The Use Of Kamke's Transformation In Approximating The Zeros Of Orthogonal Polynomials, Robert L. Daniels
The Use Of Kamke's Transformation In Approximating The Zeros Of Orthogonal Polynomials, Robert L. Daniels
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
The importance of the classical orthogonal polynomials has long been acknowledged. It has not been possible, however, to represent them in such a way that all of their important properties are immediately evident. In particular, the location of the zeros of these polynomials is of considerable interest.
This thesis is primarily concerned with a different technique in which Kamke's transformation is applied to the differential equations frequently used to define these polynomials. The resulting trigonometric differential equations cannot be explicitly solved either, but certain characteristics of these solutions facilitate the derivation of approximations to the zeroes of the solutions.
Geology Of The Canjilon Cauldron Sink Near Bernalillo, Sandoval County, New Mexico, Felix E. Mutschler
Geology Of The Canjilon Cauldron Sink Near Bernalillo, Sandoval County, New Mexico, Felix E. Mutschler
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Canjilon Hill is located on the west side of the Rio Grande, about 2 3/4 miles north-northwest of Bernalillo. Exposed on the hill is a local unit of breccia, conglomerate, and sandstone, which forms an elongate saucer-shaped body 4100 feet long, 2200 feet wide and 280 to 500+ feet thick. Unlike the underlying Santa Fe formation these strata contain an abundance of large angular basalt pebbles, cobbles, and boulders. In this paper these strata are termed the Canjilon formation of the Santa Fe group. Structural and sedimentological evidence suggest that the Canjilon formation was deposited in a subsidence depression initiated …

The Motion Of A Charged Particle In Homogenous Time-Varying Magnetic Field, Thomas R. Bates
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
This paper will discuss the motion of a non-relativistic, non-radiating charged particle in an infinite homogeneous magnetic field which varies linearly with time. We shall assume the motion to be confined to a plane perpendicular to the magnetic field.
An Indicator Of Position With Respect To The Earth's Magnetic Field, Lloyd C. Nielsen
An Indicator Of Position With Respect To The Earth's Magnetic Field, Lloyd C. Nielsen
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
A large amount of experimental research in the field of atmospheric physics involves carrying apparatus aloft by means of balloons. Data from balloon-borne instruments may be obtained either by recovery of the apparatus or by radio telemetering during the flight. Of these two methods, the latter is of course the more convenient and reliable, since recovery of the apparatus is time-consuming and often impossible.

Calorimetric Heats Of Mixing Of Some Nonelectrolytic Binary And Ternary Solutions, James Bevan Ott
Calorimetric Heats Of Mixing Of Some Nonelectrolytic Binary And Ternary Solutions, James Bevan Ott
Theses and Dissertations
The heat of mixing of nonelectrolytic liquids is important in predicting the type of molecular interactions which exist in solutions of nonelectrolyted. The problem was to construct a calorimeter in which these heats of mixing could be measured accurately. Once constructed, the calorimeter was used to measure the heats of mixing of some binary and a ternary solutions. The systems chosen for study were the three liquid pairs formed between benzane, carbon tetrachloride, and cyclohexane, and the ternary mixture of the three. The results of the experimentation are summarized by the following equations. (1) H_12^M = X_1x_2 [103.2 + 13.1(x_1 …
The Instability Of Folded Structures, Robert Del Mar
The Instability Of Folded Structures, Robert Del Mar
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Folded structures are not necessarily stable through geologic time. "Unfolding" is defined as the changes in attitude through with folded structures go subsequent to their creation by tectonic means, other than by faulting alone. The principal types of unfolding, together with their causes, are: (1) the effect of gravity on isolated structures, and the effects of loading and unloading insofar as the gravitational force is concerned; (2) basining action and its effect on unloading; (3) the action of vertical forces on folded structures; (4) migrating or "wave" folds in relation to unfolding.

Growth And Nutrition Of Plants As Affected By Different Osmotic Concentrations Of Calcium Chloride And Sodium Chloride In The Substrate, Mumtaz Ali Khan
Growth And Nutrition Of Plants As Affected By Different Osmotic Concentrations Of Calcium Chloride And Sodium Chloride In The Substrate, Mumtaz Ali Khan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Considerable experimental evidence supports the concept that the growth of plants generally decreases progressively as the salt concentration of the substrate increases, but certain relationships between plant and substrate are still not fully understood. The chemistry of salt toxicity to plants involves many interactions both as to the quantity and kind of ions presented to the roots and those accumulated in the plants. Many plant species have shown sensitivity to excess accumulation of specific salts frequently encountered in saline soils. Thus Eaton (1942), Wadleigh, Hayward, and Ayers (1951) have shown most of the fruit trees to be susceptible to injury …
The Thermodynamics And Some Practical Aspects Of Zinc Adsorption On Calcite, Dolomite, And Calcian-Magnesite Minerals, Jerome J. Jurinak
The Thermodynamics And Some Practical Aspects Of Zinc Adsorption On Calcite, Dolomite, And Calcian-Magnesite Minerals, Jerome J. Jurinak
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Zinc is one of the essential elements required for the normal growth of plants. The total amount of zinc commonly occurring in soils is usually many times greater than that necessary to supply the needs of actively growing plants. The ability of the soil to "fix" zinc in form unavailable for plant use, however, has made the zinc deficiency disease an important plant nutrition problem in the major fruit and nut growing regions of the West. Fixation mechanisms which have been postulated as contributing to zinc deficiency include organic complexes, precipitation of insoluble inorganic salts, and strong zinc-clay intersections. It …

On Rings Of Bounded Continuous Functions With Values In A Division Ring, Ellen Correl, Melvin Henriksen
On Rings Of Bounded Continuous Functions With Values In A Division Ring, Ellen Correl, Melvin Henriksen
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
Let C*(X, A) denote the ring of bounded continuous functions on a (Hausdorff) topological space X with values in a topological division ring A. If, for every maximal (two-sided) ideal M of C*(X, A), we have C*(X, A)/M is isomorphic with A, we say that Stone's theorem holds for C*(X, A). It is well known [9; 6] that Stone's theorem holds for C*(X, A) if A is locally compact and connected, or a finite field. In giving a partial answer to a question of Kaplansky [7], Goldhaber and Wolk showed in [5] that, with restriction on X, and if A …

Coprecipitation Of The Transuranium Elements With The Rare Earths Coprecipitation Of Americium With Lanthanum Oxalate, John A. Hermann
Coprecipitation Of The Transuranium Elements With The Rare Earths Coprecipitation Of Americium With Lanthanum Oxalate, John A. Hermann
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Coprecipitation is a process whereby a substance soluble by itself is "carried" with an insoluble crystalline precipitate. As used here, coprecipitation applies to the "carrying" of a tracer by a precipitate formed in the presence of the tracer. The phenomenon is important in analytical chemistry1, in the problem of impurities in precipitates; in radiochemistry2,3, in the separation of radioactive tracers originally present in very low concentrations; and in general, whenever a solid is separated from its mother liquid by precipitation.
