State Policy & Politics Database (Sppd), Jennifer Karas Montez
Center For Aging and Policy Studies
The State Policy & Politics Database (SPPD) is a compilation of annual data on state policies and politics that are particularly relevant for population health. The SPPD includes several categories of policies, including labor and economic policies (e.g., minimum wage levels, right to work laws), social safety net policies (e.g., earned income tax credits, SNAP), behavior-related policies (e.g., tobacco taxes, opioid prescribing), as well as the political ideology of the states’ government and citizens. Most measures are available annually from 1980 to 2021.
Consumer Behavior Analysis Approach To Teacher Choice Of Reading Interventions, Rochelle N. Picardo
Consumer Behavior Analysis Approach To Teacher Choice Of Reading Interventions, Rochelle N. Picardo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The use of Evidence-based Practices (EBPs) in schools is heavily emphasized in educational research and policy; however, many teachers do not use EBPs for reading instruction and intervention. Previous research on the limited use of EBPs in classrooms has primarily focused on teacher characteristics, such as their attitudes or beliefs toward these practices. As an alternative to this view, this study applied a behavioral economic approach to understanding teacher choice (i.e., EBPs over other alternatives, such as interventions with a base of limited empirical support; low-value practices [LVPs]). Hypothetical Intervention Choice Tasks were developed and used to evaluate how both …

Intersection Between Psychopathy And Aggression In Correctional Officers, Lindsay Bergeson
Intersection Between Psychopathy And Aggression In Correctional Officers, Lindsay Bergeson
Theses and Graduate Projects
Excessive use of force incidents within the last decade has resulted in high media coverage. One consequence of this high media coverage is the community more frequently questioning the personality characteristics of police and correctional officers. While the literature has begun to dive into the maladaptive traits of police officers and its relationship to excessive use of force, research on this topic in correctional institutions is scarce. The present study examined the relationship between psychopathy, aggression, and use of force in 27 correctional officers (COs) in Minnesota. The study collected self-report data from COs enrolled in Crisis Intervention Training. Using …

Parameters Bookshelf – Online Book Reviews
Author: Eliot A. Cohen
Reviewed by Lieutenant Colonel Zachary Griffiths, special assistant, Office of the Chief of Staff of the Army
Lieutenant Colonel Zachary Griffiths provides an insightful review of Professor Eliot A. Cohen’s book on leadership lessons through the lens of William Shakespeare’s work, a method that “helps readers see common challenges in new ways.” Griffiths describes Cohen’s structural approach to the book—a blend of modern examples with Shakespearean counterparts—and writes that The Hollow Crown’s “effective structure allows chapters to stand on their own while remaining part of a cohesive whole.” Griffiths also notes that “[a] deep appreciation …

Book Review: Cold Rivals: The New Era Of Us-China Strategic Competition, Jeffrey Reeves
Parameters Bookshelf – Online Book Reviews
Editor: Evan S. Medeiros
Reviewed by Dr. Jeffrey Reeves, associate professor, Naval War College, Naval Postgraduate School
Naval War College associate professor Dr. Jeffrey Reeves provides a thoughtful critique of this anthology on relations between the United States and China. After a brief note on US-Chinese relations during the Trump and Biden-Harris administrations, Reeves offers suggestions for further reading and implies that the book, while providing a “historical account of US-China relations and [chronicling] its evolution,” is not unique in its contributions compared to similar literature, though he does praise two chapters on economics and technology that “stand out.”

Impacts Of Cil Youth Transition Services In Northern Florida: A Case Study Of Ability 1st, Lillie Greiman, Rayna Sage, Chris Carlberg
Independent Living and Community Participation
For young people with disabilities, the transition from secondary education into adulthood can be challenging to navigate. Key services and supports may be lost, daily life and routines may change, and new responsibilities and expectations emerge. These transitions can be particularly challenging for youth in rural areas who face additional transportation, education, and housing barriers.
Centers for Independent Living (CILs), like Ability 1st in Northern Florida, provide valuable and impactful youth transition services to both the rural and urban communities they serve. This research report illustrates and evaluates this CIL's efforts to help transitioning youth with disabilities explore postsecondary …
Cleaning The Dirty Pool: Testing Interaction Effects Using Different Panel Model Specifications, Rhiannon Berry
Cleaning The Dirty Pool: Testing Interaction Effects Using Different Panel Model Specifications, Rhiannon Berry
Dissertations and Theses
This exploratory study seeks to uncover the most effective approaches for constructing interaction terms within panel models. With no preconceived hypothesis in mind, the primary aim is to discern which modeling configuration yields the most robust results, laying the foundation for future research in statistical modeling. Using a large data set of sentencing reforms passed between the mid-1970s and mid-2000s, this study systematically assesses interaction terms and determines the most appropriate modeling. Different specifications of sentencing reforms at the state level within different modeling specifications will be explored to highlight which models are most appropriate in predicting imprisonment rates. A Grounded Theory Analysis Of Honesty And Deception In Intimate Relationships, Lyndsey Kunzler Gerring
Theses and Dissertations
Although honesty is valued in intimate relationships, there has not been significant research on the range and different types of honesty and deception and their impacts on couples. The purpose of this study was to explore and define the role honesty plays in intimate relationships by examining the spectrum of honest and deceptive behaviors as described by participants. The study utilized qualitative methods to examine how romantic partners describe various types of honesty and deception in their relationships and the influence these have. The data was taken from part of a larger project on healthy and unhealthy relationships where semi-structured …

Good Vibes Are Contagious: Exploring Within- And Between-Person Predictors Of Grit In Group Environments, Rachel K. Edwards
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The groups we belong to and people we surround ourselves with can influence our goal pursuit through the types of goals we pursue and effort we put into pursuing them. Grit is one psychological construct encompassing passion and perseverance for goals that has yet to be thoroughly examined as it emerges across specific contexts. This thesis explored how perceptions of the group environment and group member goal interest and perseverance interact to influence individual context-specific grit. Study 1 examined a student club sample to investigate between-person associations of variables across groups exhibiting different levels of perceived interdependence. Study 2 aimed …
Variegated Order: Making Space For Neurodiverse Perspectives In Archives, Sophie Penniman
Variegated Order: Making Space For Neurodiverse Perspectives In Archives, Sophie Penniman
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
This article aims to envision how archives could better reflect and represent neurodivergent records creators—people whose brains function in ways that diverge significantly from dominant societal standards of “normal". It discusses how neurodivergent records creators and their recordkeeping behaviors often do not fit within traditional archival paradigms which center verbal, written, and linear documents in specific organizational systems. The article then brings together sources from disability studies, feminist and gender studies, library studies, literary analysis, and archival scholarship to imagine ways in which the principle of provenance could be expanded to fit the archives of neurodiverse creators (and archives that …

How Accessible Are European Public Archives? An Assessment Of The Compliance With The Council Of Europe Recommendation R(2000)13 On A European Policy On Access To Archives, Michael Friedewald, Ivan Szekely, Murat Karaboga
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
This paper takes as its starting point the lessons learned from the second pan-European study on access to archives conducted 20 years after the first one – with the understanding that these results may also provide global lessons. The principal aim of the study was to assess the European archives' compliance with the Council of Europe Recommendation No. R(2000)13 on a European policy on access to archives, which was adopted in July 2000 and was the first international norm in this field. Although the overall access situation in Europe has significantly improved over the past 20 years, several practices still …

The Intersection Of Disability, Gender, And Sexual Violence Perceptions In Juror Decision-Making, Melissa West
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Sexual violence is a societal epidemic and disproportionally affects disabled women. Disabled women belong to an intersectional identity that also experiences more negative attitudes, stigma, stereotypes, and discrimination than nondisabled individuals. In sexual assault cases, juror biases may translate into more detrimental attitudes toward disabled victims. The purpose of this study was to examine how these attitudes may impact outcomes in sexual assault trials when comparing disabled and nondisabled female victims. This study was conducted through the lens of just-world theory and feminist disability theory using a quantitative, experimental jury simulation design. The 304 participants in an online survey designed …

Childhood Trauma, Attachment, And Adult Leadership Styles, Joshua S. Duncan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Past researchers have shown relationships between leadership styles and attachment and that secure attachment is positively related to transformational leadership. However, there is a gap in the research on how childhood trauma and attachment security relate to leadership styles in adults. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine how childhood trauma and attachment security relate to transactional, transformational, and laissez-faire leadership styles. Social cognitive theory and attachment theory grounded this study. In this quantitative study, the specific research design was comparative. SurveyMonkey was used to gather data from supervisor/manager leaders who were recruited on social media (N = …
Limit Theory Of Local Polynomial Estimation In Functional Coefficient Regression, Ying Wang, Peter C. B. Phillips
Limit Theory Of Local Polynomial Estimation In Functional Coefficient Regression, Ying Wang, Peter C. B. Phillips
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Limit theory for functional coefficient cointegrating regression was recently found to be considerably more complex than earlier understood. The issues were explained and correct limit theory derived for the kernel weighted local constant estimator in Phillips and Wang (2023b). The present paper provides complete limit theory for the general kernel weighted local p-th order polynomial estimator of the functional coefficient and the coefficient deriva-tives. Both stationary and nonstationary regressors are allowed. Implications for bandwidth selection are discussed. An adaptive procedure to select the fit order p is proposed and found to work well. A robust t-ratio is constructed following the …

Perspective: The Evolution Of Hormones And Person Perception-A Quantitative Genetic Framework, Christopher I Gurguis, Tyler S Kimm, Teresa A Pigott
Student and Faculty Publications
Evolutionary biology provides a unifying theory for testing hypotheses about the relationship between hormones and person perception. Person perception usually receives attention from the perspective of sexual selection. However, because person perception is one trait in a suite regulated by hormones, univariate approaches are insufficient. In this Perspectives article, quantitative genetics is presented as an important but underutilized framework for testing evolutionary hypotheses within this literature. We note tacit assumptions within the current literature on psychiatric genetics, which imperil the interpretation of findings thus far. As regulators of a diverse manifold of traits, hormones mediate tradeoffs among an array of …

Brothers And Sisters From Another Mother–Promoting Inter-Cultural Understanding, Conflict Reduction, And Solidarity Among Partner Forces In The Sahel, Alain Tschudin, James Smith
New England Journal of Public Policy
The dynamics of war have changed markedly from conventional battlefield kinetic encounters to unconventional sub-threshold or asymmetric warfare, with combatants using new tactics and emergent technologies to gain a comparative advantage over their adversaries. In the face of such developments and mindful of globalized extremist challenges, we propose that fresh innovations should be encouraged with respect to the conventional training of international and African partner forces tasked with teaming up to engage security threats in the Sahel region. Accordingly, this article promotes a contemporary peacebuilding approach using a transformative, dialogical methodology that focuses on the promotion of greater inter-cultural understanding …

Scaling Expertise: A Note On Homophily In Online Discourse And Content Moderation, Dylan Weber
New England Journal of Public Policy
It is now empirically clear that the structure of online discourse tends toward homophily; users strongly prefer to interact with content and other users that are similar to them. I review the evidence for the ubiquity of homophily in discourse and highlight some of its worst effects including narrowed information landscape for users and increased spread of misinformation. I then discuss the current state of moderation frameworks at large social media platforms and how they are ill-equipped to deal with structural trends in discourse such as homophily. Finally, I sketch a moderation framework based on a principal of “scaling expertise” …
