บทบาทของศาลรัฐธรรมนูญในการเมืองไทย (พ.ศ. 2541-2557), ชาย ไชยชิต

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้ศึกษาวิเคราะห์ถึงบทบาทหน้าที่ของศาลรัฐธรรมนูญไทยในช่วงเวลานับแต่ปี 2541 ถึงปี 2557 โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์หลักเพื่ออธิบายว่าการจัดตั้งสถาบันทางการเมืองรูปแบบใหม่นี้ขึ้นมาในโครงสร้างระบอบการเมืองของไทย ส่งผลให้กระบวนการทางการเมืองโดยรวมมีลักษณะเปลี่ยนแปลงไปจากในช่วงก่อนหน้านั้นอย่างไร การศึกษาวิเคราะห์รายละเอียดเนื้อหาคำวินิจฉัยของศาลรัฐธรรมนูญในช่วงเวลาดังกล่าว จำนวน 677 คำวินิจฉัย พบว่า คำวินิจฉัยของศาลรัฐธรรมนูญมีผลต่อการใช้อำนาจขององค์กรต่าง ๆ ได้แก่ รัฐสภา คณะรัฐมนตรี ศาลต่าง ๆ รวมถึงองค์กรอิสระตามรัฐธรรมนูญ ศาลรัฐธรรมนูญมีบทบาทในการวินิจฉัยข้อพิพาททางรัฐธรรมนูญหลายลักษณะ ได้แก่ การโต้แย้งปัญหาความชอบด้วยรัฐธรรมนูญแบบนามธรรมในช่วงก่อนและหลังกฎหมายประกาศใช้ การตั้งข้อกังขาเกี่ยวกับปัญหาความชอบด้วยรัฐธรรมนูญของกฎหมายที่ใช้พิพากษาคดีในศาล ข้อขัดแย้งเรื่องอำนาจขององค์กรตามรัฐธรรมนูญ การตีความรัฐธรรมนูญ รวมถึงปัญหาความถูกต้องสมบูรณ์ตามเงื่อนไขรัฐธรรมนูญของการดำรงตำแหน่งสาธารณะ การดำเนินกิจการพรรคการเมืองและกระบวนการทางการเมือง การทำหน้าที่ดังกล่าวแสดงให้เห็นว่าศาลรัฐธรรมนูญมีบทบาทในฐานะสถาบันที่ทำหน้าที่พิทักษ์ความเป็นกฎหมายสูงสุดของรัฐธรรมนูญ

การมุ่งสู่องค์การแห่งการเรียนรู้ : กรณีศึกษาเทศบาลตำบลเกาะคา เทศบาลเมืองกระบี่ และเทศบาลนครขอนแก่น, สุภะรัฐ ยอดระบำ

การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการเป็นองค์การแห่งการเรียนรู้ของเทศบาล ปัจจัยที่มีอิทธิพลต่อการเป็นองค์การแห่งการเรียนรู้ของเทศบาล และพัฒนาข้อเสนอในการส่งเสริมการเป็นองค์การแห่งการเรียนรู้ของเทศบาลโดยใช้วิธีการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพจากการศึกษาเทศบาลซึ่งเป็นกรณีศึกษา 3 แห่งที่ได้รับรางวัล หรือเกียรติคุณต่างๆ ซึ่งในการประเมินมีเกณฑ์และตัวชี้วัดที่แสดงให้เห็นถึงความเป็นองค์การแห่งการเรียนรู้ของเทศบาลนั้นๆ และเป็นหลักประกันถึงความเป็นเทศบาลแห่งการเรียนรู้ ได้แก่ เทศบาลนครขอนแก่น จังหวัดขอนแก่น เทศบาลเมืองกระบี่ จังหวัดกระบี่ และเทศบาลตำบลเกาะคา จังหวัดลำปาง เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัย คือ แบบสัมภาษณ์กึ่งมีโครงสร้างและการสังเกตแบบมีส่วนร่วม โดยผู้ให้ข้อมูลสำคัญ (Key informants) ได้แก่ 1.นายกเทศมนตรี 2.ปลัดเทศบาล 3.พนักงานเทศบาล และ 4.สมาชิกสภาเทศบาลของเทศบาลที่เป็นกรณีศึกษา ผลการวิจัยพบลักษณะร่วมจากเทศบาลทั้ง 3 แห่งซึ่งสอดคล้องกับทฤษฎีที่นำมาศึกษาว่า 1. การเป็นองค์การแห่งการเรียนรู้ของเทศบาล ประกอบด้วย คุณลักษณะองค์การที่มีการเรียนรู้เกิดขึ้นใน 3 ระดับ ได้แก่ 1) ระดับบุคคล (ความมุ่งมั่นพัฒนาตนเอง วิธีคิดที่เปิดกว้าง ความคิดเชิงระบบ และความคิดสร้างสรรค์) 2) ระดับกลุ่ม (การแลกเปลี่ยนความคิดเห็น การแบ่งปันความรู้ การเรียนรู้ร่วมกันเป็นทีม และการสร้างวิสัยทัศน์ร่วม) และ 3) ระดับองค์การ (การเรียนรู้อย่างต่อเนื่อง การยึดคนเป็นศูนย์กลาง การสร้างสรรค์ความรู้ใหม่ การเรียนรู้จากประสบการณ์ และการคาดการณ์ล่วงหน้า) โดยเทศบาลแต่ละแห่งจะมีคุณลักษณะประการสำคัญที่โดดเด่นในระดับต่างๆที่แตกต่างกัน 2. ปัจจัยที่มีอิทธิพลต่อการเป็นองค์การแห่งการเรียนรู้ของเทศบาล ประกอบด้วย 1) ปัจจัยภายนอก ได้แก่ การเมือง กฎหมาย เศรษฐกิจ สังคมวัฒนธรรม เทคโนโลยี ทรัพยากรธรรมชาติ และประชาชนในท้องถิ่น และ 2) ปัจจัยด้านองค์การ ได้แก่ ผู้นำ ยุทธศาสตร์ขององค์การ โครงสร้างองค์การ ทัศนคติและพฤติกรรมของบุคลากร การพัฒนาทรัพยากรมนุษย์ การสื่อสารภายในองค์การ บรรยากาศในองค์การ การนำเอาเทคโนโลยีมาใช้ในหน่วยงาน และการจัดการความรู้ โดยเทศบาลแต่ละแห่งจะมีอันดับการรับรู้ปัจจัยที่มีอิทธิพลต่อการเป็นองค์การแห่งการเรียนรู้ที่แตกต่างกัน

แนวโน้มในการท่องเที่ยวซ้ำ และความตั้งใจที่จะชักชวนผู้อื่นให้มาท่องเที่ยว: กรณีศึกษาจังหวัดน่าน, จิรภัทร สุคันธมาลา

การท่องเที่ยวของจังหวัดน่านเกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงไปในทางบวกอย่างมากในปัจจุบัน โดยจำนวนนักท่องเที่ยวชาวไทยมีอัตราการเปลี่ยนแปลงเฉลี่ยระหว่างปี 2552-2560 สูงเป็นอันดับ 3 ของ 9 จังหวัดภาคเหนือ นอกจากนี้ จังหวัดน่านยังถูกเลือกให้เป็น 1 ใน 12 เมืองต้องห้ามพลาด โดยการท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย จากศักยภาพของจังหวัดน่านข้างต้นนี้ จึงนำมาสู่วัตถุประสงค์หลักในการวิจัยที่ต้องการวิเคราะห์ปัจจัยที่มีผลกระทบต่อแนวโน้มในการกลับมาท่องเที่ยวซ้ำ และความตั้งใจในการชักชวนผู้อื่นให้มาท่องเที่ยว โดยการใช้แบบจำลองอรรถประโยชน์ ที่มีตัวแปรอิสระเป็นปัจจัยด้านความพึงพอใจ ปัจจัยเชิงพฤติกรรมการท่องเที่ยวในอดีต และคุณลักษณะส่วนตัวของนักท่องเที่ยว ขณะที่ตัวแปรตามคือแนวโน้มในการท่องเที่ยวซ้ำ และความตั้งใจที่จะชักชวนผู้อื่นให้มาท่องเที่ยว โดยใช้ข้อมูลปฐมภูมิจากการเก็บแบบสอบถาม ซึ่งมีกลุ่มตัวอย่างนักท่องเที่ยวทั้งหมด 302 คน ผลการศึกษาที่ได้ พบว่า ปัจจัยด้านความพึงพอใจในแหล่งท่องเที่ยวส่งผลอย่างมีนัยสำคัญต่อแนวโน้มในการท่องเที่ยวซ้ำ และความตั้งใจที่จะชักชวนผู้อื่นให้มาท่องเที่ยว ขณะเดียวกัน ความพึงพอใจในปัจจัยด้านที่พักส่งผลเชิงบวกอย่างมีนัยสำคัญต่อแนวโน้มในการท่องเที่ยวซ้ำ อีกทั้ง ความพึงพอใจในสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกของการท่องเที่ยวยังส่งผลเชิงบวกอย่างมีนัยสำคัญต่อความตั้งใจที่จะชักชวนผู้อื่นให้มาท่องเที่ยว นอกจากนี้ นักท่องเที่ยวที่มีพฤติกรรมชอบท่องเที่ยวภูเขาในอดีต มีความตั้งใจที่จะชักชวนผู้อื่นให้มาท่องเที่ยวลดลงอย่างมีนัยสำคัญ ในทางตรงกันข้าม นักท่องเที่ยวที่พิจารณาอุณหภูมิของสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวก่อนเดินทางอยู่บ่อยครั้ง มีความตั้งใจที่จะชักชวนผู้อื่นให้มาท่องเที่ยวเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างมีนัยสำคัญ

ข้อมูลข่าวสารที่เกิดขึ้นสามารถที่จะส่งผลได้หลากหลายรูปแบบต่อตลาดการเงินในแต่ละช่วงเวลาที่เปลี่ยนแปลงและผลกระทบสามารถวัดได้ด้วยความถี่ ซึ่งก็คือรอบวัฏจักรของข้อมูล สำหรับในการวิจัยนี้ จะใช้การวิเคราะห์สเปกตรัมในการวิเคราะห์ผลตอบแทนที่เกิดขึ้นในแต่ละภาคธุรกิจในช่วงเวลาที่ต่างกัน โดยการใช้ Discrete-Time Fourier Transform ด้วยวิธีการนี้ ทำให้สามารถวิเคราะห์ค่าผลตอบแทน ค่าความเสี่ยง ค่าความแปรปรวนร่วมและผลตอบแทนคาดหวังในกรอบอ้างอิงของความถี่ได้ ซึ่งในกรอบของความถี่ เราสามารถเห็นความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างแผนการลงทุนที่ใช้กับผลตอบแทนของสินทรัพย์ในแต่ละช่วงเวลาได้ สำหรับพอร์ตการลงทุน เราสามารถที่จะสร้างพอร์ตโดยใช้ mean-variance-frequency optimal portfolios และแบ่งช่วงความถี่ของผลตอบแทนที่เราสนใจ ซึ่งในวิธีการ mean-variance optimal portfolios แบบดั้งเดิมไม่สามารถแยกช่วงความถี่ออกมาพิจารณาได้ โดยที่ประสิทธิภาพของพอร์ตการลงทุนจะขึ้นอยู่กับช่วงความถี่ที่เลือกใช้ จำนวนข้อมูลที่ใช้ในการประมาณค่าน้ำหนักการลงทุน และช่วงระยะเวลาที่ใช้ในการปรับน้ำหนักของพอร์ตการลงทุน

ธรรมาภิบาล ค่าตอบแทนและผลการดำเนินงานของบริษัทกรณีศึกษาจากประเทศไทย, มนสิช ภัทรสมสกุล

งานวิจัยฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างองค์ประกอบด้านธรรมาภิบาลของคณะกรรมการบริษัทกับผลการดำเนินงานของบริษัทที่จดทะเบียนในตลาดหลักทรัพย์แห่งประเทศไทย โดยมีสมมติฐานว่าคณะกรรมการของบริษัทเป็นโครงสร้างภายในที่มีส่วนสำคัญในการกำกับดูแลฝ่ายบริหาร ซึ่งเป็นการลดต้นทุนตัวแทน (Agency Cost) และยังทำให้ผลการดำเนินงานของบริษัทดีขึ้น โดยงานวิจัยนี้ศึกษาบริษัทที่เป็นธุรกิจครอบครัว (Family Firm) และไม่เป็นธุรกิจครอบครัว (Non-Family Firm) ที่จดทะเบียนในตลาดหลักทรัพย์แห่งประเทศไทย (SET) ที่ไม่ใช่ธุรกิจการเงิน ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2555 ถึง 2560 ทั้งหมด 200 บริษัท โดยใช้การวิเคราะห์ถดถอยด้วยวิธี Fixed Effect Model และ Random Effect Model ผลการศึกษาพบว่าความเป็นอิสระของคณะกรรมการส่งผลต่อการดำเนินงานของบริษัทอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ โดยกรรมการอิสระมีส่วนสำคัญอย่างยิ่งในการกำกับดูแลการบริหารงานของฝ่ายบริหาร ในขณะที่การดำรงตำแหน่งกรรมการในบริษัทอื่นส่งผลเกิดภาระงานที่มากเกินไปของคณะกรรมการ ซึ่งส่งผลเสียต่อผลการดำเนินงานของบริษัท และค่าตอบแทนของกรรมการมีส่วนช่วยให้เกิดประสิทธิภาพในการกำกับดูแลบริษัทให้มีผลการดำเนินงานที่ดีขึ้น โดยผลการวิจัยนี้จะเป็นประโยชน์ต่อผู้ที่เกี่ยวข้องในตลาดทุนและหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการกำกับดูแล เพื่อยกระดับธรรมาภิบาลในประเทศ ก่อให้เกิดการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืน

ท่ามกลางสภาพเศรษฐกิจและสังคมที่เปลี่ยนไปเข้าสู่ระบบทุนนิยม ความเหงากำลังเป็นภัยคุกคามผู้คนในปัจจุบัน งานศึกษาชิ้นนี้จึงมุ่งศึกษาบทบาทของทุนนิยมที่มีต่อความเหงาของกลุ่มคนเจนเนอเรชั่นวาย (Generation Y) หรือเกิดระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2524 – 2540 ที่อาศัยอยู่ในกรุงเทพมหานครและปริมณฑล ซึ่งเป็นกลุ่มคนที่ก้าวเข้าสู่สังคมทุนนิยมอย่างเต็มตัว วิธีการศึกษาที่ใช้ประกอบด้วย การศึกษาในเชิงปริมาณผ่านการใช้มาตรวัดความเหงา UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3 ซึ่งวัดความเหงามิติความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างบุคคล เพื่อให้เห็นภาพความเหงามิติความสัมพันธ์ในภาพรวม และใช้การศึกษาในเชิงคุณภาพแบบวิธีปรากฎการณ์วิทยา ผ่านการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก โดยข้อมูลทั้งหมดวิเคราะห์ภายใต้กรอบแนวคิดวิพากษ์สังคมทุนนิยม และแนวคิดจิตวิทยาทางสังคมมาร์กซิสต์ของอีริค ฟรอมม์ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า คนเจนเนอเรชั่นวายในสังคมทุนนิยมเผชิญความเหงามิติความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างบุคคลในระดับสูง ซึ่งเมื่อวิเคราะห์ภายใต้สังคมทุนนิยมเกิดขึ้นมาจากความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างแรงงานที่เข้ามามีปฏิสัมพันธ์เพื่อผลประโยชน์ทางเศรษฐกิจ และมีค่านิยมปัจเจก มุ่งเน้นการแข่งขัน ที่ทำให้ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างบุคคลลดลง ขณะที่ เมื่อพิจารณาถึงมิติตัวแปรต่างๆ ภายใต้ทุนนิยมพบว่า มิติถิ่นกำเนิด และมิติทางด้านรายได้ เป็นมิติที่มีนัยยะต่อความเหงามิติความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างบุคคลมากที่สุด โดยระดับรายได้แปรผกผันต่อระดับความเหงา กล่าวคือ ยิ่งระดับรายได้ต่ำ ระดับความเหงายิ่งสูง นอกจากนี้แล้ว ยังพบด้วยว่า ทุนนิยมทำให้เกิดความเหงามิติการดำรงอยู่ หรือความรู้สึกที่ไม่มีบทบาทสำหรับตนเอง หรือความรู้สึกไร้ความหมายในชีวิตอีกด้วย

การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อวิเคราะห์ผลกระทบของการเคลื่อนย้ายประชากรระหว่างประเทศต่อการพัฒนาสาธารณสุขชายแดน และศึกษาปฏิสัมพันธ์ของกลุ่มต่างๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับประเด็นสาธารณสุข ณ พื้นที่เขตพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจพิเศษแม่สอด ผ่านการใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพโดยเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลจากการวิจัยเอกสารที่เกี่ยวข้องและสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกกลุ่มเป้าหมาย เพื่อนำข้อมูลมาวิเคราะห์ประเด็นด้านสาธารณสุขชายแดนอันได้รับอิทธิพลหรือผลกระทบจากการรวมกลุ่มทางเศรษฐกิจของไทยกับประเทศในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้และการพัฒนาพื้นที่ชายแดนเป็นเขตพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจพิเศษภายใต้กรอบแนวคิด/ทฤษฎีเสรีนิยมใหม่ (Neo - Liberal) และการเคลื่อนย้ายประชากรระหว่างประเทศ จากการศึกษาพบว่า การเติบโตของพื้นที่เศรษฐกิจชายแดนมีความต่อเนื่อง การเคลื่อนย้ายประชากรระหว่างประเทศภายใต้แนวคิดเสรีนิยมใหม่มีความยืดหยุ่นมากขึ้น ทำให้มีประชากรแฝงซึ่งเป็นคนข้ามชาติอยู่ในพื้นที่เป็นจำนวนมาก อันส่งผลกระทบต่องานบริการด้านสาธารสุขชายแดนทั้งจำนวนหน่วยบริการสาธารณสุขและบุคลากรไม่เพียงพอต่อจำนวนประชากรที่เพิ่มขึ้น โอกาสการเกิดและแพร่กระจายโรคมีสูงขึ้น ปัญหาด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมซึ่งเจ้าหน้าที่สาธารณสุขต้องเข้าไปดูแลมีเพิ่มมากขึ้น ไม่เพียงเท่านั้นหน่วยบริการสาธารณสุขของภาครัฐในพื้นที่ประสบกับปัญหาค่าใช้จ่ายที่ไม่อาจเรียกเก็บได้จากคนข้ามชาติที่เข้ามารักษา แม้ว่าจะมีแม่ตาวคลินิกช่วยแบ่งเบาภาระในการรักษาคนข้ามชาติที่มีรายได้น้อยแล้วก็ตาม ถือเป็นปฏิสัมพันธ์ในแง่ของความร่วมมือระหว่างภาครัฐและมูลนิธิหรือองค์กรพัฒนาเอกชนในการให้บริการผู้มีรายได้น้อยตลอดจนการป้องกันโรคติดต่อข้ามแดน ส่วนผู้มีรายได้สูงเลือกที่จะใช้บริการโรงพยาบาลเอกชนซึ่งมีความสะดวกสบายคล่องตัวมากกว่าแทน จากสภาพการณ์ที่มีคนข้ามชาติเข้ามารักษา ณ โรงพยาบาลของภาครัฐ จึงทำให้ผู้ป่วยที่เป็นคนไทยมีความอดทนมากขึ้นจากสภาพการณ์ของการรักษาพยาบาลที่แออัดเพราะตระหนักถึงผลประโยชน์ที่ได้รับร่วมกัน

จุดประสงค์หลักของวิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้คือการแสวงหาคำอธิบายว่าอะไรคือบทบาท ผลกระทบ และความสำคัญของการเคลื่อนไหวของนักกิจกรรมนักศึกษาในช่วงเวลา พ.ศ. 2556-2562 และศึกษาถึงความเปลี่ยนแปลงของความคิดทางการเมืองของนักกิจกรรมนักศึกษา รวมไปถึงแสวงหาคำตอบว่าปัจจัยใดบ้างที่ส่งผลต่อปรากฏการณ์ที่นักกิจกรรมนักศึกษาที่เคยเคลื่อนไหวทางการเมือง ได้เปลี่ยนบทบาทของตนจากนักกิจกรรมนักศึกษามาเป็นนักการเมือง ผลการวิจัยพบว่า นักกิจกรรมนักศึกษานั้นมีบทบาทสำคัญในการก่อร่าง "การตอบโต้ในสาธารณะ"อันเป็นพื้นที่คู่ขนานที่เปิดโอกาสให้กับกลุ่มคนที่ถูกกดขี่ ที่เป็นชนชั้นรอง หรือเป็นคนส่วนน้อยในสังคม ซึ่งในที่นี้หมายถึงกลุ่มคนที่ต่อสู้เรียกร้องประชาธิปไตยภายใต้รัฐบาลเผด็จการ โดยทำให้พวกเขาได้เข้ามาร่วมกันสร้าง แลกเปลี่ยน เสนอ หรือส่งต่อ วาทกรรมเพื่อตอบโต้หรือค่านิยมทางเลือกให้แก่สาธารณะ งานวิจัยฉบับนี้ยังพบว่านักกิจกรรมนักศึกษาเหล่านี้ภูมิหลังที่แตกต่างกัน ส่งผลให้มีความแตกต่างกันในด้านทิศทางของการก่อร่างความคิดทางการเมือง อย่างไรก็ตาม พวกเขาก็เคลื่อนไหวทางการเมืองร่วมกันในท้ายที่สุด เนื่องจากมีความคล้ายคลึงกันในด้านมุมมองทางการเมือง งานวิจัยฉบับนี้ยังพบว่าโครงสร้างโอกาสทางการเมืองที่เปิดขึ้นในช่วงก่อนการเลือกตั้งทั่วไปในปี พ.ศ. 2562และความพร้อมของนักกิจกรรมนักศึกษาในทางการเมือง เป็นปัจจัยสำคัญที่ส่งผลต่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงบทบาทของพวกเขา จากนักกิจกรรมนักศึกษาสู่การเป็นนักการเมือง

In this chapter, we (a) demonstrate the relevance of evolutionary theory to criminology, (b) discuss the evolutionary origins of both prosocial and antisocial traits, and (c) show that evolutionary theory is invaluable to understanding two key issues that have been impervious to solution using the standard social science model—the sex ratio in criminal offending and the age-crime curve.

Achieving state wildlife agency biological goals for deer (Odocoileus spp.) management may often conflict with hunter desires. Concomitantly, better information is needed to optimize agency deer herd management goals with hunters’ social goals. In 2016, we surveyed 3,000 North Dakota, USA, resident deer hunters using a self-administered mail survey to gain a better understanding of motivations, satisfaction, and hunter demographics that may be used to inform hunter recruitment and retention (HRR) efforts during a period of reduced statewide deer populations. Using examples encountered from our multi-year study of students encountered in Mexican schools with prior experience in US schools, we look at transnationally-tied families’ decision-making regarding where to send their children to school and ask whether parents should ‘parent from afar’. We don’t pose that as a question about ideals— what would be best if parents had economic security and unambiguous legal residential status— but rather as a more pragmatic one. Given some parents’ and children’s limited agency in real- world circumstances, what is their best path forward?

ABSTRACT

The present study was designed to determine the concurrent validity of the Missouri Ability Scale (MAS), a new measure of independent functioning and learning currently in development. The MAS consists of 10 subtests and is designed to be administered to the examinee and an informant. Fifty individuals (M = 13.1 years; SD = 5.8 years) were administered the MAS and a cognitive abilities test (i.e. WISC-V, KABC-II, WJ-IV). Overall, the Spearman correlations between the MAS learning component and the measures of intellectual ability were moderate-to-strong, indicating good validity. Archaeological and historical literature neglects music and sound. The quantity and distribution of musical remains found during archaeological excavations at Coalwood, a Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company (CCI) logging camp active from 1901-1912 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, addresses the importance of music to the people that lived there. Musical reed plates from harmonicas, concertinas, and accordions were recovered and examined. These musical remains have traditionally been ignored as a diagnostic artifact, but here, I use them as primary evidence to access the daily lives of people in the northern woods. This dissertation examines the extractive landscape and persistent lifespan of native mass copper mining in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The historic native copper mining industry of Michigan lasted for over a century, though its impacts on the landscape can be broken into two distinct, though overlapping, phases of extractive practice: mass mining and disseminated lode mining. Each mined specific native copper deposits, utilized related but specialized technologies, and relied upon different sources of energy to power its practices. The Mental Health First Aid First Nations course was adapted from Mental Health First Aid Basic to create a community-based, culturally safe and relevant approach to promoting mental health literacy in First Nations contexts. Over 2.5 days, the course aims to build community capacity by teaching individuals to recognize and respond to mental health crises. This feasibility study utilized mixed methods to evaluate the acceptability, cultural adaptation, and preliminary effectiveness. Two studies investigated how cultural context and familiarity impact lexical access in Korean-English bilingual and English monolingual adults. ERPs were recorded while participants decided whether a word and picture matched or not. Pictures depicted versions of objects that were prototypically associated with North American or Korean culture and named in either English or Korean, creating culturally congruent and incongruent trials. For bilinguals, culturally congruent trials facilitated responding but ERP results showed that images from both cultures were processed similarly. For monolinguals, culturally incongruent pairs produced longer RTs and larger N400s than congruent items, indicating more effortful processing. Thus, an unfamiliar …

Sexual minority women (SMW) demonstrate lower rates of cervical cancer screening than heterosexual women. This is concerning as lesbian and bisexual women tend to engage in higher rates of substance-related cancer risk behaviors, unprotected sex, and tend to have higher body mass indices, all of which are risk factors for cancer development. Another major risk factor, screening avoidance, places SMW at increased risk for the development of high grade cervical lesions in the absence of early detection practices, which is likely to impact overall cervical cancer morbidity in this population. Objective: To determine which website characteristics are preferred by orthodontists, adult patients, and parents of patients.

Materials and Methods: 1,000 active members of the American Association of Orthodontists and 750 active orthodontic patients/parents were sampled. Participants rated the importance of website characteristics, indicated presence of those characteristics on the current website, and ranked sample website images. Preferences were compared between orthodontist and the patient/parent group using t-tests and sample websites were compared using ANOVA models and Tukey’s adjusted post-hoc tests. Significance level was set at 0.05.

We examine whether ambiguity in the market leads to an increase in information demand by individual investors. Drawing on the asset-pricing model proposed by Mele and Sangiorgi (2015), which incorporates market ambiguity, we measure individual information demand using daily Google searches and measure market ambiguity using a metric based on the market trades of institutional investors. We find that individual investors increase their information demand during periods of greater market ambiguity. We also provide evidence that information demand from individual investors spikes around earnings announcement days primarily when market uncertainty is driven by net-selling activity. This work explores the effects of the implementation of a KWL reflective learning exercise on first-year engineering students’ self-efficacy, intelligence beliefs (mindset), and epistemological beliefs. A sample of 428 first-year engineering students were divided into three groups: a) control, b) exposure to KWL, and c) used KWL. Significant differences were found in self-efficacy between the groups with more efficacious students being less likely to utilize the KWL activity. Seventy-seven percent of the students who used the KWL activities reported positive learning outcomes by using the KWL activity to focus their class preparation or to reflect on their learning.
