A Radiochemical Investigation Of Short-Lived Selenium And Bromine Fission Products, James Edward Sattizahn Jr May 1957

A Radiochemical Investigation Of Short-Lived Selenium And Bromine Fission Products, James Edward Sattizahn Jr

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

From a sample of uranium bombarded with neutrons, Hahn and Strassmann, in 1939, separated four radioactive products which followed alkaline earth chemistry and were therefore tentatively attributed to isotope of radium. Each of these products decayed to a daughter activity which could be precipitated along with lanthanum; the daughter activities were then assumed to be isotopes of actinium. Subsequently, by accepted methods of fractional crystallization and precipitation, the "radium" and "actinium" isotopes were identified unequivocally as isotopes of barium and lanthanum, respectively. Within a relatively short time there were found more such radioactive products, which were identified as isotopes of …

Behavior Of Indium At Tracer Concentrations, Katheryn L. Lawson May 1957

Behavior Of Indium At Tracer Concentrations, Katheryn L. Lawson

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The increase in number and availability of radioisotopes that can be produced in the carrier-free state has offered practical means of investigating the chemical behavior of substances at extremely low concentrations. The working region of concentrations, which may extend to less than 10-14 molar, is generally fixed only by the half-life of the radio-element and the nature of the radiation.

The Use Of Branchiostegal Rays To Determine Age Of Lake Trout Salvelinus Namaycush Walbaum, Ross Vivian Bulkley May 1957

The Use Of Branchiostegal Rays To Determine Age Of Lake Trout Salvelinus Namaycush Walbaum, Ross Vivian Bulkley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Any method used in aging fish must fulfill certain requirements to be satisfactory. If the method is inaccurate, naturally little reliance can be placed upon its use. If considerable study of the method and much practice are required before accurate readings can be obtained, the method will not come into widespread use. The requirements of an aging method, then are that it must be accurate and comparatively easy. The scale method for aging lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush Walbaum) unfortunately does not fulfill these requirements. It has always been difficult to tell the age of lake trout by the examination …

Geology Of The East-Central Part Of The Malad Range, Idaho, Prapath Prammani May 1957

Geology Of The East-Central Part Of The Malad Range, Idaho, Prapath Prammani

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During recent years geologic investigations have been made in various parts of northern Utah and southern Idaho. In the Cache Valley area. the Bear River Range which bounds the east side of the valley has been studied and mapped. On the west side of the valley, the Wellsville Mountain and the southern part of Malad Range have also been studied. Still, little is known about the east-central part of the Malad Range. The study of this area will give additional information to the over-all picture of the geology of the region. The purpose of this thesis is threefold. The first …

The Dehydrocyclization Of Normal Heptane To Toluene With Supported Rhenium, Platinum And Molybdenum Catalysts, Robert R. Beishline May 1957

The Dehydrocyclization Of Normal Heptane To Toluene With Supported Rhenium, Platinum And Molybdenum Catalysts, Robert R. Beishline

Theses and Dissertations

The dehydrocyclization activity of supported platinum, molybdenum and rhenium catalysts was studied by determining the toluene yield from n-heptane as a function of temperature and metal concentration in the catalyst. The support was 100 to 200 mesh alumina. Metal concentrations of 0.01% to 1.0% platinum, 0.1% to 2.0% molybdenum and 0.1% to 2.5% rhenium were studied in the temperature range from 500° to 600° C. Platinum was shown to be superior to both molybdenum and rhenium at all temperatures and metal concentrations investigated. The rhenium data were somewhat erratic, but showed rhenium to be a poor dehydrocyclization catalyst. The apparatus, …

The Worm Creek Quartzite Member Of The St. Charles Formation, Utah-Idaho, Anthon V. Haynie Jr. May 1957

The Worm Creek Quartzite Member Of The St. Charles Formation, Utah-Idaho, Anthon V. Haynie Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This report presents the results of a stratigraphic study of the Worm Creek quartzite, the basal member of the St. Charles formation of Upper Cambrian age. The member is present in the Bear River Range, the Malad Range, and the Promontory Range of Northern Utah and southeastern Idaho. The Worm Creek quartzite was differentiated as the basal unit of the St. Charles formation by Richardson (1913) and named for its occurrence in Worm Creek Canyon in the Bear River Range, Bear Lake County, Idaho.

A stratigraphic investigation of the Worm Creek quartzite, including thickness and lithologic changes, was made. Through …

Relationship Of Bicarbonate Concentration Of Plant Tissue To That Of The Growth Media As A Factor In Chlorosis, Gary H. Carlsen May 1957

Relationship Of Bicarbonate Concentration Of Plant Tissue To That Of The Growth Media As A Factor In Chlorosis, Gary H. Carlsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Throughout the years lime-induced chlorosis has contributed to untold economic losses. Although this disease has challenged the technical ingenuity of outstanding plant and soil scientists, the exact cause has never been determined; consequently, no preventative measures or permanent cures can, as yet, be recommended. This physiological malady, unchecked, continues its rampage in regions where the disease is prevalent.

The problem is of wide significance because calcareous soils are distributed throughout the world. It is of primary concern to us because the majority of the land of western United States is of this type. An estimated 500,000 acres of crops growing …

Structure Of Ch2, Gordon A. Gallup

Gordon Gallup Publications

CH2
Recent mechanism studies have created interest in the question of the spin multiplicity in the molecular fragment CH2. The present note concerns a detailed quantum-mechanical calculation, using the LCAO-MO approximation, undertaken to determine if numerical calculations indicate any preference of one state over the other.

The Chemical Effects Of Gamma Radiation On Halogenated Methanes, Clifford G. Shultz Feb 1957

The Chemical Effects Of Gamma Radiation On Halogenated Methanes, Clifford G. Shultz

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

At its inception, the present work was to consist of testing a number of halogenated organic compounds for sensitivity to radiation. Some of the compounds which showed a relatively high sensitivity to radiation were to be investigated more thoroughly with a view toward a) the development of a sensitive radiation detection device and b) elucidation of the reactions involved in the radiolytic decomposition of the compounds. Some screening had already been done and several systems involving chloroform, bromoform and carbon tetrachloride had been investigated and their results reported. The experiments on the chloroform- and bromoform- crystal violet systems showed a …
