This article demonstrates an alternative ontological and epistemological approach to critical

inquiry with quantitative methods. By building on new materialists thought, the critical

possibilities of quantification are reconsidered via a diffractive methodology. By diffractively

reading through multiple sources of data the article demonstrates how to critically analyze the

multiplicity of “difference” in parenting practices. The diffracted results point toward the ways

in which parenting practices are a result of myriad forces that cannot be reduced to pathology or

deficiency but rather convey the inheritance of constraining and disenabling sociocultural and

Conceptualizations of urban context and place in research, practice, and policy are relational, ranging from spatial dimensions to cultural practices of children, families, and communities in metropolitan areas. In this article, we focus on the inherent complexity of these conceptualizations and long-standing debates in education and social science research that label urban as a point of both identity and designation. We position urban context itself as a genre of thinking and imagining; challenges complicated in research, scholarship, and policy; practice and pedagogy; and public will and political rhetoric, influencing educational options and spanning issues from poverty to schooling.

Background: Much has been written about Black undergraduate men’s out-of-class engagement and social experiences, identity development, participation in intercollegiate athletics, and college enrollment and completion rates. Too little is known about their academic readiness and first-year college adjustment.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand Black male students’ academic transition experiences in the first college year, with a particular emphasis on how they resolved academic challenges with which they were confronted.

Scholars in development communication have called for a more participatory approach in development programs. However, the traditional, generally top-down approach associated with the modernization paradigm still dominates in practice [1]. The mere existence of participatory models has not been enough to move the participatory approach to prominence. Sparks has noticed the discrepancy between theory and practice observing that although the dominant paradigm has been disparaged and the participatory paradigm praised since the 1970s, researchers have been slow to adopt participatory methods [1]. Much of the research that brings the concept of enregisterment into conversation with sociolinguistic variation has to do with how sets of linguistic forms come to be heard as dialects or regional accents: registers linked with places (Beal, 2010; Eberhardt, 2012; Johnstone & Baumgardt, 2004; Johnstone, 2009; Remlinger, 2010). But the process of dialect enregisterment often involves the previous or simultaneous enregisterment of the same or overlapping sets of forms with incorrectness and/or social class (Johnstone, Andrus, & Danielson, 2006), and sets of linguistic forms can become enregistered with prestige and authority (“Received Pronunciation”) (Agha, 2003) profession (“legalese,” for example), …

Prior work on argument structure development has shown connections between abstract verb meaning and argument structure; neuroimaging and behavioral studies have shown connections between verb meaning and body effectors. Here we examine the contingencies between verbs, their most likely body region pairing, and argument structure. We ask whether the verbs used in six common syntactic frames are specifically linked to one of three main regions of the body: head, arm, leg. The purpose of this chapter is to review the literature to explore reasons why African Americans are overrepresented among victims and perpetrators of interpersonal violence. In the first section, I will define historical trauma and discuss gender differences in prevalence rates of fatal and nonfatal violent criminal victimization and prevalence rates of physical, sexual, and psychological intimate partner violence. In the next section, I will describe the ecological model and discuss risk factors for interpersonal violence at the individual, relationship, community, and societal levels. This study explored prevalence rates and factors associated with lifetime severe physical intimate partner violence among U.S. Black women. Data from the National Survey of American Life were examined. Rates of severe physical intimate partner violence were higher among African American women compared with U.S. Caribbean Black women. Risk factors associated with reported abuse were similar to those found in earlier studies but differed by ethnic backgrounds. Demographic, resource, and situational factors were associated with severe physical intimate partner violence among U.S. Black women in general but made unique contributions by ethnic group. While information about the collection is limited, the pictures have presumably been taken by Werner von Bolternstern, a photographer and avid postcard collector, who donated the collection (among many others) to LMU. In this article, we review the psychology of hero development and hero worship. We propose that heroes and hero narratives fulfill important cognitive and emotional needs, including the need for wisdom, meaning, hope, inspiration, and growth. We propose a framework called the heroic leadership dynamic (HLD) to explain how need-based heroism shifts over time, from our initial attraction to heroes to later retention or repudiation of heroes. Central to the HLD is idea that hero narratives fulfill both epistemic and energizing functions.
