A 3d Characteristics Database Of Land Engraved Areas With Known Subclass, Entni Lin
A 3d Characteristics Database Of Land Engraved Areas With Known Subclass, Entni Lin
Student Theses
Subclass characteristics on bullets may mislead firearm examiners when they rely on traditional 2D images. In order to provide indelible examples for training and help avoid identification errors, 3D topography surface maps and statistical methods of pattern recognition are applied to toolmarks on bullets containing known subclass characteristics. This research was conducted by collecting 3D topography surface map data from land engraved areas of bullets fired through known barrels. This data was processed and used to train the statistical algorithms to predict their origin. The results from the algorithm are compared with the “right answers” (i.e. correct IDs) of the …

Marginal Mediation Analysis: A New Framework For Interpretable Mediated Effects, Tyson S. Barrett
Marginal Mediation Analysis: A New Framework For Interpretable Mediated Effects, Tyson S. Barrett
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Mediation analysis is built to answer not only if one variable affects another, but how the effect takes place. However, it lacks interpretable effect size estimates in situations where the mediator (an intermediate variable) and/or the outcome is categorical or otherwise non-normally distributed. By integrating a powerful approach known as average marginal effects within mediation analysis—termed Marginal Mediation Analysis (MMA)—the issues regarding categorical mediators and/or outcomes are, in large part, resolved. This new approach allows the estimation of the indirect effects (those effects of the predictor that affect the outcome through the mediator) that are interpreted in the same way …
The Greatest Basketball Player Of All Time: Lebron Vs. Jordan, Austin Jacobson
The Greatest Basketball Player Of All Time: Lebron Vs. Jordan, Austin Jacobson
Senior Honors Theses
LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes of this generation. I am seeking to determine what he needs to do to surpass Michael Jordan as the greatest of all time. Considering individual statistics, team success, and personal achievements as well as factors such as political and racial activism and involvement, media coverage (including social media), and generational difference, I am hoping to show what is left to accomplish for LeBron to reach and surpass Jordan.
Social Organization And Environmental Patterning At Tel Abu Shusha: An Integrated Spatial Approach To Survey Archaeology, Seth Price
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Tel Abu Shusha, located in the Jezreel Valley of Palestine, is a large-scale archaeological site possibly identified as the cities of Biblical Gaba or Roman Gaba Hippaeon/Gaba Philippi. Surface archaeological survey of the surrounding area, conducted by the Jezreel Valley Regional Project during 2017, revealed extensive assemblages of visible settlement features dating primarily to middle and late Islamic periods. This research seeks to answer questions of settlement decision-making and societal organization, by integrating archaeological, textual, environmental, and geospatial data sources. In addition to visual interpretation, Kolmogorov-Smirnov nonparametric tests are used to gain insight on environmental settlement preferences; Ripley’s K analysis …
Forecasting Labor Force Participation At The Regional Level In The United States: The Case Of Maine, Maryam Kashkooli
Forecasting Labor Force Participation At The Regional Level In The United States: The Case Of Maine, Maryam Kashkooli
Honors College
This project attempts to investigate the future of labor force participation in Maine using an econometric forecasting approach. Forecasting has become an increasingly popular form of statistical analysis which uses historical distributions to help estimate future distributions of econometric models. There exists extensive literature on forecasting employment, however the literature on forecasting labor force participation is relatively small. I adapt existing econometric models and make use of time series information on sociodemographic factors such as age and net migration in order to determine how Maine’s changing demographic structure is affecting its labor force and how these effects will carry on …
The Psychology Of Baseball: How The Mental Game Impacts The Physical Game, Kiera Dalmass
The Psychology Of Baseball: How The Mental Game Impacts The Physical Game, Kiera Dalmass
Honors Scholar Theses
The purpose of this study was to find whether or not sports psychology can be effective. Baseball was chosen as the sport for the study because baseball can be analyzed for nearly every single factor of the game, with the exception of the mental readiness or state of the player when he steps onto the field. It therefore provides the optimal atmosphere to provide clinical and statistical support to the field of sports psychology. Despite the various, numerous pieces of literature that praise and show support for sports psychology, there hasn’t been clinical research to support it. Additionally, multiple sports …

Essentials Of Structural Equation Modeling, Mustafa Emre Civelek
Essentials Of Structural Equation Modeling, Mustafa Emre Civelek
Zea E-Books Collection
Structural Equation Modeling is a statistical method increasingly used in scientific studies in the fields of Social Sciences. It is currently a preferred analysis method, especially in doctoral dissertations and academic researches. However, since many universities do not include this method in the curriculum of undergraduate and graduate courses, students and scholars try to solve the problems they encounter by using various books and internet resources.
This book aims to guide the researcher who wants to use this method in a way that is free from math expressions. It teaches the steps of a research program using structured equality modeling …
Automated Outlier Detection In Crime Data Using Programming, Aidan Connolly
Automated Outlier Detection In Crime Data Using Programming, Aidan Connolly
Honors Theses
After the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police Department began publishing their Daily Crime and Fire Log online, journalists and other members of the public have been able to view updates almost instantly. They can see what incidents have been reported so far for that day, and they can view any day back to 2005. Using an advanced search, they can also filter the data by date range, location or crime type. However, there is no way to analyze the data. There’s no way to see how crime reports have evolved over time. Other people have developed programs to look at past …

Does Player Performance Outside Of Major League Baseball Translate To The Mlb?, Ian Vogt
Does Player Performance Outside Of Major League Baseball Translate To The Mlb?, Ian Vogt
Honors Theses
Statistical analysis has transformed the way front offices across Major League Baseball manage the rosters of their teams. However, much of this statistical analysis is limited to evaluating players playing in the American major league environment. Little has been done in the way of using statistical analysis to evaluate how performance translates from league-to-league, and the market for international and college players remains highly inefficient, despite expansion of these player pools. My study is an attempt to make this market a more efficient one.
I measure the correlation between performance in two top international baseball leagues (Nippon Professional Baseball and …

University Libraries Materials Budget: Spring 2018, Sue Polanka, Karen Wilhoit
University Libraries Materials Budget: Spring 2018, Sue Polanka, Karen Wilhoit
University Libraries' Staff Publications
The University Libraries’ mission is to provide exceptional research services and resources to facilitate faculty and student success. We strive to uphold this mission in all we do. Our budget remains a challenge however, and limits our ability to provide exceptional resources. The Libraries’ materials budget has been flat or reduced every year since 2009. During that time, journal prices have increased an average of 5% to 6% per year, and book prices have increased an average of 1% to 2% per year. Because our budget has not kept pace with inflation, we have been forced to cancel over 800 …
