Improved Inferences For Spatial Regression Models, Shew Fan Liu, Zhenlin Yang
Improved Inferences For Spatial Regression Models, Shew Fan Liu, Zhenlin Yang
Research Collection School Of Economics
The quasi-maximum likelihood (QML) method is popular in the estimation and inference for spatial regression models. However, the QML estimators (QMLEs) of the spatial parameters can be quite biased and hence the standard inferences for the regression coefficients (based on t-ratios) can be seriously affected. This issue, however, has not been addressed. The QMLEs of the spatial parameters can be bias-corrected based on the general method of Yang (2015b, J. of Econometrics 186, 178-200). In this paper, we demonstrate that by simply replacing the QMLEs of the spatial parameters by their bias-corrected versions, the usual t-ratios for the regression coefficients …
Testing For Multiple Bubbles: Limit Theory Of Real-Time Detectors, Peter C. B. Phillips, Shuping Shi, Jun Yu
Testing For Multiple Bubbles: Limit Theory Of Real-Time Detectors, Peter C. B. Phillips, Shuping Shi, Jun Yu
Research Collection School Of Economics
This article provides the limit theory of real-time dating algorithms for bubble detection that were suggested in Phillips, Wu, and Yu (PWY; International Economic Review 52 [2011], 201-26) and in a companion paper by the present authors (Phillips, Shi, and Yu, 2015; PSY; International Economic Review 56 [2015a], 1099-1134. Bubbles are modeled using mildly explosive bubble episodes that are embedded within longer periods where the data evolve as a stochastic trend, thereby capturing normal market behavior as well as exuberance and collapse. Both the PWY and PSY estimates rely on recursive right-tailed unit root tests (each with a different recursive …

Testing For Multiple Bubbles: Historical Episodes Of Exuberance And Collapse In The S&P 500, Peter C. B. Phillips, Shuping Shi, Jun Yu
Research Collection School Of Economics
Recent work on econometric detection mechanisms has shown the effectiveness of recursive procedures in identifying and dating financial bubbles in real time. These procedures are useful as warning alerts in surveillance strategies conducted by central banks and fiscal regulators with real-time data. Use of these methods over long historical periods presents a more serious econometric challenge due to the complexity of the nonlinear structure and break mechanisms that are inherent in multiple-bubble phenomena within the same sample period. To meet this challenge, this article develops a new recursive flexible window method that is better suited for practical implementation with long …
Cointegration Of Matched Home Purchases And Rental Price Indexes: Evidence From Singapore, Badi H. Baltagi, Jing Li
Cointegration Of Matched Home Purchases And Rental Price Indexes: Evidence From Singapore, Badi H. Baltagi, Jing Li
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper exploits the homogeneity feature of the Singapore private residential condominium market and constructs matched home purchase price and rental price series using the repeated sales method. These matched series allow us to conduct time series analysis to examine the long-term present value relationship in the housing market. Three key findings are obtained. First, we fail to establish a cointegrating relationship between the home purchase price and rental price based on nationally estimated indexes. Second, area-specific indexes demonstrate strong cross-correlations, invalidating the use of first generation panel unit root tests that ignore these cross-correlations. Third, Pesaran's CIPS test indicates …
A Bayesian Chi-Squared Test For Hypothesis Testing, Yong Li, Xiaobin Liu, Jun Yu
A Bayesian Chi-Squared Test For Hypothesis Testing, Yong Li, Xiaobin Liu, Jun Yu
Research Collection School Of Economics
A new Bayesian test statistic is proposed to test a point null hypothesis based on a quadratic loss. The proposed test statistic may be regarded as the Bayesian version of the Lagrange multiplier test. Its asymptotic distribution is obtained based on a set of regular conditions and follows a chi-squared distribution when the null hypothesis is correct. The new statistic has several important advantages that make it appealing in practical applications. First, it is well-defined under improper prior distributions. Second, it avoids Jeffrey-Lindley's paradox. Third, it always takes a non-negative value and is relatively easy to compute, even for models …

Remittances Without Borders, Tan Swee Liang, S. N. Venkataramanan, Anil Kishora
Research Collection School Of Economics
A Pan-Asian Mobile Remittance Platform might just be the next big disruption in global remittances. One out of every 28 people lives in a country that they were not born in. As migrants, they are estimated by The World Bank to send home US$636 billion in 2017, with three-quarters remitted to developing countries. These remittances form a significant percentage of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of many of these developing countries. Given their magnitude and contribution to national economies, even a small reduction in remittance cost adds billions to these local economies. Mobile-to-mobile cross border remittances have recently shown that …
Supplement To Two Papers On Multiple Bubbles [Online Supplementary Materials], Peter C. B. Phillips, Shuping Shi, Jun Yu
Supplement To Two Papers On Multiple Bubbles [Online Supplementary Materials], Peter C. B. Phillips, Shuping Shi, Jun Yu
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper provides a supplement to two companion papers by the authors: “Testing for Multiple Bubbles: Historical Episodes of Exuberance and Collapse in the S&P 500” (PSY1 hereafter); and “Testing for Multiple Bubbles: Limit Theory of Real Time Detectors” (PSY2 hereafter). Section 1 supplements the empirical application of PSY1 by examining the robustness of the bubble identification and dating results to the choice of the minimum window size parameter used in the rolling regression framework of PSY. Section 2 provides proofs of supplementary lemmas that facilitate analysis of the multiple bubble case, derives the limit behaviour of the recursive unit …

Missing Perspectives: Servicemembers’ Transition From Service To Civilian Life, Corri Zoli, Rosalinda Maury, Daniel Fay
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
The report prioritizes an evidence-based approach through targeted surveys, interviews, and focus groups and centers the perspectives of recent servicemembers (active-duty, reserves, National Guard, veterans, and their families) in its analyses. Research findings are based on multi-method studies of servicemembers in their multiple roles: as warfighters, civilians, students, professionals, employees, and family members, among others. Research results are designed to elevate the public, academic, and policy discourse on Post- 9/11 servicemembers, to inform recommendations to improve post-service transition, and to form the foundation for a second study on best strategies for servicemembers in higher education and civilian careers.
Building Self-Efficacy In Peer Relations: Evaluation Of A School-Based Intervention, Shaun Davis
Building Self-Efficacy In Peer Relations: Evaluation Of A School-Based Intervention, Shaun Davis
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
This study employs a longitudinal, cohort-sequential design (Schaie, 1965) to evaluate the effectiveness of Kelso’s Choice (KC), a behavioral intervention program, in 3 cohorts of 3rd and 4th grade students from a rural elementary school over the course of 2 academic years. The study evaluates the impact of KC on development of social self-efficacy, as measured in 2 domains: (a) social self-efficacy, as measured by student reports from the Children’s Self- Efficacy in Peer Interactions (CSPI; Wheeler & Ladd, 1982), the Social Problem Solving Measure (SPSM; Dodge, Bates, & Pettit, 1990) and teacher reports from the Social Competence Scale (SCS; …
Emerging Market Currency Composition Of Reserves, Denomination Of Trade And Currency Movements, Robert N. Mccauley, Hiro Ito, Tracy Chan
Emerging Market Currency Composition Of Reserves, Denomination Of Trade And Currency Movements, Robert N. Mccauley, Hiro Ito, Tracy Chan
Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article analyses the relationships among the unit of account and means of exchange functions of an international currency, on the one hand, and its store of value in official use, on the other hand. Historical evidence links the currency composition of reserves to currency movements. The currency composition of reserves is strongly related in the cross-section to both currency movements and the currency denomination of trade. Data limitations make it hard to distinguish these two factors. A panel analysis of 5 countries from central and eastern Europe shows that both trade invoicing and currency movements drive changing official reserve …
Monetary Policy Spillovers And The Trilemma In The New Normal: Periphery Country Sensitivity To Core Country Conditions, Joshua Aizenman, Menzie David Chinn, Hiro Ito
Monetary Policy Spillovers And The Trilemma In The New Normal: Periphery Country Sensitivity To Core Country Conditions, Joshua Aizenman, Menzie David Chinn, Hiro Ito
Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We investigate why and how the financial conditions of developing and emerging market countries (peripheral countries) can be affected by the movements in the center economies - the U.S., Japan, the Eurozone, and China. We apply a two-step approach. First, we estimate the sensitivity of countries’ financial variables to the center economies [policy interest rate, stock market prices, and the real effective exchange rates (REER)] while controlling for global and domestic factors. Next, we examine the association of the estimated sensitivity coefficients with the macroeconomic conditions, policies, real and financial linkages with the center economies, and the level of institutional …

Basta De Sexo, Drogas Y Rock And Roll: Aspectos Formales Del Cuento De Los Posnovísimos Cubanos, Karina Elizabeth Vázquez
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications
Locating A Wildlife Corridor For The Wild Tiger In India, Carmen George
Locating A Wildlife Corridor For The Wild Tiger In India, Carmen George
Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones
The tiger (Panthera Tigris) has been on the ICUN red list of endangered species since 1972. In the early 20th century, 100,000 wild tigers roamed Asia and today approximately 3,600 remain. India is home to over half of the remaining wild tigers and continues to struggle in creating effective conservation plans. Poaching, habitat destruction and prey depletion are several primary causes of tiger population degradation and remain major barriers to rejuvenation of healthy populations in the wild. Wildlife corridors are essential to the process of repairing fragmented habitats. Through the use of GIS and remote sensing this …
Habitat Selection Of Wolverines: A Geospatial Analysis Of Wolverine Movements In Southwest Montana, Bryn Karabensh
Habitat Selection Of Wolverines: A Geospatial Analysis Of Wolverine Movements In Southwest Montana, Bryn Karabensh
Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones
Wolverine research in the contiguous United States is not abundant and understanding of the ecology of this species is not fully understood in this ecosystem. Specifically lacking in research is data regarding wolverine movements. This paucity of data and analysis inhibits the ability to effectively develop and implement conservation and management strategies. This paper seeks to identify patterns and habitat preferences of wolverines with respect to their movements. Specifically, do they avoid roads and clear-cuts zones from timber harvest and do they display a preference to topography features during movements? Using GPS locations of wolverines a regression analysis was applied. …

Improving The Network Scale-Up Estimator: Incorporating Means Of Sums, Recursive Back Estimation, And Sampling Weights, Patrick Habecker, Kirk Dombrowski, Bilal Khan
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Researchers interested in studying populations that are difficult to reach through traditional survey methods can now draw on a range of methods to access these populations. Yet many of these methods are more expensive and difficult to implement than studies using conventional sampling frames and trusted sampling methods. The network scale-up method (NSUM) provides a middle ground for researchers who wish to estimate the size of a hidden population, but lack the resources to conduct a more specialized hidden population study. Through this method it is possible to generate population estimates for a wide variety of groups that are perhaps …

Medical needs of Americans are increasing as the population is aging and struggling with obesity. The addition of new medical technology and techniques, their widespread availability, and procedural improvements have created a more open market for medical providers. Costly procedures in cardiology and orthopedics serve as examples of increasingly needed medical treatments. Individuals, businesses and insurance companies have struggled to find ways to pay for these necessary procedures. Traditionally, in the U.S. the majority of medical procedures have been performed locally. Because of the rising costs associated with these procedures individuals and some healthcare providers are now looking to foreign …

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article investigates how digital technologies in the energy sector are enabling increased value extraction in the cycle of capital accumulation through surveillant proceesses of everyday energy consumption. We offer critical theory (Gramsci, Foucault) and critical political economy (Marx) as a guide for critical understanding of value creation in ICT through quotidian processes and practices of social reproduction. In this regard, the concept of the "prosumer" is extended beyond notions of voluntary participation in Web 2.0 to the political economy of energy use. Within this broad framework we investigate national and local level "smart grid" campaigns and projects. The "smartening" …

Women On Top: Diversity In Gender And Education Profiles Of Top Management And Board Of Directors Of Philippine Publicly Traded Firms, Angelo A. Unite, Ailyn A. Shi, Michael J. Sullivan
Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)
Women have been making headway when it comes to occupying corporate board and senior management positions in companies all over the world, particularly in the Philippines. Stylized facts released by international reports point to the surprising prevalence of women holding leadership positions among Philippine firms. Hence, this descriptive study bridges a gap in the Philippine corporate governance literature by using data on around 250 PSE-listed firms to examine gender diversity composition and trends among CEOs, boards, and top management teams in Philippine publicly traded firms on a five-year interval (i.e. 2003, 2008, 2013) and for the most recent year (i.e. …

Where Are The Passengers? A Grid-Based Gaussian Mixture Model For Taxi Bookings, Meng-Fen Chiang, Tuan Anh Hoang, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Taxi bookings are events where requests for taxis are made by passengers either over voice calls or mobile apps. As the demand for taxis changes with space and time, it is important to model both the space and temporal dimensions in dynamic booking data. Several applications can benefit from a good taxi booking model. These include the prediction of number of bookings at certain location and time of the day, and the detection of anomalous booking events. In this paper, we propose a Grid-based Gaussian Mixture Model (GGMM) with spatio-temporal dimensions that groups booking data into a number of spatio-temporal …

Religious Diversity And The Macedonian Model Of Secularism, Aleksandar Spasenovski
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The geographical position of the Republic of Macedonia continues to shape its religious landscape as dramatically as in the times of Byzantium or communism. Taking into account the aforementioned, this paper will encompass the legal, political and sociological aspects of the Macedonian model of secularism. In this respect, the content of the constitutional provisions suggests that Republic of Macedonia most broadly defines the right to equality, guaranteeing the same rights, independently from the religious determination of its citizens, among other things. The state also guarantees the freedom of religion, allowing its citizens to freely practice their religion either alone or …

Do You Like It On The…?: A Case-Study Of Reactions To A Facebook Campaign For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Myleea D. Hill, Marceline Hayes
The Qualitative Report
Awareness is a common goal of public health campaigns. However, awareness as an end goal may be counter-productive and may lead to slactivism instead of action. The purpose of the present research was to analyze reactions to the Facebook breast cancer “Do You Like it on the …”game via feedback to an article stating that the game is not cute/sexy/informative. Thematic analysis revealed several themes: Support or Disagreement with the author’s points, the Game is Ineffective, the Game Spreads Awareness, and Awareness is the Beginning. The researchers suggested (1) a distinction be made between awareness and attention and awareness and …

Student evaluations of faculty teaching are critical components to the evaluation of faculty performance. These evaluations are used to determine teaching effectiveness and they influence tenure and promotion decisions. Although they are designed as objective assessments of teaching performance, extraneous factors, including the instructors’ race, can affect the composition and educational atmosphere at colleges and universities. In this reflection, we briefly review some literature on the use and utility of student evaluations and present narratives from social work faculty in which students’ evaluation contained perceived racial bias.

Teaching behavior impacts student psychopathology. This study explored the associations between teaching behavior types and depressive symptoms in students. The Teaching Behavior Questionnaire (TBQ) and the Center for Epidemiological Studies – Depression Scale (CES-D) were completed by 763 middle and 976 high school students from private Catholic schools. In the middle school sample, a confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the four-factor structure of the TBQ previously found in public high schools. As predicted, a two-level hierarchical linear model (HLM) analysis with the high school sample found that only the Negative Teaching Behavior scale of the TBQ was positively related to CES-D …
