporting, Subrata Chakrabarty Dec 2014

The Influence Of Unrelated And Related Diversification On Fraudulent Reporting, Subrata Chakrabarty

Subrata Chakrabarty

This study suggests that unrelated diversification has a positive influence on the probability of fraudulent reporting whereas related diversification has a negative influence on the probability of fraudulent reporting. The strength of the influence of these corporate level strategies is contingent on the moral character of the firm. Unrelated diversification provides opportunity for financial innovation within the firm's internal capital market, which can result in fraudulent reporting. This is more likely when the moral character of the firm is driven by a conscienceless financial self-interest motive, as implied by the firm's contempt toward the larger community (in terms of damage …

Organizational Support And Citizenship Behaviors: A Comparative Cross-Cultural Meta-Analysis, Dan S. Chiaburu, Subrata Chakrabarty, Jiexin Wang, Ning Li Dec 2014

Organizational Support And Citizenship Behaviors: A Comparative Cross-Cultural Meta-Analysis, Dan S. Chiaburu, Subrata Chakrabarty, Jiexin Wang, Ning Li

Subrata Chakrabarty

We integrate and extend the literatures on perceived organizational support (POS), organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), and comparative crosscultural management by examining whether the POS–OCB relationship is contingent on national culture. In social exchanges between the organization and its employees, employees are likely to act as good citizens in reciprocity to the support provided by their organization. At the same time, it is possible that national culture couches and hence modifies the strength of these exchanges. We use meta-analysis to test the hypotheses. To test national culture as moderator, we use country-level cultural dimensions from Hofstede. Results suggest that the POS–OCB …

Comparing Virtue, Consequentialist, And Deontological Ethics-Based Corporate Social Responsibility: Mitigating Microfinance Risk In Institutional Voids, Subrata Chakrabarty, A E. Bass Dec 2014

Comparing Virtue, Consequentialist, And Deontological Ethics-Based Corporate Social Responsibility: Mitigating Microfinance Risk In Institutional Voids, Subrata Chakrabarty, A E. Bass

Subrata Chakrabarty

Due to the nature of lending practices and support services offered to the poor in developing countries, portfolio risk is a growing concern for the microfinance industry. Though previous research highlights the importance of risk for microfinance organizations, not much is known about how microfinance organizations can mitigate risks incurred from providing loans to the poor in developing countries. Further, though many microfinance organizations practice corporate social responsibility (CSR) to help create economic and social wealth in developing countries, the impact of such CSR practices remains an underdeveloped area of inquiry. We use a normative ethics lens to develop an …

Migrant Smuggling, Anne T. Gallagher Ao Dec 2014

Migrant Smuggling, Anne T. Gallagher Ao

Anne T Gallagher

Migrant smuggling -the unauthorized movement of individuals across national borders for the financial or other benefit of the smuggler - has emerged as a major issue of concern for States and the international community. This chapter provides a detailed analysis of the specialist legal framework around this issue that developed within the framework of transnational criminal law. It then examines the broader rules that come into play in relation to several migrant smuggling issues of high contemporary significance: interception and rescue at sea (with specific reference to international maritime law) and protection and return of smuggled migrants (with specific reference …

The Impact Of Web 2.0 In Education And Its Potential For Language Learning And Teaching, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

The arrival of technology has transited the path for an increased use of the Web, allowing for access to diverse kinds of information and materials. With this advent of technology, a significant number of distinct technologies have been introduced to assist in human communication and interaction. Since the genesis of Web 2.0 technologies, people all over the world now have the Internet at their finger tips, and can execute communicative acts with little or no difficulty. In educational contexts, Web 2.0 is making great in-roads even though its full effectiveness still needs to be further researched in the said environments. …

The Leadership Leap: A New Approach For Homeland Security, R. Jeffery Maxfield, Rodger Broome, John R. Fisher

R. Jeffery Maxfield

The world is in chaos, and unfortunately, this most likely will continue. Recent news reports are replete with stories of crises. These events demonstrate the implicit and explicit need for leadership. We believe these crises and their accompanying uncertainty are the reasons people have sought strong leaders – to bring order and sanity to an otherwise uncontrollable world. This is particularly true in homeland security and the emergency services.

emotional deficits that keep them from meaningfully interacting with their families and peers. Children with autism, by nature of their disability, have self-indulgent interests that can not only prevent them from developing relationships, but also expose them to ridicule if their classmates, peers, or siblings do not have an understanding of ASDs. Although there have been quite a few studies concerning the prevalence of autism among siblings, there have been limited studies regarding the extent to which the disability affects the sibling relationship.

Mandate And Paternalism: A Theory Of Large Elections, Marco Faravelli, Priscilla Man, Randall Walsh Dec 2014

Mandate And Paternalism: A Theory Of Large Elections, Marco Faravelli, Priscilla Man, Randall Walsh

Priscilla Man

We propose a game theoretic costly voting model of large elections that incorporates the assumption that mandate matters. This innovation is motivated by empirical evidence that US Representatives with larger victory margins on average vote in a more partisan manner. If voters are paternalistic, this new model predicts strictly positive limiting turnout rates as the population grows arbitrarily large. The model also preserves stylized comparative statics results of costly voting models, including the underdog effect and the competition effect. Finally, we develop an innovative computational strategy to solve the model for large, finite, electorates and show that our results are …

Finance-Led Growth In The Oecd Since The 19th Century: How Does Financial Development Transmit To Growth?, James B. Ang Dec 2014

Finance-Led Growth In The Oecd Since The 19th Century: How Does Financial Development Transmit To Growth?, James B. Ang

James B Ang

It is well established in the literature that financial development (FD) is conducive to growth, and yet the channels through which FD affects growth are not well understood. Using a unique new panel data set for 21 OECD countries over the past 140 years, this paper examines the extent to which FD transmits to growth through ideas production, savings, fixed investment, and schooling. Unionization and agricultural share are used as instruments for FD. The empirical results show that FD influences growth through all four channels. In particular, ideas production is found to be the most important channel through which FD …

Studying The Effects Of Non Oil Exports On Targeted Economic Growth In Iranian 5th Development Plan: A Computable General Equilibrium Approach, Rasoul Bakhsi Dastjerdi Dr., Reza Moosavi Mohseni Dr., Somayye Jafari

Reza Moosavi Mohseni

we investigate the effects of non oil export on Iran’s economic growth using a computable general equilibrium (CGE) and study which tradable sectors has a larger share in reaching to targeted growth rate 8% in 5th socio economic development plan. We calibrate the model by GAMS (with emphasis on foreign trade sector). Numerical solution to the model is based on Iran’s social accounting matrix (SAM). Results show that 2.03% of targeted economic growth rate is achieved by encouraging a 6% growth in export. It also be mentioned that industry and mine sector in Iran, has more influence on growth than …

Book Review: Monique W. Morris, Black Stats: African Americans By The Numbers In The Twenty-First Century, Nick J. Sciullo Dec 2014

Book Review: Monique W. Morris, Black Stats: African Americans By The Numbers In The Twenty-First Century, Nick J. Sciullo

Nick J. Sciullo

Monique Morris’s short volume contains a wealth of information for scholars. Black Stats: African Americans by the Numbers in the Twenty-First Century is an invaluable resource for researchers, and is highly recommended for undergraduates, graduates, media professionals, and activists. Morris’s work contributes to the ongoing discussion about black identity, representations in media, and intersection with other identity markers such as gender, religion, class. While not strictly a text about communication studies or rhetorical studies, the author’s text complicates the ways in which black people are represented in the media by using statistics to challenge simplistic notions of identity in film, …

What Is The Attraction? Pornography Use Motives In Relation To Bystander Intervention, John D. Foubert, Ana J. Bridges Dec 2014

What Is The Attraction? Pornography Use Motives In Relation To Bystander Intervention, John D. Foubert, Ana J. Bridges

John D. Foubert

Use of pornography is common among adolescents and young adults, with most men and a growing number of women viewing regularly. A vast body of research suggests pornography use is associated with multiple attitudinal and behavioral variables. One of those associations, for both men and women, is higher pornography use is correlated with a lower likelihood of intervening to prevent sexual assault. The present study explored how motives for viewing pornography related to male (n = 139) and female (n = 290) college students’ willingness and efficacy to intervene to help prevent a sexual assault from occurring. We found that …

Precursors To And Pathways Through Conversion: Catalytic Experiences Of Born Again Christian College Students, John D. Foubert, Matthew W. Brosi, Angela Watson, Dale R. Fuqua

John D. Foubert

Born again Christians are a significant religious population in the United States, and throughout the world. The process by in which a born again identity is assumed is not clearly described in the research literature. Therefore, we asked 18 born again Christian college students a series of questions designed to uncover what led to their identity of being born again. Responses fell into three overarching themes. First, participants described exposure within relationships to God’s principles. Second, participants noted the influence of introspection and reflection on their lives apart from the influence of God. Third, participants had an active response in …

Listening As Religious Practice (Part One): Exploring Quantative Data From An Empirical Study Of The Cultural Habits Of Music Fans, Vaughan S. Roberts, Clive Marsh

Vaughan S Roberts

This article explores and reflects upon the role that music consumption may be playing in the flexible field of cultural expression, identity formation, and meaning-making activity in the West, as overt commitment to organised religion continues to decline and prove fragile. Using quantitative data from a 2009–2010 study of 231 music users, the authors locate and analyse the respondents’ declarations about their listening practices in relation to their other socio-cultural habits and life commitments. The article explores the genres and themes of music listened to, the means by which the music is accessed, the frequency of listening, and the scale …

Decriminalized Prostitution In Rhode Island: Impunity For Violence And Exploitation, Donna M. Hughes Dr., Melanie Shapiro Esq Dec 2014

Decriminalized Prostitution In Rhode Island: Impunity For Violence And Exploitation, Donna M. Hughes Dr., Melanie Shapiro Esq

Donna M. Hughes

For 29 years (1980 to 2009) prostitution was decriminalized in Rhode Island. Lack of laws or regulations created a permissive legal, economic and cultural environment for the growth of sex businesses. During this time, sexual exploitation and violence against women and girls were integrated into the economic development of urban areas. The number of sex businesses grew rapidly during this period. Organized crime groups operated brothels and extorted money from adult entertainment businesses. Rhode Island became a destination for pimps, traffickers, and other violent criminals. The lack of laws impeded police from investigating serious crimes.

Some Matlab Routines To Compute Crps And Quantile Weighted Ps, Michael S. Smith Dec 2014

Some Matlab Routines To Compute Crps And Quantile Weighted Ps, Michael S. Smith

Michael Stanley Smith

Three routines to compute the CRPS of Gneiting and Raftery (JASA 2007) and the quantile weighted probability score (QWPS) extension in Gneiting and Ranjan (JBES, 2011). They are based on numerical integration as discussed in the Appendix of Smith and Vahey (2015), and I have found them to be much more accurate than using Monte Carlo approximation to the difference of two expectations, as advocated in Panagiotelis and Smith (IJF, 2008).

Copula Modelling Of Dependence In Multivariate Time Series, Michael S. Smith Dec 2014

Copula Modelling Of Dependence In Multivariate Time Series, Michael S. Smith

Michael Stanley Smith

Almost all existing nonlinear multivariate time series models remain linear, conditional on a point in time or latent regime. Here, an alternative is proposed, where nonlinear serial and cross-sectional dependence is captured by a copula model. The copula defines a multivariate time series on the unit cube. A drawable vine copula is employed, along with a factorization which allows the marginal and transitional densities of the time series to be expressed analytically. The factorization also provides for simple conditions under which the series is stationary and/or Markov, as well as being parsimonious. A parallel algorithm for computing the likelihood is …

Cyclical Downturn Or Structural Disease? The Decline Of The Italian Economy In The Last Twenty Years, Enrico Saltari, Giuseppe Ciccarone Dec 2014

Cyclical Downturn Or Structural Disease? The Decline Of The Italian Economy In The Last Twenty Years, Enrico Saltari, Giuseppe Ciccarone

Enrico Saltari

Italy is experiencing at present the most serious economic recession of the post-war period. Between 2008 and 2013 national income fell by 9 per cent, per capita incomes by 11 per cent, and industrial production by 25 per cent; and unemployment doubled. In this essay we argue that, while this dramatic situation has been made worse by the policies of ‘expansive austerity’, its origins can be traced back to changes that took place in the 1990s (notably globalization, competition for emerging new markets and the diffusion of new technologies – ICT) to which Italy failed to react speedily or effectively …

This chapter will review and analyze the associated laws and policies that are currently in place or have been proposed to ensure proper execution of security measures for mobile and other devices while still protecting individual privacy. This chapter will address the fact that as the American society significantly uses mobile devices, it is imperative to understand the legal actions surrounding these technologies to include their associated uses. This chapter will also address the fact that with 9/11 in the not so distant …
