Reassessment Of The Rates At Which Oil From Natural Sources Enters The Marine Environment, Keith A. Kvenvolden, John W. Harbaugh Jan 1983

Reassessment Of The Rates At Which Oil From Natural Sources Enters The Marine Environment, Keith A. Kvenvolden, John W. Harbaugh

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Previous estimates of the world-wide input of oil to the marine environment by natural seeps ranged from 0 ·2 to 6 ·0 million (metric) tonnes per year with a 'best estimate' of 0 ·6 million tonnes per year. Based on considerations of the availability of oil for seepage from the world's known and assumed oil resources, we believe that the world-wide natural oil seepage over geological time should be revised to about 0 ·2 million tonnes per ),ear with a range upward or downward of a factor of ten leading to estimates between 0 ·02 and 2 million tonnes per …

Environmental Correlates Of Hermatypic Coral (Montastrea Annularis) Growth On The East Flower Gardens Bank, Northwest Gulf Of Mexico, Richard E. Dodge, Judith C. Lang Jan 1983

Environmental Correlates Of Hermatypic Coral (Montastrea Annularis) Growth On The East Flower Gardens Bank, Northwest Gulf Of Mexico, Richard E. Dodge, Judith C. Lang

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Time series of annual linear growth increments from 12 Montastrea annularis (E. and S.) collected at the East Flower Gardens Bank reef in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico have a common pattern. This is best expressed in an index master chronology (average by year of the annual percentage deviations from the mean of each coral.)

Comparisons with time series of environmental data indicate that coral extension rates vary positively with seasonal (February through May - 4 months) surface water temperature and negatively with annual discharge of the Atchafalaya River. We propose that secular variations of water temperature and other parameters …

Curidia Debrogania, A New Genus And Species Of Amphipod (Crustacea: Ochlesidae) From The Barrier Reefs Of Belize, Central America, James Darwin Thomas

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

The family Ochlesidae is amended to include the new genus Curidia, which differs from all other members by possessing maxiIIipedal palps. Curidia debrogania is described and compared to other genera and species within the family Ochlesidae.

Curidia debrogania is plesiomorphic by possession of maxillipedal palps, suggesting this member of the small, cryptic family might have originated in the tropical Western Atlantic. Distribution records and ecological notes are included.

Diagenesis Of Miocene Biogenic Sediments In Lost Hills Oil Field, San Joaquin Basin, California, Michael A. Kruge Jan 1983

Diagenesis Of Miocene Biogenic Sediments In Lost Hills Oil Field, San Joaquin Basin, California, Michael A. Kruge

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Major portions of the Miocene Monterey formation of California were deposited under low oxygen conditions, with restricted clastic influx, beneath waters with high phytoplankton productivity. The resulting diatomaceous and organic-rich sediments underwent diagenetic modification as they were buried.

A suite of core samples was collected from eight wells in the Lost Hills oil field ranging in present depth of burial between 535 and 2285 meters. In one well, the entire Monterey section was sampled. Cores taken from the remaining wells sampled the Reef Ridge and Antelope Members of the Monterey Formation at various burial depths.

Silica mineralogy was studied using …

Audio Magazine: Proposed Series Chapter 04 - Predictions Of A Paradigm, Richard C. Heyser Jan 1983

Audio Magazine: Proposed Series Chapter 04 - Predictions Of A Paradigm, Richard C. Heyser

Unpublished Writings

Richard C. Heyser prepared this chapter as part of a series originally intended for AUDIO magazine in an effort to find an objective way of dealing with the subjective perception of sound. Through the implementation of the time delay spectrometry (TDS) method, Heyser was able to explore the mathematical analysis of audio and the philosophical principles of audio measurement. In Chapter 4, Heyser proposes a new paradigm of alternatives to expand the analysis capabilities of audio measurement.

Xanes In (Tmtsef)2re04: Polarization Dependence Of The Se K-Edge, Juana Vivó Acrivos, S.S. P. Parkin

Juana Vivó Acrivos

We have measured XANES (X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectra) near the Re Li (i=l,II,III) edges in (TMTTF)2Re04 and (TMTSeF) 2Re04 and the Se K edge in the latter compound. An important dependence of the XANES at the Se K edge on the polarisation of the incident beam with respect to the crystal axes was observed, whose interpretation can give information on the symmetry of the unoccupied conduction band states. The positions of the Re L edges were compared with those in several inorganic compounds containing Re in various oxidation states, and were found to be, within experimental error, the same …

Ion-Atom Differential Cross Sections At Intermediate Energies, Ronald E. Olson Jan 1983

Ion-Atom Differential Cross Sections At Intermediate Energies, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The classical-trajectory Monte Carlo method has been used to calculate H++H(1s) electron-capture and ionization differential cross sections in the range 25-200 keV. The results indicate the importance of including excited product states to describe the small-angle electron-capture scattering. Angular scattering of the electron removed by the ionization process has been studied as a function of ejected-electron velocity ve. The classical calculations are in reasonable agreement with coupled-channel results of Shakeshaft [Phys. Rev. A 18, 1930 (1978)] as to the "electron capture to the continuum" (ECC) component of the ionization process where this term is defined as the ejected electron being …

Ion Scattering From State-Selected Rydberg Atoms, G. A. Kohring, A. E. Wetmore, Ronald E. Olson Jan 1983

Ion Scattering From State-Selected Rydberg Atoms, G. A. Kohring, A. E. Wetmore, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Classical-trajectory Monte Carlo calculations have been performed for collisions of protons with state-selected hydrogenic Rydberg atoms. The examples investigated were Rydberg atoms in the n=10, l=9 level with ml=0 and 9. The collision velocity range was 0.1 to 1.0 a.u. (2.2x107 to 2.2x108 cm/s). The ionization cross sections were found to be relatively insensitive to changes in the ml levels. However, the charge-transfer cross sections showed considerable enhancement if the Rydberg electron is orientated in a plane which is parallel to the direction of the incident projectile. © 1983 The American Physical Society.

Molecular Treatment Of Charge Transfer In Li+ +Ca Collisions, M. Kimura, H. Sato, Ronald E. Olson Jan 1983

Molecular Treatment Of Charge Transfer In Li+ +Ca Collisions, M. Kimura, H. Sato, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The perturbed-stationary-state method, appended with electron translation factors, has been applied to charge transfer in Li+ +Ca collisions for energies from 0.1 to 20 keV/amu. The Born-Oppenheimer wave functions and eigenvalues were generated using the pseudopotential technique, which reduced the many-electron system to a simpler two-electron problem. The molecular ground-state X +1 is calculated to be bound and has the potential-well parameters Re=6.20a0, De=1.11 eV, e=235 cm-1, and Be=0.263 cm-1. From the scattering computations, a representative value for the charge-transfer cross section is 4x10-15 cm2 at 5 keV/amu. The cross section decreases rapidly as the energy is reduced below 1 …

Linear Inversion Method To Obtain Aerosol Size Distributions From Measurements With A Differential Mobility Analyzer, Donald E. Hagen, Darryl J. Alofs Jan 1983

Linear Inversion Method To Obtain Aerosol Size Distributions From Measurements With A Differential Mobility Analyzer, Donald E. Hagen, Darryl J. Alofs

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Use of a Differential Mobility Analyzer to Perform Aerosol Size Spectrum Measurements Requires an Inversion Method to Go from the Measured Sensor Responses to the Desired Size Spectrum Information. Here We Present a Linear Inversion Method that Can Be Run on a Microcomputer or a Small Minicomputer. It Does Not Use Some of the Approximations Made in the Techniques Currently Available and Hence Gives Better Inversion Accuracy. the Method Shows Good Immunity to Both Random and Systematic Experimental Error. It is Applied to Numerous Test Case Aerosols. © 1983 Elsevier Science Publishing Co., Inc.

On The Schrödinger Spin‐Exchange Ferromagnet, Harry A. Brown Jan 1983

On The Schrödinger Spin‐Exchange Ferromagnet, Harry A. Brown

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The thermodynamic behavior of a ferromagnet whose interactions are described by the Schrödinger spin‐exchange operator is investigated. The transition temperatures, magnetization, susceptibility, exchange energy, heat capacity, and entropy are calculated for general spin and lattice coordination number using the constant‐coupling approximation. Both first‐ and second‐order phase transitions are found. Comparison with some results of the high‐temperature expansion method shows some qualitative agreement. Implicit Total Variation Diminishing (Tvd) Schemes For Steady-State Calculations, H. C. Yee, R. F Warming, A. Harten Jan 1983

Implicit Total Variation Diminishing (Tvd) Schemes For Steady-State Calculations, H. C. Yee, R. F Warming, A. Harten

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

We examine the application of a new implicit unconditionally-stable high-resolution TVD scheme to steady-state calculations. It is a member of a one-parameter family of explicit and implicit second-order accurate schemes developed by Harten for the computation of weak solutions of one-dimensional hyperbolic conservation laws. This scheme is guaranteed not to generate spurious oscillations for a nonlinear scalar equation and a constant coefficient system. Numerical experiments show that this scheme not only has a fairly rapid convergence rate, but also generates a highly-resolved approximation to the steady-state solution. A detailed implementation of the implicit scheme for the one- and two-dimensional compressible …

Lead-Zinc Metallotects Of The Ozark Dome, Linda Leigh Mallery Jan 1983

Lead-Zinc Metallotects Of The Ozark Dome, Linda Leigh Mallery

Masters Theses

"This is a regional study of the relationship between Mississippi Valley-type mineral deposits and structural features of the Ozark dome which resulted in the description and classification of lead-zinc "metallotects". A more accurate delineation of the Ozark dome was accomplished by examining the gradient and structural contour lines of its Precambrian basement. A general background on the geology, structure, and evaluation of the Ozark dome was discussed along with the stratigraphy, structure, and ore deposits of the major lead-zinc districts of the Ozark dome in order to develop the background data for the application of the "metallotect" concept. The major …

A Study Of The Electroless Plating Of Sn Onto A Die-Cast Aluminum Alloy, Ann-Tinn Shen

Masters Theses

"A tin layer was immersion plated onto a zinc-silicon containing aluminum alloy by using a potassium stannate solution. Conventional aluminum pretreatment was used before immersion plating.

Effects of immersion time with immersion tin thickness and Al-Sn adhesion were studied. Conditions of subsequent Sn-Pb electroplating on Sn plated aluminum samples were investigated.

SEM (scanning electron microscope) and x-ray energy dispersion studies were extensively used on samples of each stage"--Abstract, page ii.

Mineralogy And Chemistry Of The Tuff On Pritchards Station, East-Central Nevada, Stanley Christopher Hatfield Jan 1983

Mineralogy And Chemistry Of The Tuff On Pritchards Station, East-Central Nevada, Stanley Christopher Hatfield

Masters Theses

"The Tuff of Pritchards Station in east-central Nevada is a little-known ash-flow tuff of limited areal extent. A detailed study of this tuff was conducted to determine if it is a distinctive unit which can be correlated from one locality to another.

Mineralogical and chemical data indicate that the Tuff of Pritchards Station displays significant lateral variability. Lateral variations in mineralogy include changes in total crystal content and the amount and grain size of individual minerals present over the area studied. Chemically, the tuff is a quartz latite to rhyodacite in composition. However, certain elements, most noteably titanium, show considerable …

Lithofacies Analysis Of The Roubidoux Formation, South Central Missouri, Michael William Harbaugh Jan 1983

Lithofacies Analysis Of The Roubidoux Formation, South Central Missouri, Michael William Harbaugh

Masters Theses

"Lithologic and thickness data of the Lower Ordovician rocks of the Roubidoux Formation, south central Missouri, were interpreted from sample logs. Maps included are based on structure, thickness and lateral and vertical lithologic variability. Sand distribution in the Roubidoux is represented by a "sand percentage" map, a "sand isolith" map, and a "tripartite sand distribution" map. The Roubidoux Formation consists of a sequence of dolomite, sandy dolomite, sand and chert. It is believed that the Roubidoux was deposited on a stable marine platform receiving a supply of elastics from the north and northeast. The sands were deposited by longshore or …
