Saving Lives With Stem Cell Transplants, Damien Sheehan-Connor, Ted C. Bergstrom, Rodney Garratt Dec 2014

Saving Lives With Stem Cell Transplants, Damien Sheehan-Connor, Ted C. Bergstrom, Rodney Garratt

Ted C Bergstrom

Blood stem cell transplants can be life-saving for some patients, but the chances of finding a matching donor are small unless a large number of potential donors are evaluated. Many nations maintain large registries of potential donors who have offered to donate stem cells if they are the best available match for a patient needing a transplant. An alternative source of stem cells, umbilical cord blood, is stored in banks. Everyone faces a small probability of needing a transplant which will increase their likelihood of survival. The registries and cord blood banks are thus an interesting example of a pure …

An Elasticity Analysis Of Fertility Rates In Australia, Chris Lloyd Dec 2014

An Elasticity Analysis Of Fertility Rates In Australia, Chris Lloyd

Chris J. Lloyd

In the recent decade, Australia’s fertility rebounded. Meanwhile, many pronatalist policies are implemented. We are interested in the effectiveness of these policies. To this end, we obtained data to estimate the age and parity specific fertility rates for married and unmarried mothers as well as age-specific marriage and divorce rates. Based on these rates, we then construct a stochastic model for total fertility rate (TFR). Our aim is to identify the group(s) which may have the largest impact on the TFR. We first estimate the elasticity of TFR, which measures the percentage change of TFR given 1% in these group-specific …

The Association Between Hiv Status And Homelessness Among Veterans In Care, Torjo Ghose, Adam J. Gordon, Stephen Metraux, Kristin M. Mattocks, Joseph J. Goulet, Maria C. Rodriguez-Barradas, Nancy L. Day, Oni Blackstock, Amy C. Justice Dec 2014

The Association Between Hiv Status And Homelessness Among Veterans In Care, Torjo Ghose, Adam J. Gordon, Stephen Metraux, Kristin M. Mattocks, Joseph J. Goulet, Maria C. Rodriguez-Barradas, Nancy L. Day, Oni Blackstock, Amy C. Justice

Kristin M. Mattocks

Veterans seeking care in the Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care System (VA) tend to be older, poorer, and less educated and present with more acute physical illnesses, mental illness, and substance use compared to both nonveterans as well as veterans not in treatment (Kazis et al., 1998; Randall, Kilpatrick, Pendergast, Jones, & Vogel, 1987). Given that these are risk factors for homelessness, and that homelessness has been found to be associated with HIV infection in the general population (Aidala & Sumartojo, 2007), it follows that homelessness and HIV infection are salient issues for veterans in VA care. Compared to …

Parenting Stress And Child Behavior Problems Within Families Of Children With Developmental Disabilities: Transactional Relations Across 15 Years, Ashley C. Woodman, Helena P. Mawdsley, Penny Hauser-Cramc Dec 2014

Parenting Stress And Child Behavior Problems Within Families Of Children With Developmental Disabilities: Transactional Relations Across 15 Years, Ashley C. Woodman, Helena P. Mawdsley, Penny Hauser-Cramc

Ashley C. Woodman

Parents of children with developmental disabilities (DD) are at increased risk of experiencing psychological stress compared to other parents. Children's high levels of internalizing and externalizing problems have been found to contribute to this elevated level of stress. Few studies have considered the reverse direction of effects, however, in families where a child has a DD. The present study investigated transactional relations between child behavior problems and maternal stress within 176 families raising a child with early diagnosed DD. There was evidence of both child-driven and parent-driven effects over the 15-year study period, spanning from early childhood (age 3) to …

Changing Cities, Changing Roles: Municipal Developments And The Urban Social Contract In Nineteenth Century Vienna, J. Alexander Killion Dec 2014

Changing Cities, Changing Roles: Municipal Developments And The Urban Social Contract In Nineteenth Century Vienna, J. Alexander Killion

J. Alexander Killion

Humans have congregated in urban areas for millennia, but the way in which people have viewed the cities they live in has varied greatly over time. The nineteenth century brought extremely rapid changes in the interactions between people and space, especially in urban areas such as the Austrian capital of Vienna. The experience of Viennese inhabitants during this period is typical of what historian Reinhart Koselleck described as a “denaturalization of historical temporalities,” in which “the relations of time and space have been transformed, at first quite slowly, but in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, quite decisively.” This rapid transformation …

Do Prosecutors Use Interview Instructions Of Build Rapport With Child Witnesses?, Elizabeth C. Ahern, Stacia N. Stolzenberg, Thomas D. Lyon Dec 2014

Do Prosecutors Use Interview Instructions Of Build Rapport With Child Witnesses?, Elizabeth C. Ahern, Stacia N. Stolzenberg, Thomas D. Lyon

Thomas D. Lyon

This study examined the quality of interview instructions and rapport-building provided by prosecutors to 168 children aged 5–12 years testifying in child sexual abuse cases, preceding explicit questions about abuse allegations. Prosecutors failed to effectively administer key interview instructions, build rapport, or rely on open-ended narrative producing prompts during this early stage of questioning. Moreover, prosecutors often directed children's attention to the defendant early in the testimony. The productivity of different types of wh- questions varied, with what/how questions focusing on actions being particularly productive. The lack of instructions, poor quality rapport-building, and closed-ended questioning suggest that children may not …

Earthlings Seeking Justice: Integrity, Consistency, And Collaboration., Carrie P. Freeman Dec 2014

Earthlings Seeking Justice: Integrity, Consistency, And Collaboration., Carrie P. Freeman

Carrie P. Freeman

This essay situates animal advocacy as the vital bridge connecting the struggle to protect the rights of human beings with the struggle to protect all living beings. Freeman theorizes why animal advocacy is marginalized among social movements, and explains why the movement should be considered central to a sustainable society that maintains justice for all sentient beings. Focusing on common ground between animal advocacy, human rights, and environmental advocacy an ideological basis is proposed on which these movements can coalesce to resist the ever-increasing corporate exploitation of life. The essay ends by utilizing exploitation of farmed animals as an example …

Holistic Pregnancy: Rejecting The Theory Of The Adversarial Mother, Rona Kaufman Kitchen Dec 2014

Holistic Pregnancy: Rejecting The Theory Of The Adversarial Mother, Rona Kaufman Kitchen

Rona Kaufman Kitchen

In its zealous effort to protect the lives and health of unborn children, the law frequently views the expecting mother with suspicion. In its most extreme form, the law regards the potential mother as a potential murderess. This perspective does not reflect the nature of pregnancy, it undermines the autonomy of loving mothers, and it is detrimental to children. Regardless of whether there is any conflict between mother and fetus, the State presumes the mother to be a threat to her fetus and subjugates her rights as a result. The State interferes with the mother’s autonomy, bodily integrity, parental rights, …

Is It Me Or Her? How Gender Composition Evokes Interpersonally Sensitive Behavior On Collaborative Cross-Boundary Projects, Michele Williams, Evan Polman Dec 2014

Is It Me Or Her? How Gender Composition Evokes Interpersonally Sensitive Behavior On Collaborative Cross-Boundary Projects, Michele Williams, Evan Polman

Michele Williams

This paper investigates how professional workers’ willingness to act with interpersonal sensitivity is influenced by the gender and power of their interaction partners. We call into question the idea that mixed-gender interactions involve more interpersonal sensitivity than all-male interactions primarily because women demonstrate more interpersonal sensitivity than do men. Rather, we argue that the social category “women” can evoke more sensitive behavior from others such that men as well as women contribute to an increase in sensitivity in mixed-gender interactions. We further argue that the presence of women may trigger increased sensitivity such that men can also be the recipients …

The Sociodemographic Patterning Of Opposition To Raising Taxes On Tobacco And Restricting Tobacco Advertisements In Argentina, J Konfino, Fernando De Maio, D Ondarsuhu, L Goldberg, B Linetzky, D Ferrante

Fernando De Maio

Background: Argentina has enacted important tobacco control initiatives in recent years. Yet little is known about the social patterning of attitudes toward tobacco control. Research is needed to explore what predicts opposition to tobacco control initiatives such as higher taxes on tobacco and the prohibition of tobacco advertising. Study design: Secondary analysis of Argentina's Global Adult Tobacco Survey (N ¼ 6645). Methods: Binary logistic regression analysis examining opposition to raising tobacco taxes and banning tobacco publicity. Models were stratified by smoking status. Results: Respondents generally indicated very little opposition to either tobacco control measure, with only 15.6% of respondents opposed …

Families, Funerals And Facebook: Reimag(In)Ing And Curating Toraja Kin In Translocal Times, Kathleen M. Adams

Kathleen M. Adams

The Sa’dan Toraja of upland Sulawesi, Indonesia have long been celebrated in the anthropological literature for their elaborate procession-filled mortuary rituals, which draw vast networks of kith and kin to mourn, memorialise, and reaffirm familial bonds and obligations. Whether residing in the homeland or abroad, most Torajans underscore funeral rites as the most vital expression of Toraja familial and cultural identity. Although some estimates suggest that more Torajans now reside off-island and overseas than remain in the homeland, extended familial funerals in the homeland continue to have a centripetal physical, economic and emotional pull. While various scholars have documented the …

Sex-Stratified And Age-Adjusted Social Gradients In Tobacco In Argentina And Uruguay: Evidence From The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (Gats), Fernando De Maio, Jonatan Konfino, Dolores Ondarsuhu, Lucila Goldbert, Bruno Linetzky, Daniel Ferrante

Fernando De Maio

Objective To examine social gradients in tobacco use in Argentina and Uruguay, using newly available directly comparable data sets. Methods Secondary analysis of Global Adult Tobacco Survey data from Argentina (N=6645) and Uruguay (N=5581). Social gradients in current tobacco use, exposure to secondhand smoke, and cessation attempt were examined with sex-stratified and age-adjusted logistic regression. Results Among men, there is evidence of higher odds of being a current smoker among respondents with lower levels of education, but the association is only statistically significant for respondents with less than primary education in Uruguay (OR=2.15, 95% CI 1.22 to 3.77). Similarly, women …

The study reveal the correlation between noise levels and social activities developed in the area: low number of inhabitants because of the holidays time in August and the resumption of the educational activity in autumn, including school start in September and of the university activity in October. After direct observations, the measurements were made with digital sound –level meter …

Wake Up Or Perish: Neo-Liberalism, The Social Sciences, And Salvaging The Public University, Dariusz Jemielniak Dec 2014

Wake Up Or Perish: Neo-Liberalism, The Social Sciences, And Salvaging The Public University, Dariusz Jemielniak

Dariusz Jemielniak

Higher education around the world is currently undergoing a neo-liberal administrative takeover. The drive to reduce costs and increased bureaucratization do not serve any other purpose than increasing the power of the universities’ administration. The reasons for allowing this situation to happen are related to scholars’ inertia and subscribing to a belief that academia can and should be impractical. As a result, the emerging corporate university, McDonaldized model relies increasingly on contingent and deskilled faculty, effectively eliminating the traditional academic freedoms. We conclude with suggestions for possible courses of action to make a constructive counter-movement to the radical changes taking …

Easing The Heavy Hand: Humanitarian Concern, Empathy, And Opinion On Immigration, Benjamin J. Newman, Todd K. Hartman, Patrick L. Lown, Stanley Feldman Dec 2014

Easing The Heavy Hand: Humanitarian Concern, Empathy, And Opinion On Immigration, Benjamin J. Newman, Todd K. Hartman, Patrick L. Lown, Stanley Feldman

Todd K. Hartman

The bulk of the opinion research on immigration identifies the factors leading to opposition to immigration among the American public. In contrast, we identify a key factor and condition under which citizens embrace more permissive and supportive positions on immigration. Past research indicates that humanitarianism is a core value orientation promoting support—albeit limited—for social welfare policy. Extending this research into another highly salient policy domain—immigration—we find that humanitarian concern serves as a significant source of support for permissive positions on government immigration policy. Relying upon secondary analysis of national survey data and an original survey experiment, we demonstrate that humanitarian …

Philip J. Nyhus

Human-caused biodiversity loss is a global problem, large carnivores are particularly threatened, and the tiger (Panthera tigris) is among the world’s most endangered large carnivores. The South China tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis) is the most critically endangered tiger subspecies and is considered functionally extinct in the wild. The government of China has expressed its intent to reintroduce a small population of South China tigers into a portion of their historic range as part of a larger goal to recover wild tiger populations in China. This would be the world’s first major tiger reintroduction program. A free-ranging population of 15–20 tigers …
