Introduction: In this study, we tested a simple, active “ethical consistency” intervention aimed at reducing researchers’ endorsement of questionable research practices (QRPs).

Methods: We developed a simple, active ethical consistency intervention and tested it against a control using an established QRP survey instrument. Before responding to a survey that asked about attitudes towards each of fifteen QRPs, participants were randomly assigned to either a consistency or control 3–5-min writing task. A total of 201 participants completed the survey: 121 participants were recruited from a database of currently funded NSF/NIH scientists, and 80 participants were recruited from a pool …

As noted in Part 1 of this two-part review, school attendance is an important foundational competency for children and adolescents, and school absenteeism has been linked to myriad short- and long-term negative consequences, even into adulthood. Categorical and dimensional approaches for this population have been developed. This article (Part 2 of a two-part review) discusses compatibilities of categorical and dimensional approaches for school attendance and school absenteeism and how these approaches can inform one another. The article also poses a multidimensional multi-tiered system of supports pyramid model as a mechanism for reconciling these approaches, promoting school attendance (and/or prevention of …

Employment And Quality Of Life In Adults Who Are Deaf, Sara Thompson, Susan R. Easterbrooks Nov 2019

Employment And Quality Of Life In Adults Who Are Deaf, Sara Thompson, Susan R. Easterbrooks

JADARA

Research shows that work is closely related to self-esteem (Walter, 1993). Yet many young people who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) are choosing not to work. How does this affect their self-esteem and overall quality of life? Quality of life (QoL) is the satisfaction one feels about his current situation. Using the Comprehensive Quality of Life Scale-Adult (ComQol-A5) (Cummins, 1997), the perceived QoL of eleven pairs of matched participants(N=22) from a State School for the Deaf was measured. Data were used to analyze the impact that employment had upon their perceived QoL. The results indicated no significant differences …

Quality Services For Children And Youth Who Are Deafblind, Marjorie Harrington, Emily Pfohl Nov 2019

Quality Services For Children And Youth Who Are Deafblind, Marjorie Harrington, Emily Pfohl

JADARA

Many deafblind students in the United States are not serviced appropriately in the educational system because there is a lack of qualified teachers available. New York State does not have certification for teaching deafblind students. The Canisius College teacher preparation program in conjunction with the New York State Technical Assistance Project Serving Children and Youth Who Are Deafblind (NYSTAP) task force is trying to alleviate some of this lack of knowledge by providing graduate students in the deaf education teacher preparation program with four workshops on deafblind issues. This paper describes the method used to introduce deafblind curriculum as a …

Deaf And Hearing: Conducting Cross-Cultural Research In A Postsecondary Setting, Steven R. Sligar

JADARA

This paper describes cross-cultural research methods that were used in a case study of a community college in the Midwest. During the course of the research, the importance of applying cross-cultural research methods became apparent. Analysis of the research process resulted in a identification of three aspects of cross-cultural design. These are the cross cultural research guidelines applied to Deafness, the context of the study, and the conduct of the research. The results indicated that when the interests of people who were Deaf were considered, cross-cultural collaboration was possible, there was benefit to the Deaf culture and the mainstream, and …

The Value Of Art Therapy: An Intervention To Enhance Emotional Health Of Children With Hearing Loss, Helen Boyle, Peggy Dunn Snow Nov 2019

The Value Of Art Therapy: An Intervention To Enhance Emotional Health Of Children With Hearing Loss, Helen Boyle, Peggy Dunn Snow

JADARA

Deafness is the invisible, unseen sensory anomaly that is difficult for hearing individuals to understand. Deaf and hard of hearing children look the same as other children and have the same cognitive abilities as hearing children; they ambulate, laugh, cry, and have the same basic needs. Research data supports the fact that when intelligence instruments are used that do not rely on verbal and language processing abilities the results show that there is no difference in performance between hearing and hearing impaired children (Moores 2001; Vemon 1990). There is the same range of intelligence for both groups. However there is …

Counseling Accessibility For Deaf Children In Public And Residential Schools, Alton Brant, Sally Moore

This study identified a number of issues related to student behaviors and/or counseling support children were receiving in South Carolina public schools and residential programs in the southeastern United States (U.S.). The survey distributed to professional counselors revealed a number of significant findings including: 1) Deaf and hard of hearing children are experiencing varying degrees of difficulty functioning in educational programs, and b) a significant number of deaf and hard of hearing children are receiving …
