An electrostatic analyzer positioned at various angles has been used to measure absolute values of cross sections for electron production in collisions of neutral hydrogen atoms with helium as a function of the angle and energy of the ejected electrons. These cross sections are compared with corresponding ones for proton and electron impact to infer the mechanisms of electron production. A prominent peak in the energy distribution due to electron loss from the projectile occurs at an electron velocity equal to that of the projectile. The distance moduli of galactic clusters containing classical Cepheids are being redetermined using the four-color and Hβ photometric system. The results for four clusters are presented here and it is found that the distance moduli are smaller than previous values. Possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed.

EARLY MATURING MEDICS Early maturing Libyan lines with some tolerance to bluegreen aphids were sown at 6 sites, five in Western Australia and one in South Australia. Seed yield and hard seed data are currently being collated. Maturity and vigour was assessed at all sites and many of the new introductions are earlier than cv. Harbinger and its equal in vegetative growth. A much larger range (300 lines) was grown at Medina and will be introduced into country sites next year.

Teleseismic P wave arrivals were recorded by a dense array of seismographs tations located in the Coso geothermal area, California. The resulting pattern of relative residuals reveals an area showing approximately 0.2-s excess travel time that migrates with changing source azimuth, suggesting that the area is the 'delay shadow' produced by a deep, low-velocity body. Inversion of the relative residual data for three-dimensional velocity structure determines the lateral variations in velocity to a depth of 22.5 km beneath the array. An intense low-velocity body, which coincides with the surface expressions of late Pleistocene rhyolitic volcanism, high heat flow, and hydrothermal …

NNE normal fault trends characterize much of the northern Basin and Range province. These faults make sharp bends to NNW and ENE trends in north- central Nevada in the vicinity of a mid-Miocene rift characterized by a zone of diabase dike swarms, graben-filling flows, and a coinciding aeromagnetic anomaly. Despite a roughly 45 ° change in the least principal stress direction since mid-Miocene time, pre-existing NNW- and ENE-trending faults in the vicinity of the rift accommodated the extension whereas regionally, major crustal blocks were faulted along a NNE trend, approximately perpendicular to the modern least principal stress direction. Inferring principal stress directions from geologic data, focal mechanisms, and in situ stress measurements, we have prepared a map of principal horizontal stress orientations for the conterminous United States. Stress provinces with linear dimensions which range between 100 and 2000 km were defined on the basis of the directions and relative magnitude of principal stresses. Within a given province, stress orientations appear quite uniform (usually within the estimated range of accuracy of the different methods used to determine stress). Available data on the transition in stress direction between the different stress provinces indicate that these transitions can be abrupt, occurring …

Link, is a relatively small shrub found In tropical and subtropical regions of South America, Mexico and Texas (1-2). The plant is known under many common names such as "abre-o-sol" (sun-opener) in the Rio Grande del Sur, "quiebra arado" (plow-breaker) in Argentina and "herva de la vida" (herb of 11fe) in Brazil (1). The Surry Power Station discharges cooling water into the transition zone of the James River. Phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthos, and fouling organism communities were sampled during the years 1969 through 1978, which encompassed a preoperational and an operational period. Temporal changes in the biotic communities followed seasonal patterns of temperature and salinity in the study area, and reflected inherent reproductive patterns of the organisms. Spatial patterns reflected the transport of organisms from the river in the vicinity of the intake to the zone encompassed by the discharge plume, as well as periodic bursts of meroplankton generation in the cooling water canals. …

In order to acquire a greater understanding of some of the major basement structural features characteristic of the Arkoma basin, magnetic and gravity data have been collected and analyzed for a selected area. Several anomalies exist and are found to be associated with faulting or major fracturing in the Precambrian basement. Modelling of source bodies based on magnetic and gravity values provides quantitative estimates of the depth as well as the geometry of basement structural geology.

Radio galaxies were observed for the first time at 150 GHz. The central sources in Cyg A and 3C Ill were detected, as were the two radio lobes of Cyg A. No emission was found from the central source in 3C 236. Each of these three central sources has been previously discussed as the site of the energy supply for the associated distant components. The millimeter-wavelength emission from the central sources in Cyg A and 3C 111 is probably due in each case to a compact component that is optically thin to synchrotron radiation above about 35 GHz. New and expanding activities on the continental shelf including disposal of wastes and dredged material, deepwater ports, floating nuclear power plants, mining, and oil and gas exploitation, have spawned increased interest in the ecology of continental shelf ecosystems and the environmental effects of these activities. Changing patterns of historical uses of the shelf environment, i.e., fishing and transportation, and as yet hypothetical new uses, such as tapping energy from the ocean's currents and gradients, will undoubtedly further increase our concern for the coastal oceans.

Detailed field mapping of outcrops in southern Garden and Morrill counties, Nebraska, has revealed a drop of more than 60 m (200 ft) in 4.8 km (3 mi) in the elevation of the contact between the Brule Formation and the Ogallala Group as exposed on the east side of Rush Creek. Beds of silt, sand, siltstone, and volcanic ash locally dip to the northwest at angles up to 8.5'. The contact between the two formations cannot be seen on the west side of Rush Creek but beds in the Ogallala Group there dip to the north and northeast. Rocks north …

Ultraviolet spectra of two late type M stars R Aql and W Hya were obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE). Spectra were obtained of R Aql near maximum (cf>=0.21) and minimum (cf>=0.65) of the visible light curve. We find that the absolute flux intensity of the Mgn resonance doublet (2796 A, 2803 A) is essentially the same at these phases in the visible light curve. A nebular emission feature at 3133 A is detected at minimum light in R Aql that is possibly due to 0 III. Mg II emission is totally absent in W Hya, which …
