Wax has been extracted from pest formations in Europe and especially in Britain. However, little or no work have been done in the United States.

The increased demand for waxes and the limited supply of domestic origin has made the study of the sources and characteristics of domestic waxes desirable. Extensive work have been done with montan wax, which is similar to peat wax, in the United States.

The object of this research is to establish a suitable process for extraction of wax from pest material, and to determine the chemical and physical nature of the wax. The process may …

Otosclerosis is a frequent affliction resulting in progressive hearing loss. With the advance of ear surgery during the past 25 years various procedures have been proposed for the correction of this condition. Among their number surgical mobilization of the stapes has assumed considerable importance. In this paper, which is presented as a thesis to fulfill the requirements for the degree of Master of Science, the operation will be discussed on the basis of the literature and the author's own experiences with the procedure.

"The transport of heat in solids is attributed to the combined effect of the quantized vibrations of lattice points, or phonons, and the flow of valence electrons. In dielectric solids, the thermal conductivity is due almost entirely to phonons, while in metals the latter method preponderates. Scattering processes in dielectric solids, giving rise to thermal resistance, also serve to limit the thermal conductivity. Scattering results from vacancies, dislocations, interstitial atoms and phonon interaction. Crystal boundaries also function as scattering points and in crystals of small dimensions, this process is the most pronounced conductivity-limiting factor. Washington County, Missouri contains a limited number of outcrops of pre-Cambrian igneous rocks, the majority of which are in the extreme southern part of the county. The known association of lead ore with buried or partially buried pre-Cambrian igneous knobs and ridges in this part of Missouri has led the St. Joseph Lead Company to prospect in areas known to contain these features. One of the essential duties of the State of California Department of Civil Defense in times of nuclear weapon attack will be radiological monitoring. The workers in this field will operate from a mobile laboratory truck, equipped with radiation counters and meters, but containing only the simplest of chemical equipment. One of their main problems will be the determination of the total amount of radioactive material, especially fallout of fission products, in a water sample. "The transport of heat in dielectric solids is attributed entirely to lattice waves whereas in metals there is in addition a transfer by the flow of valence electrons. The thermal conductivity of a non-electrical-conductor is limited by a number of scattering processes giving rise to thermal resistances. Scattering results from impurity atoms and from vacancies and dislocations within the crystal structure and from the interaction of the lattice vibrations amongst themselves. Scattering also occurs at the boundaries of the crystal. The thermal resistance of an ideal crystal at low temperatures is due almost entirely to boundary scattering and at high …

The study consists of an investigation of the variation in the temperature of formation of sphalerite on the 500 and 1500 ft levels of the Balmat zinc deposit at Balmat, New York. A subsidiary investigation was performed on the use of x-ray fluorescence as a means of chemical quantitative analysis. Twelve samples of sphalerite from the 500 ft level and 13 samples from the 1500 ft level were analyzed for atomic percent iron content by measuring Zn/Fe x-ray fluorescent ratios. The search for the carcinogenic factor present in crude oil tar fractions was begun around 1915. With the observation that the high-boiling, most carcinogenic fractions exhibited fluorescence spectra similar to those of many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, several synthetic hydrocarbons were tested (1) on mice by skin painting techniques. Tumors were produced by 1,2,5,6-dibenzanthracene (I), 3'-methyl-1,2,5,6-dibenzanthracene (II) and 6-isopropyl-1,2-benzanthracene (III). One of the most widely used synthetic hydrocarbon carcinogens at the present is 1,2,5,6-dibenzanthracene.

Simple amides are neutral compounds with infrared absorptions characterized by a strong carbonyl absorption. N-H absorptions, and other less significant and unassigned absorptions. Lack of basic nature of amides has been attributed to strong resonance of the unshared pair of electrons on nitrogen with the C=O double bond. This stabilized the molecule to an extent not possible when the electron pair on nitrogen is protonated, since resonance stabilization of such an ammonium structure is no longer possible.

Acidic properties of dialyzed alumina and representative clay minerals were studied by performing titrations with various bases. For the first group of experiments the titrations were made in a water system using KOH and NaOH. For this study in a water system the experimental data includes individual cationic activities as well as pH values. Adsorption of the cations was adequately described over a pH range of 5-11 by the equation 1-θ/θ ⋅ aNa+ ⋅ aOH- = 1/K'3 [aOH- + KW/K'2 + 1/K'1], in which θ represents the fraction of the total sites that have reacted.
