It has been five years since the Affordable Care Act was signed and much attention has been focused upon website problems, delays in implementation, litigation and less than universal expansions of Medicaid in different states, as well as successes in signing people up, and increases in the numbers of people covered by health insurance, particularly young adults and those with pre-existing conditions. Increased coverage is not the only outcome desired; transformations in the delivery of health care have also been purposefully advanced including achieving better health, better care and lower cost, and implementation of incentives and penalties related to addressing …

We analyse how increases in digital piracy shapes the enforcement polices, and their resultant impact on innovation. Though the socially optimal policies always deter piracy, but they cannot prevent the fall in innovation for initial increases in piracy, beyond which, these policies induces innovation to remain at a constant level. In contrast, the government’s innovation maximizing objective results in no enforcement and tolerating piracy up to a critical level as the equilibrium, and innovation falls. Up to this level a trade-off between social welfare and innovation exists, which disappears there after, and the result coincides with the socially optimal …

Poverty Indicators And Mental Health Functioning Among Adults Living With Hiv In Delhi, India, Ezer Kang
Department of Psychology Faculty Publications
Poor mental health functioning among persons living with HIV (PLHIV) has gained considerableattention particularly in low-income countries that disproportionately carry the global HIV/AIDSburden. Fewer studies, however, have examined the relationship between poverty indicators andmental health among PHLIV in India. Based on this cross-sectional study of 196 HIV-seropositiveadults who received medical services at Shalom AIDS Project in Delhi, India, structural equationmodeling and mediation analysis were employed to estimate the associations between povertyindices (household asset index, food security, unemployment, water treatment, sanitation), HIVhealthfactors (illness in the past 3 months, co-morbid medical conditions), and psychologicaldistress. In the final model, ownership of fewer household …

The presidential election of 2012, one of the most important in American history, was the product of complex and fast-moving changes—demographic, technological, and economic—surfacing in American society. Particularly prominent in the scholarly analyses in this volume (a companion volume to Culture, Rhetoric, and Voting: The Presidential Election of 2012) are: the status of the two main political parties and their core constituencies; demographic forces and geographic trends; the strategies and tactics of the two campaigns; and the decisive impact of economic, domestic, and foreign policies.

Differential Modification Of Cortical And Thalamic Projections To Cat Primary Auditory Cortex Following Early- And Late-Onset Deafness., Nicole Chabot, Blake E Butler, Stephen G Lomber
Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications
Following sensory deprivation, primary somatosensory and visual cortices undergo crossmodal plasticity, which subserves the remaining modalities. However, controversy remains regarding the neuroplastic potential of primary auditory cortex (A1). To examine this, we identified cortical and thalamic projections to A1 in hearing cats and those with early- and late-onset deafness. Following early deafness, inputs from second auditory cortex (A2) are amplified, whereas the number originating in the dorsal zone (DZ) decreases. In addition, inputs from the dorsal medial geniculate nucleus (dMGN) increase, whereas those from the ventral division (vMGN) are reduced. In late-deaf cats, projections from the anterior auditory field (AAF) …
The Impact Of Negative Publicity On Police Self-Legitimacy, Justin Nix, Scott E. Wolfe
The Impact Of Negative Publicity On Police Self-Legitimacy, Justin Nix, Scott E. Wolfe
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
High-profile events involving police use of force in various cities throughout the US and internationally have garnered enormous media coverage and demonstrated the importance of police-community relations. To date little empirical attention has focused on how such events may negatively impact police officers. Using survey data from 567 officers, this study considers whether perceptions of negative publicity are adversely related to officers’ sense of self-legitimacy (i.e. the confidence they have in their authority). Findings revealed officers who felt less motivated as a result of negative publicity expressed less self-legitimacy. However, the degree to which officers felt their job had become …
