The Knowledge Lens: Equipping Information Professionals To Spark Innovation Within Organizations And Society, Darin Freeburg Dec 2017

The Knowledge Lens: Equipping Information Professionals To Spark Innovation Within Organizations And Society, Darin Freeburg

Darin Freeburg

This article outlines the Knowledge Lens—a way of seeing more clearly the opportunities for knowledge creation within organizations and society. It is proposed as a model for schools of Library and Information Science (LIS) to follow when considering curriculum changes. Instead of producing two sets of graduates—those in information and those in knowledge, each lacking the insight of the other—this model provides a foundation for embedding knowledge throughout the curriculum to equip information professionals with the requisite skills and understanding to lead innovative knowledge work in whatever organization they join. It includes three groupings and six elements. The groupings bring …

Learning From Data: Using Technology To Gain Deeper Meaning From Archives, Emily Mercer Dec 2017

Learning From Data: Using Technology To Gain Deeper Meaning From Archives, Emily Mercer

Emily Mercer

With a proliferation of information in the 21st century, new tools are necessary for deriving
meaning from the information in archival repositories and recordkeeping programs. With
embracing distant learning techniques such as data and text mining, and visualization projects
archivists, records managers, and researchers can learn in a deeper way. Examining archival
tradition and more recent Archives 2.0 initiatives, this essay posits that this meaningful learning
best occurs by embracing new technology. Only then will the ideals of interactivity and
decentralized authority be realized.

Lessons Learned After A Disaster: Investigations Of Public Librarians’ Health Information Services To The Community And Community Members’ Information Needs Following A Catastrophic Flood, Feili Tu-Keefner, Jingjing Liu, Darin Freeburg, Elizabeth J. Hartnett, Denise Lyons, Mike Corbo, April Hobbs

Darin Freeburg

In times of crisis, public libraries, in addition to health, fire, and police departments, are community outreach centers and sources of credible information. In October 2015, several counties in the state of South Carolina in the United States of America experienced catastrophic flooding that caused severe damage. Situation-specific research was conducted to investigate public libraries’ value to theircommunities in providing critical information services, as well as the libraries’ legitimacy as partnersof public health agencies. The research framework is one recommended by public health experts for risk communication preparedness and implementation during pandemic influenza. In 2015, a casestudy investigated 1) public …

The Guided Innovation Model: Messy Human Innovation, Darin Freeburg

Darin Freeburg

This paper outlines the theoretical foundation and framework for the Guided Innovation Model, which puts nonprofit organizations in a position to increase innovation through the application of Knowledge Management tools. This is facilitated by information and knowledge professionals. It also outlines a suggested approach for implementation of the model. The purpose of the paper is to provide an in-depth foundation which future work can build upon in specific contexts. Given the complexity and constancy of social change, nonprofits must continually innovate to meet the needs of their community. This model provides a framework for how they can do this without …

Leadership And Innovation Within A Complex Adaptive System: Public Libraries, Darin Freeburg Dec 2017

Leadership And Innovation Within A Complex Adaptive System: Public Libraries, Darin Freeburg

Darin Freeburg

Viewing public libraries as Complex Adaptive Systems, the current study analyzed leadership within these systems in terms of complexity and innovation. This included a leader’s capacity for ambiguity and emergence, features of leadership in different contexts, and perceptions of success and innovation. From a list of current public library directors and managers, 15 participants completed a 30-minute phone interview that followed a semi-structured guide. By analyzing the intersection of complexity of approach with complexity of context, eight leadership approaches were uncovered through coding. Results suggest that most participants engaged with most of the leadership approaches at some point. In addition, …

The Knowing Model: Encouraging Behavior Change In Organizations Through Awareness, Integration, And Knowing, Darin Freeburg Dec 2017

The Knowing Model: Encouraging Behavior Change In Organizations Through Awareness, Integration, And Knowing, Darin Freeburg

Darin Freeburg

Leadership is often responsible for behavior change in their organizations. This paper outlines a context-based model—utilizing existing theories and models in Knowledge Management and Library and Information Science—to increase leadership’s effectiveness in this area. The Knowing Model approaches behavior change as an issue of information content, dissemination, and use of that information—all within a complex environment with additional social barriers. A behavior—one that an organization has unsuccessfully attempted to change in the pastis identified by leadership. These previous attempts serve as a baseline from which to measure success of the proposed model. The target behavior change is one …

Reimagining Research Services As Part Of Major Academic Library Renovations: A Tale Of Two Research Departments (University Of Central Florida And Florida Gulf Coast University) No Title, Barbara Tierney, Linda Colding Dr.

Barbara Tierney

Two academic library research service managers discuss changes and innovations that they have coordinated in their respective libraries (University of Central Florida serving 60,000+ students http://library.ucf.edu/21st/[1] and Florida Gulf Coast University serving 15,000+ students http://library.fgcu.edu/admin/renewal.html[2]) due to major building renovations or other changes that their respective libraries are conducting.

These changes and innovations include significantly downsizing print reference and other collections, relocating and redefining service points, reconfiguring public services, rethinking staffing models, adjusting subject librarian face-to-face activities, stepping-up online services, communicating with stakeholders, and keeping students and faculty in the loop so that their voices are heard …

The Moorehead Phase Occupation At The Emerald Acropolis, Jacob Skousen Dec 2017

The Moorehead Phase Occupation At The Emerald Acropolis, Jacob Skousen

Jacob Skousen

The Emerald site, also known as the Emerald Acropolis, was an early Mississippian pilgrimage center key to Cahokia's development. This paper presents the hitherto unpublished results of two archaeological projects conducted at the site, one led by Howard Winters and Stuart Struever in 1961 and the other by Robert Hall in 1964. These investigations produced the most comprehensive information on Emerald's Moorehead phase (1200-1300 CE) occupation during which two of its mounds were capped, a secondary mound was constructed on the central mound, and a mound-top structure was erected on this secondary mound. Similar activities took place throughout the region …

Circles Presentation.Pdf, Brandie M. Oliver

Brandie M. Oliver

This presentation will share the results of two pilot studies using Circles. Circles give people an opportunity to speak and listen to one another in an atmosphere of safety and equality. Circles were used to build and strengthen relationships as well as deliver academic content and increase social/emotional learning principles. One pilot study focused on infusing children’s literature into Circle lessons in a 3rd grade classroom and the second pilot study targeted academic motivation and lack of connectedness for high school students in 9th and 11th grade.

Legal Deserts: A Multi-State Perspective On Rural Access To Justice, Lisa R. Pruitt , Amanda L. Kool, Lauren Sudeall Lucas, Michele Statz, Danielle M. Conway, Hannah Haksgaard

Lisa R Pruitt

Rural America faces an increasingly dire access-to-justice crisis, which serves to exacerbate the already disproportionate share of social problems afflicting rural areas. One critical aspect of that crisis is the dearth of information and research regarding the extent of the problem and its impacts. This article begins to fill that gap by providing surveys of rural access to justice in six geographically, demographically, and economically varied states: California, Georgia, Maine, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. In addition to providing insights about the distinct rural challenges confronting each of these states, the legal resources available, and existing policy responses, the article …

Background: HIV RNA is identified in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within eight days of estimated viral exposure. Neurological findings and impaired neuropsychological testing performance are documented in a subset of individuals with acute HIV infection (AHI). The purpose of this study was to determine whether microstructural white matter and resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) are disrupted in AHI.
Methods: We examined 49 AHI (100% male; mean age = 30 ± SD 9.9) and 23 HIV-uninfected Thai participants (78% male; age = 30 ± 5.5) with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and rsFC acquired at 3 Tesla, and four neuropsychological tests (summarized as NPZ-4). …

Psychopathic Traits Linked To Alterations In Neural Activity During Personality Judgments Of Self And Others, Philip Deming, Carissa L. Philippi, Richard C. Wolf, Monika Dargis, Kent A. Kiehl, Michael Koenigs Dec 2017

Psychopathic Traits Linked To Alterations In Neural Activity During Personality Judgments Of Self And Others, Philip Deming, Carissa L. Philippi, Richard C. Wolf, Monika Dargis, Kent A. Kiehl, Michael Koenigs

Carissa Philippi

Psychopathic individuals are notorious for their grandiose sense of self-worth and disregard for the welfare of others. One potential psychological mechanism underlying these traits is the relative consideration of “self” versus “others”. Here we used task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to identify neural responses during personality trait judgments about oneself and a familiar other in a sample of adult male incarcerated offenders (n = 57). Neural activity was regressed on two clusters of psychopathic traits: Factor 1 (e.g., egocentricity and lack of empathy) and Factor 2 (e.g., impulsivity and irresponsibility). Contrary to our hypotheses, Factor 1 scores were not …

Unconditional Love And Evil Stepmothers: How Parents Are Heroes And Villains, Rebecca M. Fischer Dec 2017

Unconditional Love And Evil Stepmothers: How Parents Are Heroes And Villains, Rebecca M. Fischer

Scott T. Allison

In this chapter, I will discuss how parents are biologically driven to protect, care for, and motivate their children to success. These same biological drives may also hurt children, especially in the case of stepparents. Parents face considerable social pressure when deciding how to raise their child. Many parents get trapped in fads and in the idea that there is a perfect way to raise a child – and some ways may indeed do more harm than others. When taking parental fads to the extreme, parents run into the risk of harming their own children. Sometimes parents may abandon their …
