Micro Database Management System Language, Karen Yingling Tam Jan 1988

Micro Database Management System Language, Karen Yingling Tam

Masters Theses

"There are two approaches to solve computational problems in a microcomputer environment:

  1. Non-database approach: uses a high level programming language with non-database files as input and/or output files.
  2. Database approach: uses the programming language embedded in the micro Data Base Management System(DBMS), with the database defined by the integrated database definition language as input and/or output files.

Adopting the appropriate approach in any single application may save cost and time. This paper compares the two different approaches while solving the same Control Section (CSECT) Interaction Hierarchy problem and suggests which to use when"--Abstract, page ii.

Composite Graph Coloring Algorithms And Applications, Stephen Hong Seng Yek Jan 1988

Composite Graph Coloring Algorithms And Applications, Stephen Hong Seng Yek

Masters Theses

"A vertex-composite graph is a graph that can have unequal chromaticities on its vertices. Vertex-composite graph coloring or composite graph coloring involves coloring each vertex of a composite graph with consecutive colors according to the vertex's chromaticity with no two vertices adjacent to one another having the same color(s).

New heuristic algorithms including the use of the saturation degree method have been developed in this research. All eleven heuristic algorithms including Clementson and Elphick algorithms were then tested using random composite graphs with five different chromaticity distributions. The best algorithm which uses the least average colors from the experiment is …

Multilist And Inverted File System Performance Measurements, Ashok Chandramouli, George Winston Zobrist Dec 1987

Multilist And Inverted File System Performance Measurements, Ashok Chandramouli, George Winston Zobrist

Computer Science Technical Reports

This study evaluates the multilist and inverted file systems. It describes the structure of the two file system and then proceeds to investigate the performance. The performance is based on quantitative estimates of space requirements for file system, time to retrieve records, time to insert a record, time to delete a record, time to update a record and time to exhaustively read and reorganize the file system. The study then investigates specific situations in which one file system seems to perform better than the other.

Computer Science Technical Reports

This study discusses the performance parameter measurements of generic files, the pile file, the sequential file, the indexed-sequential file, the indexed file and the direct file. The file performance measurements are compiled in a software package. The study then describes the use of such software package as a simulation tool in a file design environment.

Heuristic Coloring Algorithm For The Composite Graph Coloring Problem, Johnnie C. Roberts, Billy E. Gillett Dec 1987

Heuristic Coloring Algorithm For The Composite Graph Coloring Problem, Johnnie C. Roberts, Billy E. Gillett

Computer Science Technical Reports

A composite graph is a finite undirected graph in which a positive integer known as a chromaticity is associated with each vertex of the graph. The composite graph coloring problem (CGCP) is the problem of finding the chromatic number of a composite graph, i.e., the minimum number of colors (positive integers) required to assign a sequence of consecutive colors to each vertex of the graph in a manner such that adjacent vertices are not assigned sequences with colors in common and the sequence assigned to a vertex has the number of colors indicated by the chromaticity of the vertex. The …

Ion-Ion Recombination In Mixtures Of Methane And Sulphur Hexafluoride, M. C. Cornell, Ian M. Littlewood Dec 1987

Ion-Ion Recombination In Mixtures Of Methane And Sulphur Hexafluoride, M. C. Cornell, Ian M. Littlewood

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The authors have measured the recombination rate for positive and negative ions in Sulphur hexafluoride and in mixtures of methane and Sulphur hexafluoride in an electron beam sustained discharge. Measurements were made as a function of gas composition, gas pressure in the range 100 to 600 Torr, and reduced electric field strength in the range 12 to 150 Td. When plotted as a function of an effective ion temperature, defined by the drift velocities of the ions in the applied electric field, the rates in each of the gas mixtures follow the same Teff-1.6 power law. From comparisons with theories …

Dynamics Of Multiply Charged Ion-Atom Collisions: U³²⁺+Ne, Ronald E. Olson, J. Ullrich, H. Schmidt-Bocking Dec 1987

Dynamics Of Multiply Charged Ion-Atom Collisions: U³²⁺+Ne, Ronald E. Olson, J. Ullrich, H. Schmidt-Bocking

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Measurements and calculations are presented for the mean recoil-ion energies of Nei+ produced in 1.4 MeV u-1 (0.33 GeV) collisions of U32+ with Ne. Recoil-ion charge states i=1-8 have been observed; the mean recoil energies are low and do not exceed 1 eV until i>6. Calculations employing a newly developed n-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo method are found to yield results in qualitative agreement with the recoil-ion experiment. Calculations also are presented for the ionisation and charge exchange cross sections, the projectile energy loss and the ejected-electron energy and angular spectra. The importance of fast ejected electrons …

An Economical Field Datalogger, Norbert H. Maerz, M. B. Dusseault, R. W. Gillham

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Data acquisition is important in geotechnical and hydrological field investigations. Commercially available data acquisitions systems are often not well suited to field use, and can be costly. An alternative to buying a data acquisition system is to build one, and recent advances in computer micro-chip technology have made it easy to understand, design and build simple data acquisition devices.

The design of a data acquisition system developed at the University of Waterloo, along with an example of its use, is discussed in the paper. The intent was to sample 16 channels at 12 bit resolution for prolonged periods under adverse …

Microcomputer Image Analysis Of Rock Fabric, Norbert H. Maerz, C. P. Bennettt, B. A. Dony

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The behavior of many types of rock is largely dependent on the fabric of the rock mass. Current methods of manually measuring the discontinuity networks in rock masses are slow, tedious and error prone. The alternative is to make automated measurements of rock jointing parameters on digital images of rock faces in mines, tunnels, and surface excavations.

Photoanalysis techniques are being developed to measure various rock fabric parameters. Techniques presented here include the generation of a joint trace map from a photograph, and the measurement of simple statistics on the joint trace map. Methods are also presented for the determination …

Angular-Differential Studies Of Excitation In Quasi-One-Electron Collisions At "High" Energy, E. Redd, Timothy Gay, D. M. Blankenship, John T. Park, Jerry Peacher, Denver G. Seely Oct 1987

Angular-Differential Studies Of Excitation In Quasi-One-Electron Collisions At "High" Energy, E. Redd, Timothy Gay, D. M. Blankenship, John T. Park, Jerry Peacher, Denver G. Seely

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Qualitative differences have been observed between two types of "quasi-one-electron" collision systems. We have studied valence-electron excitation at "high" energy (relative collision velocities up to 0.5 a.u.) in the Mg++He and Na++H collision systems, and find that while Mg++He collisions are dominated by "direct" excitation, the Na++H collisions exhibit significant "molecular" excitation, even at the highest velocities. This behavior can be understood in terms of the molecular structure of the respective collision complexes, and the energy separation between the ground and first excited states of the valence electron.

Site-Diagonal T-Matrix Expansion For Anisotropic Transport And Percolation On Bond-Disordered Lattices, Paul Ernest Parris Oct 1987

Site-Diagonal T-Matrix Expansion For Anisotropic Transport And Percolation On Bond-Disordered Lattices, Paul Ernest Parris

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A study is made of the dynamical behavior of an electron or exciton undergoing anisotropic hopping on a d-dimensional bond-disordered lattice. Starting with a master equation for the site probabilities, an exact equation of motion is obtained for the probability currents that flow along the bonds connecting nearest-neighbor sites. Unlike the original master equation, the equation of motion which couples the microscopic currents contains the randomly distributed hopping rates in a form which is strictly site diagonal. The simplification that results leads to a new and exact expansion for the diffusion tensor in powers of an appropriately defined single-bond t …

Dynamic Structure Of A Nonaqueous Lamellar Liquid Crystal: Comparison With The Aqueous Case, Stig Friberg, Anthony J.I. Ward, David W. Larsen

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The lamellar phase of sodium dodecyl sulfate/decanol/glycerol has been compared to the analogous water-based system. Results of NMR studies of deuteriated alcohol and surfactant showed the bilayer to be more disordered in the nonaqueous case than in the phase made with water. The order profiles of the two systems, however, were of the same form, implying that the same essential packing requirements applied to each case. The overall increase in dynamic disorder observed in the glycerol system is a result of a transversely more disordered bilayer/solvent interface. © 1987, American Chemical Society. The intent of this investigation has been to find a robust algorithm for generation of the medial axis transform (MAT). The MAT is an invertible, object centered, shape representation defined as the collection of the centers of disks contained in the shape but not in any other such disk. Its uses include feature extraction, shape smoothing, and data compression. MAT generating algorithms include brushfire, Voronoi diagrams, and ridge following. An improved implementation of the ridge following algorithm is given. Orders of the MAT generating algorithms are compared. The effects of the number of edges in the polygonal approximation, shape area, …

Intensional Reasoning About Knowledge, Oliver B. Popov, Arlan R. Dekock Aug 1987

Intensional Reasoning About Knowledge, Oliver B. Popov, Arlan R. Dekock

Computer Science Technical Reports

As demands and ambitions increase in Artificial Intelligence, the need for formal systems that facilitate a study and a simulation of a machine cognition has become an inevitability. This paper explores and developes the foundations of a formal system for propositional reasoning about knowledge. The semantics of every meaningful expression in the system is fully determined by its intension, the set of complexes in which the expression is confirmed. The knowledge system is based on three zeroth-order theories of epistemic reasoning for consciousness, knowledge and entailed knowledge. The results presented in the paper determine the soundness and the completeness of …

Calculation Of The Thermophysical Properties Of Ground State Sodium Atoms, Paul M. Holland, Louis Biolsi Jr. Jul 1987

Calculation Of The Thermophysical Properties Of Ground State Sodium Atoms, Paul M. Holland, Louis Biolsi Jr.

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Transport properties of dilute monatomic gases depend on the two body interaction potentials between the atoms. When two ground state sodium atoms interact, they can follow either of two potential energy curves corresponding to the Na2 molecule in the X1Σ+g or the 3Σ+u. Transport collision integrals and second virial coefficients of monatomic sodium have been calculated by accurately representing quantum mechanical potential energy curves with the Hulburt-Hirschfelder potential. The generally good agreement of calculated viscosities and second virial coefficients with the available experimental viscosities and with previously calculated virial coefficients provides …

Measurement Of The Condensation Coefficient Of Water In The Umr Cloud Simulation Chamber, Daniel R. White, James L. Kassner, John C. Carstens, Donald E. Hagen, John L. Schmitt, Darryl J. Alofs, A. R. Hopkins, Max B. Trueblood, M. W. Alcorn

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Measurements of the condensation coefficient of water under conditions closely approximating those in natural atmospheric cloud have been made in the cooled-wall UMR cloud simulation chamber. Current measurements disclose a value of condensation coefficient near unity at the outset of the experiment, generally decreasing to lower values (~ .01) as the experiment progresses. The significance of the magnitude of condensation coefficient in atmospheric cloud is briefly discussed.

A Representation For Serial Robotic Tasks, Barry Ross Fox, Arlan R. Dekock May 1987

A Representation For Serial Robotic Tasks, Barry Ross Fox, Arlan R. Dekock

Computer Science Technical Reports

The representation for serial robotic tasks proposed in this thesis is a language of temporal constraints derived directly from a model of the space of serial plans. It was specifically designed to encompass problems that include disjunctive ordering constraints. This guarantees that the proposed language can completely and, to a certain extent, compactly represent all possible serial robotic tasks. The generality of this language carries a penalty. The proposed language of temporal constraints is NP-Complete. Specific methods have been demonstrated for normalizing constraints posed in this language in order to make subsequent sequencing and analysis more tractable. Using this language, …

We have measured cross sections for the correlated emission of two K x rays following the collision of hydrogenlike sulfur ions with H2 in the energy range between 70 and 160 MeV. The observation of the two correlated x rays is interpreted as a resonant capture of a target electron accompanied by simultaneous excitation of the projectile in the collision (RTE). By our distinguishing between Kα and Kβ lines, contributions from KLL and KLn (n≥M) resonances could be determined independently.

Transport Anisotropy And Percolation In The Two-Dimensional Random-Hopping Model, Kalyan P. Kundu, Paul Ernest Parris, Philip W. Phillips

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider hopping transport on an anisotropic two-dimensional square lattice. The displacements parallel to one axis are governed by uniform, nearest-neighbor hopping rates c, while the displacements parallel to the other axis are governed by static but spatially fluctuating rates wn. Adapting a new class of generating functions recently introduced for the random-trapping problem, we are able to obtain expressions for the mean-square displacement in the fluctuating direction through an exact decoupling of the effects due to displacements in the uniform direction. The resulting expressions for the low-frequency diffusion coefficient D(ε) are exact in the limits c →0 …

Variational Treatment Of A Harmonic Oscillator Coupled To A Dissipative Heat Bath, Paul Ernest Parris, Robert J. Silbey Feb 1987

Variational Treatment Of A Harmonic Oscillator Coupled To A Dissipative Heat Bath, Paul Ernest Parris, Robert J. Silbey

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider the problem of a single quantum oscillator coupled linearly to a heat bath of independent harmonic modes. An exact solution is presented for the system-oscillator observables of interest. The exact results are then used to evaluate the utility of a variational approach to the problem that has proven useful recently in elucidating the dynamics of dissipatively coupled systems. We find that the variational approach does provide a good description for most, but not all, observables of interest. Both the exact and the variational treatment demonstrate the important role played by the low-frequency bath modes in determining qualitative features …
