Effect Of Random Anisotropy On Magnetic Properties Of Amorphous Systems, J.D. Patterson, G.R. Gruzalski, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

We consider the random anisotropy model for amorphous magnetism by making a local-mean-field approximation (LMFA) on arrays of spin-one particles. Hysteresis loops and the temperature (T) dependence of several thermodynamic quantities are presented for various values of the ratio of the strength of the exchange (J) to the strength of the uniaxial anisotropy (D). Using the LMFA limits us to systems with a small number (N) of spins, of which we explicitly consider N=64, 216, and 1000. We assume periodic boundary conditions on a system with N1/3 spins along …

Application Of An Extremum Principle To The Variational Determination Of The Generalized Oscillator Strengths Of Helium, J. M. Wadehra, Larry Spruch, Robin Shakeshaft

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

Variational principles have been used extensively for estimating some given functional F(φ, φ) where the functions φ and φ are well defined by a set of differential equations and boundary conditions but cannot be determined exactly. The variational principle for the estimation of a matrix element of an arbitrary Hermitian operator W involves not only the trial wave functions φt but also trial auxiliary Lagrange functions Lt; the Lt depend on the φt and on W. To determine the parameters in the Lt efficiently, a functional M …

On List Structures And Their Use In The Programming Of Unification, F. Lockwood Morris Aug 1978

On List Structures And Their Use In The Programming Of Unification, F. Lockwood Morris

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

The notion of list structure is discussed, and a new construct is introduced into LISP which permits the computation of list structures containing cycles without recourse to operations which alter existing structures. It is shown that list structures can be used to represent both finite and “rational” infinite terms. Substitutions (generalized for a term algebra which includes infinite terms) are discussed, “tables” are introduced as an abstract data type, and two methods of representing substitutions by tables, together with their interrelation, are considered. Concise programs are given for a succession of forms of Robinson’s unification algorithm, including one which operates …

Effects Of Soil Injection Of Liquid Dairy Manure On The Quality Of Surface Runoff, I. J. Ross, S. Sizemore, J. P. Bowden, C. T. Haan Aug 1978

Effects Of Soil Injection Of Liquid Dairy Manure On The Quality Of Surface Runoff, I. J. Ross, S. Sizemore, J. P. Bowden, C. T. Haan

KWRRI Research Reports

Liquid dairy manure has been injected on the soil contour to depths of 6 and 12 inches and applied to the surface of a Bluegrass sod and a bare tilled soil. Application rates of 9,250 gallons per acre were used. Runoff from 9-foot-square plots which were sprinkled at rates of 2.5 inches per hour on sod and 1.5 inches per hour on bare soil was collected and analyzed for various pollution parameters including COD, N, TS, TSS, pH, DO, and Fecal Coliform. The effects of pollutant yield in the runoff have been determined for various treatments.

Injection of the manure …

Evaluation Of Detention Basins For Controlling Urban Runoff And Sedimentation, C. T. Haan, A. D. Ward

KWRRI Research Reports

This report summarizes the work completed under the research project "Evaluation of Dentention Basins for Controlling Urban Runoff and Sedimentation." The main project accomplishments were:

(1) a demonstration of the desirability of considering systems of urban stormwater detention basins as opposed to individual basin design,

(2) the development of a systems analysis approach for least cost selection of a system of dentention basins for meeting a preset hydrologic objective,

(3) the development of a mathematical, computer-based simulation model of the performance of sediment retention basins,

(4) partial verification of the sediment basin model and

(5) the development of design recommendations …

Paleoecology Of The Spiriferid Brachiopods Of The Silica Shale Formation (Middle Devonian), S.E. Michigan And N.W. Ohio, Darioush T. Ghahremani

Masters Theses

Spiriferid brachiopods of the Middle Devonian Silica Formation in northwestern Ohio and southeastern Michigan show many Features that are useful For paleoecologic interpretation. This study is undertaken to examine and interpret the paleoecology and paleobiology of six spiriferid brachiopods Mucrospirifer prolificus, Mucrospirifer grabaui, Mucrospirifer profundus, Mucrospirifer mucronatus, Paraspirifer bownockeri and Spinocyrtia euryteines. All are very abundant and can be easily collected from quarries in the Silica Formation near Sylvania, Ohio.

Fourteen different morphologic characteristics have been tabulated for all specimens used in this study. These characteristics allow interpretations of the ontogenetic de velopment and ecologic relationships of the six studied …

Computer Simulation Of Nutrients In Tampa Bay, Florida, Bernard E. Ross, Paula D. Jerkins Aug 1978

Computer Simulation Of Nutrients In Tampa Bay, Florida, Bernard E. Ross, Paula D. Jerkins

Reports

During the past ten years or so the pollution in Tampa Bay, Florida has been studied extensively. Legally, pollution is defined with respect to water use classifications. For each water use classification, adequate water quality standards are imposed by law to insure safety to "man, fish and wildlife and to insure that nuisances will not occur. A body of water is polluted only when it does not meet the standards set for the water use classification applied to it.

A Systems-Theory Approach To The Analysis Of Multiexponential Fluorescence Decay, Corey C. Ford, Jerome Eisenfeld Aug 1978

A Systems-Theory Approach To The Analysis Of Multiexponential Fluorescence Decay, Corey C. Ford, Jerome Eisenfeld

Mathematics Technical Papers

A mathematical model of the fluorescence decay experiment based on linear systems theory is presented. The model suggests an experimental technique which increases the probability of correctly determining the decay constants of a multicomponent system. Using moment methods for data analysis, accuracy is improved by combining information obtained from several discrete experiments. Examples are presented to show that the analysis of a three component system composed of known standards is improved as the number of experimental determinations is increased from 1 to 4. The discrete measurements are made by changing the excitation and emission wavelengths.

Structural Effects On Micellar Catalyzed Reaction Of Hydroxamic Acids, Nop Utrapiromsuk Aug 1978

Structural Effects On Micellar Catalyzed Reaction Of Hydroxamic Acids, Nop Utrapiromsuk

Masters Theses

Introduction

For many years scientists have tried to find a model which resembles a biological system, so that they can use this model for studying biological systems in human and in living organisms. Micelle systems provide the environment to mimic enzyme systems to some degree.1

Soaps and detergents generate micelles. Soaps and detergents have been used as cleansing agents for a long time. Their cleansing properties are related to micelle formation. Actually, soap is simply a mixture of sodium salts of long chain fatty acids, R-COO- Na+, and some detergents are general sodium salts of straight …
