Thing We Need To Do, Mel Steen Jan 1957

Thing We Need To Do, Mel Steen

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

Nebraska has great need to preserve and develop her wildlife and recreational resources. We have reached that paint in our history when we can no longer rely on yesterday's measures in this field. For our own social and economic good, we must now do things we have hereto considered unnecessary.

We face problems that a few years ago were unknown. The complexity and rapid growth of modern civilization, a civilization that has reached heights never before attained by man, create new and growing problems on the wildlife and recreational front. We have great need to preserve that which we have, …

Medial Pleistocene Fossil Vertebrate Localities In Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner Jan 1957

Medial Pleistocene Fossil Vertebrate Localities In Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum

The accurate geologic dating of Pleistocene vertebrate localities which occur outside the glaciated regions has always been difficult. Several new fossil localities in Nebraska now provide data for a better understanding of the paleoecology and faunal evidence of the medial Pleistocene of the Great Plains region.

A fossil quarry, containing the remains of both vertebrates and invertebrates, has been discovered in south-central Nebraska (11/2 miles south and west of Angus in Nuckolls County). The fossils are preserved in Sappa silts in a lime concentration zone (C horizon) of a Yarmouth paleosol. The calcium carbonate appears to have been responsible for …

Final Report: Heat Transport Of The Florida Current., Frank Chew, L. P. Wagner, Robert C. Work Jan 1957

Final Report: Heat Transport Of The Florida Current., Frank Chew, L. P. Wagner, Robert C. Work

RSMAS Technical Reports

Excess solar isolation received in the low latitudes of the earth is lost by way of transfer to the overlying air and by way of bodily movements of warm water out of the region. The Florida Current is one such movement of warm water, characterized by its narrow width, high speed, and high temperature. Because of these characteristics, the influence of the Florida Current on atmospheric processes is of paramount importance.

Nebraska Deer, William Bailey Jr., George Schildman, Phillip Agee, C. G. Pritchard Jan 1957

Nebraska Deer, William Bailey Jr., George Schildman, Phillip Agee, C. G. Pritchard

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

IN COMMON with the experience of most states, Nebraska's deer herds were reduced to a very low level by excessive harvests in our early history. Most American big-game animals were overharvested in the early history of this nation because of commercialization. Buffalo were killed for their hides, deer for their meat. This slaughter continued as long as the hunter (or poacher) could sell his take at a profit. Modem game management and public opinion reversed this trend. Deer are on the way back all over America, and in some states the protection-complex was so strong that deer were restored to …

Biological Indices Of Water Pollution, With Special Reference To Fish Populations, Peter Doudoroff, Charles E. Warren Jan 1957

Biological Indices Of Water Pollution, With Special Reference To Fish Populations, Peter Doudoroff, Charles E. Warren

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

A number of investigators have very recently published discussions having to do with biological indices and biological measures of water pollution (1) (2) (7) (13) (14) (15) (16) (26) (27) (28) (29) (30) (36) (38). Fjerdingstad (12) has discussed some of the pertinent European literature. The fundamental concepts presented by these authors are not original, for the idea that aquatic organisms can be useful "indicators" of environmental conditions, and particularly of the degree of pollution of water with organic wastes, has a long history (12). Because of certain novel features and the relatively wide scope of the studies, and the …

Some Remarks On A Paper Of Aronszajn And Panitchpakdi, Melvin Henriksen Jan 1957

Some Remarks On A Paper Of Aronszajn And Panitchpakdi, Melvin Henriksen

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In the paper of the title [1], a number of problems are posed. Negative solutions of two of them (Problems 2 and 3) are derived in a straightforward way from a paper of L. Gillman and the present author [2]. Motivation will not be supplied since it is given amply in [1], but enough definitions are given to keep the presentation reasonably self contained.

On Minimal Completely Regular Spaces Associated With A Given Ring Of Continuous Functions, Melvin Henriksen Jan 1957

On Minimal Completely Regular Spaces Associated With A Given Ring Of Continuous Functions, Melvin Henriksen

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Let C(X) denote the ring of all continuous real-valued functions on a completely regular space X. If X and Y are completely regular spaces such that one is dense in the other, say X is dense in Y, and every f ε C(X) has a (unique) extension f E C(Y), then C(X) and C(Y) are said to be strictly isomorphic. In a recent paper [2], L. J. Heider asks if it is possible to associate with the completely regular space X a dense subspace μX minimal with respect to the property that C(μX) and C(X) are strictly isomorphic.

Specificity Of The London-Eisenschitz Wang Force*, Jerrold M. Yos, William L. Bade, Herbert Jehle Jan 1957

Specificity Of The London-Eisenschitz Wang Force*, Jerrold M. Yos, William L. Bade, Herbert Jehle

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The London force between macromolecules immersed in a liquid medium has an interesting property which may be of biological significance. For the purpose of formulating the London interaction, one may represent each macromolecule by a set of electric dipole oscillators of specified polarizability, frequency, and orientation. To consider the simplest case, one may study macromolecules of globular form not in direct contact with each other. (They might be separated by Debyeiuckel- Onsager atmospheres made up of molecules from the medium; then the equilibrium distance between the macromolecules would be regulated by concentration changes in the ionic medium.)' Such a geometrical …

Specificity Of Intermolecular Forces Due To Quantummechanical And Thermal Charge Fluctuations*, Herbert Jehle Jan 1957

Specificity Of Intermolecular Forces Due To Quantummechanical And Thermal Charge Fluctuations*, Herbert Jehle

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The preceding note1 (Paper I) developed the theory of the specificity of some intermolecular forces: the forces due to fluctuations of electric charge distribution in and over the interacting molecules. It was found that for a mixture of molecules in a liquid medium these forces cause a rearrangement of the molecules, so that molecules which have the same distribution of oscillator polarizabilities and oscillator orientations over the frequency spectrum tend to associate. This means that like molecules tend to become nearest neighbors. For that reason it was said that there is specific attraction between identical molecules.

Velocity And Friction Characteristics Of Laminar Viscous Boundry-Layer And Channel Flow Over Surfaces With Ejection Or Suction, E. R. G. Eckert, Patrick L. Donoughe, Betty Jo Moore Jan 1957

Velocity And Friction Characteristics Of Laminar Viscous Boundry-Layer And Channel Flow Over Surfaces With Ejection Or Suction, E. R. G. Eckert, Patrick L. Donoughe, Betty Jo Moore

Armstead Publications and Presentations

National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics Technical Note 4102

Information collected from the referenced literature and supplemented by new solutions is presented on the flow characteristics - velocity field, pressure drop, and friction - for steady, fully developed laminar flow through a duct consisting of two parallel walls, for flow through tubes with circular cross section, and for boundary-layer flow over infinite wedges. It is assumed that the fluid either is ejected through the porous walls into the main flow or is removed from the main flow by suction. The properties of the fluid both in the main flow and in …
