Objective –This study asked whether pre-nursing students who took the Nursing 102 (Introduction to Professional Nursing) class, which included information literacy instruction by the Health Sciences Librarian and writing assistance using peer tutors, felt better prepared in basic research skills and a more global understanding of nursing than they did before they took the class. Methods – In Nursing 102, instruction in the skills needed to prepare an APA paper and group presentations on an assigned country were used to increase pre-nursing students’ self-efficacy in basic computer and library skills and global health awareness. As international courts gain in influence, many worry that they will impoverish domestic politics— that they will limit democratic deliberation, undermine domestic institutions, or even thwart crucial political initiatives such as efforts to make peace. Indeed, many states are in the midst of withdrawing, or actively considering withdrawal, from international commitments presided over by international courts. The Article focuses on the currently unfolding Colombian peace process, the first to be negotiated under the watch of not one but two international courts, to show that these concerns misconstrue the way international courts actually work.

Many scholars argue that people who attribute human characteristics to genetic causes also tend to hold politically and socially problematic attitudes. More specifically, public acceptance of genetic influences is believed to be associated with intolerance, prejudice, and the legitimation of social inequities and laissez-faire policies. We test these expectations with original data from two nationally representative samples that allow us to identify the American public’s attributional patterns across 18 diverse traits. Key findings are (1) genetic attributions are actually more likely to be made by liberals, not conservatives; (2) genetic attributions are associated with higher, not lower, levels of tolerance …

As an area of study, the intersection between leadership and sexuality has not been adequately addressed, despite the importance of sexual issues influencing leadership processes. To address this limitation, this chapter introduces three distinct ways in which to understand sexuality and leadership. One way is in terms of sexual leaders, i.e., individuals or organizations that put forward new ideas about how people should embrace their sexuality. We conceptualize social dancing as a form of non-verbal communication geared toward creating the coordinated movement of two people done in time, and over time, to musical accompaniment. This chapter focuses on a type of dancing, social dancing, where ordinary people get together to express themselves at the local dance studio. Unlike what transpires in Singin’ in the Rain and Dancing with the Stars, social dancing is not planned out in advance and participants’ skill level can range from a first-time beginner to a seasoned 30-year veteran. The purpose of this chapter is to offer an analysis of the many reasons why Arthur
Ashe is one of Richmond’s greatest heroes. One definition of heroism, focusing on
the phenomenon’s subjective nature, is that “heroism is in the eye of the beholder”
(Allison & Goethals, 2011), an idea that recognizes that people have their own intuitive
beliefs about what comprises a hero. This chapter offers insights from this subjective perspective, focusing on Arthur Ashe’s courage, dignity, grace, and class.

We provide the first estimates of the potential impact of climate change on cognitive performance and attainment, focusing on the impacts from both short-run weather and long-run climate. Exploiting the longitudinal structure of the NLSY79 and random fluctuations in weather across interviews, we identify the effect of temperature in models with child-specific fixed effects. We find that short-run changes in temperature lead to statistically significant decreases in cognitive performance on math (but not reading) beyond 26C (78.8F). In contrast, our long-run analysis, which relies upon long-difference and rich cross-sectional models, reveals an imprecisely estimated effect that is significantly smaller than …

examines what kind of hero he was, and addresses how his heroic action

using Christopher Vogler’s (2007) twelve step model, based on Joseph

This paper considers the problem of partitioning an individual GPS
trajectory data into homogeneous, meaningful segments such as
stops and trips. Signal loss and signal noise are highly prevalent in
human trajectory data, and it is challenging to deal with uncertainties
in segmentation algorithms. We propose a new trajectory
segmentation algorithm that detects stop segments in a noiserobust
manner from GPS data with time gaps. The algorithm consists
of three steps that impute time gaps, split data into base
segments and estimate states over a base segment. The statedependent

The practice of pipe smoking was commonplace among indigenous cultures of the Eastern Woodlands of North

The development of a traditional form of Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) in the Dagupan City Estuary system in the Philippines is based upon different producers each focusing on individual species rather than individual producers producing multiple species with very different market values. The long-term success of such a system requires attention to local marine spatial planning and enforcement of caps on forms of feed-based (net pen or fish cage) aquaculture systems.
