This chapter gives an overview of the context of qualitative data and the resulting support needs of qualitative researchers at various stages of the research data lifecycle. The current state of qualitative data support services in social sciences librarianship is then explored by reporting on (1) an analysis of social sciences data librarian job postings, (2) a survey of social sciences librarians, and (3) an examination of online research guides describing qualitative data support services presently offered by social sciences librarians. Finally, this chapter concludes with recommendations for how social sciences librarians might embark on the expansion of their qualitative …

A First Look At Natural Mentoring Among Preadolescent Foster Children, Johanna K.P. Greeson, Lindsey Weiler, Allison E. Thompson, Heather Taussig
Johanna K.P. Greeson, PhD, MSS, MLSP
This study describes natural mentoring among preadolescent children placed in out-of-home care and examines the association between natural mentoring and demographic, maltreatment, placement, and psychosocial characteristics. Cross-sectional data from a sample of 263 children and their out-of-home caregivers were analyzed. Caregivers rated children’s social skills, and children reported on their perceived opportunities and attachment to peers and adults, including natural mentors. About half the sample endorsed having natural mentors, with school personnel being the most common type of mentor. Children with natural mentors were older, more likely to be living in congregate care, and had stronger attachment to friends. Marginally …

Natural Mentoring Among Older Youth In And Aging Out Of Foster Care: A Systematic Review, Allison E. Thompson, Johanna K.P. Greeson
Johanna K.P. Greeson, PhD, MSS, MLSP
Due to their histories of caregiver maltreatment, living instability, and potential attachment challenges associated with out-of-home care, older foster youth represent a particularly vulnerable group of adolescents at increased risk for a number of poor well-being outcomes. However, research supports the notion that a relationship with a competent, caring adult, such as a mentor, may serve protectively for vulnerable youth, and a nascent yet grow- ing body of literature suggests that naturally occurring mentoring relationships from within youth's social net- works are associated with improved outcomes among young people in foster care during adolescence and the transition to adulthood. This …

‘It’S Morning Again In America’: How The Tuesday Team Revolutionized The Use Of Music In Political Ads, Paul Christiansen Ph.D.
Paul Christiansen
The year 1984 was a watershed in the use of music in U.S. television campaign advertising. Following on the heels of technological developments in sound reproduction in television sets and MTV’s inception three years earlier, the 1984 presidential campaign saw striking changes in the way ads were conceived and constructed. “Prouder, Stronger, Better”—known popularly as “Morning in America”—used music as never before in a political ad. Whereas previously music was merely accompaniment to an ad’s voiceover and images, here, for the first time, music is the argument itself. Sweeping orchestral gestures, frequent chromatic modulations, and suspended chords lead to a …

Life In The Law-Thick World: The Legal Resource Landscape For Ordinary Americans, Gillian K. Hadfield, Jamie Heine
Gillian K Hadfield
Most advanced democracies are thick with law and regulation, rules that structure almost all social and economic relationships. Yet ordinary Americans, unlike their peers in other advanced systems, face this law-thick landscape with relatively few legal resources at their disposal. In this chapter, an updated version of Hadfield Higher Demand Lower Supply? A Comparative Assessment of the Legal Resource Landscape for Ordinary Americans (2009), we document what little data exists on the performance of legal markets for non-corporate clients in the U.S. Our results suggest that while the U.S. has nearly twice as many lawyers as comparable countries on a …

Scaffolding: Using Formal Contracts To Build Informal Relations To Support Innovation, Gillian K. Hadfield, Iva Bozovic

In a study that follows in Macaulay's (1963) footsteps, we asked businesses what role formal contract law plays in managing their external relationships. We heard similar answers to the ones Macaulay obtained fifty years ago from smaller companies that described important but non-innovation-oriented external relationships. But we also uncovered an important phenomenon: companies, large and small, that described innovation-oriented external relationships reported making extensive use of formal contracts to plan and manage these relationships. They do not, however, generate these formal contracts in order to secure the benefits of a credible threat of formal contract enforcement. Instead, like Macaulay's original …

In response to the rising costs of course materials, some academic libraries are evaluating and adjusting the ways in which they provide access to textbooks in all formats. Some popular initiatives include cultivating and promoting print textbook reserve collections, the acquisition of ebooks and etextbooks as alternatives to print, and Open Educational Resources (OERs). This column highlights initiatives at a variety of academic libraries designed to help mitigate the cost of course materials for students. Incorporating interviews and studies from the literature, projects at institutions such as North Carolina State University, George Mason University, and East Carolina University are highlighted, …

This paper investigates the historical development of the Grand Challenges concept in US science policy. The concept originated in advocacy for funding for high performance computing and was enshrined in the High Performance Computing Act of 1991. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Grand Challenges in Global Health program marked a second milestone in the application of the concept to US science funding. The National Academy of Engineering’s Grand Challenges in Engineering followed in 2008. Most recently the White House has pursued programs under the Grand Challenges rubric. The history of these varied initiatives spanning 40 years is examined here …

How can librarians incorporate innovative practices that provide insight into creating valuable student learning experiences? This lightning talk will chronicle how the business librarian used the curriculum map technique to identify information literacy skills and target essential learning in the business curriculum. The curriculum mapping process required the analysis of business course syllabi and the identification of relevant information literacy learning outcomes at institutional, departmental, and course levels. National standards and threshold concepts from the business literature were evaluated as well. This process helped pinpoint which learning outcomes lead to learning activities that promote practical information literacy skills needed by …

This article examines the overseas behaviour of Chinese non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in two African nations, Ethiopia an Malawi, with varying political regime types. Our inding suggest that, irrespective of regime type, Chinese NGOs have yet to make a substantial impact in either nation. We argue that, espite the strength o the Chinese state an high level of international development assistance given, domestic politics and regulatory frameworks in host nations still matter a great deal. Our study suggests that the Chinese model of international development will continue to be one in which temporary one-off projects are favoured; and, insofar as social …

This study examines the determinants of the European Union’s strategic engagement with China, with reference to three competing analytical approaches: institutional, social, and agency/stakeholder. The article examines the utility of each claim and outlines complementary variables amongst the three approaches, with the aid of recent evidence looking at the E.U.’s arms embargo on China, E.U.-China engagement in Africa, and the E.U.’s longstanding dispute on granting China market economy status. The findings can reduce the misunderstandings and uncertainties embedded in European Union-China interactions by demystifying the factors and variables that drive their relationship.

We introduce a construction which we label 'quasi-factive'. They are heard like factives, in that we immediately take the complement to be true. Yet they aren't really factive at all. Examples include: 'It's not widely known that Marta was born in Canada' (because she was born in Uruguay); 'Don't tell anyone that Carlos will run as a candidate' (because he won't); 'Did it bother Jane that Miguel came?' (no, because Miguel didn't come). We identify sub-categories of our quasi-factives, and then tentatively explore a pragmatic explanation of how they work their magic.

Everyday Diplomacy: Mission, Spectacle And The Remaking Of Diplomatic Culture, Costas M. Constantinou

Images, narratives and practices of diplomacy occur on a daily basis. The everydayness
and ordinariness of diplomacy, however, is not readily acknowledged – at least within the
discipline of International Relations (IR). In matters diplomatic, during the last century,
the discipline predominantly concentrated on the activities of the official agents of states
as infused by the aristocratic and bureaucratic tradition of the European international
society (Satow 1922, Nicolson 1939, Kissinger 1994). Even among critical IR scholars
considering the ‘future of diplomacy’ more recently, diplomacy is only reserved for the
work of diplomats representing sovereign territorial units. It is not meant …

This article explores biopolitical practices that extend beyond national borders and take the whole
of humanity as their province. It looks at how attempts to secure and optimize conditions of living
in Africa are not merely governmental in scope but also diplomatic in their conceptualization and
conduct. It specifically examines the merging of diplomacy, defence and development (or the 3Ds),
which purports to optimize life and shape ways of being in areas that cannot be ‘fully governed’
or resist domestication. It assesses the impact of diplomatic pluralization, characterized by the
militarization of diplomacy and development, the diplomatization of the military, …

At Grand Valley State University, the Libraries and several campus partners--including campus IT and offices that support faculty research and effective teaching--have come together to provide support for the creation and adoption of Open Educational Resources (OER) on our campus. But rather than developing brand new programs or asking for additional resources right at the start, we realized that each of our units already offers services that could support faculty creating and using OER. Through our OER Initiative, we’ve begun coordinating our efforts to promote these services and build relationships with each other and with faculty allies interested in doing …

Although the spatial structure of employment in large US metropolitan regions is a well-researched topic, few studies focus on medium-sized and small US metropolitan regions. Consequently, there is no overall typology relating small-to-medium urban form to employment distribution. We address this gap by investigating the spatial structure of employment in 356 metropolitan regions. We conceptualize six typologies based on three categories that have overlapping properties: “monocentricity,” “polycentricity,” and “generalized dispersion.” The study has three main findings. First, the three types of urban form that we identify as “hybrid” outnumber the three “pure” types by almost four to one. Second, job …

In remote valleys and plateaus of western China, village girls have been pushing their way into schools. Despite extreme family poverty, the vulnerabilities and low status of being a girl, the isolation of their villages, as well as the deplorable conditions of their schooling, girls persist in seeking an education. We examine forces of change where minimal human rights, minimal social justice, and multiple deprivations of freedomwere the norm. We brought to light village girls’ capabilities and their potential for gaining individual and collective social justice. Their schooling provided all the village girls with identity, legitimacy, visibility and respect …
