Energy And Angular Distributions Of Secondary Electrons From 5-100-Kev-Proton Collisions With Hydrogen And Nitrogen Molecules, M. Eugene Rudd Jan 1979

Energy And Angular Distributions Of Secondary Electrons From 5-100-Kev-Proton Collisions With Hydrogen And Nitrogen Molecules, M. Eugene Rudd

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

Cross sections for the ejection of electrons from hydrogen and nitrogen by protons have been measured as a function of the energy and angle of ejection of the electrons at incident proton energies of 5-70 keV and 100 keV for hydrogen. The range of angles measured was 10-160° and the electron energy range was 1.5-300 eV. The doubly differential cross sections were also integrated over angle, over electron energy, or over both to obtain singly differential and total cross sections for electron production. Average electron energies were also calculated from the data. The angular distributions of electrons are peaked in …

Excited States And Photochemistry Of Saturated Molecules. Vii. Potential Energy Surfaces In Excited Singlet States Of Methane, Mark S. Gordon, James W. Caldwell Jan 1979

Excited States And Photochemistry Of Saturated Molecules. Vii. Potential Energy Surfaces In Excited Singlet States Of Methane, Mark S. Gordon, James W. Caldwell

Mark S. Gordon

Potential energy surfaces are investigated for a number of low‐lying excited singlet states of methane, using a split valence plus Rydberg basis set and singly excited CI. Of the six minima found, the lowest two are valence states. The lowest minimum corresponds to the products 1 1 B 1 CH2+1 1Σ g + H2, in agreement with the observed threshold photochemistry, and is accessible by five separate routes from the lowest vertical state. The second valence minimum is a square planar structure. Of the four Rydberg minima detected, one is a local minimum on the otherwise dissociative B 1surface and …

Temperature Dependent Spatial Order In Superfluid And Normal 4he, Robert Hallock, H. N. Robkoff, D. A. Ewen

Robert Hallock

Measurements of the structure factor S(k) for 4He at constant density above and below Tλ are reported. The results show a clear loss of spatial order on cooling through Tλ. Application of the theory of Cummings, Hyland, and Rowlands to the data allows a measurement of the condensate fraction for He II.

Behavior Of Persistent Currents Under Conditions Of Strong Decay, Robert Hallock, D. T. Ekholm

Robert Hallock

We report observations of the decay of persistent currents of thin superfluid 4He films for which the superfluid velocity deviates strongly from the previously observed logt behavior. We present data which document the evolution of this behavior as a function of film thickness. The Iordanskii-Langer-Fisher theory does not accurately describe our observation

The Structure And Stratigraphy Of The Columbia River Basalt In The Hood River Valley, Oregon, Susan Timm

Dissertations and Theses

The Hood River Valley, located 100 kilometers east of Portland, Oregon, is in the transition zone between two geologic provinces--the High Cascades and the Columbia Plateau. The entire valley is probably underlain by Columbia River Basalt, but it crops out only on steep hillsides and in stream valleys. The base of the basalt is not exposed in the thesis area. The basalt is overlain by Pliocene and Quaternary basalt and andesite, volcanic sediments and glacial debris.

The stratigraphy of the Columbia River Basalt is useful in determining the path of the basalt flows into western Oregon, in mapping the structure …

Determination Of Surface Thickness Assuming A Linear-Density Profile, Jerry Goodisman Jan 1979

Determination Of Surface Thickness Assuming A Linear-Density Profile, Jerry Goodisman

Chemistry - All Scholarship

Assuming a one-parameter model for the two-particle distribution function of a surface, one can choose a value of the "width parameter" to yield a correct surface tension. In order to then identify the width of the surface layer with the value of the width parameter, as is often done, one can check the validity of the model by verifying that other properties (e.g., surface energy) are correctly calculated, or, as proposed herein, by demonstrating that different formulas for the surface tension give identical results. A new formula is derived, and the relation between the different formulas discussed. Calculations are performed …

Planting Trees-Why Rather Than How, Angelo Cohn Jan 1979

Planting Trees-Why Rather Than How, Angelo Cohn

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Three evergreen plantings over 25 years in a private woodland are described and evaluated in terms of reforestation, economics and personal satisfaction. Credit is given to government foresters and support from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DN\R) and the federal Forest Incentives Program (FIP). Changes in site preparation methods, selection of species and planting procedures are discussed as outcomes of research and field experience. Cost-benefits are assigned principally to human values reflected in family learning and enhanced appreciation of the ecosystem of rural Minnesota.

Till Fabrics And Pedoturbations In Some Soils Of Minnesota, Gerald W. Mccormick

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Till-fabric analyses provide an index of pedoturbation for soils formed in till. This analysis of four soils in east-central Minnesota shows that pedoturbation has had little or no effect upon the orientations of pebbles in B2 horizons and ambiguous effects in the B 1 and A2 horizons. Effects of frost action are not apparent.

A Study Of Vertical And Horizontal Visibility Relationships Under Water, Jean J. Mccarthy Jan 1979

A Study Of Vertical And Horizontal Visibility Relationships Under Water, Jean J. Mccarthy

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A threefold study was undertaken to:

1) determine the nature of the mathematical relationship between vertical and horizontal visibility underwater

2) examine the feasibility of using the Secchi disc method to measure horizontal visibility in the photic zone;

3) obtain descriptive data on vertical and horizontal visibility in selected lakes of southern Minnesota.

The Secchi disc technique for measuring· visibility was modified to accommodate horizontal readings, and data were col1lected from 12 lakes at 5, 15 and 25 feet depths under controlled conditions. Reliability correlations were significant (p ( .01) and ranged from .764 to .994. Correlations and regression equations …

Interplanetary Magnetic Field Sector Polarity And Neuropsychiatric Adaption: A Reanalysis, Hans W. Wendt Jan 1979

Interplanetary Magnetic Field Sector Polarity And Neuropsychiatric Adaption: A Reanalysis, Hans W. Wendt

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Recent Russian studies reported associations between adaptation syndromes and (solar activity-related) interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) sector polarity. Certain ambiguities in the original work suggested some reanalyses, based on the graphs and data made available. Syndrome status exhibited a biphasic (semi annual) trend. It also correlated with specific geomagnetic changes during magnetic storms and possibly after sudden impulses. Moreover, lag effects and higher order interactions were noted among all parameters investigated. The restudy tends to support some of the original findings but also suggests new conclusions regarding potential relationships between geophysical/solar and psychophysiological processes.

A Program To Re-Establish And Study Prairie Grassland And Assess Effect Of Fire, Lee W. Eberley, Keith H. Dueholm Jan 1979

A Program To Re-Establish And Study Prairie Grassland And Assess Effect Of Fire, Lee W. Eberley, Keith H. Dueholm

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Two plots in southeastern Minnesota were seeded with several species of prairie vegetation . Grasses native to the prairie proliferated, while some foreign species failed to survive. Fire was used on one plot to stimulate the native species and reduce competition from cool-season grasses. Additional planting of forbs will be attempted to increase species diversity on the plots. Burning also will be continued to determine the effect of fire on the vegetation.

Critical Areas Planning In Minnesota, Clifton J. Aichinger Jan 1979

Critical Areas Planning In Minnesota, Clifton J. Aichinger

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The Critical Areas Planning Program was established by Minnesota legislation in 1973. Its primary work is with local units of government, regional or state agencies located within areas possessing significant natural, scientific, cultural or historical resources to develop consistent plans and regulations for area use and management. Local units of government prepare the plans and regulations according to guidelines approved by the governor for each critical area'. with technical and financial assistance from the Environmental Quality Board (EQB). The enabling act directed the EQB to develop an inventory of potential critical areas in the state. Inventory methods were evaluated. The …

On The Distribution Of The Permanent Of Cyclic (0,1) Matrices, Evi Nemeth, Jennifer Seberry, Michael Shu Jan 1979

On The Distribution Of The Permanent Of Cyclic (0,1) Matrices, Evi Nemeth, Jennifer Seberry, Michael Shu

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Some results are obtained on the permanent of cyclic (0,1) matrices which support the conjecture that for such matrices of prime order p the number of distinct values the permanent attains is of order p. Writing e(r) for the number of distinct values the permanent of cyclic (0,1) matrices of order n can attain we found e(5) = 6, e(6) = 12, e(7) = 9, e(8) = 11, e(9) = 21, e(10) ≤ 44, and e(11) ≤ 30. It is easy to show e(p) ≤ 1/p(2p-2)+2, p prime, but these answers are considerably smaller. We obtain formulae for the permanent …

Ordered Partitions And Codes Generated By Circulant Matrices, R Razen, Jennifer Seberry, K Wehrhahn Jan 1979

Ordered Partitions And Codes Generated By Circulant Matrices, R Razen, Jennifer Seberry, K Wehrhahn

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

We consider the set of ordered partitions of n into m parts acted upon by the cyclic permutation (I2 ... m). The resulting family of orbits P(n, m) is shown to have cardinality p(n, m) = (l/n) ∑d│m φ(d) (::.'!~) where φ is Euler's φ-function. P(n, m) is shown to be set-isomorphic to the family of orbits ℓ(n, m) of the set of all m-subsets of an n-set acted upon by the cyclic permutation (12 ... n). This isomorphism yields an efficient method for determining the complete weight enumerator of any code generated by a circulant matrix.

A Note On Orthogonal Graeco-Latin Designs, Jennifer Seberry Jan 1979

A Note On Orthogonal Graeco-Latin Designs, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

It is shown that Graeco-Latin block designs which have treatments totally balanced with respect to blocks in each set and which are pairwise orthogonal with respect to the other set can be constructed with parameters v1 = r2 = p + 1, r1 = v2 = p, b = 2p, k = (p+l)/2 for p a prime power. Moreoever they can be represented in a compact manner and previously ad hoc examples become part of the series.

Constructions are given for generalised Hadamard matrices and weighing matrices with entries from abelian groups. These are then used to construct families of SBIBDs giving alternate proofs to those of Rajkundlia.

Women In Mathematics In Australia, Jennifer Seberry Jan 1979

Women In Mathematics In Australia, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Many people believe women cannot "do" mathematics. This is not true, Tables 1, 2 and 3 show us that some women are quite good at mathematics. Also Table 1 which shows Honours degrees, clearly indicates that in recent years the percentage of women obtaining Honours degrees has steadily increased. I attribute this increase to the consciousness raising due to changing community attitudes to to women. It is no longer unfashionable for women to obtain a mathematical education with a view to having a career.

Higher-Dimensional Orthogonal Designs And Hadamard Matrices Ii, J Hammer, Jennifer Seberry Jan 1979

Higher-Dimensional Orthogonal Designs And Hadamard Matrices Ii, J Hammer, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Higher-dimensional orthogonal designs of type (l,l)n are used to obtain higher-dimensional weighing matrices of type (q)n, side q+l and propriety (2,2,...,2) for q = l(mod 4) a prime power. Next, n-dimensional orthogonal designs of type (l,l,l,l)n, side 4 and propriety (2,2, ...,2) are constructed. These are then used to show that higher-dimensional Hadamard matrices of order (4t)t exist whenever t is the side of 4-Williamson matrices. This establishes the existence of higher-dimensional Hadamard matrices of order (4t) t for t odd, 1 ≤ t ≤ 33 and several infinite families, all of propriety (2,2,...,2). Finally, we establish that if there …

Optimum Trip Level Of M-Out-Of-N Reactor Temperature Trip-Amplifier Systems, J. M. Kontoleon Jan 1979

Optimum Trip Level Of M-Out-Of-N Reactor Temperature Trip-Amplifier Systems, J. M. Kontoleon

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper determines the optimum high-trip- level setting of m-out-of-n:G temperature- trip-amplifier systems, used for the protection of nuclear reactors against excess temperatures, which results in the maximum reliability. The bivariate normal distribution is used to simulate the fluctuation of the thermocouple signals and the uncertainties of the trip settings. The thermocouples and the trip amplifiers can fail in two modes of failure: fail-safe and fail-danger. It is shown that by properly selecting the trip levels of the amplifier units the reliability of the protection system is maximized. The optimum trip-level is calculated for various commonly used configurations using a computer …
