System Of Care Implementation In New York State: Prepared For The Nys Conference Of Local Mental Hygiene Directors, Inc., Center For Human Services Research, University At Albany

Behavioral Health Services Reports and Research Briefs

The concept of System of Care (SOC) is a framework with values and principles to guide the field in reforming child-serving systems, services, and supports to better meet the needs of children and youth with or at risk for mental health challenges and their families. The framework includes: 1) a clear philosophy to guide service delivery, 2) an infrastructure to guide services and supports for children, and 3) a broad range of services and supports (Stroul, Blau, & Friedman, 2010, Stroul, 2002).

This report describes the results of two project activities: 1) analysis of quantitative and qualitative data from the …

Analyzing Tweets On New Norm: Work From Home During Covid-19 Outbreak, Swapna Gottipati, Kyong Jin Shim, Hui Hian Teo, Karthik Nityanand, Shreyansh Shivam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a large-scale work-from-home trend globally in recent months. In this paper, we study the phenomenon of “work-from-home” (WFH) by performing social listening. We propose an analytics pipeline designed to crawl social media data and perform text mining analyzes on textual data from tweets scrapped based on hashtags related to WFH in COVID-19 situation. We apply text mining and NLP techniques to analyze the tweets for extracting the WFH themes and sentiments (positive and negative). Our Twitter theme analysis adds further value by summarizing the common key topics, allowing employers to gain more insights on areas of …

Generalized Jump Regressions For Local Moments, Tim Bollerslev, Jia Li, Leonardo Salim Saker Chaves Jan 2021

Generalized Jump Regressions For Local Moments, Tim Bollerslev, Jia Li, Leonardo Salim Saker Chaves

Research Collection School Of Economics

We develop new high-frequency-based inference procedures for analyzing the relationship between jumps in instantaneous moments of stochastic processes. The estimation consists of two steps: the nonparametric determination of the jumps as differences in local averages, followed by a minimum-distance type estimation of the parameters of interest under general loss functions that include both least-square and more robust quantile regressions as special cases. The resulting asymptotic distribution of the estimator, derived under an infill asymptotic setting, is highly nonstandard and generally not mixed normal. In addition, we establish the validity of a novel bootstrap algorithm for making feasible inference including bias-correction. …

Cooperatives And The Question Of Democracy, Mark J. Kaswan Jan 2021

Cooperatives And The Question Of Democracy, Mark J. Kaswan

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Democracy is generally considered to be a core element of cooperatives. However, other than elected boards of directors, it appears to play little part in either the governance or operations of most cooperatives. Two challenges to democracy are identified. One is the idea that cooperatives will tend to lose their democratic character over time. The other is that many cooperatives are founded primarily for economic reasons, and democracy is a second-order concern. The paper explores the question of how important democracy is to cooperatives, identifying warning signs and encouraging cooperatives to take a more active approach to promote participation. Democracy …

The Influence Of Language-Specific And Universal Factors On Acquisition Of Motion Verbs, Rebecca Smyder, Kaitlyn Harrigan Jan 2021

The Influence Of Language-Specific And Universal Factors On Acquisition Of Motion Verbs, Rebecca Smyder, Kaitlyn Harrigan

Arts & Sciences Articles

This study explores children’s encoding of novel verbs referring to motion events, and finds influence of both language-specific and universal constraints on meaning. Motion verbs fall into two categories—manner verbs encode how a movement happens (run, swim), and path verbs encode the starting and ending point of a motion (enter, fall). Some languages express path more frequently in the verb (Spanish, Hebrew), and others manner more frequently (English, German). Our study expands on this previous work demonstrating sensitivity to these language-specific distributions, as well as expanding to test environmental factors representing a predictable …

The Role Of Alexithymia In Memory And Executive Functioning Across The Lifespan, Anthony N. Correro, Elizabeth Rose Paitel, Steven J. Byers, Kristy A. Nielson

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Alexithymia is a personality trait characterised by difficulties identifying feelings (DIF), describing feelings (DDF), and externally oriented thinking (EOT). Alexithymia has been associated with poorer memory, at least for emotive materials, and recently, with executive and neural dysfunction. Aging is also accompanied by poorer memory and executive functioning (EF), neural dysfunction, and increasing alexithymia. Thus, the hypothesis of a general cognitive impairment in alexithymia, particularly in elders, needs investigation. Three large, independent, cross-sectional experiments (n = 296, 139 and 121, respectively) investigated memory and EF in healthy adults, ranging from young to old adulthood, with age, sex, and the …

Time Domain Boundary Element Method Prediction Of Noise Shielding By A Naca 0012 Airfoil, Douglas M. Nark, Fang Q. Hu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

As aircraft noise constraints become more stringent and the number/mixture of aircraft configurations grows, it becomes more important to understand the interaction of individual aircraft noise sources with nearby aircraft structures. Understanding these interactions and exploring possible approaches to mitigate or exploit their acoustic impact is essential for overcoming key noise barriers. This paper describes the further validation of a time domain boundary element approach for the prediction of the interactions between incident noise sources and nearby aircraft structures. Predictions were completed for multiple source locations and comparisons of these results with measured data are presented. Overall, very good agreement …

Current Market Rates For Scholarly Publishing Services, Alexander Grossman, Björn Brembs Jan 2021

Current Market Rates For Scholarly Publishing Services, Alexander Grossman, Björn Brembs

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

For decades, the supra-inflation increase of subscription prices for scholarly journals has concerned scholarly institutions. After years of fruitless efforts to solve this “serials crisis”, open access has been proposed as the latest potential solution. However, the prices for open access publishing are also high and are rising well beyond inflation. What has been missing from the public discussion so far is a quantitative approach to determine the actual costs of efficiently publishing a scholarly article using state-of-the-art technologies, such that informed decisions can be made as to appropriate price levels. Here we provide a granular, step-by-step calculation of the …

Academic Libraries And Open Access Books In Europe: A Landscape Study, Agata Morka, Rupert Gatti Jan 2021

Academic Libraries And Open Access Books In Europe: A Landscape Study, Agata Morka, Rupert Gatti

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Executive Summary

The last fifteen years have witnessed the emergence of a new role for academic libraries. Besides fulfilling their fundamental task of providing access to knowledge, besides being called everything from temples of knowledge to disturbing heterotopias, libraries have become one of the crucial stakeholders in the open access book publishing space. They act as funders for OA book fees, they support collaborative funding schemes, and sometimes they assume the role of publishers themselves.

In an attempt to create a sustainable publishing environment, in which OA books could blossom, it is therefore necessary to gain a sound understanding of …

Introducing The Copyright Anxiety Scale, Amanda Wakaruk, Céline Gareau-Brennan, Matthew Pietrosanu

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Navigating copyright issues can be frustrating to the point of causing anxiety, potentially discouraging or inhibiting legitimate uses of copyright-protected materials. A lack of data about the extent and impact of these phenomena, known as copyright anxiety and copyright chill, respectively, motivated the authors to create the Copyright Anxiety Scale (CAS). This article provides an overview of the CAS’s development and validity testing. Results of an initial survey deployment drawing from a broad cross-section of respondents living in Canada and the United States (n = 521) establishes that the phenomenon of copyright anxiety is prevalent and likely associated with …

Scite: A Smart Citation Index That Displays The Context Of Citations And Classifies Their Intent Using Deep Learning, Josh M. Nicholson, Milo Mordaunt, Patrice Lopez, Ashish Uppala, Domenic Rosati, Neves P. Rodrigues, Peter Grabitz, Sean C. Rife Jan 2021

Scite: A Smart Citation Index That Displays The Context Of Citations And Classifies Their Intent Using Deep Learning, Josh M. Nicholson, Milo Mordaunt, Patrice Lopez, Ashish Uppala, Domenic Rosati, Neves P. Rodrigues, Peter Grabitz, Sean C. Rife

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Citation indices are tools used by the academic community for research and research evaluation that aggregate scientific literature output and measure impact by collating citation counts. Citation indices help measure the interconnections between scientific papers but fall short because they fail to communicate contextual information about a citation. The use of citations in research evaluation without consideration of context can be problematic because a citation that presents contrasting evidence to a paper is treated the same as a citation that presents supporting evidence. To solve this problem, we have used machine learning, traditional document ingestion methods, and a network of …

Exploring Evidence Of Lost And Forgotten Irish Food Traditions In Irish Cookbooks 1980-2015, Diarmaid Murphy Jan 2021

Exploring Evidence Of Lost And Forgotten Irish Food Traditions In Irish Cookbooks 1980-2015, Diarmaid Murphy

Articles

A study by the Irish Food Board, Bord Bia, in 2008 outlined some lost and forgotten food traditions in Ireland based on the evidence from a pre-selected expert group. This paper explores the inclusion of traditional Irish foods within seventy-nine Irish cookbooks, published between 1980 to 2015. Extant academic and grey literature on food traditions and cookbooks, together with the content of the cookbooks, identified a gradual decline in the presence of certain traditional Irish foods, to the point where they could be deemed lost or forgotten. The study, however, also finds a re-emergence in the most recent period. A …

Sense Of Belonging Increases Performance Expectations Among Women In Stem Fields, Anne Brown, Ariana Gaydon Jan 2021

Sense Of Belonging Increases Performance Expectations Among Women In Stem Fields, Anne Brown, Ariana Gaydon

Undergraduate Research Symposium

This research examines threatening educational environments for women STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) majors. Previous research found that underrepresented groups receive subtle and overt messages that they do not belong in science and academia which leads to lower science identity, lower grades, and switching to a non-STEM major (Ong et al. 2011; Robnett 2016; Rainey et al., 2018). This study used survey data from students (N = 213) from a western university. The results indicate a 2-way interaction between sense of belonging (or the acceptance an individual feels regarding a specific group or environment) and science identity (how …

The Effect Of Barriers To Treatments, And The Attitudes And Beliefs Toward Medication Assisted Treatment (Mat) On The Readiness To Change Within Young Adults Engaging In Regular Alcohol And Opioid Use., Kylie Thorwardson, Ryan Carpenter, Miriam Mead

Undergraduate Research Symposium

People who use substances vary in terms of the problems they experience and the degree to which they feel change is needed. Among those who are interested in making changes, many have qualms and questions about doing so, despite the potential positive benefits of reducing use. Young adults who use substances are especially unlikely to receive substance-focused treatment. It is unclear to what extent this is due to limited access to treatment, a lack of desire to change, beliefs that existing treatments are unlikely to be beneficial, or a combination of factors. This study will examine the associations of perceived …

Bold Signal Variability Patterns In Neural Correlates Of Reflection And Brooding Components Of Rumination, Katie Leutzinger, Carissa Philippi Jan 2021

Bold Signal Variability Patterns In Neural Correlates Of Reflection And Brooding Components Of Rumination, Katie Leutzinger, Carissa Philippi

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Researchers have established that rumination is a debilitating symptom that positively correlates with symptoms of depression. Rumination involves self-focused attention, often negative, as a means of coping with a depressed mood or sadness. The Ruminative Responses Scale (RRS) is a tool used to measure rumination severity that includes two subsets of rumination: brooding and reflection. Brooding rumination is related to passive and judgmental thoughts about one’s circumstances and is therefore associated with higher levels of past and current depression. Although brooding is thought to be a maladaptive response to feelings of depression, past studies suggest that the reflection subtype may …
