Facebook Frets: The Role Of Social Media Use In Predicting Social And Facebook-Specific Anxiety, Lee Farquhar, Theresa Davidson Dec 2014

Facebook Frets: The Role Of Social Media Use In Predicting Social And Facebook-Specific Anxiety, Lee Farquhar, Theresa Davidson

Lee Farquhar

Theory suggests that Facebook users may experience anxiety due to accessibility of their self-presentations to their entire networks. This project examines the impact of Facebook use on general social anxiety and Facebook-specific anxiety. Predictors we consider include the intensity of Facebook use, role conflict experienced during Facebook use, self-monitoring activities of the user, and religiosity of the user. Findings indicate that Facebook may, indeed, be increasing anxiety. Role conflict and religiosity can also increase Facebook-specific anxiety. Self-monitoring decreases Facebook-specific anxiety but increases general social anxiety. These findings suggest that, under certain circumstances, Facebook use may lead to heightened anxiety.

Tolerance On Facebook: Exploring Network Diversity And Social Distance, Lee Farquhar, Theresa Davidson Dec 2014

Tolerance On Facebook: Exploring Network Diversity And Social Distance, Lee Farquhar, Theresa Davidson

Lee Farquhar

This study examines Facebook usage, network composition, and desired social distance from groups often perceived as the “other”. Specifically, we examine attitudes toward Atheists, Muslims, and Gays. Findings indicate that social network composition (ie - network diversity, number of unique groups, number of Facebook friends) plays a significant role in participants’ desired social distance from said groups. Generally, these findings suggest that increasing diversity in a Facebook network may lead to a decrease in prejudice.

Johanna K.P. Greeson, PhD, MSS, MLSP

This exploratory study is the first to investigate the attitudes and beliefs of older adolescents in foster care toward the implementation of a child welfare-based natural mentoring intervention designed to promote enduring, growth-fostering relationships between youth at risk of emancipation and caring, supportive nonparental adults from within the youth's existing social network. Six focus groups were conducted with 17 older youth in foster care attending a specialized charter high school for young people in out-of-home care in a large, urban city in the Northeast United States. Focus group data were transcribed and analyzed using a conventional content analysis approach. The …

The Social Scholar: Re-Interpreting Scholarship In The Shifting University, Christine Greenhow, Ben Gleason

Benjamin Gleason

Purpose: This paper aims to provide a re-envisioning of traditional conceptualizations of scholarship informed by knowledge assets theory, trends shaping the modern university and technological advancements. We introduce social scholarship, a set of scholarly practices being envisioned within the conventional four domains of scholarship (i.e. discovery, integration, teaching and application). This paper provides concrete examples of the benefits and challenges of enacting social scholarly practices in light of Boisot’s theory of information flows, proprietary knowledge and the social learning cycle.
Design/methodology/approach: This article is a cross-disciplinary conceptual exploration.
Findings: In the model of social scholarship, access to knowledge is spreading …

Nimh Research Domain Criteria (Rdoc), Charles A. Sanislow, Kevin J. Quinn, Isaiah Sypher

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.

The Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) project is a framework for studying domains of biological and behavioral function that cut across traditional psychiatric diagnostic boundaries with the long-term objective of creating a new nosology based on specific biobehavioral measures. The initial aim is to provide a framework to drive clinical research. One goal of RDoC is to facilitate the development of biomarkers that could eventually be used for practical clinical diagnostic purposes and allow the development of new treatments targeting specific mechanisms of mental illness. In this entry, RDoC, its development, and the ways that it may evolve are described.

Working Paper, Kyle S. Herman Dec 2014

Working Paper, Kyle S. Herman

Dr. Kyle S. Herman

In this paper I trace the development of global environmental politics (GEP) over the past two decades within the context of the UNFCCC process from Rio 1992 until about Rio 2012. The UNFCCC process is by no means representative of the entire GEP field, but it does offer glimpses into the political processes embedded in global environmental policy-making and implementation. The GEP processes are embodied within a larger economic frame, mainly because the neoliberal thinking over the past several decades has dictated this, but for other reasons discussed in more detail below.

The Use Of Social Media In Countrywide Disaster Risk Reduction Public Awareness Strategies, Neil Dufty

Neil Dufty

Social media has been used extensively in recent disasters by emergency managers particularly to warn people and help in the co-ordination of response and recovery. However, its use in disaster prevention and preparedness is less understood. This article examines the use of social media in disaster risk reduction (DRR) awareness strategies around the world through a literature review and expert opinion. It concludes that it is generally underutilised in major DRR awareness strategies, although there are robust programs operating in some countries with high social media use.

Stories And Statistics From Library-Led Publishing, Casey Busher, Irene Kamotsky Dec 2014

Stories And Statistics From Library-Led Publishing, Casey Busher, Irene Kamotsky

Irene Kamotsky

Library-led publishing is one of the new approaches to journal publishing and open access that has grown tremendously in the last few years. A 2010 MLIS-funded survey found that 55% of respondents—from U.S. academic libraries of all different types and sizes—were already implementing or developing a publishing program. Library-led publishing has garnered such momentum because, by offering low- or no-cost publishing to university scholars, it addresses needs that traditional publishing has not been able to meet. This article presents a series of small case studies to illustrate different journals that have benefited from the library-publishing model: a journal that struggled …

Navigating Uncertainty: The Survival Strategies Of Religious Ngos In China, Jonathan Tam, Reza Hasmath Dec 2014

Navigating Uncertainty: The Survival Strategies Of Religious Ngos In China, Jonathan Tam, Reza Hasmath

Reza Hasmath

This article looks at the strategies religious non-governmental organizations (RNGOs) with strong transnational linkages use to maintain a continued presence in mainland China. It does so by utilizing neo-institutional theory as an instrument for analysis, with an emphasis on outlining the coercive, mimetic, and normative pressures RNGOs face. One of the key findings of the study is that there is creative circumvention of isomorphic pressures by working with local agents, fostering trust with the local government, and keeping a low profile. Moreover, RNGOs dealt with the uncertain institutional environment in China through staff exchanges, denominational supervision, tapping into global platforms, …

The Contemporary Ethnic Minority In China: An Introduction, Margaret Maurer-Fazio, Reza Hasmath Dec 2014

The Contemporary Ethnic Minority In China: An Introduction, Margaret Maurer-Fazio, Reza Hasmath

Reza Hasmath

This article introduces the historical context behind the practice of fixed ethnic identification currently employed in the People’s Republic of China. Notwithstanding the major problems to clearly delineate the boundaries of many ethnic groups in the Chinese context, the article contends there was a strong pragmatism for officially classifying ethnic minority groups rather than adopting the self-identification method used in many Western nations. Finally, the article poses the query whether ethnic minority status continues to hold a meaningful category of analysis in contemporary China.

Job Acquisition, Retention, And Outcomes For Ethnic Minorities In Urban China, Reza Hasmath, Benjamin Ho Dec 2014

Job Acquisition, Retention, And Outcomes For Ethnic Minorities In Urban China, Reza Hasmath, Benjamin Ho

Reza Hasmath

This article estimates wage differentials between ethnic minorities and the Han majority in China. While Han-minority wage differentials estimated with regression analysis demonstrate little evidence for ethnic minority disadvantages, evidence looking at the process of ethnic minority job acquisition and retention suggests that minorities perceive they are at a disadvantage in the job search process. The article assesses potential factors for perceived disadvantages in China’s labor market such as discrimination, social network capital, and working culture.

Desarrollo Humano, Economía Y Democracia En Guanajuato, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte (Coordinador)

Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Streetscape Features Related To Pedestrian Activity, Reid Ewing, Amir Hajrasouliha, Kathryn M. Neckerman, Marnie Purciel-Hill, William Greene

Amir Hajrasouliha

By measuring twenty streetscape features and numerous other variables for 588 blocks in New York City, we were able to identify variables that explain pedestrian traffic volumes. We found significant positive correlations between three out of twenty streetscape features with pedestrian counts after controlling for density and other built environmental variables. The significant streetscape features are the proportion of windows on the street, the proportion of active street frontage, and the number of pieces of street furniture. This study provides guidance for streetscape projects that aim to create walkable streets and pedestrian-friendly environments.

"Dual Agent Distortions In Real Estate Transactions", Ken Johnson, Zhenguo Lin, Jia Xie Dec 2014

"Dual Agent Distortions In Real Estate Transactions", Ken Johnson, Zhenguo Lin, Jia Xie

Jia Xie

This paper investigates price distortions in dual agent real estate transactions. Consistent with the literature, we find that dual agent has a null effect on sale price. However, dual agent distortions on sale price emerge after controlling for the ownership of the property. We find that dual agent is associated with a 7.19 percent price premium on agent owned properties, but a 13.06 percent price discount on government owned properties and a 7.04 percent discount on bank owned properties. In addition, market conditions also play an important role in such price distortions.

How We Teach Core News Values In The Digital Age, Debbie Owens Dec 2014

How We Teach Core News Values In The Digital Age, Debbie Owens

Debbie Owens

The author addresses the issue of whether the fundamental journalistic elements: timeliness, proximity,
prominence, consequence (impact), and human interest are still relevant. If so, how do journalism educators teach broadcast-electronic media students the core values of professional standards of news in this digital age? While all the traditional core tenets continue to have varying degrees of relevance in the broadcast news industry, the impact of digital (social) media on the news environment has generated unique levels of engagement both between consumers and media entities and among consumers themselves. However, by no means does this phenomenon suggest that news values are …

Reconstructing Neighborhoods: Case Studies In Foreclosed Housing Acquisition And Redevelopment By Community Development Corporations, David A. Turcotte, Michael P. Johnson Jr., Emily Vidrine, Rachel B. Drew, Felicia M. Sullivan

Michael P. Johnson

Community development corporations (CDCs) play a central role in addressing the foreclosed housing crisis in America’s urban neighborhoods. The success of CDCs, however, is closely tied to market forces, neighborhood characteristics, and policies at multiple levels, as well as factors internal to CDCs. What factors support or impede the success of CDCs that operate in such complex environments? We examine the experiences of two CDCs serving two small, ethnically diverse cities in Massachusetts regarding resources, policy, practices and local markets related to neighborhood revitalization. We derive lessons about the factors internal and external to these CDCs that affect their ability …

Digital Preservation Of 3d Objects In Academic Libraries, Erich Purpur, Amber Sherman

Amber Sherman

Academic libraries are embracing the Maker Movement and 3D printing is the showpiece of the new types of resources libraries are providing as the landscape of scholarly and intellectual property changes. Libraries continue to provision access to emerging and expensive technologies; except now students and faculty on campus need different tools. Alongside traditional library resources like books and online databases, libraries are investing in equipment like 3D printers, 3D scanners, laser cutters, and other related technologies. As users design and print 3D objects, these new forms of intellectual property need to be preserved. An environmental scan of work related to …
