Application Geological Strength Index (Gsi) Quantification Method On The Characterization Of Carbonate Rock Mass, Singgih Saptono, Danu Mirza Rezky Aug 2023

Application Geological Strength Index (Gsi) Quantification Method On The Characterization Of Carbonate Rock Mass, Singgih Saptono, Danu Mirza Rezky

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Determining GSI as a representation of the presence of rock mass in slope analysis continues to develop. The development of the quantitative GSI method was carried out because the basic (qualitative) GSI values were deemed too subjective so the results from the use of the quantitative GSIwere expected to be more objective and accurate. The method used is to combine 3 GSI quantitative methods to find GSI based on surface conditions and joint structure. The results showed that the Quantitative GSI value was smaller than the GSI predictive value (qualitative). The GSI approach with RQD and UCS parameters is also …

An Investigation Into The Application Of The Meijering Filter For Document Recapture Detection, John Magee, Stephen Sheridan Phd, Christina Thorpe Phd

Conference papers

The proliferation of mobile devices allows financial institutions to offer remote customer services, such as remote account opening. Manipulation of identity documents using image processing software is a low-cost, high-risk threat to modern financial systems, opening these institutions to fraud through crimes related to identity theft. In this paper we describe our exploratory research into the application of biomedical image algorithms to the domain of document recapture detection. We perform a statistical analysis to compare different types of recaptured documents and train a support vector machine classifier on the raw histogram data generated using the Meijering filter. The results show …

Libra: Harvesting Idle Resources Safely And Timely In Serverless Clusters, Hanfei Yu, Christian Fontenot, Hao Wang, Jian Li, Xu Yuan, Seung Jong Park

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Serverless computing has been favored by users and infrastructure providers from various industries, including online services and scientific computing. Users enjoy its auto-scaling and ease-of-management, and providers own more control to optimize their service. However, existing serverless platforms still require users to pre-define resource allocations for their functions, leading to frequent misconfiguration by inexperienced users in practice. Besides, functions' varying input data further escalate the gap between their dynamic resource demands and static allocations, leaving functions either over-provisioned or under-provisioned. This paper presents Libra, a safe and timely resource harvesting framework for multi-node serverless clusters. Libra makes precise harvesting decisions …

Search For Higgs Boson Decay To A Charm Quark-Antiquark Pair In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S =13 Tev, A. Tumasyan

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

A search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a charm quark-antiquark pair, H → c[], produced in association with a leptonically decaying V (W or Z) boson is presented. The search is performed with proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. Novel charm jet identification and analysis methods using machine learning techniques are employed. The analysis is validated by searching for Z → c[] in VZ events, leading to its first observation at a hadron collider with a significance …

Anomaly Detection In The Molecular Structure Of Gallium Arsenide Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Timothy Roche *, Aihua W. Wood, Philip Cho *, Chancellor Johnstone

Faculty Publications

This paper concerns the development of a machine learning tool to detect anomalies in the molecular structure of Gallium Arsenide. We employ a combination of a CNN and a PCA reconstruction to create the model, using real images taken with an electron microscope in training and testing. The methodology developed allows for the creation of a defect detection model, without any labeled images of defects being required for training. The model performed well on all tests under the established assumptions, allowing for reliable anomaly detection. To the best of our knowledge, such methods are not currently available in the open …

Mechanistic Studies Of Inert Bond Functionalization By Mono And Polynuclear Ni Complexes, Jun Yang Liu Aug 2023

Mechanistic Studies Of Inert Bond Functionalization By Mono And Polynuclear Ni Complexes, Jun Yang Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Studies into the mechanism of 8-aminoquinoline-directed nickel-catalyzed C(sp3)–H arylation with iodoarenes were performed. Paramagnetic complexes such as a high spin four-coordinate disphenoidal Ni([AQpiv]-κN,N)2 (where [AQpiv] = C9NH6NCOtBu) and {[AQpiv]Ni(O2CtBu)}2 undergo the key C–H activation step. The ubiquitous base Na2CO3 is found to hinder catalysis and was rate-limiting; replacement of Na2CO3 with NaOtBu gave improved catalytic turnovers under milder conditions but also occurred without carboxylic acid and phosphine additives. Products of C–H activation supported by PPh3 or PiBu3 were isolated. The C–H functionalization reaction orders with respect to 7·PiBu3, iodoarenes, and phosphines were determined. Hammett analysis using electronically different aryl iodides …

Uncoupling System And Environment Simulation Cells For Fast-Scaling Modeling Of Complex Continuum Embeddings, G. Medrano, E. Bainglass, O. Andreussi

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Continuum solvation models are becoming increasingly relevant in condensed matter simulations, allowing to characterize materials interfaces in the presence of wet electrified environments at a reduced computational cost with respect to all atomistic simulations. However, some challenges with the implementation of these models in plane-wave simulation packages still persists, especially when the goal is to simulate complex and heterogeneous environments. Among these challenges is the computational cost associated with large heterogeneous environments, which in plane-wave simulations has a direct effect on the basis-set size and, as a result, on the cost of the electronic structure calculation. Moreover, the use of …

More Is Better Than One: The Effect Of Ensembling On Deep Learning Performance In Biochemical Prediction Problems, Jacob A. Stern

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents two papers addressing important biochemical prediction challenges. The first paper focuses on accurate protein distance predictions and introduces updates to the ProSPr network. We evaluate its performance in the Critical Assessment of techniques for Protein Structure Prediction (CASP14) competition, investigating its accuracy dependence on sequence length and multiple sequence alignment depth. The ProSPr network, an ensemble of three convolutional neural networks (CNNs), demonstrates superior performance compared to individual networks. The second paper addresses the issue of accurate ligand ranking in virtual screening for drug discovery. We propose MILCDock, a machine learning consensus docking tool that leverages predictions …

Drivers And Dynamics Of Phytoplankton Communities And Harmful Algal Blooms In Mountain Lakes, Lara Stephanie Jansen Aug 2023

Drivers And Dynamics Of Phytoplankton Communities And Harmful Algal Blooms In Mountain Lakes, Lara Stephanie Jansen

Dissertations and Theses

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms (cyanoHABs) are a complex and widespread disturbance in freshwater water bodies, impacting water quality for wildlife and human populations. While cyanobacteria often bloom in warm lakes impacted by human development like agriculture, blooms are increasingly reported in cooler waters with limited development in the surrounding watershed. As much of cyanoHAB research has focused on lakes in highly developed watersheds, the understanding of factors leading to cyanobacteria dominance and blooms in the absence of major development remains limited. Mountain lakes can serve as ideal systems to study bloom-forming cyanobacteria in watersheds with minimal development. In addition, mountain lakes …

Representing Quantum Spins In Different Coordinate Systems For Modelling Rigid Body Orientation, Nadjet Zioui, Aicha Mahmoudi, Mohamed Tadjine

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Various methods for representing the spatial orientation and rotation of objects are presented and compared with the quantum bit state representation. By contrasting spherical, Euler angle, quaternion, and quantum spin coordinate systems, this work highlights important concepts regarding the rotation axis of the X gate. Several ambiguities and incomplete definitions associated with the qubit state representation are discussed, such as the spin around the qubit itself and the explanation of the considered rotation angles and signs. A mathematical analysis of the physical meaning of each eigenstate is provided along with a new comprehensive and meaningful YPR-based 3D representation of a …

Improving The Burt’S Sensitivity Using Noise Calibration Unit Via Crab Nebula Observations, Uday E. Jallod, Lana T. Ali, Hareth S. Mahdi, Kamal M. Abood

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Radio observations from astronomical sources like supernovae became one the most important sources of information about the physical properties of those objects. However, such radio observations are affected by various types of noise such as those from sky, background, receiver, and the system itself. Therefore, it is essential to eliminate or reduce these undesired noise from the signals in order to ensure accurate measurements and analysis of radio observations. One of the most commonly used methods for reducing the noise is to use a noise calibrator. In this study, the 3-m Baghdad University Radio Telescope (BURT) has been used to …

Proposing A Measure Of Ethicality For Humans And Ai, Alejandro Jorge Napolitano Jawerbaum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Smarter people or intelligent machines are able to make more accurate inferences about their environment and other agents more efficiently than less intelligent agents. Formally: ‘Intelligence measures an agent’s ability to achieve goals in a wide range of environments.’ (Legg, 2008)

In this dissertation we extend this definition to include ethical behaviour and we will offer a mathematical formalism and a way to estimate how ethical an action is or will be, both for a human and for a computer, by calculating the expected values of random variables. Formally, we propose the following measure of ethicality, which is computable, or …

Examining The Effectiveness Of Using Point-Of-View Video Modeling On Mathematics Improvement In Students With Learning Disabilities In Saudi Arabia, Tirad Alsaluli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Video Modeling (VM) is one of the most widely used approaches by researchers to improve many skills, such as academic skills in students with Learning Disabilities (LD; Boon et al., 2020). As the incidence rate of individuals with LD in Saudi Arabia increase (Almedlij & Rubinstein-Ávila, 2018), the need for evidence-based math interventions focused on the math development of individuals with LD also increases. Although VM is recognized as an Evidence-based Practice (EBPs), a limited number of studies have implemented VM as an intervention to improve mathematic skills. Implementing VM as a math intervention strategy would explore its effects on …

Fossil fuels generate the majority of the electricity in the United States and generate pollutants that negatively affect public and environmental health. Renewable energy projects serve as an opportunity for low-pollution and low-carbon electricity; small-scale projects, such as vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs), provide opportunities for generation in urban areas close to consumers. Researchers collected wind speed and directional data from a potential turbine installation site at Duquesne University to better demonstrate the potential benefits in an urban university location. The data was used in a life cycle assessment framework and a social review to better understand the value of …

Simultaneous Values Of The Totient Function, Nelson Carella Aug 2023

Simultaneous Values Of The Totient Function, Nelson Carella

Publications and Research

A pair of integers $n$ and $n+k$ is a simultaneous solution of an arithmetic function $f:\mathbb{N}\longrightarrow \mathbb{R}$ if $f(n)=f(n+k)$, where $k\ne0$ is a fixed integer. This article shows that the totient function has infinitely many simultaneous solutions. In particular, $\varphi(n)=\varphi(n+2)$ infinitely often as $n\to\infty$.

Modifying The Composition Of A High Temperature Superconductor, Drue Lubanski Aug 2023

Modifying The Composition Of A High Temperature Superconductor, Drue Lubanski

The purpose of this research was to recreate a known superconductor, YBa2Cu3Ox, and modify it in an attempt to raise its transition temperature. A superconductor is any material that excludes magnetic flux from its interior when at a temperature below its transition temperature. A “high temperature” superconductor refers to material that shows superconductivity at or above the temperature of liquid nitrogen temperatures (77.15K).

Here we were successful in reproducing the original YBa2Cu3Ox and measuring its critical temperature; However, our efforts at raising the transition temperature have, as of yet, …

Effectiveness Of 2016 Watershed Protection Plan On Bacteria And Nutrient Concentration Loads In The Attoyac Bayou Watershed, Jack Henson Aug 2023

Effectiveness Of 2016 Watershed Protection Plan On Bacteria And Nutrient Concentration Loads In The Attoyac Bayou Watershed, Jack Henson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 2004, bacteria and nutrient sampling on the Attoyac Bayou Watershed discovered elevated concentrations of E. coli on five of the main channels key tributary streams. The Attoyac Bayou was then listed on the Texas 303d list of impaired waterbodies and further research was conducted to identify the main sources of contamination in the waterbody. In 2016, the Attoyac Bayou Watershed Plan (WPP) was developed to implement best management practices (BMPs) that would decrease bacteria and nutrient concentrations in the watershed. Educational outreach programs, on-site-sewage facility repair, and livestock management were some of the strategies suggested by the protection plan …

Bioinformatic Analysis Of The Interaction Of Evc And Evc2 Proteins, Md Atikul Islam Mamun Aug 2023

Bioinformatic Analysis Of The Interaction Of Evc And Evc2 Proteins, Md Atikul Islam Mamun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Protein to protein interactions are significant to various biological processes, functioning, and the regulation of cells and organisms. Proteins perform essential cellular tasks and often work together in complexes, enabling specific functions like enzymatic activity, signal transduction, DNA replication, and cell division. These interactions are important in signaling pathways, allowing proteins to interact sequentially, leading to specific cellular responses. Some proteins rely on chaperones to fold correctly, and protein to protein interactions enhance stability, preventing degradation.

Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine discovered that EvC syndrome is related to a malfunction in the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway. They found …

Design Of Stormwater Bmps For Surface And Groundwater Protection Based On Site-Scale Soil Properties: Phase I, Kelly Kibler, Lisa Chambers, Melanie Beazley Aug 2023

Design Of Stormwater Bmps For Surface And Groundwater Protection Based On Site-Scale Soil Properties: Phase I, Kelly Kibler, Lisa Chambers, Melanie Beazley

Florida DOT

Much of Earth’s nutrient cycling takes place in soils. Characteristics of soils control physical, chemical, and biological processes that determine rates of nutrient fluxes, storage, or transformation. As remediation of excess nutrients in stormwater runoff is one function of stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs), the soil profile constitutes one of the most important factors of BMP design. Variation observed in BMP effectiveness (e.g., why one BMP design works effectively in one place and not another) can often be explained by variations in the soil profile, either through direct means or by a soil’s influence on hydraulics of stormwater flow through …

Assessment Of Changes Of Complex Shoreline From Medium‑Resolution Satellite Imagery, Nikolay P. Nezlin, Julie Herman, Jonathan Hodge, Stephen Sagar, Robbi Bishop-Taylor, Guangming Zheng, John M. Digiacomo

VIMS Articles

The imagery collected by medium-resolution earth-observing satellites is a powerful and cost-effective tool for the quantitative assessment of shoreline dynamics for water bodies of different spatial scales. In this study, we utilize imagery collected in 1984–2021 on the Middle Peninsula, Virginia, bordering the Chesapeake Bay, USA, by medium-resolution (10–30 m) satellites Landsat-5/7/8 and Sentinel-2A/B. The data was managed in the Earth Analytics Interoperability Lab (EAIL) Data Cube built and configured by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO, Australia and Chile). The assessments of shoreline change demonstrate adequate agreement with assessments based on aerial photography collected during 1937–2009 by …

Can Gulf Ribbed Mussels Enhance Coastal Restoration Projects In A Future With Climate Change?, Skylar Liner

LSU Master's Theses

Living shorelines present one restoration approach using biotic elements (via ecosystem engineers) to stabilize shorelines and increase valuable habitat. Gulf ribbed mussels (Geukensia granosissima) are important ecosystem engineers within brackish and salt marshes in the northern Gulf of Mexico, and can increase nutrient availability, enhance marsh vegetation production, and potentially improve shoreline stability. It is unknown whether mussels will maintain these functions as future climate change predicts increases in temperature and water level, which may exceed the mussel’s tolerance. A field survey conducted during the summer of 2022 identified the daily maximum temperature at the marsh surface, where mussels naturally …

Comparing Elevator Strategies For A Parking Lot, Naveed Arafat Aug 2023

Comparing Elevator Strategies For A Parking Lot, Naveed Arafat

Major Papers

In this paper, we compare elevator strategies for a parking garage. It is assumed that the parking garage has several floors and there is an elevator which can stop on each floor. We begin by considering 4 strategies detailed in page 23. For each strategy, we loop the program 100 times, and get 100 mean values for wait times. Welch's test confirms highly significant differences among the 4 strategies. Repeating the analysis multiple times we see that the best of the 4 strategies is strategy 2, which places the elevator on floor 2 (the median floor) after use.
