A Reconsideration Of Library Treatment Of Ethically Questionable Medical Texts: The Case Of The Pernkopf Atlas Of Anatomy, Jamie Saragossi, Kathleen Kasten-Mutkus, Laurel Scheinfeld

The Pernkopf Atlas of Anatomy consists of anatomical drawings created by Austrian physician Eduard Pernkopf, an active member of the Nazi Party during World War II. While the book was known for its highly detailed anatomical drawings, in the 1990s it was determined that Holocaust victims were likely used as subjects for the drawings. Using a survey, the authors aimed to gather information about the presence of this monograph in academic libraries today to provide best practice recommendations for academic libraries in their approach to ethically questionable materials.

Student Misbehavior: The Role Of Student-Teacher Relationships And Supportive Teachers In Reducing Racial Disparities In School Discipline, Ashley Ramsay

How do teachers contribute to the growing racial disparities in school discipline? Previous research indicates that teachers influence students’ academic and social outcomes, but how do they also influence the rates at which different student racial groups get disciplined? This study uses data from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (N = 10051) to examine the relationship between student-teacher relationships, supportive teachers and discipline. I propose the following hypotheses: (1) students who get along well with their teachers will be less likely to be disciplined than students who do not, (2) students who perceive their teachers to be supportive will …

The digital conversion and creation of accessible records from the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament (SBS) Oral History Collection includes recorded and transcribed interviews with the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament who, in 1915, founded Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) and continue to serve today. This article reflects on the beginnings of XULA and its unique place in Southern black history as the only Roman Catholic historically black college or university (HBCU) in the United States. The intention of this thesis is to stir up marriage counselors into taking a fresh look at their methods for preparing and educating American couples for marriage, as the research will show that couples need much more than mere test results and analytics. Nguyễn An Ninh’S Anti-Colonial Thought: A New Account Of National Shame, Kevin D. Pham

A source of national shame can be the perception that one’s nation is intellectually inferior to other nations. This kind of national shame can lead not to despair but to a sense of national responsibility to engage in creative self-renewal and to create national identity from scratch. An exemplar of someone who recognized and engaged with this kind of national shame is Nguyễn An Ninh (1900–1943), an influential Vietnamese anti-colonial intellectual in French colonial Vietnam. Ninh’s account of national shame challenges existing assumptions in political theory, namely that national identity requires national pride, that national shame comes from bad actions …

Examining The Relationship Between Legal Origin And Levels Of Economic Globalization, Maeve B. Dwyer

State institutions that came into being centuries ago have taken on different roles in the post-World War II period of globalization. These institutions may have changed significantly as their roles have become greater to accommodate participation in the global political economy. The theory I develop in this paper indicates that the legal origins of a state continue to have a relationship with its current level of economic globalization. This theory is based on previous research produced by several other scholars. My research focuses on the English common law origin and I hypothesize that countries with this legal origin are more …

Environmental regulation is often viewed as conflicting with economic needs. This paper examines under what personal and contextual economic conditions individuals support increased environmental protection efforts. Data from the 2017 World Values Survey is analyzed to determine the probability that an individual will prioritize environmental protection over economic growth at varying levels of household income with a comparison between the context of an economically secure country and an economically insecure country. The results indicate that, across all income levels, individuals in economically secure countries are more likely to prioritize the environment than those in economically insecure countries. he University of New Orleans’ Survey Research Center (SRC) conducted a statewide interactive voice response (IVR) survey of Louisiana voters on the topic of who they preferred in the 2020 presidential election. We also asked them about the Covid-19 virus. Survey respondents were randomly selected from the Louisiana Secretary of State’s voter file. However, not all registered voters were eligible for the poll. Only those registered voters who had voted at least once in the past ten statewide elections in Louisiana were selected for the sample. The sample of 755 respondents was collected by telephone IVR on Thursday October 22, …

The following case study adapted a library instruction course to support students’ ability to construct a thesis statement. Given at an urban junior college, the goal of the credit-bearing course is for students to acquire effective research strategies for finding reliable information and to develop information literacy skills. For this study, pedagogy divided thesis writing development over the course of several weeks in which students reviewed sample theses and the work of their peers, providing feedback to fellow students and revising their own work based on feedback from both students and instructors. At the end of May, the third month of a shelter-in-place order in the counties of the San Francisco Bay Area, protests erupted daily in Oakland (California) following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. After a spree of early looting, the businesses along Oakland’s main corridors—many still closed to the public today, in November—had boarded up their windows leaving a ready canvas for a host of street artists and muralists to make their mark. The protest works that emerged are both beautiful and politically fraught, exposing some of the most sensitive social and economic divisions in the US. With …

Most language inequality for infants begins very early in their development. For most, this disparity develops prior to 36 months (Farkus & Baron, 2000).

• Significant disparities in vocabulary size between socioeconomic status (SES) were evident by 18 months. By 24 months, there was a 6 month age gap (Fernald et al, 2011).

• 65% of low SES preschoolers in head start programs had clinically significant language delays (Ramey and Ramey, 2004)

• Maternal education is a known indicator of SES and is correlated with language input for infants (Dollaghan et al. 1999).

This report was created to quantify and qualify the value of historic archives managed by the Parkview Library within the Institutional Repository (IR) and/or our internal platform Sharepoint.

Parkview Hospital has a long history and with an accumulation of documents and photographs. These historic materials (digital and physical) reside between three Parkview departments: Marketing, Media Services, and the Resource Library. The Parkview Resource Library receives two or three requests for archival materials annually.
