“They’Re Bringing Crime:” White Fear And Closing Borders, Hanna Rosenheimer

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Leading up to the 2016 election, popular rhetoric surrounding immigrants to the United States took a marked turn. This change can be partially explained using Piotr Cap’s proximization theory, a threat-based discursive model that relies on locating threatening events in proximity to the audience in order to justify preventative or protective measures. Quantitative public opinion data from the Chapman University Survey of American Fears suggests that a disbelief in immigrants’ ability to assimilate is strongly correlated with a fear of immigrants committing crimes. White Americans who hold these beliefs typically tend to favor or strongly favor preemptive punitive action against …

Analyzing Gun Control: Nature Or Nurture?, Josie Chan

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The year of 2017 was deemed the deadliest year for mass killings, which explains the growing tension between those who want stronger restrictions compared to those who do not. In October 2017, 59 people were killed, with over 500 people injured in the Las Vegas massacre. When a national tragedy of such magnitude strikes, it immediately stirs up talks of gun control measures. Whether it is the National Rifle Association funneling more money to fight for 2nd Amendment rights or passionate Americans fighting for stronger gun restrictions, the debate regarding government restrictions on firearms and ammunition proves to be …

What do grapes and tomatoes have in common? Both of these foods have been or are major points of contention for influential farm worker movements. The United Farm Workers formed by Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, and Gilbert Padilla in 1962 has become a hallmark of success in labor history. This movement used traditional yet innovative methods of social movement strategy, eventually branding themselves as a household name. The images and paraphernalia such as buttons, bumper stickers, and posters distributed during the Delano Grape Strike seemed like a simple concept at the time, but there were strategic decisions made to incorporate …

In conjunction, two other research studies are examined on the subject of 1) consortium membership and benefits, and 2) whether the use of advertisement on cable television has a direct impact in increasing library consumption.

P300 Event-Related Potentials To A Phoneme Discrimination Task Requiring A Motor Response, Kaitlyn Chelsea Turner

Theses and Dissertations

Speech perception typically takes place within the auditory cortex as evidenced by data collected using quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG). The purpose of this study was to determine if motor responses influence speech perception. We examined P300 event-related potentials during oddball stimulus recognition tasks that either required or did not require a motor response. Based on a review of the literature, it was hypothesized that similar areas of the brain would be activated in both the motor response task and the same task without a motor response immediately following the button-push condition. Two syllables, /ba/ and /ga/, were presented to 20 native …

Older Artists And Acknowledging Ageism, Liz Langdon Dec 2018

Older Artists And Acknowledging Ageism, Liz Langdon

International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education

Intergenerational (IG) learning has the potential to reinforce ageist ideas, through the culturally produced binary of old and young which often describes IG learning. This research with older artists revealed implicit age bias associated with a modernist tradition in art education which minimized the value of art production viewed as feminine. Language associated with ageism shares the descriptors of the feminine and seep into our perceptions. Cooperative action research with multi-age participants facilitated personal growth and through critical reflection, implicit ageism revealed in the researcher’s prior perspective is revealed.

At first, they did not consider their continuing long-distance connection as intergenerational. They shared experiences and exchanged ideas oblivious to the great difference in their ages. But as online tools, research, and communication emerged as a central focus of Jodi’s life and teaching, they became aware that this development might lead to an intergenerational digital divide between them. In order to explore their different responses to what has been called screen culture, they brought back their puppet alter …

The Future Of The Profession(S), Susan S. Raines

The skills and processes of ADR are indeed more broadly dispersed throughout society. Over the past decade, ADR and Conflict Resolution (CR) concepts and skills have been added to the core curricula and continuing education trainings in most fields, from law and medicine to engineering, education, and business management. The term “mediation” is rarely confused with “meditation” as it once was. Increasingly, terms like “mediation”, “arbitration”, and “ombudsman” are used in the media without the need to define them for the general public. Children have learned peer mediation in schools along with the interest-based negotiation model and listening skills. Indeed, …
