A Geophysical Model Of The Gravity-Magnetic High, Virginia Coastal Plan, Gordon Everett Davison Apr 1985

A Geophysical Model Of The Gravity-Magnetic High, Virginia Coastal Plan, Gordon Everett Davison

OES Theses and Dissertations

The coastal plain province of Virginia is characterized by a coincidental gravity and magnetic high separating Appalachian-trend geophysical signatures to the west from non-Appalachian signatures to the east. Two cross-trend gravity and magnetic profiles, one on the Northern Neck of Virginia and one along Interstate Highway 64, were used to interpret the anomalous high. The profile models suggests that the anomaly is characterized by high-density, variably magnetic, east-dipping (60°) crustal blocks. Further information from well-logs indicate that the anomaly is due to meta-mafic rocks of oceanic origin, flanked by low-density, lower susceptibility, granitic units. This suggests that the anomalous gravity-magnetic …

Foraminiferal Paleoenvironments Of The Eastover Formation (Upper Miocene Virginia), Joann H. Goshorn Apr 1985

Foraminiferal Paleoenvironments Of The Eastover Formation (Upper Miocene Virginia), Joann H. Goshorn

OES Theses and Dissertations

Sixty-two taxa representing 29 genera from 39 foraminiferal sample pairs have been documented and analyzed in a paleoenvironmental study of the Eastover Formation in southeastern Virginia. The Eastover Formation consists of a lower Claremont Manor Member, a silt fine-grained sand and an upper Cobham Bay Member, a shelly fine grained sand. Planktonic specimens were rare and indicated a late Miocene to early Pliocene age for the Eastover Formation. Benthics were used to interpret paleoenvironments by comparison with data from the distribution of Recent foraminifera, species diversity, planktonic to benthic ratios, and sediment analyses. The foraminifera indicate that the Eastover Formation …

Multivalued Maps And Multivalued Differential Equations, K. Deimling Apr 1985

Multivalued Maps And Multivalued Differential Equations, K. Deimling

Mathematics Technical Papers

Everybody meets multivalued maps very early in his mathematical education, as inverses of maps which are not one-to-one, but in elementary lectures the multivalued aspect is usually suppressed by means of elementary tricks or restrictions which make sense for practical purposes; think of [see pdf for notation] which has the inverse[see pdf for notation], from [see pdf for notation] (the subsets of R); or think of a linear operator [see pdf for notation] with kernel [see pdf for notation]; in which case one uses the trick to consider [see pdf for notation], defined by [see pdf for notation] which is …

Statistical Calibration Theory, James John Mckeon Apr 1985

Statistical Calibration Theory, James John Mckeon

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

A calibration method substitutes for measurements, X(,i), that are accurate but impractical or costly, a set of measurements, Y(,i), that are less accurate but simpler or less costly. There are two general types of calibration methods. The classical approach in which once the calibration sample is drawn, the estimates of the X values for a given unit is found without any consideration of the distribution of X values for the other units to be measured. This corresponds best to the literal meaning of the word "calibration". Maximum likelihood estimation is the statistical formulation of the classical approach.

The second approach …

Test Derivation For Cmos Iterative Logic Arrays, Ravi Sharma Apr 1985

Test Derivation For Cmos Iterative Logic Arrays, Ravi Sharma

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Testability criteria for stuck-open (s-op) faults in one-dimensional unilateral iterative logic arrays (ILA) of CMOS combinational cells are considered in this thesis. A functional fault model to represents-op faults i~ an ILA cell is given. The procedure to detect as-op fault needs a pair of test vectors. The first is used to set up the initial conditions required to test the fault and the second is the test which distinguishes between the good and the bad circuit. Based on this approach necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the testability of as-op fault in a CMOS ILA cell. These conditions …

The Synthesis And Evaluation Of A New Analog Of Phencyclidine (Pcp), William H. Johnson Jr. Apr 1985

The Synthesis And Evaluation Of A New Analog Of Phencyclidine (Pcp), William H. Johnson Jr.

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Based on an interpretation of the literature of phencyclidine (PCP) together with an examination of the relevant models or prototype structures, this research has attempted to design and synthesize a rigid analog of the phencyclidine structure. The parent ring systems suggested for this study were the 1-arnino and 2-arninornethyltetralins, 10 and, 12.

Several organic compounds, based on this design, have been prepared by classical examples of reductive alkylation reactions of the corresponding 2-hydroxyciethylene-1-tetralones, 11, and by the condensation and subsequent reductive alkylation of the 1-arninotetralin, 9. These arninomethyltetralones, 28, 29 and 30, together with an example of a substituted 1-arninotetralin, …

An Asymptotic Result In Forced Oscillations Of Pendulum-Type Equations, R. Kannan, R. Ortega

Mathematics Technical Papers

The forced pendulum-type equation is given by [see pdf for notation] where [see pdf for notation] is continuous and T-periodic and p(t) is[see pdf for notation] -periodic. When g(x) = a sin x, a > 0, we obtain the classical pendulum equation. The question of existence of [see pdf for notation] periodic solution of (1.1) for a given p(t) has been studied recently in [1], [3], [5] (cf. [4] for an extensive bibliography). Throughout this paper we denote by [see pdf for notation] the average of [see pdf for notation]. Some of the existence literature obtains sufficient conditions on the magnitudes …

The Effect Of Glaciers On Streamflow Variations, Andrew G. Fountain, Wendell V. Tangborn Apr 1985

The Effect Of Glaciers On Streamflow Variations, Andrew G. Fountain, Wendell V. Tangborn

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The effect of temperate glaciers on runoff variations is examined for the North Cascade Mountains of Washington State. The principal influences of glaciers on streamflow are often unexpected contributions to streamflow volume, a delay of the maximum seasonal flow, and a decrease in annual and monthly variation of runoff. The delay of maximum flow is caused by temporary englacial storage of spring meltwater and by peak meltwater production occurring in midsummer. The englacial storage, for one case, is 54% of the potential May runoff. An algorithm is presented that calculates the coefficient of variation of runoff for any arbitrary glacier …

Lung Cancer Incidence In A Chinese High Background Area — Epidemiological Results And Theoretical Interpretation, Werner Hofmann, Robert Katz, Chunxiang Zhang

Robert Katz Publications

A survey of inhabitant exposures arising from the inhalation of radon and thoron daughters, and lung cancer mortality has been carried out in two adjacent areas in Guangdong province, China, designated as the "high background" and the "control" area. Annual exposure rates are 0.38 WLM/yr in the high background, and 0.16 WLM/yr in the control area, while age-adjusted mortality rates are 2.7 per 105 living people of all ages in the high background, and 2.9 per 105 in the control area. From this data we conclude that we are unable to determine the excess lung cancer rate over normal fluctuations …

Self-Consistent Phases In Topological Particle Theory, Paul Finkler, C. Edward Jones Mar 1985

Self-Consistent Phases In Topological Particle Theory, Paul Finkler, C. Edward Jones

Paul Finkler Papers

To be a self-contained theory, topological particle theory should explain from the basis of its own stated framework of assumptions (nonlinear self-consistency equations, pole factorization, crossing symmetry, and Hermitian analyticity} all the mathematical properties and numerical values of scattering amplitudes. This paper attempts to move the theory in this direction by showing that the phases of the zero-entropy amplitudes in the theory are, in fact, determined by the above framework of assumptions except for trivial ambiguities that appear to have no physical consequences. This extends previous work on this subject and removes the need for certain extra assumptions. Once the …

Derivation Of Discrete Invariances (T, C, And P) And The Connection Between Spin And Statistics In Topological Particle Theory, C. E. Jones, Paul Finkler

Paul Finkler Papers

For purely hadronic processes, the standard connection between spin and statistics as well as separate invariances under charge conjugation, parity, and time reversal are shown to be consequences of self-consistency in topological particle theory.

New Evidence Supporting The Blancan Age Of The Sand And Gravel Sequence Capping The Ash Hollow Formation, Garden, Keith, And Lincoln Counties, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr., James W. Goeke, Michael R. Voorhies

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Sandwiched between the overlying eolian Quaternary loesses and sands and the underlying beds of the Ash Hollow Formation, Ogallala Group, buried beneath the sliver of Cheyenne Tableland in Keith County and adjacent areas of western Nebraska, is a mass of fluvially deposited sand, gravelly sand, and sandy gravel of previously uncertain age. Some authors assigned these sediments to the Ogallala Group, while others have called them either the Broadwater Formation (Blancan), or a combination of the two rock units.

Seasonal Temperature Forecasts As Products Of Antecedent Linear And Spatial Temperature Arrays, Merlin Lawson, Randall S. Cerveny Mar 1985

Seasonal Temperature Forecasts As Products Of Antecedent Linear And Spatial Temperature Arrays, Merlin Lawson, Randall S. Cerveny

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Our objective is to evaluate the potential for extracting the maximum information contained in antecedent temperature patterns that operationally could be used in formulating winter seasonal forecasts in the United States. In particular, examination of the predictability of winter temperatures given autumn temperatures is made using derived contingency tables, discriminant equations of antecedent principal components, and canonical correlation analysis.

Contingency tables were constructed based on tercile classifications of a seventy-five-year dependent record (1895-1969). Testing of an independent data period (1970-78) using these tables produced winter forecasts with no appreciable skill in the aggregate (-0.04). Discriminant analysis derived linear combinations of …

Spring Nitrogen Management For Winter Wheat, John H. Grove Mar 1985

Spring Nitrogen Management For Winter Wheat, John H. Grove

Soil Science News and Views

Wheat producers commonly plan their nitrogen fertilizer management during winter months. The crop begins to break dormancy in many parts of the state in late February and early March and soon begins tillering and growing rapidly if nutrition is adequate. Nitrogen is the nutrient most often required and for which annual costs are the greatest for most wheat growers. Consideration of the following basic principles will help wheat producers improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their nitrogen fertilizer dollars.

Molecular And Electronic Structures Of Metallaspiropentanes, Mark S. Gordon, Philip Boudjouk Mar 1985

Molecular And Electronic Structures Of Metallaspiropentanes, Mark S. Gordon, Philip Boudjouk

Mark S. Gordon

Recent efforts in this laboratory have concentrated on synthesizing metallaspiropentane compounds (I) with M = C, Si, Ge, Sn, Ni, and Zn. To date, the molecule with M = Si and R = methyl has been successfully prepared, 1 while attempts to synthesize the corresponding carbon compound have not reached fruition. This paper presents initial ab initio calculations on the species with M = C and Si and with R = H. Geometries for all species were calculated with the
