Generalized Ellipsometry Based On Azimuth Measurements Alone, R. M.A. Azzam Apr 1978

Generalized Ellipsometry Based On Azimuth Measurements Alone, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

We investigate the azimuth response function, θo = f(θi), of a linear nondepolarizing optical system S, whereθi and θo, are the azimuths (orientations) of the generally elliptic vibrations of totally polarized light at the input and output of S. We find that the azimuth response function depends on five of the six parameters that specify the normalized circular Jones matrix of the optical system. Thus the entire polarization response of an optical system can be nearly completely reconstructed from its azimuth response alone. Five input-output azimuth measurements (θik, θok), k …

Simulation Of Mechanical Rotation By Optical Rotation: Application To The Design Of A New Fourier Photopolarimeter, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The mechanical rotation of an optical element around the axis of a beam of polarized light can be easily simulated by using the phenomenon of optical rotation. Because optical rotation can be magnetically or electrically induced, virtually any kind of mechanical rotation can be mimicked. This interesting principle is applied to the design of a new Fourier photopolarimeter that uses an oscillating-azimuth retarder (OAR). The OAR consists of a quarter-wave plate surrounded by two ac-excited Faraday cells that produce equal and opposite sinusoidal optical rotations. Analysis of the operation of this polarimeter of no moving parts proves its ability to …

On Combinational Networks With Restricted Fan-Out, K. L. Kodandapani, Sharad C. Seth Apr 1978

On Combinational Networks With Restricted Fan-Out, K. L. Kodandapani, Sharad C. Seth

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Fan-out-free networks of AND, OR, NOT, EXOR, and MAJORITY gates are considered. Boolean functions for which such networks exist are defined to be fan-out free. The paper solves the following problems regarding the fan-out-free networks and functions.
1) Characterization of the class of fan-out-free functions: The characterization given is constructive in the sense that if a given function is fan-out free one obtains a fan-out-free network to realize it.
2) Counting the class of fan-out-free functions: After establishing a correspondence between a fan-out-free function and a normalized network realizing it, a series of formulas are developed to count distinct normal …

The Mining Of Coal In Bristol, Rhode Island: Potential Methodology, Impacts, And Evaluation Of Community Response, Norman Kahn Apr 1978

The Mining Of Coal In Bristol, Rhode Island: Potential Methodology, Impacts, And Evaluation Of Community Response, Norman Kahn

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This report addresses the potential commercial mining of coal in the coastal community of Bristol, Rhode Island, with respect to methodology and community response. The attitude of the local community towards any mining proposal will greatly influence the course of development of the resource. In addition, maximum community participation is mandated by both Federal and State law (NEPA and the Rhode Island Coastal Zone Management Act, respectively) (7, 8). It is to be expected that the character of the response will be mediated to a great degree by the expected impacts of the mining operation. For this reason, the methods of …

Science In The Sea-Can The Scientists Endure 200 Mile Jurisdiction?: A Case Study Of The R/V Trident 1973-1975, Barbara Ray Apr 1978

Science In The Sea-Can The Scientists Endure 200 Mile Jurisdiction?: A Case Study Of The R/V Trident 1973-1975, Barbara Ray

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Before the 1958 Continental Shelf Convention scientists were free to do their research anywhere in the oceans except within a narrow band of territorial waters. Since that time national jurisdiction has closed off increasing amounts of the sea. Most coastal areas and continental shelf areas now require coastal state consent prior to commencing work. Possible reasons for this closure include 1) fear of natural resource exploitation, 2) fear of military exploitation, or 3) growing feelings of nationalism among the developing countries. This paper is divided into two parts. The first deals at length with the development of the issue of …

A Technique In Stability Theory Of Delay-Differential Equations, S. Leela, V. Lakshmikantham Apr 1978

A Technique In Stability Theory Of Delay-Differential Equations, S. Leela, V. Lakshmikantham

Mathematics Technical Papers

In the study of stability theory for delay-differential equations using Lyapunov functions and the theory of differential inequalities, it becomes necessary to choose an appropriate minimal class of functions relative to which the derivative of the Lyapunov function is estimated. This approach has recently been recognized as a very natural method in the study of the qualitative behavior of delay equations.

Shallow Water High-Magnesium Calcite Mud Production And Dispersal, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Jonathan A. Fuller Apr 1978

Shallow Water High-Magnesium Calcite Mud Production And Dispersal, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Jonathan A. Fuller

Masters Theses

Boiler Bay, on the northeast coast of St. Croix, is 200 m wide, 800 m long, and about 3-5 m. deep. The hay is separated from the open Caribbean by a barrier reef. Winds from the east drive currents westward across a narrow carbonate platform (where they entrain platform-derived carbonate mud) and into the east end of the bay. Longshore currents continue westward through the bay, and the entrained platform- derived suspended load is combined with bay-produced carbonate mud and swept northwestward off the platform after passing through a 6 km complex of bays along the northeastern shore. The suspended …

Non-Splitting Unitary Perfect Polynomials Over Gf(P), 7≤P≤19, Mickie Sue Harbin

Mathematics Technical Papers

Examples are given of non-splitting unitary perfect polynomials over [see pdf for notation] for [see pdf for notation]. These, together with previous results, establish the existence of infinitely many such polynomials over [see pdf for notation] for each [see pdf for notation]. The given result further supports the conjecture that non-splitting unitary perfect polynomials exist over [see pdf for notation] for each, [see pdf for notation].

Improving On The Contingent Fee, Kevin M. Clermont, John D. Currivan Apr 1978

Improving On The Contingent Fee, Kevin M. Clermont, John D. Currivan

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Two basic fees--contingent and hourly--dominate the variety of fees that lawyers charge clients for pursuing damage claims. Each of these two types has its advantages; each is plagued with substantial disadvantages. This Article proposes a new type of fee, one that preserves the respective advantages of the two present fees while minimizing their distinct disadvantages.

In essence, the proposed fee calls for the payment, on a contingent basis, of an amount computed by adding one component tied to hours worked and another component linked to amount recovered. The preferability and feasibility of this proposed fee argue for the abolishment, or …

The Photosynthetic Action Spectra Of The Phytoplankton And Their Role In Governing Spatial And Temporal Distribution: A Numerical Modeling Approach, William Morrow Willis

OES Theses and Dissertations

In the present study a numerical modeling approach is employed to examine the role of division spedific differences in photosynthetic action spectra in governing the relative size of diatom and dinoflagellate carbon synthesis along various marine light regime gradients. A radiative transfer model taking into account both Rayleigh and Mie atmospheric optical properties is employed to define the light regime incident on the sea surface. The hydrospheric light regime is defined by an exponential decay model with a correction for diffuse back scatter. Taken together, the atmospheric and hydrospheric models define the spectral composition and intensity of light in the …

The Response Of An Idealized Continental Shelf To Atmospheric Forcing, Paul Francis Moersdorf Apr 1978

The Response Of An Idealized Continental Shelf To Atmospheric Forcing, Paul Francis Moersdorf

OES Theses and Dissertations

The response of continental shelf water to cooling and wind stress is investigated using a two-dimensional numerical model. The topography of the east coast continental shelf was idealized by connecting a shallow (50 m) rectangular nearshore basin to a deeper (100 m) rectangular offshore basin. Numerous cases were examined using a wide range of values for both the air•sea temperature difference and the Wind speed, although the direction of the wind was always perpendicular to the coast.

The model predicts large excursions of shelf water offshore, and the subsequent surfacing of lower waters. Upwelling velocities of close to five meters …

Laboratory conditions of 25°c, 25°/oo, and 14.5 hour photoperiod per day were maintained for all breeding attempts, Under these conditions interspecific hybridization of Palaemonetes pugio and P. vulgaris was not feasible. P. intermedius could not be hybridized with P. pugio and P. vulgaris. At 40 days of age P. pugio juveniles were significantly larger than P. vulgaris juveniles of …

Tip-Angle-Dependent Magnetic Relaxation In Superfluid 3he, Richard A. Webb Mar 1978

Tip-Angle-Dependent Magnetic Relaxation In Superfluid 3he, Richard A. Webb

Faculty Publications

Using a pulsed superconducting-quantum-interference-device (SQUID) NMR technique, relaxation of the longitudinal magnetization in superfluid 3He has been measured in magnetic fields of 31, 102, 180, and 306 Oe in the pressure range 16-26 bar. It is observed that in both superfluid phases there is a temperature-dependent, well-defined spin-tipping angle, θc, for which the relaxation of the magnetization changes from an exponential to a nonexponential behavior.

The Service issues a final rulemaking which provides for the reclassification of the gray wolf in the United States and Mexico, and for the determination of critical habitat for species of gray wolf in Michigan and Minnesota. The reclassification is considered to accurately express the current status of the gray wolf, based solely on an evaluation of the best available biological data. The special regulations being established in Minnesota are deemed necessary and advisable to provide for the future well-being of the species. Although an increased legal take of wolves committing depredations on domestic animals will be authorized, this take …

Experimental Permeability Studies At Elevated Temperature And Pressure Of Granitic Rocks, Jared Michael Potter Mar 1978

Experimental Permeability Studies At Elevated Temperature And Pressure Of Granitic Rocks, Jared Michael Potter

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Permeability of quartz monzonite from the Los Alamos hot-dry-rock geothermal well GT-2 was experimentally measured as a function of pressure and temperature. Permeability apparatus slightly modified from that developed by Brace and others (1968) was used in the experiments. Flow rate through the sample was measured using a transient pressure decay method. When combined with the physical characteristics of the sample and several system parameters, this flow rate yielded permeability (k). Permeability of the GT-2 rocks from depths of 8580 ft and 9522 ft behaves like Westerly granite for changes in effective confining pressure. However permeability of these rocks behaves …

Magnetic Ordering And Local Random Anisotropy In Dilute Magnetic Glasses, G.R. Gruzalski, J.D. Patterson, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Magnetic susceptibility and high-field magnetization measurements are presented for amorphous Zr40Cu60-xMx (M denoting Fe, Mn, Gd, and Tb) and Nb50Ni50-xFex, with x ranging from zero to about ten. The alloys for M=Gd, Tb, and Fe develop low-temperature ordered states that are characterized as spin glass like, whereas the Mn alloy exhibits no evidence of order down to 1.3 K. The magnetic properties of these alloys are discussed in terms of local random anisotropy, fluctuations in the interimpurity exchange interactions, extremely short electron-mean-free paths, antiferromagnetic interactions between the …
