The Board - A Place For Veterans To Build Their Professional Networks, Anthony Dale Bench
The Board - A Place For Veterans To Build Their Professional Networks, Anthony Dale Bench
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
I chose to complete a service-learning project where I created a website that allows veterans to build their professional networks. I also identified that veterans often have a hard time communicating their military qualifications on their resumes. This led to the creation of a forum on my website where veterans can submit their resumes and receive feedback from other veterans.

Donate A Book Community Book Drive, Camille R. Slack
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
I chose to do a community book drive so that the more underprivileged people in our community could be provided with something they may not have the option of obtaining otherwise. Reading materials! The biggest step in order for this to be a success was taking action to get the word out in the community among those that can provide the donations that would be needed. Everyone at each stage of this project worked together to make it a success. I have to admit, this project went a lot easier and smoother than I had originally thought it would.

Library Signage, Aleena Ann Gingerich
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
While working at the Eastern Florida State College Library and interacting with patrons I have gained insight for the areas which can be altered to improve our patrons’ experiences. I decided to apply the skills I’ve gained through my higher education experience to step outside of my current role at the Eastern Florida State College library, to improve the library’s signage.
The goal is to make the library more accessible and easier for patrons to use, promoting more book loans and encourage students to use library services.
The Impact Of Tic Suppression On Speaking Ability, Nicolas Brooklyn Merl
The Impact Of Tic Suppression On Speaking Ability, Nicolas Brooklyn Merl
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Tics are rapid, recurrent, sudden movements or vocalizations. Recent research has found that (a) children can suppress tics for short durations if this suppression is reinforced, (b) suppression can lead to stress, and (c) the suppression of tics can lead to simultaneous activities being disrupted. The present study attempts to replicate and extend prior findings. An attempt was made to replicate the finding that tics can be suppressed using a DRO procedure and that suppression leads to stress. The experiment then investigated whether the suppression of tics led to a reduction in the ability to speak. Four conditions were compared: …

Participatory Mapping Of Tree Equity, Preferences, And Environmental Justice In Portland, Oregon, Kate Gregory, Idowu Ajibade
Participatory Mapping Of Tree Equity, Preferences, And Environmental Justice In Portland, Oregon, Kate Gregory, Idowu Ajibade
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this study, we examine community lived experiences, preferences, and narratives about tree equity in Portland, Oregon. Using an environmental justice framework combined with participatory mapping, focus group discussions, and semi-structured interviews, we examine values, perceptions of canopy cover, and everyday relationships with trees across different racial and socio-economic backgrounds. Results show that participants from neighborhoods with histories of investment and privilege had different lived experiences compared to those with histories of disinvestment and marginalization. While participants overall valued trees, concerns about tree-related risk and safety varied in ways that reflected racial and class identities. Furthermore, memories and historic knowledge …

Never Solved, Only Outgrown: The Most Important Problem(S) Facing Utah, Thomas C. Terry
Utah People and Environment Poll (UPEP)
Nearly 90 percent of Utahans surveyed identified the most important problem (MIP) facing the state as either the environment (50%) or population growth and development (40%) in the inaugural Utah People and Environment Poll (UPEP) conducted in March-May 2023 (see Figure 1). Eleven percent of Utahns identified air quality issues – including pollution and its negative impacts – as the single largest component within the MIP environment and climate change category. According to the results of the poll, water and air pollution, affordable housing, pressure on the environment and threats to habitat boil down to “too many . . . …

Filipino Citizen Planners In Stockton & San Francisco, California: Little Manila Rising (Lmr) & South Of Market Community Action Network (Somcan), Natalie Pauline Delos Santos
City and Regional Planning
Citizen planners are direct representatives of their communities, “often working without formal position, a title, or support from the state” (Beard, 2012, p. 708). The purpose of this project is to enrich the existing literature of planning history, by including stories of citizen planners. And acknowledging them as key actors in building equitable communities. This project asserts the importance of local knowledge and citizen empowerment when it comes to successfully developing community.
This project follows the story of two Filipino citizen planner organizations. One is in Stockton, named Little Manila Rising (LMR) which is located in South Downtown Stockton. The …

Particulate matter (PM) pollution poses significant health risks, influenced by various meteorological factors and seasonal variations. This study investigates the impact of temperature and other meteorological variables on PM10 and PM2.5 levels in Fresno County, known for high air pollution. Multiple linear regression (MLR) and generalized additive models (GAMs) assess the significance of these relationships. Analyzing data from Fresno County, we examine PM10 and PM2.5 levels across "hot" (June to August) and "cool" (September to May) seasons. Findings indicate PM10, both MLR and GAM models identify statistically significant variables, excluding temperature and wind direction in each season. However, during the …

Building Partnerships Through Third-Party Facilitation: Best Practices From The Community Collaborative Initiative, Shariq Siddiqui, Abdul Samad, Rafeel Wasif
Public Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations
Small minority group organisations rarely collaborate with other nonprofits owing to a lack of expertise and resources. Third-party facilitators can help these groups navigate the process of collaboration. However, the literature has largely ignored their role in the process. We address this gap by studying the challenges third-party facilitators face in the collaboration process and best practices they can apply using the Community Collaboration Initiative (CCI), a unique third-party-facilitated collaboration process working with Muslim American nonprofits.

A Comprehensive Study Of Library-Led Textbook Affordability Initiatives In The United States, Mitchell Scott, Rachel E. Scott
Library Faculty and Staff Publications
This study presents findings from a survey and interviews investigating library-led textbook affordability initiatives in the United States. The results document diverse considerations and divergences in workflows, challenges librarians face in establishing and maintaining textbook affordability programs, and the intersection of these initiatives with library and institutional strategies. Findings suggest that these programs have grown in number and scale over the past few years, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, and are sustained—even without permanent, designated funding—due to consistently positive perceptions about their impact on student success, just-in-time delivery, and alignment with library and institutional goals.
Examining Dietary Disparities And Associated Factors Among Young Children Across Diverse Racial, Ethnic And Immigrant Households In Nebraska, Naveta Bhatti
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Early childhood is a crucial stage for developing eating behaviors which in turn plays a major role in determining health outcomes. Assessing children’s diet plays a crucial role in tackling the obesity epidemic. One of the ways to assess children’s dietary intake is by evaluating their dietary quality. Dietary quality refers to the overall healthfulness and nutritional value of an individual's diet, considering the combination of foods consumed over time. Research has consistently demonstrated that a high-quality diet is associated with a reduced risk of several health issues, such as all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease incidence or mortality, cancer incidence or …

Making Resources Available - A Capstone Project, Colleen Seay
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
This project began as an attempt to make connections within my community. Connections between people in need, and the resources and services available to them. Making these connections involved research, discovering all of the wonderful organizations available locally and statewide and compiling those into an organized list with contact information. From there, I built a website that was easy to navigate and provided anyone who wanted access, every resource I had found. This website assists not only those who are looking for a little extra help, but also those who are trying to do good within their community. Those who …

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
The Maintenance Support Initiative, my capstone project, was designed to address inefficiencies in maintaining sensitive medical equipment, where precision and reliability are crucial. Inspired by the potential to enhance quality and safety, I developed user-friendly checklists specifically tailored to our organization. By collaborating closely with stakeholders, I gathered diverse perspectives to ensure the checklists were practical and effective. Emotional intelligence and innovative thinking proved to be essential along the way. These skills helped me navigate challenges and foster a collaborative environment where everybody got to be involved in the project. The post-implementation surveys revealed the project's success, showing reduced maintenance …

I wanted to create another option for students who do not wish to go to college after high school for whatever reason they have. I was in the staffing industry for three years and know there are opportunities for kids. Students have free periods during the day which they do not use effectively. I recommended using those hours to have kids go work at manufacturing plants and pick up useful trades. It evolved to something greater and the community was great. In helping out.

My Ai Companion: An Examination Of The Removal Of Erotic Role Play From Replika Through User Discussion On Reddit, Chelsee M. Allen
Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The development of artificial intelligence (AI) software has expanded rapidly in recent years, and thus has emerged the importance of exploring human relationships with AI chatbots. Replika, an app which uses AI to mimic human conversation, removed a function called Erotic Role Play (ERP) that allowed for sexual conversation with users’ customizable chatbots in February of 2023. This exploratory qualitative study examines the aftermath of ERP’s removal through an analysis of user interactions on Reddit. Five overarching themes emerged through the analysis of top posts to a Replika-specific subreddit, encompassing topics around mental health, stigma, coping, sex work and gendered …

Role Of Partial Requirement Tariffs And Standby Charges In Microgrid Adoption In Ohio, Matthew R. Fulton, Andrew R. Thomas
Role Of Partial Requirement Tariffs And Standby Charges In Microgrid Adoption In Ohio, Matthew R. Fulton, Andrew R. Thomas
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
Utility partial load tariffs can be used to enable microgrids to be connected to distributions systems. While partial load tariffs can be avoided by connecting the microgrid directly to the transmission grid, this strategy is likely to be more effective for larger microgrids (e.g. 10 MW). But partial load tariffs – if suitably designed -- can be very useful to enabling smaller microgrid development.

Direct And Indirect Taxes In Pollution Dynamics, Vladimir Smirnyagin, Aleh Tsyvinski, Xi Wu
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Analyzing the universe of federal environmental regulations in the U.S., we construct a measure of regulations—direct taxes on pollution. Analyzing the universe of firms’ investor disclosures, we construct a measure of material environmental concerns—indirect taxes on pollution. These two empirical measures are new to the environmental regulations literature. Thirdly, we document an important new fact that the cross-sectional distribution of pollution changes is lumpy. We build a dynamic heterogeneous firm model with non-convex adjustment costs that fits the cross-sectional pollution evidence. The model explains half of the pollution decline in U.S. manufacturing over the last two decades due to direct …

Inefficiencies Of Carbon Trading Markets, Nicola Borri, Yukun Liu, Aleh Tsyvinski, Xi Wu
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The European Union Emission Trading System is a prominent market-based mechanism to reduce emissions. While the theory is well-understood, we are the first to study the whole cap-and-trade mechanism as a financial market. Analyzing the universe of transactions in 2005-2020 (more than one million records of granular transaction data), we show that this market features significant inefficiencies undermining its goals. First, about 40% of firms never trade in a given year. Second, many firms only trade during surrendering months, when compliance is immediate and prices are predictably high. Third, a number of operators engage in speculative trading, exploiting private information.

Wildlife Conservation: The Importance Of Individual Personality Traits And Sentience, Karen A. Owens, Gosia Bryja, Marc Bekoff
Animal Sentience
Individual differences in personality types within the same species have been studied much less than differences between species and populations. Personality differences are related to risk-taking and exploration, which in turn correlate with individuals' daily responses, decisions, and fitness. Bold and shy personality types can have different advantages and disadvantages under different social or environmental pressures. Analyzing personality differences has helped clarify how elk habituate to a well-populated area and how management strategies can be adapted to them. For wolves newly repatriated to Colorado, individual personality factors are likely to prove important for adapting to their new homes as well …
