Development Of An On-Line Computer System For Cyclic Voltammetry Studies, Tai-Lee Leo Huo

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

An Apple II Plus microcomputer was interfaced to a PAR 174A Polarographic Analyser, an HP 7O4OA X-Y recorder and a three-electrode system. This on-line computer system was applied to Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) studies. The interfacing involved both hardware and software development. Various hardware components were used to amplify and transmit the analog signal both going into the computer and coming from the computer. Software programs were written for staircase waveform generation, data acquisition, and plotting the voltammograms obtained.

A package was designed for CV experiments to be used by the students in the instrumental analysis laboratory. This package contains several …

The Apparent Dissociation Constants Of Carbonic Acid In Low Salinity Waters, Ching-Hui Hsu Jul 1985

The Apparent Dissociation Constants Of Carbonic Acid In Low Salinity Waters, Ching-Hui Hsu

OES Theses and Dissertations

The first and second apparent dissociation constants of carbonic acid in artificial seawater and diluted artificial seawater, K1 ' and K2 1 were determined at selected combinations of temperatures and salinities between 2 to 30° C and 0 to 35 o/oo with special attentions to waters with salinities below 20 o/oo at atmospheric pressure by measuring K1 ' and the product of K1 ' and K2.

The results can be expressed as functions of temperature and salinity by the following equations, pK1 '=3360.206T-1 +0. 033331 T-14.8303-0.09633x (Cl1/2) pK2 '=14911.671 …

Predicting The Self-Heating Potential Of Coal, Seyed Mohammad Fatemi-Badi Jul 1985

Predicting The Self-Heating Potential Of Coal, Seyed Mohammad Fatemi-Badi

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Self-heating in coal has been studied for well over one hundred years, yet there is no accurate or reliable method for predicting the potential of certain coals to undergo self-heating. Fires caused by self-heating, and eventually spontaneous combustion, have occurred in the high wall of surface mines, in underground mines, in coal stockpiles, and on trains, barges and ships. Self-heating in coal is brought about through a complex interplay of conditions depending on the specific properties of the coal as well as many external factors involved in the mining and handling of coal.

In a study supported by the United …

Hydrogenation Of Nitro Compounds To Amines Using Polymer Bound Catalysts, Eduardo Baralt Jul 1985

Hydrogenation Of Nitro Compounds To Amines Using Polymer Bound Catalysts, Eduardo Baralt

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A polymer bound catalyst is a relatively new type of catalyst. The basis of polymer bound catalysis lies in the chemical attachment of a homogeneous catalyst to a solid support, in our case, polystyrene. Applications of polymer bound catalysts started in the late 1960’s, and have been used in several types of reactions. In some cases such a catalyst offers a series of advantages over the classical models of catalysis, homogeneous and heterogeneous.

The hydrogenation of various aromatic and aliphatic nitro compounds, such as nitro-benzene and 2-nitropropane, were performed successfully. The hydrogenation activity in most cases was high, and in …

Effects Of Urbanization On The Quantity And Quality Of Storm Water Runoff Recharging Through Caves Into The Edwards Aquifer, Bexar County, Texas, George Veni Jul 1985

Effects Of Urbanization On The Quantity And Quality Of Storm Water Runoff Recharging Through Caves Into The Edwards Aquifer, Bexar County, Texas, George Veni

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Eighty-nine caves and sinkholes were investigated in the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone in Bexar County, Texas. The study examined their hydrogeologic and topographic origins and distribution, relationships to major fracture traces, quantity of recharge into the aquifer and degree of sensitivity towards degradation of the aquifer’s water quality. Groundwater traces were attempted to determine aquifer flow routes, time of groundwater travel, groundwater volume within conduits, and the aquifer’s capacity for dilution and dispersion of recharged contaminants. Trends in water quality were examined to quantify the volume and variety of contaminants recharged into the aquifer and to determine the effects of …

Analytical Pyrolysis Of Thai Lignites, Naowarat Poolasap

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Samples of four different Thai lignites were utilized to study the effects of ceiling temperature and heating rate on the overall yield and product distribution by the technique of analytical pyrolysis (pyrolysis-gas chromatography). Ceiling temperatures of 450°, 550°, 650°, 750°, 850°, and 950°C, a heating rate of 500°C/sec and pyrolysis intervals of 20 seconds were investigated. The results were reported in terms of percentage high-volatile product and low-volatile product fraction, weight-loss (% by weight), and total yield (counts per milligram). One sample which showed the highest sensitivity to changing ceiling temperature was selected to study the effect of heating rate …

Physical Properties Of Tar Sand Tailings That Influence Their Ability To Sustain Plant Growth, Timothy Cole Jul 1985

Physical Properties Of Tar Sand Tailings That Influence Their Ability To Sustain Plant Growth, Timothy Cole

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The mining of bituminous sandstone rock for the purpose of extracting bitumen has created a need for reclamation. One such mine is located in northern Logan County. Their mining operation involves removing large sections of sandstone, which is impregnated with bitumen, and crushing it to sand-sized material. The sand-sized material is then mixed with organic solvents which extract the bitumen. Once separated, the bitumen is stored for future refinement and the spent sand is stockpiled for later disposal.

The spent sands or waste material are referred to as tar sand tailings. These tailings have particular properties which make reclamation efforts …

The purpose of the study reported here was to estimate future water demand for irrigation, commercial fisheries, and fish and wildlife uses.

Minimal Norm Constrained Interpolation, Larry Dean Irvine Jul 1985

Minimal Norm Constrained Interpolation, Larry Dean Irvine

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

In computational fluid dynamics and in CAD/CAM a physical boundary, usually known only discreetly (say, from a set of measurements), must often be approximated. An acceptable approximation must, of course, preserve the salient features of the data (convexity, concavity, etc.) In this dissertation we compute a smooth interpolant which is locally convex where the data are locally convex and is locally concave where the data are locally concave.

Such an interpolant is found by posing and solving a minimization problem. The solution is a piecewise cubic polynomial. We actually solve this problem indirectly by using the Peano kernel theorem to …

Observation Of H/E Aharonov-Bohm Oscillations In Normal-Metal Rings, Richard A. Webb, S. Washburn, C. P. Umbach, R. B. Laibowitz Jun 1985

Observation Of H/E Aharonov-Bohm Oscillations In Normal-Metal Rings, Richard A. Webb, S. Washburn, C. P. Umbach, R. B. Laibowitz

Faculty Publications

Magnetoresistance oscillations periodic with respect to the flux h/e have been observed in submicron-diameter Au rings, along with weaker h/2e oscillations. The h/e oscillations persist to very large magnetic fields. The background structure in the magnetoresistance was not symmetric about zero field. The temperature dependence of both the amplitude of the oscillations and the background are consistent with the recent theory by Stone.

Effects Of Dissipation And Temperature On Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling, S. Washburn, Richard A. Webb, R. F. Voss, S. M. Faris

Faculty Publications

Measurements of the tunneling rate Γ out of the zero-voltage state for several Nb edge junctions with differing shunt capacitances are described. At zero temperature, increasing the shunt capacitance lowers Γ in agreement with dissipative calculations of the macroscopic-quantum-tunneling rate. As temperature increases, ln[Γ(T)/Γ(0)]∝T2 as recently predicted.

The g-factor of the level in 97Zr has been measured using the time-differential perturbed angular correlation method. The resultant g-factor, g=+0.39(4) is consistent with the simple shell model prediction for a if neutron, assuming gs=gsfree. This is in contrastrast to the measured in 115Sn, 121Te, 125,127Xe where consistency is obtained with theoretical calculation by assuming gs≈0.7 gsfree and is seen as another confirmation of quasi-shell closure at 96Zr.

Hillsborough Bay Macroalgae Study Final Report, Mangrove Systems, Inc. Jun 1985

Hillsborough Bay Macroalgae Study Final Report, Mangrove Systems, Inc.

Reports

Hillsborough Bay. the northeastern portion of the Tampa Bay estuarine system (Fig. 1) has long suffered from the problems caused by industry and urbanization (Simon 1974). The macroalgal community of this estuary has been identified as a source of nuisance odor problems for many years. A study by the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration (FWPCA 1969) indicated that these problems resulted from degraded water quality (primarily eutrophication) which led to large populations of one or two species of marine red algae (Gracilaria spp.). Seasonal freshwater input resulted in the death and decay of these quantities of algae, producing the odor …

Dynamics Of Clastic Sedimentation And Watershed Evolution Within A Low-Relief Karst Drainage Basin, Mammoth Cave Region, Kentucky, John D. Pickle Jun 1985

Dynamics Of Clastic Sedimentation And Watershed Evolution Within A Low-Relief Karst Drainage Basin, Mammoth Cave Region, Kentucky, John D. Pickle

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The hydrology and sedimentology of the Mill Hole drainage basin, a low-relief karst system in the Mammoth Cave Region, Kentucky, depend upon the interactions of surface and groundwater drainages and the distribution of lithologies within the basin. This basin is characterized by sinking streams in the headwaters (Glasgow Uplands) draining into cave rivers beneath the sinkhole-pocked plain (sinkhole plain), which, in turn, flow beneath a sandstone-capped upland (Chester Cuesta) and emerge at base-level springs. Karst windows expose the subterranean drainage within the Chester Cuesta.

Crystalline And Amorphous Feti And Fe2Ti, C.L. Chien, Sy_Hwang Liou Jun 1985

Crystalline And Amorphous Feti And Fe2Ti, C.L. Chien, Sy_Hwang Liou

Sy-Hwang Liou Publications

Amorphous FeTi, Fe2Ti, and their crystalline counterparts are compared by measurements of x-ray diffraction, conductivity, and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. In FeTi one has the unique opportunity to compare a cubic crystal with its amorphous analog. X-ray diffraction and hyperfine interactions indicate no clear correlation between the crystalline and the amorphous states. The electrical conductivity exhibits distinctive behavior for the two states.
