Cedarville Has Most Beautiful Campus In Ohio; Fifth In Usa, Mark D. Weinstein
News Releases
Cedarville University is the fifth most beautiful campus among all Christian colleges in the nation according to Christian Universities Online. Cedarville is the highest-ranked university in Ohio--Bluffton College (No. 24) and Mount Vernon Nazarene University (No. 46) were the only other Ohio universities on the list.
The ranking described Cedarville’s campus as being “set on a rural, 400 acre campus, the area has a classic college-town feel to it with a comfortable, natural setting.” The description also highlighted Cedar Lake and the compact, modern architectural style of the buildings.

Despite Best Intentions: A Critical Analysis Of Social Justice Leadership And Decision Making, David E. Dematthews, Angus Shiva Mungal, Paul A. Carrola
Administrative Issues Journal
The purpose of this article is to explore the relationship between social justice leadership and organizational decision making in order to make recommendations for how principals can make more socially just decisions in difficult school contexts. This article begins with a discussion of social justice leadership, facets and theories associated with social justice, and how facets can be contradictory and problematic in practice. Then, rational choice theory is presented to detail key assumptions and criticisms that are associated with decision-making in complex organizations. Next, rational choice theory is utilized as a straw man for analyzing principal decision-making in complex organizations …

Debate, Speech Teams Help With Gospel Defense, Mark D. Weinstein
News Releases
While it would be easy for members of Cedarville University’s debate and forensic speech teams to boast about their national titles and individual honors, winning is not their primary goal. In fact, if you asked them, they’d probably tell you that winning is much farther down the list than most people would think.

In a recent analysis of the money flow in intercollegiate football, The Washington Post, laid out in considerable detail the not so surprising conclusion that revenue at the Power Five Conferences has increased dramatically over the past decade, while spending has exceeded the growth of revenue. Nationally between 2004 and 2014 some 48 athletic departments increased their income from $2.67B to $4.49B. Despite the apparent windfall 25 of those departments ran a deficit in 2014, and two of them, Auburn and Rutgers, lost more money in 2014 than they did in 2004.

The Rise Of Domestic Outsourcing And The Evolution Of The German Wage Structure, Deborah Goldschmidt, Johannes Schmieder
The Rise Of Domestic Outsourcing And The Evolution Of The German Wage Structure, Deborah Goldschmidt, Johannes Schmieder
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
The nature of the relationship between employers and employees has been changing over the last three decades, with firms increasingly relying on contractors, temp agencies, and franchises rather than hiring employees directly. We investigate the impact of this transformation on the wage structure by following jobs that are moved outside of the boundary of lead employers to contracting firms. For this end we develop a new method for identifying outsourcing of food, cleaning, security, and logistics services in administrative data using the universe of social security records in Germany. We document a dramatic growth of domestic outsourcing in Germany since …

Despite the ease of creation, the web is ephemeral. The fleeting nature of websites present a challenge to repositories when a record needs to be preserved. The Graduate Center Library was recently presented with this challenge with the increase of submissions of online components to dissertations. This presentation focused on the need to capture a snapshot, the limitations of current normative practices and some alternative approaches.

"Last On The Warpath": The Spirit And Intent Of Action Anthropology, Joshua J. Smith
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Led by anthropologist Sol Tax, action anthropologists endeavoured, between the 1940s and 1970s, to challenge the liberal imperialist and settler colonial paradigm of Post-WWII applied anthropology, the termination policy of the 1950s, and the neo-evolutionary theories, such as Julian Steward’s multilinear evolution, that bolstered racist-colonial myths of assimilation. Several projects of emphasis include The Fort Berthold Removal Project, The American Indian Chicago Centre, A mapping project called The North American Indians: 1950 Distribution of Descendants of the Aboriginal Population of Alaska, Canada and the United States, and the American Indian Chicago Conference . In addition to Sol Tax, …

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender People's Attitudes To End-Of-Life Decision-Making And Advance Care Planning, Mark Hughes, Colleen Cartwright
Professor Colleen M Cartwright
Aim: To examine lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people's attitudes to advance care planning (ACP) options and alternative decision-making at the end of life.Method: Three hundred and five LGBT people completed an online or paper-based questionnaire, comprising fixed-choice questions and open-ended questions. Results: Most respondents, particularly those identifying as female or transgender, preferred a partner to be their alternative decision-maker at the end of life should the need arise. Fifty-two per cent of respondents had spoken to this person about their wishes. Regarding legal options enabling end-of-life decision-making, 29% had an enduring power of attorney, 18% an enduring guardian …

Lgbt People's Knowledge Of And Preparedness To Discuss End-Of-Life Care Planning Options, Mark Hughes, Colleen M. Cartwright
Professor Colleen M Cartwright
Despite the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS, end-of-life care planning among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities is relatively under-researched, especially in Australia. This paper reports findings of a survey of 305 LGBT people living in New South Wales, which examined their knowledge of and attitudes towards end-of-life care. The focus of this paper is their preparedness to discuss with healthcare providers any end-of-life care plans. The results highlight that while the majority of respondents were aware of three of the four key end-of-life care planning options available in New South Wales – enduring powers of attorney, enduring guardians and …

The Space Of The Social, Christopher D. Wilkes
The Space Of The Social, Christopher D. Wilkes
Christopher D Wilkes
This is chapter two of the Jane Austen book-length project, Social Jane. Landscape, houses and estates form the backdrop to much of what happens in the Austen novels, and Austen is entirely familiar with the theories of landscape of her time. She sets about debunking Whig improvers, while decimating the pretensions of the Tory do-nothings she saw around her. Benign and cautious progress seems to be her preferred model of land management. The chapter rehearses the social and architectural theories of her time, shows her use of these theories in her characters and in her work, and tries to liberate …

Culinary Jane Austen, Christopher D. Wilkes
Christopher D Wilkes
In the world of domestic intimacy that Jane Austen fashions for us, food, its production, preparation and consumption, appears almost nowhere, at least in the novels themselves. But there is a complex moral economy that surrounds food, and its analysis tells us much of the broader social and economic hierarchies that swirled around the Austen families, as they engaged in a struggle for social recognition and social maintenance. When we take the Austen films into account, this analysis gains sharpness, and makes what is often inferred very clear indeed. This paper examines the social meaning of these culinary habits, first …

Social Jane: The Sociology Of Jane Austen, Christopher D. Wilkes
Christopher D Wilkes
This chapter is part of a book-length project of six chapters called Social Jane. It sets the political and social context of Jane Austen's novels, and argues for her sociology in two directions. First, it takes trouble to set the social and historical context for her work. Second, it pays attention to her sociological analysis of social forms, and in particular, her brilliant exposé of the intricacies of social hierarchy. Finally, it resolves the question of Austen's own position in the social hierarchy.

It is a commonplace for campuses to extol the virtues of ‘International Experience’, to encourage higher levels of engagement in Study Abroad programs, and to try to draw more international students to their campuses. In this article, I give an account of my own experience as a Fulbright Program Advisor and Study Abroad faculty member.

What "Context" Can Justify Walter Rodney's Assassination?, Rohit Kanhai
What "Context" Can Justify Walter Rodney's Assassination?, Rohit Kanhai
Groundings
Like water crashing over the seawalls, there has been a rush of explanations, based on “context” to justify the shifting political sands, as it swirls with the waves. The “sands of time” seems to have shifted the “line in the sand” so much so, that all commonsense seems to have deserted the land of Guyana. In the midst of this debate are Walter Rodney and the Working People’s Alliance (WPA). The debaters are WPA members and supporters. The debate itself would make such identities questionable. There are hints of George Orwell’s Animal Farm and 1984 in terms of the rewriting …

Walter Rodney Commission Of Inquiry Was About Justice Delayed, Wazir Mohamed
Groundings
The Justice for Walter Rodney Committee has been following with interest the statements of the current government of Guyana through its spokespersons, Ministers Basil Williams (Attorney General) and Raphael Trotman (Governance Minister). From the statements attributed to these officials, their comments demonstrate that they are on a campaign to disparage, denigrate, and thus create the impression that the Walter Rodney Commission of Inquiry did not accomplish anything of substance. It is not clear why this would be in the interest of the government of Guyana.
