Objectives: The objective of this study was to characterize the effect of rifampin incorporation into poly(methyl methacrylate) (pMMA) bone cement. While incompatibilities between the two materials have been previously noted, we sought to identify and quantify the cause of rifampin's effects, including alterations in curing properties, mechanical strength, and residual monomer content.

Methods: Four cement groups were prepared using commercial pMMA bone cement: a control; one with 1 g of rifampin; and one each with equimolar amounts of ascorbic acid or hydroquinone relative to the amount of rifampin added. The handling properties, setting time, exothermic output, and monomer loss were …

We analyze the impact of a proposed tidal instability coupling p modes and g modes within neutron stars on GW170817. This nonresonant instability transfers energy from the orbit of the binary to internal modes of the stars, accelerating the gravitational-wave driven inspiral. We model the impact of this instability on the phasing of the gravitational wave signal using three parameters per star: An overall amplitude, a saturation frequency, and a spectral index. Incorporating these additional parameters, we compute the Bayes factor (ln Bpg!pg) comparing our p-g model to a standard one. We find that the observed signal …

The magnetic-field-tuned quantum superconductor-insulator transitions of disordered amorphous indium oxide films are a paradigm in the study of quantum phase transitions and exhibit power-law scaling behavior. For superconducting indium oxide films with low disorder, such as the ones reported on here, the high-field state appears to be a quantum-corrected metal. Resistance data across the superconductor-metal transition in these films are shown here to obey an activated scaling form appropriate to a quantum phase transition controlled by an infinite-randomness fixed point in the universality class of the random transverse-field Ising model. Collapse of the field-dependent resistance vs temperature data is obtained …

We report here triply differential cross sections (TDCSs) for 81 eV electron and positron-impact ionization of the combined (1b1 + 3a1 ) orbitals of the water molecule by using the second-order distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA2) for ejection electron and positron energies of 5 eV and 10 eV and different momentum transfer conditions. The electron-impact TDCS will be compared with the experimental data measured by Ren et al. [Phys. Rev. A 95, 022701 (2017)] and with the molecular 3-body distorted wave (M3DW) approximation results in the scattering plane as well as the perpendicular plane. The DWBA2 results are …

Parlech: Parallel Long-Read Error Correction With Hadoop, Arghya Kusum Das, Kisung Lee, Seung Jong Park

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Long-read sequencing is emerging as a promising sequencing technology because it can tackle the short length limitation of second-generation sequencing, which has dominated the sequencing market in past years. However, it has substantially higher error rates compared to short-read sequencing (e.g., 13% vs. 0.1%), and its sequencing cost per base is typically more expensive than that of short-read sequencing. To address these limitations, we present a distributed hybrid error correction framework, called ParLECH, that is scalable and cost-efficient for PacBio long reads. For correcting the errors in the long reads, ParLECH utilizes the Illumina short reads that have the low …

Examination Of The Structures, Energetics, And Vibrational Frequencies Of Small Sulfur-Containing Prototypical Dimers, (H2s)2 And H2o/H2s, Katelyn M. Dreux, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The optimized geometries, vibrational frequencies, and dissociation energies from MP2 and CCSD(T) computations with large correlation consistent basis sets are reported for (H2S)2 and H2O/H2S. Anharmonic vibrational frequencies have also been computed with second-order vibrational perturbation theory (VPT2). As such, the fundamental frequencies, overtones, and combination bands reported in this study should also provide a useful road map for future spectroscopic studies of the simple but important heterogeneous H2O/H2S dimer in which the hydrogen bond donor and acceptor can interchange, leading to two unique minima with very similar energies. …

A Second Order Bdf Numerical Scheme With Variable Steps For The Cahn-Hilliard Equation, Wenbin Chen, Xiaoming Wang, Yue Yan, Zhuying Zhang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present and analyze a second order in time variable step BDF2 numerical scheme for the Cahn-Hilliard equation. the construction relies on a second order backward difference, convex-splitting technique and viscous regularizing at the discrete level. We show that the scheme is unconditionally stable and uniquely solvable. in addition, under mild restriction on the ratio of adjacent time-steps, an optimal second order in time convergence rate is established. the proof involves a novel generalized discrete Gronwall-type inequality. as far as we know, this is the first rigorous proof of second order convergence for a variable step BDF2 scheme, even in …

Exploration For Alteration Halos Around The Ag-W Deposits In Southeastern Missouri, Usa, Daniel Joseph Warbritton

Masters Theses

"The St. Francois Mountains in SE Missouri are an extensive terrane of granitic ring complexes and associated rhyolites. They were an important source of Ag, W, and Sn and mined intermittently from the 1800s until the 1950s. The Ag-W ores occur in the Silvermine Granite and rhyolite roof rocks. The deposits are classified as a xenothermal ore system with mineralization occurring in quartz veins and surrounding greisen (up to 2.5 m). Exploration for hydrothermal ore deposits often focuses on the identification of alteration halos in the surrounding host rocks. In the vast majority of xenothermal ore deposits, such as in …

Modelling And Evaluation Of Electrical Resonance Eddy Current For Submillimeter Defect Detection, Yew San Hor, Vinod K. Sivaraja, Yu Zhong, Bui V. Phuong, Christopher Lane

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Eddy current (EC) inspection is used extensively in non-destructive testing (NDT) to detect surface-breaking defects of engineering components. However, the sensitivity of conventional eddy current inspection has plateaued in recent years. The ability to detect submillimetre defects before it becomes critical would allow engineering components to remain in-service safely for longer. Typically, it is required that higher frequency EC is employed to achieve a suitable sensitivity for detection of such submillimetre defects. However, that would lead to significant electromagnetic noise affecting the sensitivity of the inspection. To overcome this issue, the electrical-resonance based eddy current method has been proposed, where …

Resonance Strengths For Kll Dielectronic Recombination Of Highly Charged Mercury Ions And Improved Empirical Z -Scaling Law, Zoltan Harman, Chintan Shah, Antonio J. Gonzalez Martinez, Ulrich D. Jentschura, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Theoretical and experimental resonance strengths for KLL dielectronic recombination (DR) into He-, Li-, Be-, and B-like mercury ions are presented, based on state-resolved DR x-ray spectra recorded at the Heidelberg electron-beam ion trap. The DR resonance strengths are experimentally extracted by normalizing them to simultaneously recorded radiative recombination signals. The results are compared to state-of-the-art atomic calculations that include relativistic electron correlation and configuration mixing effects. Combining the present data with other existing ones, we derive an improved semiempirical Z-scaling law for DR resonance strengths as a function of the atomic number, taking into account higher-order relativistic corrections, which are …

On August 17, 2017, the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo gravitational-wave detectors observed a low-mass compact binary inspiral. The initial sky localization of the source of the gravitational-wave signal, GW170817, allowed electromagnetic observatories to identify NGC 4993 as the host galaxy. In this work, we improve initial estimates of the binary's properties, including component masses, spins, and tidal parameters, using the known source location, improved modeling, and recalibrated Virgo data. We extend the range of gravitational-wave frequencies considered down to 23 Hz, compared to 30 Hz in the initial analysis. We also compare results inferred using several signal models, which …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A self-consistent two-gap γ-model is used to quantitatively describe several thermodynamic properties of MgB2 superconductor. The superconducting coupling matrix, vij, was obtained from the fitting of the superfluid density in the entire superconducting temperature range. Using this input, temperature-dependent superconducting gaps, specific heat, and upper critical fields were calculated with no adjustable parameters and compared with the experimental data as well as with the first-principles calculations. The observed agreement between fit and data shows that γ-model provides adequate quantitative description of the two-gap superconductivity in MgB2 and may serve as a relatively simple and versatile self-consistent description of …

Controlled Switching In Kalman Filtering And Iterative Learning Controls, He Li Jan 2019

Controlled Switching In Kalman Filtering And Iterative Learning Controls, He Li

Masters Theses

“Switching is not an uncommon phenomenon in practical systems and processes, for examples, power switches opening and closing, transmissions lifting from low gear to high gear, and air planes crossing different layers in air. Switching can be a disaster to a system since frequent switching between two asymptotically stable subsystems may result in unstable dynamics. On the contrary, switching can be a benefit to a system since controlled switching is sometimes imposed by the designers to achieve desired performance. This encourages the study of system dynamics and performance when undesired switching occurs or controlled switching is imposed. In this research, …

Pressure Versus Impulse Graph For Blast-Induced Traumatic Brain Injury And Correlation To Observable Blast Injuries, Barbara Rutter Jan 2019

Pressure Versus Impulse Graph For Blast-Induced Traumatic Brain Injury And Correlation To Observable Blast Injuries, Barbara Rutter

Doctoral Dissertations

"With the increased use of explosive devices in combat, blast induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) has become one of the signature wounds in current conflicts. Animal studies have been conducted to understand the mechanisms in the brain and a pressure versus time graph has been produced. However, the role of impulse in bTBIs has not been thoroughly investigated for animals or human beings.

This research proposes a new method of presenting bTBI data by using a pressure versus impulse (P-I) graph. P-I graphs have been found useful in presenting lung lethality regions and building damage thresholds. To present the animal …

First-principles treatments of quantum molecular reaction dynamics have reached the level of quantitative accuracy even in cases with strong non-Born-Oppenheimer effects. This achievement permits the interpretation of puzzling experimental phenomena related to dynamics governed by multiple coupled potential energy surfaces. We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the photodissociation of formyl radical (HCO). Oscillations observed in the distribution of product states are found to arise from the interference of matter waves-a manifestation analogous to Young's double-slit experiment.

Ferrite Characterization Techniques & Particle Simulations For Semiconductor Devices, Nicholas Erickson

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation is divided into three papers, covering two major topics. The first topic, techniques for ferrite characterization, is discussed over the course of two papers. The second topic, particle simulations for semiconductor devices, is discussed in the last paper. In the first paper, the method for extracting permeability from ferrite materials is discussed for the Keysight 16454A permeability extraction fixture, where the ferrite material to be characterized is assumed to be homogeneous. Then the method is updated to account for layered materials. The updated method is verified through full-wave simulations. In the second paper, a planar printed circuit board …

Polyurea Aerogels: From Nanoscopic To Macroscopic Properties, Tahereh Taghvaee Jan 2019

Polyurea Aerogels: From Nanoscopic To Macroscopic Properties, Tahereh Taghvaee

Doctoral Dissertations

"The morphology of a material is intrinsically a qualitative property and in order to relate nanomorphology to synthetic conditions, it is necessary to express nano/micro-structure quantitatively. In this context, polyurea aerogels were chosen as a model system with demonstrated potential for rich nanomorphology and being guided by a statistical Design-of-Experiments model, a large array of materials (208) with identical chemical composition, but quite different nanostructures were prepared. By reflecting upon the SEM images, it was realized that our first pre-verbal impression about a nanostructure is related to its openness and texture; the former is quantified by porosity (Π), and the …

Decoupling Methods For The Time-Dependent Navier-Stokes-Darcy Interface Model, Changxin Qiu Jan 2019

Decoupling Methods For The Time-Dependent Navier-Stokes-Darcy Interface Model, Changxin Qiu

Doctoral Dissertations

"In this research, several decoupling methods are developed and analyzed for approximating the solution of time-dependent Navier-Stokes-Darcy (NS-Darcy) interface problems. This research on decoupling methods is motivated to efficiently solve the complex Stokes-Darcy or NS-Darcy type models, which arise from many interesting real world problems involved with or even dominated by the coupled porous media flow and free flow. We first discuss a semi-implicit, multi-step non-iterative domain decomposition (NIDDM) to solve a coupled unsteady NS-Darcy system with Beavers-Joseph-Saffman-Jones (BJSJ) interface condition and obtain optimal error estimates. Second, a parallel NIDDM is developed to solve unsteady NS-Darcy model with Beavers-Joseph (BJ) …

We present a search for prompt gamma-ray counterparts to compact binary coalescence gravitational wave (GW) candidates from Advanced LIGO's first observing run (O1). As demonstrated by the multimessenger observations of GW170817/GRB 170817A, electromagnetic and GW observations provide complementary information about the astrophysical source, and in the case of weaker candidates, may strengthen the case for an astrophysical origin. Here we investigate low-significance GW candidates from the O1 compact binary coalescence searches using the Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GBM), leveraging its all sky and broad energy coverage. Candidates are ranked and compared to background to measure the significance. Those with false …

Astrophysical sources of gravitational waves, such as binary neutron star and black hole mergers or core-collapse supernovae, can drive relativistic outflows, giving rise to non-thermal high-energy emission. High-energy neutrinos are signatures of such outflows. The detection of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from common sources could help establish the connection between the dynamics of the progenitor and the properties of the outflow. We searched for associated emission of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical transients with minimal assumptions using data from Advanced LIGO from its first observing run O1, and data from the Antares and IceCube neutrino observatories from …

The Dynamical State Of A Young Stellar Cluster, Timothy Sullivan Jan 2019

The Dynamical State Of A Young Stellar Cluster, Timothy Sullivan

Doctoral Dissertations

"The dynamical state of the young star-forming cluster Rho Ophiuchi is considered, with emphasis on the L1688 cloud. Radial velocities are derived for 32 YSOs, with some being multi-epoch, using Markov-Chain Monte Carlo routines based upon the package emcee. Sources are chosen based upon their spectral index to focus on the earlier stages of star formation, in this case, Class I and Flat spectrum objects, and compared with a sample of Class II and III objects from the same embedded cluster. It is found that the radial velocity dispersion for these younger objects is Δv = 2.8 ± 0:6 …

These propellants are also being considered for use in ablative pulsed plasma thruster and multimode systems. In this work, the behavior and performance of a novel green electric solid propellant operating in an electrothermal ablation-fed pulsed plasma thruster was investigated. Using an inverted pendulum micro-Newton thrust stand, the impulse bit and specific impulse of the device using the electric solid propellant were measured for short-duration and long-duration runs to end-of-life, at energy levels of …

Structure And Topology Of Transcriptional Regulatory Networks And Their Applications In Bio-Inspired Networking, Satyaki Roy Jan 2019

Structure And Topology Of Transcriptional Regulatory Networks And Their Applications In Bio-Inspired Networking, Satyaki Roy

Doctoral Dissertations

"Biological networks carry out vital functions necessary for sustenance despite environmental adversities. Transcriptional Regulatory Network (TRN) is one such biological network that is formed due to the interaction between proteins, called Transcription Factors (TFs), and segments of DNA, called genes. TRNs are known to exhibit functional robustness in the face of perturbation or mutation: a property that is proven to be a result of its underlying network topology. In this thesis, we first propose a three-tier topological characterization of TRN to analyze the interplay between the significant graph-theoretic properties of TRNs such as scale-free out-degree distribution, low graph density, small …

Exploring Transition Metal Chalcogenides For Bio Sensing And Environmental Remediation, Bahareh Golrokh Amin Jan 2019

Exploring Transition Metal Chalcogenides For Bio Sensing And Environmental Remediation, Bahareh Golrokh Amin

Doctoral Dissertations

“Electrocatalysts play an inevitable role in many applications including energy storage, energy conversion, and biosensing. The state-of-the-art noble metal-based electrocatalysts have long been used in full water splitting, non-enzymatic glucose sensing, and supercapacitors. However, scarcity and high cost of noble metals restrict utilization of such electrocatalysts in large-scale implementations. Transition metal-based electrodes have been considered as a potential solution to address these drawbacks as well as to enhance the electrocatalytic performance. In this work, applicability of non-oxidic transition metal based electrocatalysts is evaluated. Transition metal chalcogenides are expected to have high catalytic performance owing to their facilitated electron cloud delocalization …
