An Experimental Investigation Of Coloring Matter In Canna Indica Flowers, James Clinton Vogt Jan 1961

An Experimental Investigation Of Coloring Matter In Canna Indica Flowers, James Clinton Vogt

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The research was carried out for the purpose of isolating and identifying the coloring matter in flowers of the canna indica (canna lily) variety. It was done by extracting the pigment from flower petals with methanol, amyl alcohol, and other solvents, and crystallizing the pigment as a salt. Physical properties such as solubility, color reactions, spectra and others were examined for this pigment. Chemical properties and degradation products were also examined in order to identify the chemical structure of the pigment.

A Kinetic Study Of The Base Catalyzed Esterification Of Propionic Anhydride With Isopropyl And N-Propyl Alcohols Using A High Frequency Oscillometer, Carl Joel Abraham

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research project is to investigate the base catalyzed reaction of propionic anhydride with n-propyl and isopropyl alcohols using a high frequency (120 megacycles) oscillometer to follow the course of the reaction as it proceeds.

The high frequency oscillometer has been used for many types of analytical determinations, and a review of the work up to 1957 is available in a publication by E. H. Sargent Company. The oscillometer has found application in titrations (Hall 1952), analysis of binary systems (Thomas, Faegin, and Wilson 1951) , static ternary systems (West, Robickaus, and Burkhalter 1951) , the study …

Analysis Of The A3(X3)3 Nuclear Spin System And -Electron Coupled Hyperfine Splitting Constants In Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Juana Acrivos Jan 1961

Analysis Of The A3(X3)3 Nuclear Spin System And -Electron Coupled Hyperfine Splitting Constants In Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Juana Acrivos

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

The nuclear spin functions for the A3(X3)3 system have been developed and used to analyse the NMR spectra of (CH3)3C6H3 and (CF3)3C6H3. The π-electron coupled hyperfine splitting constants, obtained from the Ramsey theory with simple Hückel M.O.'s for benzene and without the assumption of an average energy of excitation for the virtual processes which give rise to the coupling, are in agreement with the hyperfine constants observed between the methyl groups and the ring protons in the above compounds.

The Carbon Compounds Of The Primeval Atmosphere, James Sherman Rogers Jan 1961

The Carbon Compounds Of The Primeval Atmosphere, James Sherman Rogers

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The question of how and when life originated on t his planet has always been an intriguing one, exceeded perhaps in fascination only by that area of speculation which concerns itself with death and the afterlife . The latter problem has generally been approached along theological lines; the former problem , that of the origin of life, has been widely investigated along scientific lines as well . Indeed, the origin of life has always been one of the fundamental problems of science, and the increasingly sophisticated answers to the problem reflect the increasing potence and applicability of the methods of …

Identification Of The Products And Mechanism Of Decomposition Of Thiazate, Paul Edward Williams Jan 1961

Identification Of The Products And Mechanism Of Decomposition Of Thiazate, Paul Edward Williams

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This work is an additional facet of the research undertaken by Dr. Herschel Frye of the Department of Chemistry of the University of the Pacific while he was a graduate student at the University of Oregon. Frye succeeded in making an analytical reagent for zinc and other transition metals similar to dithiszone but water soluble. His approach was to to sulfonate the benzene rings thus giving water solubility because of the ionic nature of the sulfonic acid. The new reagent-tensed thiazate--was quite successful in its purpose, but the sections of the compound were somewhat different than dithizone. The purpose of …

Correcting Cobalt Deficiency, Laurence C. Snook Jan 1961

Correcting Cobalt Deficiency, Laurence C. Snook

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

COBALT is essential in the food eaten by sheep and cattle. As little as one part of cobalt in 10,000,000 parts of food appears to be adequate.

But if this mere trace is missing, ruminants will waste away and die, even when the feed appears excellent In every other way.

A Rational Approach To The Estimation Of Evaporation And Evapotranspiration From Climatological Data, Jerald Emmet Christiansen, B. B. Patil Jan 1961

A Rational Approach To The Estimation Of Evaporation And Evapotranspiration From Climatological Data, Jerald Emmet Christiansen, B. B. Patil

Reports

Many attempts have been made to derive mathematical expressions relating evaporation and evapotranspiration, or consumptive use, to climatological data. IN the United States, the Blaney-Criddle formula is probably the best known for estimating consumptive use (2 and 3). Blaney (1) has also suggested that this formula is suitable for estimating evaporation as measured with a Weather Bureau pan. Other well known formulas are the Penman formulas (10), the Thornthwaite formula (15) and the Hargreaves formulas (8). Halkias, Beihmeyer and Hendrickson (6) suggest that water requirements of crops can be determined from atmometer data. Lowry and Johnson (() in an early …

The area covered is approximately 2500 square nautical miles of the neritic zone within the 20-fathom contour. The shore line encompasses the mouth of Chesapeake Bay …

The Estimation Of Parameters In Regression Functions Subject To Certain Restraints, Paul D. Minton, Alfred E. Crofts Jr. Jan 1961

The Estimation Of Parameters In Regression Functions Subject To Certain Restraints, Paul D. Minton, Alfred E. Crofts Jr.

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

We consider two types of problems in maximum likelihood estimation of parameters of linear functions subject to certain restraints. One is a family of lines with equal slopes or intercepts; the other is a pair of lines constrained to meet at a predetermined point. In the case of normally distributed errors with equal variances within each set, the solutions are identical with least squares solutions. In addition to linear functions, non-linear functions which are transformable to linearity may be treated under these methods.

Certain Features Of Alteration In The Michigan Lavas And Their Genetic Interpretation, Peethambaram Doraibabu Jan 1961

Certain Features Of Alteration In The Michigan Lavas And Their Genetic Interpretation, Peethambaram Doraibabu

Masters Theses

"The origin of the alteration and copper mineralization in the Keweenawan lavas of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is one of the well known controversial topics in Economic Geology. The literature on this problem is most extensive and an attempt was made in this thesis to first review as many aspects of the discussion as appeared to be necessary. This portion is necessarily extensive, and it is hoped that some new light has been thrown here on some patterns of approach or thought which, today, can hardly be called scientific.

Next, the observations made in the field, on hand specimens …

"SCOPE AND PURPOSE The Lead Belt area of southeast Missouri, which is nearly 40 km. long and 10 km. wide, is considered, at the present time, the most important lead district in the world. Lead has been mined in this area by the natives prior to 1720, and almost continuously up to the present day. A variety of sulphides are mined from different places in the district.

The sulphide deposits in the Lead Belt are considered to be typical examples of the Mississippi Valley Type Deposits, which are distributed all over the world. As in practically all the Mississippi Valley …

The Determination Of Ethanol In Aqueous Solution By Gas-Liquid Partition Chromatography, Robert L. Morrison Jan 1961

The Determination Of Ethanol In Aqueous Solution By Gas-Liquid Partition Chromatography, Robert L. Morrison

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The present chemical and physical methods for the determination of ethyl alcohol are all subject to systematic errors derived from any of a number of interfacing substances usually present in solution with the ethanol. Some of the most popular methods are slow and tedious and require a good deal of skill and technique to perform. The dichromate (2), pycnometer and refractometer methods are three such methods. The interfering substances most often present in industrial and food products are fusel oils and acetaldehyde. These substances interfere in the three methods just mentioned. It is of course possible to analyze for these …

Cosmology And Galactic Angular Momenta, Marmion Michael Richard Hays Jan 1961

Cosmology And Galactic Angular Momenta, Marmion Michael Richard Hays

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The plan of this paper is to present some observations and then in subsequent chapters to examine the two basic cosmological ideas in the light of these observations.

The first of the observations involves an estimate of the angular momentum in a given volume of space and the ratio of this momentum to the mass or number of nucleons in the given volume. We therefore wish to obtain a rough estimate of the angular momentum in that part of the universe which man may call his immediate surroundings, i.e., the solar system and galaxy.

The Magnetic Monopole, Thomas E. Kemple Jan 1961

The Magnetic Monopole, Thomas E. Kemple

Masters Theses

"Since Dirac has shown that the concept of a magnetic monopole follows from the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics and that it imposes quantization of electric charge, one has reason for taking the magnetic monopole seriously. Such particles, if they exist, would also give symmetry to Maxwell's equations.

A comprehensive review of the literature is presented and all known properties of magnetic poles are discussed. Scattering of mono- poles by heavy nuclei is analyzed in detail and definite mathematical relations are established. All previous experimental work known is outlined and discussed. Definite criteria for identification of monopole tracks in a …

A Theoretical Investigation Of Periodic Precipitation, Jack M. Scrivner

Masters Theses

"The problem of periodic precipitation in solution or gel is considered from the standpoint of supplementing the simple diffusion equation with chemical reaction rate terms. This addition has the effect of making the differential equations of the process non-linear.

The system of equations admits of a periodic, steady-state solution under certain conditions, but lack of experimental values for the parameters prohibits a definite statement as to whether or not the model is valid"--Abstract, page ii.

Certain Trace Element Distribution In The Searchlight, Nevada Quartz Monzonite, Clark County, Nevada, Jai Nandan Shrivastava Jan 1961

Certain Trace Element Distribution In The Searchlight, Nevada Quartz Monzonite, Clark County, Nevada, Jai Nandan Shrivastava

Masters Theses

"The once prosperous gold, silver, copper and lead mines of the Searchlight mining district, Nevada, are situated along the south and western margins of a large quartz monzonite body. This intrudes the Precambrian gneisses and younger lava flows. Associated mineral veins show an eccentric type of zoning around the intrusive.

Seven rock samples of the quartz monzonite representing different parts of the intrusive were analyzed petrographically and spectrographically. Modal analyses and various types of rock alteration were investigated petrographically. Spectrochemical analyses of the rock samples and their major minerals were carried out for certain trace elements. A semi-quantitative method was …
