Ecology Of The Black-Footed Ferret And The Black-Tailed Prairie Dog, Robert G. Sheets
Ecology Of The Black-Footed Ferret And The Black-Tailed Prairie Dog, Robert G. Sheets
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research involving the black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) and black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) was conducted during 1968 and 1969. Eighteen prairie dog burrows were excavated in 1968 and 1969. Burrow systems ranged from 13 to 109 feet long and 3 to 14 feet deep. Fifteen of the burrows exhibited dome-shaped entrances leading to a gradually descending passageway which made an abrupt vertical ascent to a crater-shaped entrance. Nest chambers were found in 6 burrows. Earthen plugs created by prairie dogs in burrows after ferret departure ranged from 9 to 33 feet long. Eighty-two ferret scats were recovered. Animal remains found …

Pheasant Use And Waterfowl Production On State And Private Lands, Charles R. Elliott
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) use on state-owned game production areas was compared to that on privately-owned areas in east-central South Dakota. Four 80-acre and four 160-acre tracts of state lands were paired with private areas of the same size having the same amount of wetland and were selected from aerial photographs taken before the purchase of the state-owned areas. None of four nests were successful on private areas in 1968 and three of five nests were successful on game production areas. In 1969 three of 19 nests were successful on private areas and 10 of 21 nests were successful on …

Feeding Of Black Bullheads Ictalurus Melas (Rafinesque) In Experimental Cages, Kay R. Hill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Black bullheads, Ictalurus melas (Rafinesque), were grown experimentally from July 25, 1969, through October 21, 1969. The fish, collected from Lake Poinsett, were grown in five cages each with a water volume of 2.6 m³ and five cages each with a volume of 3.86 m³. The larger cages contained nearly 60 percent of the total 323 m³ of water volume in the cages. No significant difference in fish growth between the two cage sizes were observed. Fish in large cages gained 204.4 Kg and were fed 1550.8 Kg of food, for a food conversion of 6.60. Fish in smaller cages …

Investigation Of The Alpha-Sub-Gamma Phase In Alnico 6, Cortez Samuel
Investigation Of The Alpha-Sub-Gamma Phase In Alnico 6, Cortez Samuel
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this research project was to study the αᵧ phase in Alnico 6. Other phases were studies for comparison. Also the effect of an applied magnetic field on the formation of the αᵧ phase was investigated.
Three single crystals of Alnico 6 were heat treated for one hour—one at 1250°C, one at 1000°C, and one at 800°C—and water-quenched. The microstructure of each sample was observed with the optical microscope, and X-ray diffraction patterns were taken to determine the crystal structure of the phases present.
Several single crystal samples of Alnico 6 were heat treated at 1000°C and furnace-cooled. …
Sheep : Experimental Basis For Urea Feeding Recommendations, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Sheep : Experimental Basis For Urea Feeding Recommendations, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Recent scientific reviews have concluded that in spite of the great number of experimental observations recorded throughout the world there is no evidence yet to prove that urea can be used profitably for sheep on low quality roughages in genuine grazing conditions.
An experiment is in progress at Merredin Research Station this season, especially designed to demonstrate a response to urea by sheep grazing wheat stubbles, if such a response is possible.
Emergency Chlorination Of Farm Water Supplies, H C. Hughes
Emergency Chlorination Of Farm Water Supplies, H C. Hughes
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
TOWARDS the end of summer (and especially in a drought) the risk of water in dams, soaks, wells or tanks becoming polluted is increased.
Bore water is much less likely to be affected unless the bore is poorly sited near a farm building, such as a shearing or milking shed, a pig pen, or a septic tank system.
Superphosphate Deficiency Raises Pasture Oestrogens, H G. Neil, T. Marshall
Superphosphate Deficiency Raises Pasture Oestrogens, H G. Neil, T. Marshall
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
A recent field experiment on established pastures at Esperance Downs Research Station has demonstrated a relationship between superphosphate application, pasture oestrogens and oestrogenic response in sheep.
Results of the experiment indicate that on phosphate deficient soils carrying oestrogenic clovers, the levels of oestrogenic materials in the pasture are increased if superphosphate applications are below those recommended for healthy pasture growth.
Dry Season In The Eastern And North-Eastern Wheatbelt, George Henry Burvill
Dry Season In The Eastern And North-Eastern Wheatbelt, George Henry Burvill
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The drought of 1969 ended an 11-year run of good seasons in the eastern and north-eastern wheatbelt. Good years usually have above average rainfall; wheat yields and pasture growth are greatly reduced if rains are well below average. Eighty years records show that half the years must be expected to be below average and about one-third could be well below. This area produces one-third of the State's wheat and has 9 per cent, of its sheep.

A Comparative Study Of Nickel Sulphide Deposits Within The Area Of The Canadian Shield, Robert G. Kreiner
A Comparative Study Of Nickel Sulphide Deposits Within The Area Of The Canadian Shield, Robert G. Kreiner
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
In order to plan the future development of the Canadian Shield within a conceptual framework as suggested by the Mid-Canada Corridor concept, both the presently developed and potential, natural resources of this area need to be evaluated for knowledgeable development and management. To this purpose, various areas of nickel sulphide deposits within the area of the Canadian Shield have been studied with the object of determining similar sequences of intrusive events and their spatial relationships.
Within the Sudbury area, Ontario, five periods of intrusive activity have been recognized, each period characterized by an initial intrusion of acidic composition, followed in …

St. Louis Limestone, Stratigraphy And Petrography, Near Its Type Locality, Abd El-Aziz El-Hady A. Borahay
Masters Theses
"The St. Louis Limestone of the Upper Meramecian Series, Mississippian System, is typically lithographic, light-to light-olive gray in color, dense, and fractures conchoidally. It is brecciated, especially in the lower part, and contains some chert nodules. Oolites are present close to the top of the formation. The Salem-St. Louis contact is placed at the base of the lowest breccia zone and the top of Salem is characterized by crystalline quartz and abundance of chert nodules. The appearance of typical Ste. Genevieve oolites with sand-size quartz grains indicates the St. Louis-Ste. Genevieve contact. The St. Louis Limestone is characterized by dominance …

SUBTERRANEAN CLOVER INOCULATION EXPERIMENTS Badgingarra and Newdegate Comparisons between Rhizobium trifolii strain WU290 and possible replacement strains were continued. The work was conducted for the following reasons 1. The need for information on "back-up" strains particularly since the inoculant manufacturers had experienced difficulty in producing high-count peat cultures of WU290. 2. Strain CC2480a had proved very satisfactory in the Eastern States. Although it did not show up to advantage under our conditions in 1968,further testing was indicated. 3. The need for information on inoculation needs on old land.

A Time Series From The Beach Environment-Ii, Wyman Harrison, L. E. Fausak
Reports
This work is the second in a continuing series of time-series data reports to be published periodically as a result of field investigations in the beach-ocean-atmosphere system by Dr. Wyman Harrison and his associates. The first report was published as Technical Memorandum ERLTM-AOL 1 of ESSA's Atlantic Oceanographic Laboratories. This series of reports will allow other researchers to test hypotheses or to experiment with analytical procedures without going through the expensive and somewhat arduous task of obtaining the data.
Papain-Papaya Protein Interactions : Resistance Of Papaya Protein To Proteolytic Digestion By Papain, John Leonard Rudy
Papain-Papaya Protein Interactions : Resistance Of Papaya Protein To Proteolytic Digestion By Papain, John Leonard Rudy
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The proteolytic actjvity of papain was investigated with respect to its action on both natural substrates (native papaya protein and bovine serum albumin) and artificial synthetic substrate (benzoyl~l-arginine ethyl ester). Following removal of 30 percent and 40 percent of the amino acid residues from the amine terminus, the activity of the degraded papain was determined with respect to the above substrates, and compared to the activity of the intact papain molecule.
Native papaya protein showed resistance to digestion by both intact papain and 30 percent 'degraded papain. This resistance to digestion persisted for time periods ranging from three to six …
The Beach Water Table As A Response Variable Of The Beach-Ocean-Atmosphere System, Leland Edward Fausak
The Beach Water Table As A Response Variable Of The Beach-Ocean-Atmosphere System, Leland Edward Fausak
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Fluctuations of the water table in a marine beach over a rising half-tide cycle were investigated as a function of variations in local still water level, swash runup distance, distance of a sampling station from the shoreline, and atmospheric pressure. The data were taken from a 30-day time series of observations of environmental variables taken at Virginia Beach, Virginia, during August and September, 1969. Sequential linear multiple regression analyses were used to rank the process variables in order of importance in each of 13 water-table monitoring wells spaced along a transect transverse to the shoreline . Results showed that tidal …
Bacterial Absorption On Soils--Thermodynamics, David W. Hendricks, Frederick J. Post, Deorao R. Khairnar, Jerome J. Jurinak
Bacterial Absorption On Soils--Thermodynamics, David W. Hendricks, Frederick J. Post, Deorao R. Khairnar, Jerome J. Jurinak
Reports
Laboratory studies on the adsorption of bacteria onto soils and activated carbon were undertaken to evaluate the role of the process in removal of bacteria from groundwater. It was hypothesized that removal of bacteria from water passing through soil would be primarily due to adsorption in which case the bacteria would behave in a manner similar to colloidal particles or chemical molecules. The basic kinetics of uptake of Staphylococcus aureus were determined on activated carbon, a highly adsorbing material chemically speaking. Once the technique was worked out and adsorption demonstrated to take place, sand, clay, and Mendon silt loam were …

The Function Of Social Behavior In Water Resource Development , Wade H. Andrews, Dennis C. Geertsen
The Function Of Social Behavior In Water Resource Development , Wade H. Andrews, Dennis C. Geertsen
Reports
Preface: This report is an analysis of a social survey of the middle and lower Bear River Basin of southeastern Idaho and northern Utah concerning the problem of water resource development in a semiarid region of the Western United States. The survey part of the study, carried out in the summer of 1966, dealt with both general social factors and a specific proposal made by the Bureau of Reclamation for developing water resources of the Bear River. In many respects this proposal and the resulting behavior is typical of other western river basin projects, in some other ways, however, it …
