Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Although alcohol use is on the rise among young Latina college students, little is known about drinking behaviors among this population. The present study sought to expand the current literature by examining (a) the mediating role of alcohol use in the relationship between perceived discrimination and acculturative stress, in addition to (b) competing models of conditional moderated mediation between perceived discrimination, alcohol use, marianismo beliefs, and acculturative stress, while accounting for nativity. Path analyses were conducted with data from 1243 Latina students between the ages of 18 and 25 from college campuses across the U.S. Mediation analyses indicated that alcohol …

A Mixed Methods Exploration Of Fairness Issues In Algorithmic Policing Systems, Emmanuel Sebastian Udoh Jan 2022

A Mixed Methods Exploration Of Fairness Issues In Algorithmic Policing Systems, Emmanuel Sebastian Udoh

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Algorithmic governance (AG) systems aim to utilize machine learning (ML) in the form of mathematical modelling and predictive analytics to achieve greater efficiency and accuracy, effect equal treatment and eliminate bias. In its application to policing, algorithmic policing (AP) or predictive policing applies tree-based risk training algorithms on criminal complaint data to predict where and when the next crime is likely to occur, and who the likeliest perpetrators and victims are. Thus, AP preemptively determines where, how, and when to deploy police resources. However, as more and more cities adopt AP, there are fears that AP may be reinforcing age-long …

Human–Wildlife Interactions

The Japanese serow (Capricornis crispus; serow) is a protected territorial ungulate native to Japan. However, locally overabundant serow populations can damage forest plantations and agriculture through browsing. Despite government permitted annual culling of serows on forest lands of Gifu Prefecture, Japan, browse damage continues to be reported in hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa; cypress) plantations. Sika deer (Cervus nippon; deer), which are co-located with serows can also browse cypress, but their impacts have never been evaluated. The objective of our research was to evaluate the involvement of each species in browse damage and to establish …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Wildlife Strike Rates In The United States, Dan Parsons, Michael Malouf, Wayne Martin

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic impacted air traffic, industry bodies warned of the potential increase in wildlife strike risk. Prior to the pandemic, wildlife strikes were already a concern to the industry. We sought to evaluate industry warnings using interrupted time series analysis of wildlife strike trends in the United States. Using pre-pandemic wildlife strike trends, we compared a forecast of the expected monthly strike rates through the COVID-19 impact period (March 2020 to December 2020) to the actual wildlife strike rates for the same period. Our results showed an increase in wildlife strike rates in 5 out of the …

À La Carte Cable: A Regulatory Solution To The Misinformation Subsidy, Christopher R. Terry, Eliezer J. Silberberg, Stephen Schmitz, John Stack, Eve Sando

Catholic University Journal of Law and Technology

Although “fake news” is as old as mass media itself, concerns over disinformation have reached a fever pitch in our current media environment. Online media outlets’ heavy reliance on user-generated content has altered the traditional gatekeeping functions and professional standards associated with traditional news organizations. The idea of objectivity-focused informational content has primarily been substituted for a realist acceptance of the power and popularity of opinion-driven “news.” This shift is starkly visible now: mainstream news media outlets knowingly spread hoaxes, conspiracy theories, and the like.

This current state of affairs is not some freak accident. The Supreme Court’s First Amendment …

The Application Of The Right To Be Forgotten In The Machine Learning Context: From The Perspective Of European Laws, Zeyu Zhao Jan 2022

The Application Of The Right To Be Forgotten In The Machine Learning Context: From The Perspective Of European Laws, Zeyu Zhao

Catholic University Journal of Law and Technology

The right to be forgotten has been evolving for decades along with the progress of different statutes and cases and, finally, independently enacted by the General Data Protection Regulation, making it widely applied across Europe. However, the related provisions in the regulation fail to enable machine learning systems to realistically forget the personal information which is stored and processed therein.

This failure is not only because existing European rules do not stipulate standard codes of conduct and corresponding responsibilities for the parties involved, but they also cannot accommodate themselves to the new environment of machine learning, where specific information can …

The Gradual Disappearance Of Financial Literacy In Today's World. What Is Financial Literacy And Why Is It So Important? My Own Story Of Acquisition, Eileen Gertrude Cammilla Kristiansen

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

There is a growing concern in this country that the middle class is disappearing and not in the way one would hope. Instead of families moving into a higher socio-economic class and being able to provide richer life experiences for themselves and their children, vast numbers are shifting to a lower socio-economic status level. The gap between the affluent and those barely eking out an existence is increasing at an alarming rate. This trend will directly affect who can successfully attend college and who will be available and capable to perform the blue-collar jobs that are vital to the continuation …

Utilizing Attachment Theory In The Treatment Of Interpersonal Dysfunction For Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Meghan Semenick Jan 2022

Utilizing Attachment Theory In The Treatment Of Interpersonal Dysfunction For Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Meghan Semenick

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) can be characterized as a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and lack of empathy beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts (APA, 2013). A core feature within NPD is interpersonal dysfunction, which in an extreme form, can be physically, emotionally, and sexually abusive. The etiology of this disorder is rooted in the type of parenting received during childhood, which develops into an individual’s overall attachment style. For this reason, I propose that by identifying adult attachment styles for individuals with NPD, appropriate attachment-based interventions can be selected to treat interpersonal …

A Literature Resource For Those Supporting Patients With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Cancer, Kaylee James

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts both social interaction and patterns of behavior. ASD is rooted in genetic, biological, and environmental causes. Cancer begins when cells grow out of control and there is also a genetic and biological cause of cancer. There is an overlap between the genetic and biological causes of ASD and cancer. As a result, evidence supports an increased risk of developing some types of cancer as well as protective factors for some times of cancer for individuals with ASD. Therefore, individuals with ASD may be at a heightened risk to develop cancer, …

Around the world, trauma disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are on the rise. Evidence-based treatment protocols, such as cognitive processing therapy (CPT) and prolonged exposure (PE) are effective in treatment. However, high dropout rates, stigma, and other barriers to treatment are driving the exploration of alternative treatment options. Nature-based interventions, such as wilderness or adventure therapy, forest bathing, and horticulture therapy, have been utilized for a variety of medical and psychological disorders for several years. There are limited formal programs, but research generally supports positive outcomes with specified interventions. However, there are several challenges to studying the effectiveness …

Network Analysis Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms, Shame, And Guilt In Those With A Sexual Assault History, Alison C. Legrand

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Sexual assault is associated with increased risk for physical and mental health challenges, specifically PTSD. Survivors of sexual assault experience PTSD at increased rates compared to those who have experienced other forms of trauma. Individuals who experience sexual assault are also less likely to seek mental health treatment following the assault. Trauma-related cognitions are associated with increased PTSD symptom severity, specifically trauma-related guilt, and shame. However, previous studies have rarely examined the impact of trauma-related guilt and shame simultaneously. Previous literature has suggested that trauma-related guilt is significantly related to PTSD symptom severity, however other studies examining trauma-related shame simultaneously …

Associations Between Fatigue, Fatigue Catastrophizing, Sleep Behaviors, And Depression Severity In Winter Depression., Julia Anne Camuso

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Winter seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a recurrent subtype of major depressive disorder that onsets in the fall and winter and remits in the spring and summer. Hypersomnia is the most common sleep problem in SAD based on self-report measures, but studies using behavioral measures of sleep patterns in SAD are needed to corroborate this. The present study assessed behavioral (via actigraphy) and self-reported (via daily sleep diaries) sleep patterns, fatigue catastrophizing (FC; i.e., excessively negative expectations about fatigue), and depression severity in 91 currently depressed SAD patients. Participants were grouped according to sleep problems endorsed during clinical interview covering …
