The Effects Of Electron-Donating And Electron-Withdrawing Groups On The Alkylation Sites Of Para-Substituted Phenylacetones, Abraham L. Faburada

The dianions of phenylacetone and its para-substituted derivatives were generated using potassium hydride and n-butyl lithium in tetrahydrofuran. Methyl, ethyl, and n-butyl iodides were used to alkylate the dianions. The results of alkulation indicated that C₁ is preferentially attacked by the less active ethyl and n-butyl iodides. The results further show that terminal alkylation is enhanced by electron-donating groups at the para-position of the phenyl ring. The results are rationalized in terms of the difference in electron density at C₁ and at C₃ in the dianion, on the basis of resonance theory. The regio-selectivity of alkylation as …

The present investigation examines seasonal variations of algal assemblages in a south-central reservoir, Lake Fayetteville, Arkansas, in an attempt to evaluate the role of various trace metals in relation to these seasonal variations. Iron, manganese, cobalt, copper, lead and zinc concentrations were evaluated for the period of one year from March, 1976 to March, 1977 with concomitant examination of alga] assemblages. In addition to collection of this material, correlations between specific taxa and metals in the water fraction have been evaluated. We derive a new form for the matrix element of the two-particle mutual spin-orbit interaction in the Breit-Pauli approximation. The complexity of standard tensor-operator expansion techniques is obviated by suitably decomposing the mutual spin-orbit interaction into products of spin and orbital angular-momentum operators, whose matrix elements in the lm_ism_s scheme are obtained in a straightforward manner. Graphical representations are given for both the one- and two-particle spin-orbit interactions, thereby permitting the analytical evaluation by graphical techniques of the spin-orbit interaction between arbitrary configurations in any coupling scheme. Esr And Spin-Lattice Relaxation Of Nd3+ In A Metallic Host: Larh2, S. A, Dodds, Jeff Sanny, R. Orbach

We report the first ESR observation of Nd³⁺ in a metal: cubic LaRh₂. The resonance arises from a Γ₆ ground state and exhibits hyperfine splitting at low temperature, allowing for positive identification. Above about 12 K, the ESR linewidth increases exponentially with temperature. We attribute this increase to the resonance phonon relaxation process involving the first excited state at 125±10 K.

Ionization measurements as a function of concentration and pressure have been made in nitrogen and nitrogen-sulfur hexafluoride gas mixtures containing either cyclopropane, ethylene, propylene, acetylene, ethane, or impurity. These studies have been made to understanding of the gas kinetics involved propane as contribute in nitrogen an to the and nitrogen-sulfur hexafluoride laser systems. Impurity gases were chosen on the basis of their ionization potentials relative to the C³π_u state in nitrogen that is responsible for the lasing action. Analysis of the data indicated that a Jesse effect exists for those impurity gases whose ionization potentials lie below …

The rate of reduction of [Co(dipy)₃]³⁺ by [Co(tripy)₂]²⁺ has been examined in six nonaqueous solvents and water. The kinetic results in these solvents were compared with those obtained in nine other solvents where the same reaction was investigated. Activation parameters were obtained over a temperature range of 5° to 50°C with the ionic strength at 0.0027 or 0.0046 M. The slowest rate of electron transfer was found in acetonitrile while the fastest occurred in acetophenone, the solvent of lowest dielectric constant. An Assessment Of The Transmission Electron Microscope For The Study Of Aerosol-Gas Interactions: Direct Observations Of Sodium Chloride Hydration Phenomena, Antony David Clarke

An experimental study of solid-gas interactions was made for sodium chloride particles, using a specially fabricated environmental chamber in a transmission electron microscope. It was found that under suitable conditions the hydration and dehydration of these particles could be directly observed and quantitatively measured. Measurements of growth were obtained with a time resolution of one-thirtieth of a second for particles having diameters ranging from 0.02 μm to 1.0 μm.

The Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 call for the restoration and maintenance of the chemical, physical and biological integrity of the Nation's waters. The Act sets forth two primary goals; 1) the elimination of the discharge of all pollutants into the navigable waters of the United States by 1985 and 2) an interim level of water quality that provides for the protection of fish, shellfish, wildlife and recreation by July 1, 1983. Section 208 of the Act mandated the development and implementation of area wide water quality management plans to achieve the goals previously mentioned.
