Gone With The Wind: The Evolving Influence Of Social Movements And Counter Movements On Entrepreneurial Activity In The U.S. Wind Industry, Chad Carlos, Wesley Sine, Brandon Lee, Heather Haveman
Brandon Lee
Social movements can disrupt existing industries and inspire the emergence of new markets by drawing attention to problems with the status quo and promoting alternatives. We examine how the influence of social movements on entrepreneurial activity evolves as the markets they foster mature. Theoretically, we argue that the success of social movements in furthering market expansion leads to three related outcomes. First, the movement-encouraged development of market infrastructure reduces the need for continued social movement support. Second, social movements’ efforts on behalf of new markets increase the importance of resource availability for market entry. Third, market growth motivates countermovements that …

Collective Action And Market Formation: An Integrative Framework, Brandon Lee, Jeroen Struben, Christopher B. Bingham
Brandon Lee
While extant research places collective action at the heart of market formation, it provides little understanding about when and to what extent collective action is important. In this paper, we develop a novel theoretical framework detailing what collective action problems and solutions arise in market formation and under what conditions. Our framework centers on the development of market infrastructure with three key factors that influence the nature and extent of collective action problems: perceived returns to contributions, excludability, and contribution substitutability. We apply our framework to diverse market formation contexts and derive a fresh set of attendant propositions. Finally, we …

In recent decades, China has transformed from a relatively egalitarian society to a highly unequal one. What are the implications of high levels of inequality for the lives of children? Drawing on two newly available, nationally representative datasets, the China Family Panel Studies and the China Education Panel Survey, we develop a comprehensive portrait of childhood inequality in post-reform China. Analyses reveal stark disparities between children from different socioeconomic backgrounds in family environments and in welfare outcomes, including physical health, psychosocial health, and educational performance. We argue that childhood inequality in China is driven not only by the deprivations of …

Gender Policy Feedback: Perceptions Of Sex Equity, Title Ix, And Political Mobilization Among College Athletes, James Druckman, Jacob Rothschild, Elizabeth Sharrow
Elizabeth Sharrow
Public policies invariably confer or deny benefits to particular citizens. How citizens respond to relevant policies has fundamental implications for democratic responsiveness. The researchers study the beliefs of a core constituency of one of the most celebrated sex non-discrimination policies in United States history: Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Using a novel survey of college student-athletes, they find strong support for the spirit of the policy, with the vast majority of respondents reporting the opinion that there “should” be equity. Yet, studentathletes also perceive mal-distribution among status quo resources and opportunities, and believe that redistribution is needed. …

Time Series Copulas For Heteroskedastic Data, Ruben Loaiza-Maya, Michael S. Smith, Worapree Maneesoonthorn
Michael Stanley Smith
We propose parametric copulas that capture serial dependence in stationary heteroskedastic time series. We suggest copulas for first-order Markov series, and then extend them to higher orders and multivariate series. We derive the copula of a volatility proxy, based on which we propose new measures of volatility dependence, including co-movement and spillover in multivariate series. In general, these depend upon the marginal distributions of the series. Using exchange rate returns, we show that the resulting copula models can capture
their marginal distributions more accurately than univariate and multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity models, and produce more accurate value-at-risk forecasts.

Liquidity Policies And Financial Fragility, Danilo Lopomo Beteto Wegner
Danilo Lopomo Beteto Wegner
This paper proposes an endogenous model of the formation of financial networks, where government and central bank policies that aim at enhancing market liquidity play a key role. Under these policies, large and less liquid investments become more profitable, but to finance them banks need to resort to the interbank market. This makes the structure of the financial network - and its associated exposure to shocks, i.e., fragility - to be dependent on liquidity policies chosen by the government and central bank. It is shown that, despite increasing the capitalization of the banking system, policies that enhance liquidity can make …

This chapter provides a framework for understanding teachers as heroes, and also to draw attention to impediments of heroism that can create a villainous teacher. By exploring both misunderstanding and misuse of the power of the teacher role, my goal is to offer a cogent analysis of how teachers can commit subtle acts of passive or active evil. I will use examples drawn from both cultural elements of media such as movies and books as well as cases from news stories and blogs of everyday heroic and villainous teachers. Lastly, this chapter will explore historical role that teachers have played …

This paper critically examines the use of predictive analytics in U.S. criminal justice policy and practice, with a particular focus on the ways in which these technological practices are reproducing and reinforcing structural relations of difference. Adopting a new materialist lens, which posits algorithms as more-than-human ontologies, the paper explores the process by which algorithms become racializing assemblages through their encounters with administrative data generated at various stages of criminal justice, and guided by choices made by decision makers and researchers. It addresses the following questions: In what ways do the algorithms become part of a larger sociotechnical apparatus of …

In terrestrial and coastal systems, the mitigation hierarchy is widely and increasingly used to guide actions to ensure that no net loss of biodiversity ensues from development. We develop a conceptual model which applies this approach to the mitigation of marine megafauna by-catch in fisheries, going from defining an overarching goal with an associated quantitative target, through avoidance, minimization, remediation to offsetting. We demonstrate the framework’s utility as a tool for structuring thinking and exposing uncertainties. We draw comparisons between debates ongoing in terrestrial situations and in by- catch mitigation, to show how insights from each could inform the other; …

Climate variability and change are issues of growing public health importance. Numerous studies have documented risks of extreme heat on human health in different locations around the world. Strategies to prevent heat-related morbidity and reduce disparities are possible but require improved knowledge of health outcomes during hot days at a small-scale level as important within-city variability in local weather conditions, socio-demographic composition, and access to air conditioning (AC) may exist. We analyzed hospitalization data for three unique climate regions of San Diego County alongside temperature data spanning 14 years to quantify the health impact of ambient air temperature at varying …

In this chapter, we address the epidemiology of homelessness among US Veterans, including a discussion of the methodological challenges relevant to the enumeration and description of homelessness as well as a presentation of current estimates and trends in homelessness among Veterans. The chapter begins with a brief overview of homelessness among Veterans historically, with the remainder of the chapter focusing on the prevalence and incidence of homelessness among Veterans over the past decade. The methodological considerations discussed in this chapter include issues surrounding conceptual definitions of homelessness, implications related to the time frame used for estimates, a comparison between point …

This week for my observation, I focused on feeling the elements more. Last week in NYC it was sweltering. It was 41 Celsius and this week it has fallen to 16 Celsius. When it was hot outside, I tried to embrace the warmth and humidity and tell my mind that its a gift the whole Psychology of the brain. When the weather change happened, it was so stark and I love the fall when you can feel the change. It was rainy, windy, and chilly. The air became more crisp and it was nice to feel. I am generally more …

The Dark Side Of Creative Tourism: A Philosophical Dialogue With Culture, Babu P. George
Babu George
This manuscript interrogates the epistemological limitations of creative tourism, which is framed technically within “cultural tourism”. Discussing the old prejudices and paternalist discourses of colonialism, where “science” developed an uncanny sentiment of protection and submission for aboriginals, “cultural tourism” emulates old forms of domination, in a context of extremes and economic crisis. If creativity only works in contexts of scarcity, it would be interesting to understand capitalism as a cultural project that shows some problems to understand the “ non-European other” and environmental resources.

Faculty Support For Internationalization: The Case Study Of A United States Based Private University, Babu P. George, Marta Almeyda
Babu George
Universities around the world are internationalizing themselves at a higher pace than even seen before. Faculty support is recognized as critical for the success of the internationalization mission. However, faculty motivation and commitment are often taken for granted; administrators direct most of their attention to tackling partnership issues and managing the external environment. This paper unravels certain critical issues associated with faculty support for internationalization in a small private university located in a US jurisdiction area. Data show that absence of an institutional structure for effective organizational communication would result in imperfect information about internationalization being circulated. Also, incentives like …

What Determines Tourist Adoption Of Smartphone Apps? An Analysis Based On The Utaut-2 Framework, Babu P. George
Babu George
Purpose
This study aims to identify factors affecting tourists’ intention of using travel apps installed on their smartphones.
Design/methodology/approach
Survey methodology. A questionnaire was developed largely based on the available scales in the published literature. A total of 389 participants responded to the survey, out of which 343 valid responses were obtained for statistical analysis.
Findings
Significant predictors of smartphone app usage intention included performance expectancy, social influence, price saving, perceived risk, perceived trust, and prior usage habits. Usage behavior was largely mediated by usage intention, except in the case of habits. Contrary to the expectation, factors like hedonistic motivation, …

Perceptions Of Top Management About The Total Rewards Statement: A Case Study In The Retail Sector, Dale J. Albrecht, Babu P. George
Babu George
A total rewards statement (TRS) is a summary of compensation, benefits, and perquisites that an employer provides to their employee. This qualitative case study examines the TRS related perceptions of senior managers of a large retail company headquartered in the US and operates over 3,000 retail locations across the United States and Mexico. In particular, it investigates whether employees have a change in their perceptions of their employers in the light of TRS adoption. The findings suggest that employees react to TRS in a manner that broadly aligns with the tenets of the social exchange theory and the theory of …

Cross-Cultural Competence As A Basis Of The Competitive Advantage Of The United States In Medical Tourism, Babu P. George
Babu George
This chapter is an attempt to extend the construct of cross cultural competence into the domain of medical tourism. One of the bases of competitive advantage in international medical tourism is cross cultural competence. While medical treatment in the U.S. is inherently expensive, cross cultural competence could act as a compensating lever. The U.S. hospitals employ a racially and ethnically diverse workforce, many of whom are recent migrants from different parts of the world. This makes overseas patients feel “at home” while they are admitted for treatment in the US hospitals. The authors provide a theoretical basis for further development …

Understanding Church Growth Through Church Marketing: An Analysis Of The Roman Catholic Church’S Marketing Efforts In Ghana, George Obeng Appah, Babu P. George
Babu George
Dwindling church membership coupled with the pressing need for raising resources have made it essential for churches to understand the laity’s expectations about religious organizations and act upon them. For good or bad, there is an increasing influx of marketing philosophies and principles into the churches’ everyday practices. This paper reviews the extant literature on church marketing and highlights opportunities for market oriented managerial actions for church growth. Challenges in adapting the marketing concept to the promotion of faith and the sale of religious objects are identified. Finally, a brief case study of the marketing activities of the Catholic church …

Going Beyond The Text: Turning Classrooms Into Communities Of Practice To Uncover And Create Noncanonical Knowledge, Darin Freeburg
Darin Freeburg
Every discipline has an existing canon – seen in textbooks, scholarly journals, conference proceedings,
etc. – that explicitly outlines existing practice and thought. Recognizing the inadequacy of these canons,
the current paper outlines an approach to classroom instruction that helps students move beyond these
texts as they create and discover noncanonical knowledge. This noncanonical approach focuses on turning
classrooms into Communities of Practice (CoP). There is myriad literature on the utility of such groups for
knowledge creation and learning in organizations, yet this paper is unique in introducing it to classroom
instruction. By turning classrooms into an adapted CoP, instructors …
