Silence Is Golden: Communication, Silence, And Cartel Stability, Atin Basu Choudhary, John Conlon
Silence Is Golden: Communication, Silence, And Cartel Stability, Atin Basu Choudhary, John Conlon
Atin Basu Choudhary
This paper studies how cartel stability is influenced by asymmetric information and communication about demand. Firms in a cartel face fluctuating demand in a repeated game framework. In each period, one randomly chosen firm knows current demand. In this context we consider two different equilibria -- one where the informed firm communicates its information to its partners and another where it does not. We show that cartels are extremely unstable when the informed firm communicates with the uninformed firms. However, when the informed firm does not communicate with the uninformed firms cartels can be as stable as when there are …
Are Television News Programs Becoming Nothing More Than Infotainment?, Nicole Morell
Are Television News Programs Becoming Nothing More Than Infotainment?, Nicole Morell
Senior Honors Projects
The money driven, have-it-done-by-yesterday world Americans live in takes no prisoners, and television news is certainly no exception. Driven by profits and struggling to keep up with the busy American with a short attention span and even shorter amount of free time, it seems broadcast television news programs have resorted to a man bites dog, blood and guts, celebrity format. What many think of as news seems to be no more than a few attention grabbing headlines already digested and spit back out in a way that the viewer can understand. In order to get down to the real story …
The Chasm Between Two Parallel Worlds, Brandi Harline
The Chasm Between Two Parallel Worlds, Brandi Harline
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In much of the research conducted on military issues, problems are identified years, sometimes decades, before the military publicly acknowledges these concerns; an example of this is sexual assault, which scholars discussed for over thirty years before the military acknowledged the issue. In this paper, I study the value differences between the military leadership and the scholars who study military topics and how these different values may hinder effective communication between the two groups. The method I use in identifying the standards by which the two groups identify problems is content analysis on articles published by the two communities, calculating …
Communication And Leadership: Faculty Perceptions Of The Department Chair, Kathleen Czech Edd
Communication And Leadership: Faculty Perceptions Of The Department Chair, Kathleen Czech Edd
Dissertations
With department chairs providing a critical link between faculty and administration, their leadership impacts universities on a broad level. However, chairs often report dissatisfaction with the position and experience rapid turnover. In an effort to help understand the role that communication plays in effective leadership for department chairs, this study provides an empirical test of Gibb's theory of defensive vs. supportive communication. As such, this project investigated the communication and leadership behaviors of university department chairs as evaluated by their faculty members. Specifically, 202 randomly selected faculty members from colleges and universities affiliated with the Council of Independent Colleges, Washington, …

The Portrayal Of Powerful Women In The Media, Kristin Milligan
The Portrayal Of Powerful Women In The Media, Kristin Milligan
Honors Projects in Communication
The purpose of this research is to investigate the portrayal of powerful women in the media and to gain a perspective of different ways the media tend to elaborate and focus on gender issues to a greater extent than the general public may think. I intend to demonstrate that powerful women are often portrayed unfairly in the media and that this could affect the progress they make in their careers. I hypothesize that although women are making strides in the right direction, the often negative portrayal of powerful women in the media can be unwarranted and lead to the unfair …

Intergenerational Family Communication About Mammography: Young Women's Perceptions, Intentions And Experiences, Jessica Browne, Amy Y. Chan
Intergenerational Family Communication About Mammography: Young Women's Perceptions, Intentions And Experiences, Jessica Browne, Amy Y. Chan
Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)
Early detection of breast cancer through regular mammograms is crucial to reducing the mortality rate, yet almost 50% of target women (aged 50-69years) fail to have regular mammograms. Young women aged 18-39 years (N = 60) participated in a two-stage study that explored familycommunication as a vehicle for mammography promotion to target women.Intention to initiate such a conversation was measured and predicted using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) framework. The TPB variables together produced a model that predicted behavioural performance, withintention being the only independent predictor.Young womens anticipatory perceptions and actual experiences of initiating a conversationabout mammography were also explored …
Frequency Of Communication Within Npd Projects: Implications For Key Measures Of Success, Elias Kyriazis
Frequency Of Communication Within Npd Projects: Implications For Key Measures Of Success, Elias Kyriazis
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
The nature of cross-functional relationships during NPD projects has received considerable research attention with an emphasis on achieving successful integration. To achieve this functional integration new product development activities often require functional specialists to communicate with one another to achieve their respective task goals. This study examines the frequency of communication within NPD projects as reported by R&D Manager from 184 Australian NPD projects. We find that informal methods of communication have a positive relationship with three key NPD outcome variables such as perceived relationship effectiveness, interpersonal collaboration and NPD project success. This study provides empirical support for the proposition …

On Short Forward Error-Correcting Codes For Wireless Communication Systems, Sheng Tong, Dengsheng Lin, Aleksandar Kavcic, Baoming Bai, Li Ping
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
For real-time wireless communications, short forward error-correcting (FEC) codes are indispensable due to the strict delay requirement. In this paper we study the performance of short FEC codes. Reed-Solomon (RS) codes and concatenated zigzag (CZ) codes are chosen as representatives of classical algebraic codes and modern simple iterative decodable codes, respectively. Additionally, we use random binary linear codes as a baseline reference for comparison. Our main results (demonstrated by both simulation and ensemble distance spectrum analysis) are as follows: 1) Short RS codes are as good as random binary linear codes; 2) Carefully designed short low- density parity-check (LDPC) codes …

Communication Counts, Christine G. Springer
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Publications
The author discusses the necessity of communications in a business setting. She cited the implementation of Plain Talk by the Annie E. Cassey Foundation which proves the fact that policy works best when decision makers, community residents and citizen customers communicate effectively. She also revealed that to surely achieve success in the business, it is suggested to never underestimate the emotional power of human nature and build a sense of community through continual communication.

Disaster Communication Networks: A Case Study Of The Thai Red Cross And Their Disaster Communication Response To The Asian Tsunami, Tami J. Matthews
Disaster Communication Networks: A Case Study Of The Thai Red Cross And Their Disaster Communication Response To The Asian Tsunami, Tami J. Matthews
Theses and Dissertations
Disaster victims and vulnerable populations are audiences that communications professionals and scholars have ignored. Public relation practices dominate current disaster communication policy. This study examines the disaster communication network, including policy and practice, of the Thai Red Cross, before, during, and after the Asian tsunami. Disaster communication(s) is defined as the sharing and exchange of information with the victims immediately affected by a disaster. This definition focuses specifically on the vulnerable audience and allows response efforts to emerge from multiple disciplines. Focusing response efforts on victims' assessed needs and abilities allows for a multi-disciplinary approach to mitigate further suffering. The …
