Elsevier, Bepress, And A Glimpse At The Future Of Scholarly Communication, Cris Ferguson

The acquisition of bepress by Elsevier in August 2017, while unpopular among many librarians, provides both companies opportunities for expansion and growth.  This Balance Point column outlines some of the benefits to both companies and the reaction by the library community. Also addressed is the announcement by the Penn Libraries that they are searching for a new open source repository potentially to replace bepress’s Digital Commons.  The column concludes with some discussion of Elsevier’s relationship with open access content and the impact of the acquisition on the scholarly communications infrastructure.

In the 1960s, a Louisville photography studio began donating its negatives, prints, and invoices to the University of Louisville Photographic Archives. The Caufield & Shook Collection remains a significant primary source for local history and a prime candidate for digitization. Unfortunately, on its receipt non-archivists processed the collection with little documentation of original order or organizational decision making. Additionally, workflow choices were determined largely by the desire to maximize student labor. In 2017, the Digital Initiatives Librarian worked with in-house application developers and archives staff to create a workflow that has significantly sped up the process of making this valuable …

As information professionals and future faculty in a knowledge-sharing environment, librarians are expected to concisely and creatively share their ideas, presentations and poster sessions being the most common method of delivery. Poster sessions, in particular, are essential for early career librarians to promote their research and scholarly activities, expand their professional networks, and facilitate engaging discussions about the profession. Unfortunately, library schools rarely teach their students about poster creation (i.e., visual design, writing, and printing) and about how to present at a poster session. Because this process is most often learned through trial and error experiences, new librarians are at a disadvantage when doing poster sessions for the first time.  
 
To help fill in the “poster session knowledge gap,” this session will teach practical strategies to help early career librarians on how to create effective and visually appealing posters, how to approach the abstract writing process, and how …

As publishing models continue to change and evolve, libraries have remained constant in their
pursuit of information access. After nearly three decades, academic institutions are still
adapting to open access publishing. At a medium-size, private institution, a library working
group was formed in order to alleviate rising faculty concerns on predatory OA journals. In
Spring 2015, three librarians formed the Credible Journal Criteria Working Group (CJCWG) in
response to faculty inquiries on open access (OA) publishing, particularly, how to evaluate OA

A simple Attacker-Defender interaction is analyzed, in which a single terrorist (denoted T) will potentially attack a single target in the homeland of a government/state (denoted G). This interaction is modeled as a one-shot sequential move game in which G #12;first chooses how heavily to defend the target, after which T chooses whether or not to stage an attack. T's bene#12;fit from a successful attack is allowed to be increasing in the amount of resources that G allocates to defense. Motivated by the war in Syria and the ascension of ISIS, this paper models a proxy war with three sponsors and three combatants as a dynamic game. Sponsors are leaders that provide resources for combatants to fi#12;ght each other. Sponsors 1 and 2 have strong aversion to sponsor 3's proxy, but not against each other. Three pure strategy equilibria exist in the game. When the ex post value of winning is small, all players #12;fight in equilibrium. This article examines the role of espionage in defending against cyber-attacks on infrastructural firms. We analyze the problem using a game between a government, an infrastructural firm and an attacker. If the attacker successfully breaches the IT security defenses of the infrastructural firm, primary losses accrue to that firm while widespread collateral losses accrue to the rest of the economy. The government assists the infrastructural firm by providing intelligence inputs about an impending attack. We find that subject to some conditions, expenditure on intelligence adds value only when its amount exceeds a threshold level. Also, the nature of the equilibrium …

Stacked generalization is an ensemble method that allows researchers to combine several different prediction algorithms into one. Since its introduction in the early 1990s, the method has evolved several times into a host of methods among which is the ‘‘Super Learner’’. Super Learner uses V -fold cross-validation to build the optimal weighted combination of predictions from a library of candidate algorithms. Optimality is defined by a user-specified objective function, such as minimizing mean squared error or maximizing the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. The current research uncovers problems with a religious organisation's Intellectual Capital
(IC), and the approaches organisational leaders take to overcome these problems. It is situated as an issue
of complexity, in which there are varying levels in both problem and approach. This is outlined according
to David Snowden's Cyne¯n model. It is suggested that complex IC problems require complex IC
approaches, while simple problems can make use of simple approaches. Two case studies with churches in
the American South were used. Focus groups with these churches identi¯ed IC assets of strategic importance,
