A parallel programming environment based on data flow is described. Programming in the environment involves use with an interactive graphic editor which facilitates the construction of a program graph consisting of modules, ports, paths and triggers. Parallelism is inherent since data presence allows many modules to execute concurrently. The graph is executed directly without transformation to traditional representations. The environment supports programming at a very high level as opposed to parallelism at the individual instruction level.

We have measured the concentrations of S, Se, and Te in samples of 1986 snow and compared our results with those of earlier measurements. We were unable to find any earlier reports on Te in snow, but values of the Se/S concentration ratio in 1986 are about a factor of 6 lower than that in snow and glacial ice of 800 B.C. Measurements on intermediate samples demonstrate that most of the decline in the Se/S ratio occurred during the past 200 years, i.e., since the start of the Industrial Revolution. This temporal change in values of the Se/S ratio probably …

Finite and countable topological spaces are investigated which are homogeneous, homogeneous with respect to open mappings or with respect to continuous ones. It is shown that for finite spaces all three concepts of homogeneity coincide, while for countable or for uncountable ones they are distinct. Some characterization of countable spaces that are homogeneous in either sense are found for the metric setting.

Classical-trajectory Monte Carlo calculations have been used to study ionizing collisions between charged particles (p,p»,e+,e-) and He atoms at an incident velocity of 2.83 a.u. While differences in the total single-ionization cross sections for these projectiles are small, our calculations reveal large effects at all angles in the ionized electron spectra and provide qualitative evidence for a Barkas effect in p and p» collisions. Experimental data agree well with our fully classical calculations, including cross sections involving ejected electrons of long wavelength. © 1988 The American Physical Society.

Cross sections are calculated for charge transfer into excited states of C5+ and O7+ from collisions of C6+ and O8+ with hydrogen atoms in the n=2 and 3 levels. Effective emission cross sections that account for cascading is then derived for spectral lines emitted when the product ions decay. These are compared to the emission cross sections calculated for excitation by ground-state hydrogen. It is shown that in some circumstances the contribution from excited hydrogen atoms must be taken into account when visible lines are used to determine the oxygen or carbon density from charge-exchange spectroscopy …

Studies of the self-initiated polymerization of styrene have been performed in the uniform environment of an expansion cloud chamber, using nucleation of liquid monomer drops for detection. These studies are the first of this kind in an expansion chamber and, although preliminary and designed to explore feasibility, have yielded many interesting results. The occurrence of the self-initiated nonterminated gas phase processes, previously observed in a diffusion cloud chamber, has now been confirmed in an expansion chamber. At 15 °C the initiation rate is measured to be 2 to 6 radicals cm-3 s-1 and the propagation constant is approximately 6X10-21 cm3 …

We have studied H++He and He++3+He ionizing collisions at intermediate energies (60 to 120 keV/amu) and have observed a significant shift in the velocity position of the maxima in forward-ejected electron spectra when changing projectiles from protons to particles. In ionizing collisions, a large portion of the ejected electrons are stranded near the transitory equiforce, or saddle point, position between the target ion and receding projectile. The shift in the electron spectra maxima to smaller velocities, due to changing projectiles from protons to particles, is consistent with the shift in the saddle-point velocity when the projectile …

The knowledge-based organization for the West Virginia University Face Decision Support System is given, along with the initial development of the associated inference engine. The knowledge base contains generic knowledge about underground coal mines that utilize continuous miners. A typical knowledge entry is given, and the inference engine methodology is explained. The engine utilizes this knowledge with data from monitoring systems and from interaction with the section foreman, to assist in making section management decisions and plans.

"Unification algorithms are an essential component of automated reasoning and term rewriting systems. Unification finds a set of substitutions or unifiers that, when applied to variables in two or more terms, make those terms identical or equivalent. Most systems use Robinson's unification algorithm or some variant of it. However, terms containing functions exhibiting properties such as associativity and commutativity may be made equivalent without appearing identical. Systems employing Robinson's unification algorithm must use some mechanism separate from the unification algorithm to reason with such functions. The use of executable assertions is a powerful tool with which to perform program verification, provide software fault-tolerance, and provide hardware fault-tolerance via the application-oriented paradigm. The authors show that assertions commonly used in the sequential programming environment are inadequate for the distributed parallel environment. In particular, it is shown that even design-based assertions are myopic and provide inadequate error coverage. In their place, a triad of basic metrics is proposed for certain classes of problems that, when applied beginning with the specification phase of the life cycle, produce assertions that are better suited to the parallel environment. The diffusion coefficients of small solutes can be significantly altered by the presence of association colloids such as micelles. A relationship is utilized that relates the diffusion coefficient of a solute to its partitioning or binding behavior to a micellar pseudo phase. The Taylor-Aris dispersion method was used to evaluate the diffusion coefficient of several dyes in the presence and absence of sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles. With this approach, all binding constants can be determined easily and reproducibly. The theory, experimental approach, and advantages of this technique are discussed. © 1988.

Macromolecules at the surface of a polymeric solid have considerable mobility, and the specific arrangement of functional groups of macromolecules at the surface is dictated by the environmental conditions in which the surface is placed. As demonstrated in Part II of this series of studies, the hydrophobic character of CF4 plasma‐treated Nylon 6 and poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) decay with time of water immersion, and the rate of decay can be used as a measure for the surface mobility of (substrate) polymers. The same method of using fluorine‐containing moieties introduced by CF4 plasma treatment as surface labeling is applied to investigate the influence of a thin layer of plasma polymer of methane applied onto the surface of those polymers. We have studied the detailed energy balance in collisions of 10-MeV C6+ ions with Ne. In these collisions, the Ne is multiply ionized and the C ion may emerge as either C6+ or C5+. Projectile energy loss and scattering angle for a given carbon-ion charge state were determined in a high-resolution magnetic spectrograph and were measured in coincidence with the formation of a given Ne recoil-ion charge state. The amount of energy transferred to the continuum electrons exceeds, by far, the sum of the values of the ionization potentials. © 1988 The American Physical Society.

Argon Metastable-Cadmium Dihalide Energy Transfer Collisions In A Flowing Afterglow, Christopher L. Bohler, Laird D. Schearer

The energy dependence of dissociating collisions between argon metastable atoms and cadmium dihalide molecules have been studied in a flowing afterglow apparatus. The fluorescence spectra obtained in the range of 3000-7600 Å which result from the Ar(3P2) + CdX2 interactions indicate a dominant dissociative excitation production mechanism. The emission spectra are used to narrow the uncertainty in the currently accepted values for the dissociation energy of the CdX2 molecules. The Wigner spin rule (conservation of total electronic spin) was verified for these processes as shown by the dominance of final state triplet production as compared to the virtual absence of …

Electron Loss From Helium Atoms By Collisions With Fully Stripped Ions, A. E. Wetmore, Ronald E. Olson

Electron-loss cross sections have been calculated for fully stripped ions with charge states +1 to +100 colliding with helium atoms in the energy range 100 1000 kev/amu. The classical-trajectory Monte Carlo method was used along with a model of the helium atom with two active electrons. The reactions studied were single and double ionization, single- and double-electron capture, and electron capture plus ionization. Cross sections for the single-electron-removal reactions agree well with experimental data. Double-electron-removal cross sections are in qualitative agreement with experimental results. The n-level distributions following electron capture show that the electron-capture plus ionization and double electron-capture processes …

Total cross sections for single ionization and charge transfer have been calculated using the classical-trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) technique for collisions of both positrons and protons with helium. “A major portion of the work and time involved in completing an incomplete set of reductions using an E-completion procedure such as the one described by Knuth and Bendix [KB70] or its extension to associative-commutative equational theories as described by Peterson and Stickel [PS81] is spent calculating critical pairs and subsequently testing them for coherence. First, the direct kinematics which determines the Cartesian position and orientation of the end effector for the specified values of joint parameters is analyzed. "An Integrated Programming Environment, IPE-PC, that supports pseudo-code development has been designed and implemented. This environment is based on a Pascal-like language which is designed according to the requirements of a language-based environment. The nucleus of IPE-PC is a language-based editor which represents programs as graphs internally. The same representation is used in every mode of the environment (i.e., editing, compilation, execution, debugging and translation). The effects of a glass fiber reinforcer on the properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) were evaluated. A silane coupling agent (M8550 Petrarch Systems, Inc.) was employed to promote adhesion between the materials. FTIR analysis, ESCA/Auger and SEM techniques were used to characterize the silane coating.

The mechanical properties, such as bending strength, improved with an increase in the volume percent of fiber. The addition of the M8550 silane directly into the monomer solution showed the most improvement, 23 percent increase, when compared to the uncoated glass fiber. "State-of-the-art combat simulators require a 360 degree field of view, allowing the pilot and radar intercept officer to have the same visibility in the simulator that they would experience in the aircraft. The sky/earth display must be computer - generated and displayed with a minimum of two channels to provide the most realistic display possible. The two channels of display come together in the dome, forming an equator, that must be as indiscernible to the aircrew as possible. "This paper describes an algorithm called the Deduction Tracing Algorithm (DTA) which utilizes basic properties of functional dependencies from database systems and a modification of a tree search algorithm from artificial intelligence. The algorithm takes a set of functional dependencies, F, along with a specific functional dependency L→R as input and produces a list of functional dependencies from F that can be used to deduce L→R.
