Social Physique Anxiety And Body Image Of Middle School Youth: A Longitudinal Study (Fffa2016-Web.Pdf), Mary Jo Maccracken, Robert E. Stadulis Dec 2015

Social Physique Anxiety And Body Image Of Middle School Youth: A Longitudinal Study (Fffa2016-Web.Pdf), Mary Jo Maccracken, Robert E. Stadulis

Dr. Mary J. MacCracken

Adolescents confronted with bodily changes and weight control problems may develop
a special type of anxiety (called social physique anxiety or SPA) related to their body
build. The present investigation attempted to determine if SPA, as assessed by the
Social Physique Anxiety Scale for Children (SPAS-C: Fender-Scarr, et al., 2003a, 2003b,
Stadulis, et al., 2005), persists or changes over age. The current study tries to discern if
changes in body composition (Body Mass Index or BMI) from year to year are associated
with changes in anxiety. Children’s perceptions of their physique (actual) as well
as ideal body physique were assessed …

Workforce Innovation And Opportunity Act Implementation: Ethical Considerations For Counseling Practice, Christine Anderson Dec 2015

Workforce Innovation And Opportunity Act Implementation: Ethical Considerations For Counseling Practice, Christine Anderson

Christine Anderson

The Vocational Rehabilitation program exists to assist individuals with disabilities to attain, secure and benefit from employment.  The purpose of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA), which included the Rehabilitation Act Amendments of 1998, is to empower individuals with disabilities to maximize employment. The Act was reauthorized as the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014.  The Act includes significant changes to rehabilitation service delivery including a stronger emphasis on services to youth and outreach to minority populations.  Despite the changes, the Act is vague and does not include methods for implementation.  Although the specifics for implementation of WIOA …

Review Of Deborah Gee, Director, Slaying The Dragon Elaine H. Kim, Director, Slaying The Dragon: Reloaded, Emily S. Wu

Emily Wu

Slaying the Dragon: Reloaded, also produced in 2011, boasts on its DVD box the equally ferocious description of “[s]licing and dicing representations of Asian women in the media.” The 2-DVD set includes Slaying the Dragon, an earlier documentary that covers the images of Asian characters in American film up to 1988, and Slaying the Dragon: Reloaded, which updates the discussion with considerations of not only films, but also a wide range of public and social media through the 1990s and the first decade of the twenty-first century. ~ article excerpt

Asymmetric Forecast Densities For U.S. Macroeconomic Variables From A Gaussian Copula Model Of Cross-Sectional And Serial Dependence, Michael S. Smith, Shaun Vahey Dec 2015

Asymmetric Forecast Densities For U.S. Macroeconomic Variables From A Gaussian Copula Model Of Cross-Sectional And Serial Dependence, Michael S. Smith, Shaun Vahey

Michael Stanley Smith

Most existing reduced-form macroeconomic multivariate time series models employ elliptical disturbances, so that the forecast densities produced are symmetric. In this paper, we use a copula model with asymmetric margins to produce forecast densities with the scope for severe departures from symmetry. Empirical and skew t distributions are employed for the margins, and a high-dimensional Gaussian copula is used to jointly capture cross-sectional and (multivariate) serial dependence. The copula parameter matrix is given by the correlation matrix of a latent stationary and Markov vector autoregression (VAR). We show that the likelihood can be evaluated efficiently using the unique partial correlations, …

Restorative Justice From The Margins To The Center- The Emergence Of A New Norm In School Discipline.Pdf, Thalia Gonzalez Dec 2015

Restorative Justice From The Margins To The Center- The Emergence Of A New Norm In School Discipline.Pdf, Thalia Gonzalez

Thalia Gonzalez

Changing norms is a difficult process that requires society to discard previously held ideas, morals, and practices. In the case of school discipline, this means abandoning the long accepted practice of zero tolerance and its associated values, identities, and processes of punishment and exclusion. While there has been attention in the literature to changes in school discipline at the local, state, and federal levels—relative to zero tolerance—scholars have not engaged in inquires tracing the emergence of restorative justice, its consequent cascade, and institutionalization as a new norm. This Article aims to …

Sketching As Visual Dialogue.Pdf, Andreas Luescher Dec 2015

Sketching As Visual Dialogue.Pdf, Andreas Luescher

Andreas Luescher

Sketching is one of the earliest known forms of communication. It’s a record of thoughts, ideas and visions. It may sound simple, but it’s actually quite complex, because the expression of sketching varies according to an individual’s personal style, visual thinking and imagination, and is also related to one’s context and culture.  Sketching is a form of auto-reflection that encourages the mirroring of events that may not be noticed by the conscious mind, and daydreams that occur frequently in different working and life settings. For architects, these sketches can reveal the desire for a different and more intimate relationship between …

Transforming Motives And Mentors: The Heroic Leadership Of James Macgregor Burns, George R. Goethals, Scott T. Allison Dec 2015

Transforming Motives And Mentors: The Heroic Leadership Of James Macgregor Burns, George R. Goethals, Scott T. Allison

Scott T. Allison

A full consideration of human motives particularly relevant to leadership is prompted by James MacGregor Burns’ interest in Abraham Maslow’s hierarchical theory of motivation, and its principle that motives can grow, develop and change throughout the life cycle, along with other stages or patterns of development, whether they be cognitive, emotional and moral.  The range of human motives, particularly the need to have value and be significant, opens to potential leaders ways of attracting followers to themselves and their causes.  In the case of transforming leaders, as defined by Burns, these leaders and causes will engage followers in ways that …

A Non-Mainstream Perspective On The United States Foreign Policy An Essay, Mohan Limaye Dec 2015

A Non-Mainstream Perspective On The United States Foreign Policy An Essay, Mohan Limaye

Mohan Limaye

The intent of this paper is to induce the readers to think for themselves about the United States Foreign Policy (USFP) and not let the “experts” do it for them and, in the process, help get our country out of the foreign policy morass it has been in for the last at least seventy years.  It may be generally agreed that the ideological roots of USFP and the drivers of this nation’s actions in the global arena have been the constructs of Manifest Destiny and American Exceptionalism.  These ideas have led the US over the course of its history to …

The Effect Of Population Aging On Economic Growth, The Labor Force And Productivity, David Powell Dec 2015

The Effect Of Population Aging On Economic Growth, The Labor Force And Productivity, David Powell

David Powell

Population aging is widely assumed to have detrimental effects on economic growth yet there is little empirical evidence about the magnitude of its effects.  This paper starts from the observation that many U.S. states have already experienced substantial growth in the size of their older population and much of this growth was predetermined by historical trends in fertility. We use predicted variation in the rate of population aging across U.S. states over the period 1980-2010 to estimate the economic impact of aging on state output per capita. We find that a 10% increase in the fraction of the population ages 60+ decreases …

Racial Emotions And The Feeling Of Equality, Janine Young Kim Dec 2015

Racial Emotions And The Feeling Of Equality, Janine Young Kim

Janine Kim

This Article examines two distinct but related questions regarding race and emotions. The first raises the possibility that there are certain emotions that are so closely tied to racial experiences that they can be said to demonstrate and typify an emotional dimension to the construct of race. The second asks how such quintessentially racial emotions can be analyzed and evaluated, employing three theories of emotion that have developed in various disciplines within the humanities and social sciences. These theories reveal that racial emotions are not idiosyncratic and elusive, but instead relate to reason and values, to social membership and hierarchy, …

Empathy And Leadership, Ronald T. Humphrey, Laural Adams Dec 2015

Empathy And Leadership, Ronald T. Humphrey, Laural Adams

Scott T. Allison

Empathy helps explain why heroes take risks on behalf of others and make personal sacrifices for people and causes that they believe in. The chapter relates the literature on heroes and empathy to the research on charismatic leadership, and maintains that empathy and heroic behavior are key components of charismatic leadership. Although heroic empathy can be seen as a characteristic of heroic individuals, this chapter also examines heroic empathy from a distributed cognition perspective that positions heroic leaders in the larger context of the organization and in the system in which the organization resides. By using a distributed cognition approach, …

Paradoxical Truths In Heroic Leadership: Implications For Leadership Development And Effectiveness, Scott T. Allison, Jennifer L. Cecilione Dec 2015

Paradoxical Truths In Heroic Leadership: Implications For Leadership Development And Effectiveness, Scott T. Allison, Jennifer L. Cecilione

Scott T. Allison

In this chapter, we discuss the basic elements of heroic leadership, showing how heroism and exemplary leadership are deeply intertwined. We then describe six paradoxical truths about heroic leadership that are often unrecognized and unappreciated. We believe that ignorance of these counterintuitive truths and paradoxes about heroic leadership can lead to misunderstandings about leaders, leadership, and leadership development. Most of these paradoxes are a central part of the hero’s journey as described by comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell (1949). We will discuss the genesis of these paradoxical truths, and we will suggest ways that an awareness of these principles can engender …

How Mediated Sporting Events Constitute Nationalism: Chinese Newspapers Covering The 2014 Incheon Asian Games, Steve Dittmore Dec 2015

How Mediated Sporting Events Constitute Nationalism: Chinese Newspapers Covering The 2014 Incheon Asian Games, Steve Dittmore

Steve Dittmore

Informed by framing theory, the study strove to investigate nationalism by examining Chinese newspaper coverage of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games. Through document and textual analysis of 324 articles from 5 mainstream newspapers, the study indicated that Chinese newspapers always portrayed Chinese athletes as
“dominating the competition” and “lacking opponents in Asia” while portraying other countries’ athletes as “less competitive” and not at the “level of Chinese athletes.” The results also suggested that Chinese newspapers tried to positively spin the story when reporting the failure of Chinese athletes at the Asian Games. However, to increase readership and enhance public awareness …

The Last Autonomist, Richard Adelstein Dec 2015

The Last Autonomist, Richard Adelstein

Richard Adelstein

Louis Brandeis was the greatest opponent of industrial "bigness," but not the first. After a brief introduction to his life and intellectual commitment to small scale and decentralization of authority in both production and government, this essay considers Brandeis's ideas about policy toward large firms in the context of the controversy in the United States Supreme Court over the interpretation of the Sherman Act between 1890 and 1911. Opponents of bigness ("autonomists") on the Court believed that allowing the market to determine the size of firms made firms too large and supported direct controls on growth, and opposed the common …
