Pure-Ly For Authors: An Update Of A Health System Researcher Profile Platform, Heather J. Martin, Amanda Schwartz
Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)
In 2023, a large healthcare system transitioned their institutional repository's author profile service to an upgraded and more comprehensive platform, and in doing so re-energized author and leadership buy-in.
After Digital Commons'™ Expert Gallery Suite eliminated some functionality, institutional repository (IR) staff began the process of exploring other author profile platforms that would align with essential workflows. Elsevier's™ Pure rose to the top of compatible and robust platforms suitable to replace our previous solution.
Pure's™ automated importing and database-integration was a primary draw, but IR staff had to find creative ways to utilize the administrative features that didn't integrate with …

Israel-Palestine Conflict, Gabriel Mott
Critical Questions
On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a powerful surprise attack on the state of Israel, killing more than one thousand people. While this may represent a spike in violence, it is not the beginning. Tensions have existed on the West Bank since the onset of World War I, while a series of negotiations, third party interventions, and frequent violence has exacerbated the problem in the following decades. With this in mind, this Critical Question identifies key actors in the conflict, the history and progression of the conflict, and reasonable predictions for the future of the conflict in the Middle East.

Reversing The Downward Curve: When Is Progressive Discipline Necessary And How To Focus On Positive Improvement And Retention Within An Access Services Department?, Kay Coates, Jessica Garner
Library Faculty Presentations
A challenge that many leaders face in Access Services is managing employee relations. A team with high morale will be well-functioning, collegial, and more likely to represent the library positively. What is a leader to do when they notice a slow degenerative change in morale or when a department has become toxic? This is when clearly defined progressive discipline can be used as a tool to guide a department back on track. Progressive discipline should not be punitive especially if it incorporates a sense of belonging steeped in DEI. Using positive discipline techniques that reinforce connectedness, team spirit, and genuine …

Equidad y Desarrollo

Background
In industrialized populations, low male testosterone is associated with higher rates of cardiovascular mortality. However, coronary risk factors like obesity impact both testosterone and cardiovascular outcomes. Here, we assess the role of endogenous testosterone on coronary artery calcium in an active subsistence population with relatively low testosterone levels, low cardiovascular risk and low coronary artery calcium scores.
Methodology
In this cross-sectional community-based study, 719 Tsimane forager-horticulturalists in the Bolivian Amazon aged 40+ years underwent computed tomography (49.8% male, mean age 57.6 years).
Results
Coronary artery calcium levels were low; 84.5% had no coronary artery calcium. Zero-inflated negative binomial models …

Circular Food Education: Developing A Food Education Programme Based On Sustainability, Experiential Learning And Pleasure In Irish Primary Schools, Michelle Darmody Dr
Doctoral
This research explored how an expanded and sustained education about food within the primary school curriculum in the Republic of Ireland could be achieved. A constructivist ontology underpinned the project, with multiple theoretical frameworks related to constructivist learning and building agency, informing the study. A multi-method action research methodology was used, providing practical solutions through action, reflection, practice and theory. A narrative review of the literature and existing policy preceded three sections of fieldwork. A scoping consultation with key stakeholders was followed by the development and piloting of a food education programme entitled the Global Citizenship Food and Biodiversity Theme …

Addressing The Unmentionable At The Circulation Desk: An Unlikely Library Partnership For An Often-Overlooked Cause: Period Equity, Jessica Garner
Library Faculty Presentations
The role of libraries at universities has grown over the years in surprising ways to improve service to the academic and student community. One such surprising change came from a project aimed at decreasing period poverty. The Period Equity Movement (PEM) was created in collaboration with the university’s Office of Student Wellness and Health Promotion through funding that came from a $48,000 Sustainability Fee grant and other internal funding. The grant specifically focused on purchasing reusable products such as menstrual cups and fabric pads and organic disposable tampons and pads. The Access Services Department became an impactful partner in this …

Recent Demographic Trends Have Implications For Rural Health Care, Kenneth M. Johnson
Recent Demographic Trends Have Implications For Rural Health Care, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey School of Public Policy
In this brief, Senior Demographer Kenneth Johnson reports nonmetropolitan (rural) America gained population between April of 2020 and July of 2022. In the preceding decade, rural areas lost population, both because more people left rural areas than moved to them and because births just minimally exceeded deaths. In contrast, the recent, modest rural population increase occurred because a significant net migration gain more than offset the growing excess of deaths over births fostered by the pandemic. That rural migration was strong enough to produce population growth is especially surprising given that deaths outnumbered births—in part due to the pandemic—in 85 …

How To Define (Or Not To Define) The New History Of Capitalism, Sharon Ann Murphy
How To Define (Or Not To Define) The New History Of Capitalism, Sharon Ann Murphy
Economics Faculty Publications
Lindsay Schakenbach Regele’s essay “A Brief History of the History of Capitalism, and a New American Variety” attempts to provide more structure to the field known as the new history of capitalism (NHOC) by defining martial capitalism as a new variant. In contrast, this essay asserts that the lack of definitional precision within the NHOC is not a bug, but rather one of its key features. To define capitalism would be to delimit where it was and was not present historically. If part of the argument of the NHOC is that capitalism pervaded—indeed infected—all aspects of American life, then defining …

Prosecutors Or Helpers: An Institutional Ethnography Of Child Protective Services Casework, Anna Maria Rockhill
Dissertations and Theses
The mission of child welfare is to strengthen the ability of families to care for their children and to protect children and provide aid, services, or referrals to families where maltreatment is said to have occurred. The vast majority of the families who become involved with child welfare are multiply disadvantaged and child welfare is a key feature of the array of public supports for struggling families. However, the institution fails many of the families it serves. Despite recent efforts by those in the field to promote collaboration and engagement, many parents experience child welfare as neither empowering nor helpful …
