Amber Sherman

Many libraries are investing in 3D printers and are sharing their creations on 3rd party websites. While sites like Thingiverse, Sketchfab, and Tinkercad provide an easy forum for sharing 3D printing files, institutional repositories of academic libraries are also well positioned to disseminate this work. This Snapshot Session will demonstrate how Albertsons Library at Boise State University uses the Digital Commons institutional repository platform to showcase the 3D printing designs of faculty, staff, and students with a 3D printing collection.

Older Adults’ Explanatory Models Of Colds And Flu, Margo Hurwicz, Margaret Rose Dec 2014

Older Adults’ Explanatory Models Of Colds And Flu, Margo Hurwicz, Margaret Rose

Margo-Lea Hurwicz

Systematic data collection and analysis techniques were used in Los Angeles to discover older adults’ shared explanatory models (EM) of the causes, prevention, symptoms, treatment and consequences of late life illnesses, including influenza and the common cold. Recorded narratives also were analyzed to illustrate similarities and differences in shared cultural knowledge of these illnesses. Consensus analyses results suggest that shared EM of influenza and the common cold are similar. Participants identified both illnesses as contagious, caused or exacerbated by bad weather, but not the result of lifestyle, aging or heredity. Other shared cultural knowledge includes that both illnesses can be …

Igniting The Conversation: Embracing Legal Literacy As The Heart Of The Profession, Laura J. Ax-Fultz Dec 2014

Igniting The Conversation: Embracing Legal Literacy As The Heart Of The Profession, Laura J. Ax-Fultz

Laura J. Ax-Fultz

Law librarians are experts in instruction, databases, scholarship, and more. This broad expertise has exacerbated an identity crisis in the profession. The author argues that law librarians must develop a core identity, such as legal literacy, to navigate an ever-changing legal landscape that questions the future necessity of law librarians.

It's All In The Mail: The Economic Geography Of The German Empire, Florian Ploeckl Dec 2014

It's All In The Mail: The Economic Geography Of The German Empire, Florian Ploeckl

Florian Ploeckl

Information exchange is a necessary prerequisite for economic exchange over space. This relationship implies that information exchange data corresponds to the location of economic activity and therefore also of population. Building on this relationship we use postal data to analyse the spatial structure of the population distribution in the German Empire of 1871. In particular we utilize local volume data of a number of postal information transmission services and a New Economic Geography model to create two index measures, Information Intensity and Amenity. These variables respectively influence the two mechanisms behind the urban population distribution, namely agglomeration forces and location …

Free Economy! On 3628800 Alternatives Of And To Capitalism, Steffen Roth Dec 2014

Free Economy! On 3628800 Alternatives Of And To Capitalism, Steffen Roth

Prof. Dr. Dr. Steffen Roth

Even the sharpest problem focus cannot help but sharpen the problem. Thus, the key to our understanding of alternatives to capitalism and alternative forms of capitalism is not in the ongoing problematization of the dominance of the economic principle. Rather, the question addressed in the present form theoretical argument is about which distinctions we need to draw in order to be able to observe capitalism. Answering this question, we show that the form capitalism can only be unfolded in the medium of functional differentiation. In resituating the economy as only one out of ten function systems, we demonstrate that both …

Innovation And Degrowth, Steffen Roth, Miguel Perez-Valls, Jari Kaivo-Oja Dec 2014

Innovation And Degrowth, Steffen Roth, Miguel Perez-Valls, Jari Kaivo-Oja

Prof. Dr. Dr. Steffen Roth

Innovation is essential for economic growth. The dominant view therefore is that innovation and human development are inseparable. However, ecological economists have argued that an insatiable appetite for the creative destruction leads to the self-destruction of humankind. The key component of the growth engine (Jackson, 2011), innovation, constantly renovates the iron cage of consumerism that eventually consumes the planet to excess (Urry, 2010), while popular attempts to link innovation and sustainability constantly fail to green the economy as they do not challenge the overall functionality of the growth engine (Schneider et al., 2010; van Griethuysen, 2010). Innovation is therefore considered …

Deification Of Market; Homogenization Of Cultures: 'Free Trade' And Other Euphemisms For Global Capitalism, Gwendolyn Yvonne Alexis Dec 2014

Deification Of Market; Homogenization Of Cultures: 'Free Trade' And Other Euphemisms For Global Capitalism, Gwendolyn Yvonne Alexis

Gwendolyn Yvonne Alexis

In this book chapter, I argue that states and MNCs enter into extraterritorial pacts with global institutions like the WTO, UN, and IMF to derive economic benefit from international trade. Given that both entities are drawn to international trade by the quest for financial gain, there is no justification for attributing to either corporations or their countries of national origin malevolent intent such as colonization of the world under the banner of a particular culture. Economic actors direct their deliberate and intentional activities towards achieving economic goals; and this is done to such an extent that they are often willing …

Toward More General Hedonic Estimation: Clarifying The Roles Of Alternative Experimental Designs With An Application To A Housing Attribute, Michael D. Eriksen, Thomas Kniesner, Christopher Rohlfs, Ryan Sullivan Dec 2014

Toward More General Hedonic Estimation: Clarifying The Roles Of Alternative Experimental Designs With An Application To A Housing Attribute, Michael D. Eriksen, Thomas Kniesner, Christopher Rohlfs, Ryan Sullivan

Michael D Eriksen

Our research develops a more general hedonic model in which an exogenous shock to a single product attribute can affect other attributes, the markets for the product’s complements and substitutes, and aggregate quantity produced. The factors are shown to be empirically relevant and to cause bias in traditional approaches. Experimental estimators of attribute demand are introduced that address biases, are transparent, and are straightforward to implement. We apply one of the estimators developed to measure the marginal value placed by householders on subsidized carbon monoxide detectors.

Intertextuality In Discourse, Adam Hodges Dec 2014

Intertextuality In Discourse, Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

This chapter examines the concept of intertextuality as it is used in the analysis of discourse. The exploration begins with a review of the philosophical foundations and terminology associated with the concept, and then discusses several dimensions of intertextuality that have been taken up in the work of discourse analysts, including (re)contextualization, genre, the intertextual gap, parody, reported speech/constructed dialogue, and intertextuality, discourse and power.

Ideologies Of Language And Race In Us Media Discourse About The Trayvon Martin Shooting, Adam Hodges Dec 2014

Ideologies Of Language And Race In Us Media Discourse About The Trayvon Martin Shooting, Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

This article examines the discourse about race and racism that ensued in the US media after the shooting death of an African American youth, Trayvon Martin, by a neighborhood watch volunteer, George Zimmerman, in February 2012. The analysis examines news programs from the three major cable television channels in the United States: CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC. The theoretical framework builds upon Hill’s (2008) discussion of the ‘folk theory of race and racism’ in contrast to critical race theory, and asks, to what extent does the mainstream media’s discourse about race remain embedded in folk ideas and to what extent …

The Paranoid Style In Politics: Ideological Underpinnings Of The Discourse Of Second Amendment Absolutism, Adam Hodges Dec 2014

The Paranoid Style In Politics: Ideological Underpinnings Of The Discourse Of Second Amendment Absolutism, Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

In American politics, the National Rifle Association (NRA) has asserted itself as a leading voice in the gun rights movement. The strident rhetoric emanating from the NRA leadership impacts the development of a broader discourse in American public life over gun rights — a discourse of Second Amendment absolutism — that articulates a set of assumptions and explanations in defense of an absolutist stance against gun regulation in any form. This paper examines the ideologies that underlie this absolutist discourse and the identities those ideologies help to construct. In particular, the absolutist discourse is analyzed through the lens of what …

Sociocultural Linguistics, Adam Hodges Dec 2014

Sociocultural Linguistics, Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

Sociocultural linguistics refers to a wide-ranging field of interdisciplinary scholarship concerned with language as a sociocultural phenomenon. Perspectives draw from sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, socially oriented forms of discourse analysis, and related disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, such as folklore studies, literary studies, social theory, social psychology, and the philosophy of language. This entry traces the historical development of the field, including discussion of key figures and their scholarly contributions. It then outlines key themes and ideas central to ongoing research concerns.

War Discourse, Adam Hodges Dec 2014

War Discourse, Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

War discourse refers to the use of language and social interaction as a mediating element in the outbreak, conduct, and disputation of armed political conflict. This entry identifies and outlines key elements of war discourse, which include call to arms rhetoric, the discursive construction of social identities, and the use of legitimating devices in language to make the actions associated with war appear appropriate, reasonable, and justifiable.

Does Education Signal Ability In Ghana? An Analysis Comparing Wage Earners With The Self-Employed, Sara Gundersen Dec 2014

Does Education Signal Ability In Ghana? An Analysis Comparing Wage Earners With The Self-Employed, Sara Gundersen

Sara Gundersen

When education signals underlying abilities, income returns to education may not reflect true increases in productivity.  This may be a particular concern in developing countries, where education is often prescribed as a major path to escaping poverty. Unfortunately, because education signaling occurs when underlying worker characteristics are difficult to observe, obtaining estimates of education signaling is extremely difficult. This paper uses Spence’s 2002 model of signaling to develop a testable hypothesis: in the presence of education signaling, wage earners will see a higher return to education than the self-employed doing similar work. Using the 2005-2006 round of the Ghana Living …

Curriculum Mapping As A Strategic Planning Tool (Post-Print Proof), Susan [Gardner] Archambault, Jennifer Masunaga Dec 2014

Curriculum Mapping As A Strategic Planning Tool (Post-Print Proof), Susan [Gardner] Archambault, Jennifer Masunaga

Jennifer Masunaga

Curriculum mapping is a procedure for documenting and visualizing student learning at the programmatic level. The process allows libraries the opportunity to record where information literacy skills are taught across the curriculum in order to locate gaps and redundancies within a library instruction program. It also allows for alignment of the library’s learning outcomes with the learning outcomes important to the institution. This paper presents a review of the history of curriculum mapping, followed by a case study of how Loyola Marymount University (LMU) used the process to support information literacy in a new core curriculum.

Creative Achievement And Intelligence In Student Entrepreneurs, Todd A. Finkle, Mark Shrader Dec 2014

Creative Achievement And Intelligence In Student Entrepreneurs, Todd A. Finkle, Mark Shrader

Todd A Finkle

This study fills a gap in the entrepreneurship literature by investigating creative achievement and intelligence within students who have been entrepreneurs. The study looks at differences in the levels of creative achievement and intelligence between students who have been entrepreneurs versus those who have not been entrepreneurs. The study used the Creative Achievement Quotient (CAQ) (Carson, Peterson, & Higgins, 2005) and college entrance exam scores and grades as measures of intelligence. There were several significant findings. First, students who had been entrepreneurs had significantly lower college entrance exam scores. Secondly, students that had been entrepreneurs had significantly higher CAQs. Finally, …

Will Open Access Get Me Cited? An Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Open Access Publishing In Political Science, Amy Atchison, Jonathan Bull Dec 2014

Will Open Access Get Me Cited? An Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Open Access Publishing In Political Science, Amy Atchison, Jonathan Bull

Jonathan Bull

The digital revolution has made it easier for Political Scientists to share and access high-quality research online. However, many of these articles are stored in proprietary databases that some institutions cannot afford. High-quality, peer reviewed, top-tier journal articles that have been made open access (freely available online) should theoretically be more easily accessed and cited than articles of similar quality that are only available to paying customers. Research into the efficacy of Open Access (OA) publishing has thus far focused mainly on the natural sciences, and the results have been mixed. Because OA has not been as widely adopted in …

Patching Holes And Integrating Community: A Strengths-Based Continuum Of Care For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender And Questioning Youth, Shelley L. Craig Phd, Michael P. Dentato Phd, Msw, Genevieve E. Iacovino

Michael P. Dentato

This article describes an integrated model of service provision called a continuum of care (CoC), and illustrates the application of this approach to working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth through a case example. The CoC described in this article includes provision of individual and group counseling, case management, housing/family supports, socialization events, and prevention workshops, along with relevant outcomes. The relevance of a CoC model for LGBTQ youth due to the inclusion of community context and potential to empower service users is explored. Key recommendations for CoC models with LGBTQ youth include a focus on collaboration, …

This online North American study of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) social work students (n=1,018) in bachelor of social work (BSW; 24%) or master’s of social work (MSW; 76%) programs explored educational experiences in 126 programs in 44 U. S. states and 7 Canadian provinces. Forty-four percent of students reported limited inclusion of LGBTQ content in classes, yet 64% indicated some degree of support for their LGBTQ identities in their programs. One-third reported homophobic experiences in programs, yet many (63%) were aware of “out” LGBTQ faculty. Overall, students reported fairly low levels of self-assessed practice readiness with specific …

Valuing Ecosystem Services In Coastal Management Policy: Looking Beyond The Here And Now, Chad J. Mcguire Dec 2014

Valuing Ecosystem Services In Coastal Management Policy: Looking Beyond The Here And Now, Chad J. Mcguire

Chad J McGuire

This article explores how the identification and account- ing of ecosystem services can aid coastal management policies, particularly as management looks to a future that includes the impacts of climate change. At the core of making better deci- sions is an understanding of the value of ecosystem services. The economic context of ecosystem services is explored in order to outline what may be considered a complete account- ing of costs. Once contextualized, ecosystem services will then be applied to current coastal management issues associ- ated with sea level rise. In particular, policy-relevant questions about mitigating and adapting to sea level …

The Role Of Risk Perception In Building Sustainable Policy Instruments: A Case Study Of Public Coastal Flood Insurance In The Usa, Chad J. Mcguire Dec 2014

The Role Of Risk Perception In Building Sustainable Policy Instruments: A Case Study Of Public Coastal Flood Insurance In The Usa, Chad J. Mcguire

Chad J McGuire

Public planning for sustainability implies a forward-looking approach that often includes imagining future harm and taking steps to prevent that future harm before it occurs. A major challenge to implementing such forward looking, or precautionary, a policy instrument is managing the impacts such policies have on existing expectations. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role of risk perception in the development of forward-looking policy instruments. A case study example focused on coastal flood insurance in the USA is presented to highlight the difficulty of implementing sustainable policy goals when current policies incentivise the discounting of risk. The …

Globalization, Inequality, And Redistribution: Theory And Evidence, Giray Gozgor, Priya Ranjan Dec 2014

Globalization, Inequality, And Redistribution: Theory And Evidence, Giray Gozgor, Priya Ranjan

Priya Ranjan

This paper constructs a simple theoretical model to study the implications of globalization for inequality and redistribution. It shows that when globalization increases inequality, a policymaker interested in maximizing the sum of welfare of all agents increases redistribution. Empirically, the paper examines the effects of globalization on inequality and redistribution in a panel data set of 140 countries for the period from 1970 to 2012. We find that both inequality and redistribution have been increasing with globalization. The results are robust to the inclusion of many different controls and the exclusion of outliers.
