Older Adults’ Explanatory Models Of High Blood Pressure, Margo Hurwicz, Margaret Rose Dec 2015

Older Adults’ Explanatory Models Of High Blood Pressure, Margo Hurwicz, Margaret Rose

Margo-Lea Hurwicz

Shared Explanatory Models (EM) of High Blood Pressure (HBP)/Hypertension (HTN) were explored using systematic data collection and analysis methods from cognitive anthropology. Older adults who were members of a Medicare HMO in Los Angeles were asked to list all the illnesses experienced by older adults that they could recall, and those listing HBP or HTN were asked to further list and discuss its symptoms, causes, treatments and prevention. Responses were tape recorded, transcribed, and analyzed to develop a systematic “sentence completion by card sort” follow-up procedure. Consensus Analysis (CA) of the systematically collected data identified shared EM for HBP/HTN. The …

Using Social Norms As A Substitute For Law, Bryan H. Druzin Dec 2015

Using Social Norms As A Substitute For Law, Bryan H. Druzin

Bryan H. Druzin

This paper follows the law and norms literature in arguing that policymakers can use social norms to support or even replace regulation. Key to the approach offered here is the idea — borrowed from the folk theorem in game theory — that cooperative order can arise in circumstances where parties repeatedly interact. This paper proposes that repeated interaction between the same agents, specifically the intensity of it, may be used as a yardstick with which to gauge the potential to scale back regulation and use social norms as a substitute for law. Where there are very high levels of repeated …

Intermediary’S Technology Satisfaction And Performance In Chhattisgarh Public Distribution System: Research Note, Varun Chhabra, Prashant Rajan, Shweta Chopra

Prashant Rajan

Centralized online real-time electronic Public Distribution System (COREPDS) is one of the various technological and administrative reforms introduced by state government of Chhattisgarh to empower beneficiary. COREPDS allows the beneficiary to choose fair price shop where they can purchase subsidized commodities. Salespersons’ working in the fair price shops are the primary operators of point-of-sale (POS) devices introduced in COREPDS. The fact that adoption of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is mandatory in egovernance makes it important to study technology satisfaction. In this research note, we propose to investigate the relationship between fair price shop performance after the implementation of point-of-sale …

Student Conceptions Of Expertise, Charles Bertram, Anne E. Leak, Eleanor C. Sayre, Mary Bridget Kustusch, Scott V. Franklin

Mary Bridget Kustusch

We report on student beliefs about what constitutes expertise. Our population is a group of first-generation and deaf/hard-of-hearing students participating in a pre-matriculation university program designed to encourage reflection and metacognitive practice. Students first worked in small groups to articulate criteria that defined expertise and then engaged in a class discussion in which a formal definition was developed. All activities were recorded and student discourse analyzed, revealing a nuanced and evolving understanding of expertise.

Learning And Coordination In The Presidential Primary System, Mattias K. Polborn, Helios H. Herrera, George Deltas Dec 2015

Learning And Coordination In The Presidential Primary System, Mattias K. Polborn, Helios H. Herrera, George Deltas

Mattias K Polborn

To analyze the performance of the U.S. presidential primary system, we develop a model with horizontally and vertically differentiated candidates. Voters are uncertain about candidates' valences, and use results in earlier elections to update their beliefs. The temporal organization of primaries affects both voter learning and vote splitting, i.e., several candidates in the same policy position competing for the same voter pool. Sequential voting minimizes vote-splitting in late districts, but voters may coordinate on the wrong candidate. We structurally estimate the model using the 2008 Democratic presidential primaries. Using the parameter estimates, we conduct policy experiments such as replacing the …

Why K-Pop Will Continue To Dominate Social Media: Jenkins' Convergence Culture In Action, Keidra Chaney, Raizel Liebler Dec 2015

Why K-Pop Will Continue To Dominate Social Media: Jenkins' Convergence Culture In Action, Keidra Chaney, Raizel Liebler

Raizel Liebler

YouTube’s first music awards surprised many mainstream music fans in 2013, when the Korean pop (“K-pop”) group Girls’ Generation beat out many U.S. pop music stars for Video of the Year (Yang, 2013). In 2015, the fans of K-pop group T-ara won Billboard’s Fan Army Face-Off, beating out the fans of well-established Western artists like One Direction and Beyoncé (“Fan Army,” 2015). The matchup against One Direction led to the globally trending hashtag on Twitter, #WeLove1DandKpop (“Fan Army,” 2015). While some U.S. critics and Western music fans may see these events as flukes, there is a complex history at play …

Space Invaders: Measuring Use And Satisfaction Through Mixed Methods, Nataly Blas, Denise Blanchet, Jennifer Masunaga Dec 2015

Space Invaders: Measuring Use And Satisfaction Through Mixed Methods, Nataly Blas, Denise Blanchet, Jennifer Masunaga

Jennifer Masunaga

How can libraries gather evidence to see which spaces and what resources students find engaging? What is the role of the information commons space in students’ academic life? This poster will explore different aspects from a mixed methods research study of the Information Commons (IC) at a medium-sized academic library.

The poster will provide an overview of recent space assessment studies in academic libraries, as well as characteristics of “generation Z” and “millenials” preferences.  Additionally, the poster will demonstrate the three research methods used to collect data: observation, surveys, and whiteboard polls. The first data collection method consisted of 2,443 …

Atg Interviews Don Beagle (Library Director, Belmont Abbey College), Barbara Tierney

Barbara Tierney

Barbara Tierney interviewed Don Beagle (Library Director, Belmont Abbey College) and asked the following questions:
Of your predictions ten years ago, where do you think you hit the mark?
Did you have predictions from 2006 that did not pan out as expected?
Do you still think the Learning Commons is a valid model for the library of the future?
In your 3-part blog for ACRL's dh+lib webcenter, you related the LC to digital humanities initiatives.  How different of how similar is that part of the LC vision to the Digital Scholarship Center movement?
You mentioned the James Hunt Library at …

Islands As `Bad' Geography. Insularity, Connectedness, Trade Costs And Trade, Luca De Benedictis, Anna Maria Pinna Dec 2015

Islands As `Bad' Geography. Insularity, Connectedness, Trade Costs And Trade, Luca De Benedictis, Anna Maria Pinna

Luca De Benedictis

In this paper we explore the geographical dimension of insularity, measuring its effect on a comprehensive measure of trade costs (Novy 2012). Controlling for other geographical characteristics, connectedness (spatial proximity) and the role of historical events in shaping modern attitudes towards openness (measured through a quantification of routes descriptions in logbooks between 1750 and 1850), we give evidence that to be an island is not bad per se. Bad geography can be reversed by connectedness and open institutions.

Haunted Histories And Ambiguous Burial Grounds In Iraqi Kurdistan, Nahro Zagros, Tyler Fisher, Muslih Mustafa Dec 2015

Haunted Histories And Ambiguous Burial Grounds In Iraqi Kurdistan, Nahro Zagros, Tyler Fisher, Muslih Mustafa

Tyler Fisher

As part of a wider research project that documents site-specific oral history associated with caves and cemeteries among the rapidly changing populations of Iraqi Kurdistan, the present study analyzes oral histories and traditions concerning one particular graveyard. Reputed to be the burial site of seventh-century Muslim conquerors, this graveyard is concomitantly preserved by taboo and subject to transgressive acts. This article discusses the anachronisms that underpin the cemetery’s reputation, the aetiological functions of the local lore, and the shifting significance of the memorial space in relation to current events. As the region faces the menace of the self-declared Islamic State, …

An Examination Of Community Practice Social Workers As Social Intrapreneurs Or Social Entrepreneurs, Monica Nandan, Gokul Mandayam, Carol S. Collard, Rebekah Tchouta

Monica Nandan

Social entrepreneurs and social intrapreneurs are characterized as being socially innovative, proactive and willing to take calculated risks. Evidenced by their practices and behaviors, community practice social workers engage in social change in ways similar to those of social entrepreneurs and social intrapreneurs. This article describes the findings of an explorative study that used survey design methodology to understand the level of social entrepreneurship or social intrapreneurship behaviors of twenty-seven community practice social workers in a Midwestern state.  These findings have implications for training and educating community practice social workers, and social entrepreneurs and social intrapreneurs, as they attempt to …

Building An Airplane While Flying It: One Community's Experience With Community Food Transformation, Catherine Sands, Carol Stewart, Sarah Bankert, Alexandra Hillman, Laura Fries

Catherine Sands

Across the country, local and regional food policy councils are collaborating to make healthy, affordable food more available to everyone. What ingredients are needed for a true collaboration that changes social and racial equity dynamics? How can these collaborations influence systems, policy, and awareness in school food environments, specifically? This reflective case study describes some of the accomplishments and challenges faced by the multistakeholder Holyoke Food and Fitness Policy Council (HFFPC) for nearly a decade. Using a mixed-method participatory evaluation approach to lift up diverse partners' insights, we conducted key informant interviews with people who were engaged with the project …

The Role Of Coordination Bias In Platform Competition, Hanna Halaburda, Yaron Yehezkel Dec 2015

The Role Of Coordination Bias In Platform Competition, Hanna Halaburda, Yaron Yehezkel

Hanna Halaburda

This paper considers platform competition in a two-sided market that includes buyers and sellers. One of the platforms benefits from a favorable coordination bias in the market, in that for this platform it is less costly than for the other platform to convince customers that the two sides will coordinate on joining it. We find that the degree of the coordination bias affects the platform's decision regarding the business model (i.e., whether to subsidize buyers or sellers), the access fees and the size of the platform. A slight increase in the coordination bias may induce the advantaged platform to switch …

The Empty Rhetoric Of The Smart City: From Digital Inclusion To Economic Promotion In Philadelphia, Alan Wiig Dec 2015

The Empty Rhetoric Of The Smart City: From Digital Inclusion To Economic Promotion In Philadelphia, Alan Wiig

Alan Wiig

Smart city initiatives have been adopted by cities worldwide, proposing forward- looking, technological solutions to urban problems big and small. These policies are indicative of a digitized urban condition, where social and economic exchange rely on globalized telecommunications networks, and governance strategies follow suit. Propelled through events such as IBM’s Smarter Cities Challenge, the smart city acts as a data-driven logic urban change where widespread benefit to a city and its residents is proposed, masking the utility of these policies to further entrepreneurial economic development strategies. In this article, I present a case study of the Digital On-Ramps initiative that …

Social Capital And Climate Change Adaptation, Daniel P. Aldrich, Courtney M. Page, Chris Paul Dec 2015

Social Capital And Climate Change Adaptation, Daniel P. Aldrich, Courtney M. Page, Chris Paul

Daniel P Aldrich

A great deal of research has shown how social capital (the bonding, bridging, and linking connections to others) provides information on trustworthiness, facilitates collective action, and connects us to external resources during disasters and crises. We know far less about the relationship between social capital and adaptation behaviors in terms of the choices that people make to accommodate changing environmental conditions. A number of unanswered but critical questions remain: How precisely does social capital function in climate change adaptation? To what degree does strong bonding social capital substitute for successful adaptation behaviors for individuals or groups? Which combinations of social …
