Beyond Black And White Spatial Imaginaries: A Case Study Of The Model Cities Area In St. Louis, Missouri, Clark Randall May 2024

Beyond Black And White Spatial Imaginaries: A Case Study Of The Model Cities Area In St. Louis, Missouri, Clark Randall

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Building on, and departing from, George Lipsitz’ theory of white and Black spatial imaginaries, this article analyzes how race-based spatial imaginaries took form in the urban planning politics of 1960’s St. Louis. Specifically, the era of Model Cities funding from 1966-1972 is evaluated as a case study of competing spatial imaginaries for the cities’ future involving the majority Black neighborhoods of the near north side and the preexisting white planning establishment. A part of Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society, Model Cities sought to usher in a new framework for citizen planning, putting residents and their local knowledge at the head …

The Nuanced Relationship Between Mindfulness, Racial Prejudice, And Policy Support, Jared Michael Cutler May 2024

The Nuanced Relationship Between Mindfulness, Racial Prejudice, And Policy Support, Jared Michael Cutler

Dissertations and Theses

Researchers have investigated the relationship between mindfulness and prejudice, although the findings have been somewhat inconsistent. Two broad factors may be responsible for these mixed findings: different conceptualizations of mindfulness across studies, and ideological differences among participants. Attention monitoring and acceptance, together, are proposed to be responsible for the psychological benefits of mindfulness, including reduced emotion rumination. Attention alone, however, strengthens rumination, which predicts prejudice. Additionally, prejudice hinders the endorsement of equitable policy. As such, mindfulness measures and interventions that capture attention alone, then, may be positively related to prejudice and negatively associated with support for equitable policy, whereas mindfulness …

Dangerous Ambition: Character Analysis Of Major General Horatio Gates, Harold Allen Skinner Jr. May 2024

Dangerous Ambition: Character Analysis Of Major General Horatio Gates, Harold Allen Skinner Jr.

Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History

Historian Robert Middlekauff describes Revolutionary War-era America as a society of the twice-born, people profoundly influenced by both radical English Whig ideology and the reformed Protestantism of the Great Awakening.[1] Historians have studied the influence of Christianity on many of the leading figures of the American Revolution, with the notable exception of Major General Horatio Gates. Gates’ military career presents a paradox to military historians: how could the victor at Saratoga in 1778 suffer ignominious defeat at Camden in August 1780? This paper will argue that Horatio Gates’ misfortunes during the American Revolution were due principally to his unregenerate …

Impacts Of Dam Construction On Hydro-Geomorphic Alteration In The Rio Coca, Richard Allen Lytle Iii May 2024

Impacts Of Dam Construction On Hydro-Geomorphic Alteration In The Rio Coca, Richard Allen Lytle Iii

Geography Undergraduate Senior Theses

Researchers have quantified the hydrologic, sedimentologic, and geomorphic effects of dams extensively in the past century. Many of these studies have focused on dams in the United States and Europe, yet the rising dam construction in low latitude areas necessitates further research into the effects of these dams on the rivers they harness. This investigation aims to discover how the hydrologic, sedimentologic, and geomorphic effects of dams differ in low latitudes, specifically in high elevation areas. We use the Coca Codo Sinclair Dam on the Río Coca in Napo, Ecuador, as our study site. We employ a multipronged methodology using …

Journal of Indonesian Health Policy and Administration

Public Health Centers (PHCs) are responsible for organizing public health efforts and individual health efforts. PHCs also serve as FKTP, UPTD, sub-district supervisors, and implementers of policies and programs from the Ministry of Health. The workload of PHCs is increasing because people visit PHCs primarily for treatment, rather than seeking preventive measures to stay healthy. The PHCs have Sub-PHCs to lighten the workload of the PHCs, but there is no policy regulating Sub-PHCs to be used as FKTP. This research aims to analyze the policy of Balancing Community and Individual Health Efforts by utilizing Sub-PHCs such as FKTP. The research …

Evaluating The Relationship Between Parent-Adolescent Communication, Social Media Use, And Psychological Well-Being In Adolescents, Johannah Smith

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Adolescents, particularly teenage girls, use social media substantially more than any other age group (Boneva et al., 2006; Gross, 2004; Padilla-Walker et al., 2020). Greater social media use has been linked to internalizing and externalizing problems; however, specific social media behavior and the relation to internalizing and externalizing problems is unknown. Additionally, how parent-adolescent communication impacts the relationships has not been explored. This is concerning as specific social media behavior, such as ruminating with peers and general social media addiction, has been linked to adolescents’ psychological well-being. (Sarmiento et al., 2020; Shensa et al., 2017; Nesi et al., 2020). The …

In 2022, the success rate of tuberculosis treatment in DKI Jakarta Province is 81%, while the national target is 90%. In the field, the number of cadres to carry out contact investigations is still insufficient, so that in 2022 the coverage of contact investigations in DKI Jakarta Province will only reach 25%, while the national target is 90%. To increase the scope of successful treatment, the government should try to overcome tuberculosis, which is needed. Proper program management is required to run effectively and efficiently for …

Sexism In Spiritual Divination: Tarot Cards, Noel Grinsteinner

Sociology Student Work Collection

An exploration of gender depiction and heteronormativity in the art of Tarot Cards. This art originated in France and Italy during the 14th century, yet did not have connections to spirituality until 4 centuries later. This presentation provides a condensed breakdown of the cards, and argues that Tarot is inherently linked to femininity, due to significant contributions from women particularly amidst the Second Wave Feminist Movement. Includes examples from the Rider-Waite Smith deck to compare the difference between portrayal of the sexes and their underlying misogynistic meanings. Deck authors advocate for more inclusivity in tarot, and to show up for …

Direct And Indirect Effects Of And Preference For Feedback During The Good Behavior Game In Elementary Classes, Jensen Chotto May 2024

Direct And Indirect Effects Of And Preference For Feedback During The Good Behavior Game In Elementary Classes, Jensen Chotto

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Good Behavior Game (GBG) is an effective procedure for reducing disruptive classroom behavior. In this study, students in 3 fifth grade classes selected the rules of the GBG and then experienced the GBG with different forms of feedback delivery for rule violations (vocal and visual, vocal only, visual only, no feedback) on disruptive classroom behavior in a multielement design. All versions of the GBG substantially reduced disruptive behavior below baseline levels. Additionally, in 1 of 3 classes, losing the GBG produced an increase in negative peer interactions immediately following the GBG. Subsequently, students selected which condition they previously experienced …

Urban And Rural Bmi Trajectories In Southeastern Ghana: A Space-Time Modeling Perspective On Spatial Autocorrelation, Hsiao-Chien Shih, Xiaoxiao Wei, Li An, John Weeks, Douglas Stow

International Journal of Geospatial and Environmental Research

Spatial autocorrelation in model residuals can have a significant impact on the results of spatial or space-time models. This can result in misleading estimates of the influence of different factors, potentially exaggerating or even reversing the perceived effects of these factors. This study also considers the potential implications of the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP) in the context of spatial-temporal models. In this case study for southeastern Ghana, we examined whether and how spatial autocorrelation in model residuals might generate bias in regression coefficients when explaining women’s body mass index (BMI) across urban and rural areas. Eigenvector spatial filtering, with …
