Stochastic Estimation Applied To The Land Speed Of Sound Record Attempt By A Rocket Car, David A. Reinholz Dec 1983

Stochastic Estimation Applied To The Land Speed Of Sound Record Attempt By A Rocket Car, David A. Reinholz

Theses and Dissertations

Optimal linear smoothing theory is applied to the data from the Speed of Sound record attempt of a three-wheeled rocket car on 17 December 1979. A forward-backward estimation method is used which employs a seven state forward-running extended Kalman filter and a Meditch-form backward recursive 'fixed-interval' smoothing algorithm. Data for this analysis is supplied by a longitudinal accelerometer mounted on the vehicle and tracking radar measurements of range, azimuth, and elevation. States of interest include two components of vehicle position and velocity, accelerometer time-correlated error, and radar range and azimuth bias errors. Two iterations of the forward-backward smoothing algorithm provide …

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Four experimental filter fields were constructed with built-in monitoring equipment in Nixa soils. These soils contain many chert fragments and a fragipan about 60 cm below the soil surface. The fragipan restricts downward movement of water and is the designlimitingfeature. The four filter fields were: 1. A "standard" filter field, 76 cm deep. The bottom of the trench was in the fragipan. 2. A "modified standard" filter field, 30 cm deep. The bottom of the trench was above the fragipan. 3. A "modified pressure" filter field, 40 cm deep. The bottom of the trench was above the fragipan. In addition, …

Breakdown Of Flavor Conservation In A Monopole Background, V. Parameswaran Nair

Publications and Research

We give a simple derivation of the catalysis of baryon decay and other flavor-changing processes by monopoles. The role of the axial anomaly is clarified. A general current-algebraic argument which clarifies the nature of flavor violation is also given.

Rhode Island's Barrier Beaches: As Assessment Of Their Future, David J. Hampshire Nov 1983

Rhode Island's Barrier Beaches: As Assessment Of Their Future, David J. Hampshire

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The lands and waters of the coastal zone have either been mismanaged or not managed at all since the early settling of the United States. Nowhere is this more evident, perhaps than along the nation's barrier beaches. Rhode Island, while not suffering nearly from the degree of development on its barrier beaches as other states, is no exception. Economic pressures brought to bear have forced federal, state, and local governments to grapple extensively with this issue. The need for the preservation of barrier beaches in their natural state cannot be overstated and is recognized by all levels of government. This …

The Qualog User’S Manual (Preliminary Version), Anne Shelly, Ernest Sibert

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

In qualitative research, data analysis is the stage of organizing, interpreting, synthesizing, conceptualizing, and reporting information collected over a period of time and by various means. The researcher organizes the information into “manageable units”, searches for recurring topics and patterns of words or phrases, decides on a focus, and refines the thesis or theme so that it accounts for supporting and negative evidence (Bogdan and Biklen, 1982). The major tasks of data analysis include organizing the data, developing categories around patterns or recurring pieces of information, discovering and testing the strength of relationships among categories, and developing a theme or …

Specification Of Synchronizing Processes, Krithivasan Ramamritham, Robert M. Keller Nov 1983

Specification Of Synchronizing Processes, Krithivasan Ramamritham, Robert M. Keller

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The formalism of temporal logic has been suggested to be an appropriate tool for expressing the semantics of concurrent programs. This paper is concerned with the application of temporal logic to the specification of factors affecting the synchronization of concurrent processes. Towards this end, we first introduce a model for synchronization and axiomatize its behavior. SYSL, a very high-level language for specifying synchronization properties, is then described. It is designed using the primitives of temporal logic and features constructs to express properties that affect synchronization in a fairly natural and modular fashion. Since the statements in the language have intuitive …

Returning Pik Land To Grain Production, Wilbur W. Frye Nov 1983

Returning Pik Land To Grain Production, Wilbur W. Frye

Soil Science News and Views

With the end of the 1983 PIK program, much of the acreage that was in the program will be returned to grain production. Farmers who planted cover crops on their PIK fields in 1983 and who plan to return them to grain production in 1984 will be faced with deciding whether to use no-tillage or conventional tillage. The cover crops will provide mulch for no-tillage crops which may be an asset but can contribute to problems as well. Also, weed problems may be worse on PIK land and more difficult to control with no-tillage than with conventional tillage. The decision …

Ware River Intensive Watershed Study - Project Summary, Gary F. Anderson, Cindy Bosco, Bruce Neilson

Reports

The Ware River Intensive Watershed Study includes examinations of runoff from small catchments, instream transport of runoff, and their impacts on estuarine water quality. Runoff quantity and quality were monitored for row crop, residential and forested lands in the Ware basin for the period of October 1979 to July 1981. Loading rates have been calculated for both baseflow and stormflow contributions at each study site.

Electron Detachment For H-(D-) In Collisions With Ne, T. S. Wang, John B. Delos Nov 1983

Electron Detachment For H-(D-) In Collisions With Ne, T. S. Wang, John B. Delos

Arts & Sciences Articles

Total cross sections for electron detachment in collisions of H and D with Ne are calculated, using a model based on a first‐order solution to close‐coupled equations. Quantities needed for the calculation are the energy gap and the coupling between bound and free states. The energy gap is taken from previous calculations and the coupling is assumed to be of exponential form, with parameters adjusted to fit experimental data. Special examination is made of isotope effects in the cross sections.

Ionic-Configuration-Interaction Effects On Xe 5S-Subshell Photoionization Processes, Göran Wendin, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Recent measurements of the 5s-subshell photoelectron angular distribution of xenon have found larger values for the asymmetry parameter β in the region of the 5s-subshell cross-section minimum than predicted by relativistic random-phase-approximation calculations. Final-state ionic configuration interaction is adduced as a possible explanation for this and other discrepancies.

Robotic Realities: Near Term Prospects And Problems, Robert U. Ayres, Steven M. Miller Nov 1983

Robotic Realities: Near Term Prospects And Problems, Robert U. Ayres, Steven M. Miller

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Industrial robots are automation, but with a difference. Other machine tools are extensions of human capabilities, while robots are seen mainly as substitutes for human workers. Robots will find most of their industrial applications during the next decade or two in the metal-working sectors, where they will begin to displace semiskilled machine operatives in medium to large batch production operations. They cannot substitute for skilled machinists or other workers doing nonroutine jobs, or specialized, dedicated hard automation used in mass production. The current generation of robots, lacking sensory data processing and interpretation capabilities, can potentially replace up to 1.3 million …

The Role Of Nonreal Eigenvalues In The Identification Of Cycles In A Compartmental System, Jerome Eisenfeld, S. M. Grundy, W. F. Beltz Nov 1983

The Role Of Nonreal Eigenvalues In The Identification Of Cycles In A Compartmental System, Jerome Eisenfeld, S. M. Grundy, W. F. Beltz

Mathematics Technical Papers

The paper concerns the relationship between the cycles in the graph of a compartmental system and the modes of the impulse response function associated with an input-output experiment. Suppose that there is at least one oscillatory mode, [see pdf for notation]. Let [see pdf for notation] be the slowest mode. The main result is that the system contains a cycle of length three or longer and that the length of the longest cycle is at least [see pdf for notation]. The paper also deals with the problem of estimating cycle length from discrete data.

Search For Fractional Charges Produced In Heavy-Ion Collisions At 1.9 Gev/Nucleon, Michael A. Lindgren, David C. Joyce, Peter C. Abrams, Roger W. Bland, Robert T. Johnson, Tanya D. Knoop, Maureen H. Savage, Marion H. Scholz, Betty A. Young, Christopher L. Hodges, Alan A. Hahn, Gordon L. Shaw, Klaus S. Lackner, Howel G. Pugh, Richard Slansky

Physics

An experiment was performed to capture fractionally charged particles produced in heavy-ion collisions and to concentrate them in samples suitable for analysis by various techniques. Two of the samples so produced have been searched, with use of an automated version of Millikan's oil-drop apparatus. The beam was 56Fe at 1.9 GeV/nucleon, incident on a lead target. Less than one fractional charge per 1.0× 104 Fe-Pb collisions was found to be produced, and, with further assumptions, less than one per 2.0× 106 collisions.

Active-Coupling Mixing Times For A Stirred Binary Liquid, Nalini Easwar, James V. Maher, D. J. Pine, W. I. Goldburg

Physics: Faculty Publications

Mixing times measured for a stirred critical binary liquid mixture are seen to vary dramatically with Reynolds number, Prandtl number, and the initial value of the order parameter. These variations are far too large to be explained by passive-mixing calculations; they also differ in significant respects from the active-mixing predictions of Ruiz and Nelson.

Fertilization Management In Double Cropping, John H. Grove Oct 1983

Fertilization Management In Double Cropping, John H. Grove

Soil Science News and Views

Double crop systems are being widely adopted by grain and silage producers in Kentucky. The wheat-soybean grain intensive system accounts for nearly 750,000 acres of cropland in the state each year. Alternative silage systems for beef and/or dairy producers involve a fall seeded small grain (wheat, barley, triticale) that is harvested at an immature stage of growth. Immediately afterward a crop for silage (corn, grain sorghum) or grain (soybean, grain sorghum) is planted. When reduced and no-tillage management practices are used the timeliness of planting is improved and losses of surface soil moisture are minimized as the second crop starts …

Decomposition Rates, Synthesis, And Spectral Properties Of A Series Of Alkyl Hyponitrites, Craig A. Ogle, Steve W. Martin, Michael P. Dziobak, Marek W. Urban, G. David Mendenhall

Steve W. Martin

A number of trans-alkyl hyponitrites (RON=NOR) were synthesized and characterized. At 66.1 f 0.1 "C in isooctane and with millimolar to micromolar concentrations first-order kinetics were observed with half-lives (min) of 12.8 f 0.2 (CHJ, 32.3 f 1.1 (2-C3H7), 15.0 1 0.3 (cyclohexyl), 25.2 i 1.2 (tert-butyl), 18.3 f 0.3 (tert-pentyl), 3.0 f 0.1 (benzyl), 11.2 f 0.5 (2-phenylethyl), and 5.5 f 0.3 (1-phenylethyl). The rate constants were concentration independent and showed little change with changes in solvent polarity or viscosity. Ultraviolet, magnetic resonance, infrared, and mass spectra for the new hyponitrites are reported. Most of the hyponitrites were highly …

Convexity Of The Free Energy In Some Real-Space Renormalization-Group Approximations, Miron Kaufman, Robert B. Griffiths Oct 1983

Convexity Of The Free Energy In Some Real-Space Renormalization-Group Approximations, Miron Kaufman, Robert B. Griffiths

Miron Kaufman

Whereas the free energy for a spin system in a hierarchical lattice will be convex as a function of appropriate parameters (and thus the heat capacity positive, etc.), the same need not be true of a corresponding approximate real-space renormalization-group method applied to a Bravais lattice. Some examples are given which illustrate this point.
