Saving A University On The Brink: The Heroism Of E. Claiborne And Lora Robins, Lauren J. Weingarten

This article describes the heroic efforts of E. Claiborne and Lora Robins in saving the University of Richmond from the brink of bankruptcy. These two heroes' personal transformations will in part be explained by drawing upon
Allison and Goethals’ (2011) great eight traits of a hero, as well as the need for
a hero to discover his or her missing inner quality. Just how the Robins transformed
the community at the University of Richmond will then be discussed,
taking into account their family’s more recent history of generosity and the
Robins’ image as role models.

The Evolution Of Requirements Practices In Software Startups, Catarina Gralha, Daniela Damian, Anthony Wasserman, Miguel Goulão, João Araújo

We use Grounded Theory to study the evolution of requirements practices of 16 so ware startups as they grow and introduce new products and services. These startups operate in a dynamic environment, with significant time and market pressure, and rarely have time for systematic requirements analysis. Our theory describes the evolution of practice along six dimensions that emerged as relevant to their requirements activities: requirements artefacts, knowledge management, requirements-related roles, planning, technical debt and product quality. Beyond the relationships among the dimensions, our theory also explains the turning points that drove the evolution along these dimensions. These changes are reactive, …

Attitudes, Prior Interaction, And Petitioner Credibility Predict Support For Considering The Rights Of Robots, Patric Spence, Autumn Edwards, Chad Edwards

The purpose of this study is to determine levels of support for consideration of the rights of robots and to identify predictors of support for robot rights. Findings demonstrated that negative attitudes toward robots, perceived credibility of the petitioner, and prior interaction with robots were significant predictors of individuals agreeing to sign a petition on the issue of robot rights. Gender of the participant and whether the petitioner was a human being or Pepper robot did not significantly predict willingness to sign the petition.

Using a mixed method approach we conducted a study consisting of written surveys, focus groups, and individual interviews with 58 men and women who were seeking employment through the Malibu Community Labor Exchange (MCLE) at the time of the study and were predominantly Hispanic immigrants. A central aim of this study is to develop an understanding of how Spanish-speaking Hispanic immigrant day laborers have fared financially in the aftermath of the economic crisis of 2007-2008. We find in our study that weak labor market conditions and intersecting inequities have led to job insecurity, job scarcity, and wage stagnation among workers …

This paper uses experiences from a decade-long community-based research project in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, a Mexican-American neighborhood whose residents are both experiencing and resisting gentrification, to show how displacements and contestations evolve in conversation with each other in an iterative process we could call “actually existing” gentrifications. I analyze a series of “moments” in 13 years of research in Pilsen to illustrate the constantly shifting terrain of gentrification politics, covering not just housing affordability, but the nature of identity, democracy, and belonging. Despite an extensive literature on the normative implications of different international tax regimes and an empirical literature addressing individual specific predictions, there exists little evidence encompassing the broad range of effects of taxing corporations' foreign-source income on a worldwide or territorial basis. This paper takes a more comprehensive quantitative approach by examining stock market reactions surrounding four events over the course of which Japan's 2009 adoption of a dividend exemption system was developed into proposed law. Using an event study methodology which leverages individual firm characteristics and accounts for contemporaneous financial market developments, we find that Japanese firms with less …

We assess the performance of three hospital merger simulation methods by means of a Monte Carlo experiment. We fi#12;rst specify a rich theoretical model of hospital markets and use it to generate "true" price eff#11;ects of a large number of hospital mergers. We then use the theoretical model to generate the data that would be available in a real-world prospective merger analysis and apply the merger simulation methods to those data. Finally, we compare the predictions of the merger simulation methods to the true price eff#11;ects. While there is some heterogeneity in performance, all three simulation methods perform reasonably well.

Imperfect Synthetic Controls: Did The Massachusetts Health Care Reform Save Lives?, David Powell

In 2006, Massachusetts enacted comprehensive health care reform which served as a model for the Affordable Care Act. I study the mortality effects of the reform using synthetic control estimation, relaxing two critical assumptions required to implement this method.  The traditional approach assumes the existence of a perfect synthetic control, which cannot exist if the outcomes of the treated unit are outside of the "convex hull" or functions of transitory shocks.  I propose simple modifications to relax these restrictions.  The new estimator outperforms the traditional method in simulations.   I estimate that the Massachusetts Health Care Reform reduced mortality by 3%.
