Searching For Optimal Protocols On The Xxz Model On The Square Lattice: An Introduction, Grace Ferrell Apr 2024

Searching For Optimal Protocols On The Xxz Model On The Square Lattice: An Introduction, Grace Ferrell

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

This paper offers a brief introduction to optimal protocols for variational quantum algorithms on the XXZ model on the square lattice, aimed at introducing the subfield to undergraduate students interested in theoretical quantum computing, especially those involved in similar research projects. I’ve tried to minimize jargon to make it more accessible to student researchers, but it still requires some math background. By simulating the most efficient ways to reach the ground state, future researchers can find patterns that could shed light on how to run large simulations on quantum computers.

Sequential Recommendation: From Representation Learning To Reasoning, Lei Wang Apr 2024

Sequential Recommendation: From Representation Learning To Reasoning, Lei Wang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The recommender system is a crucial component of today's online services. It helps users navigate through an overwhelmingly large number of items and discovering those that interest them. Unlike general recommender systems, which recommend items based on the user's overall preferences, sequential recommender systems consider the order of user-item interactions. Sequential recommendations aim to predict the next item a user will interact with, given a sequence of previously interacted items, while considering the short-term and long-term dependencies among items.

In this thesis, we focus on sequential recommendation methods: from representation learning to large language model (LLM)-based reasoning. On the one …

Synthesis Of Ddt-Related Pollutants Tris(4-Chlorophenyl) Methane (Tcpm) And Tris(4-Chlorophenyl)-Methanol (Tcpm-Oh) For Investigations Into Environmental Persistence, Chloe Anderson, Gregory O'Neil Apr 2024

Synthesis Of Ddt-Related Pollutants Tris(4-Chlorophenyl) Methane (Tcpm) And Tris(4-Chlorophenyl)-Methanol (Tcpm-Oh) For Investigations Into Environmental Persistence, Chloe Anderson, Gregory O'Neil

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

This study focuses on the synthesis of radiolabeled tris(4-chlorophenyl) methane (TCPM) and tris(4-chlorophenyl)-methanol (TCPM-OH), compounds identified as environmental contaminants linked to DDT production. Given their persistence and bioaccumulation in marine and terrestrial ecosystems, understanding their environmental fate is critical. This research aims to provide a detailed methodology for the synthesis of carbon-14 labeled TCPM and TCPM-OH to facilitate further studies on their degradation and impact. TCPM-OH was synthesized via two distinct routes. The first method involved esterification of 4-chlorobenzoic acid followed by a double Grignard addition. The second method started with chlorobenzene, which was brominated using gold-catalyzed N-bromosuccinimide (NBS), followed …

On Adaptivity And Randomness For Streaming Algorithms, Manuel Stoeckl

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

A streaming algorithm has a limited amount of memory and reads a long sequence (data stream) of input elements, one by one, and computes an output depending on the input. Such algorithms may be used in an online fashion, producing a sequence of intermediate outputs corresponding to the prefixes of the data stream. Adversarially robust streaming algorithms are required to give correct outputs with a desired probability even when the data stream is adaptively generated by an adversary that can see all intermediate outputs of the algorithm. This thesis binds together research on a variety of problems related to the …

Variable-Order Fractional Laplacian And Its Accurate And Efficient Computations With Meshfree Methods, Yixuan Wu, Yanzhi Zhang Apr 2024

Variable-Order Fractional Laplacian And Its Accurate And Efficient Computations With Meshfree Methods, Yixuan Wu, Yanzhi Zhang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The variable-order fractional Laplacian plays an important role in the study of heterogeneous systems. In this paper, we propose the first numerical methods for the variable-order Laplacian (-Δ) α (x) / 2 with 0 < α (x) ≤ 2, which will also be referred as the variable-order fractional Laplacian if α(x) is strictly less than 2. We present a class of hypergeometric functions whose variable-order Laplacian can be analytically expressed. Building on these analytical results, we design the meshfree methods based on globally supported radial basis functions (RBFs), including Gaussian, generalized inverse multiquadric, and Bessel-type RBFs, to approximate the variable-order Laplacian (-Δ) α (x) / 2. Our meshfree methods integrate the advantages of both pseudo-differential and hypersingular integral forms of the variable-order fractional Laplacian, and thus avoid numerically approximating the hypersingular integral. Moreover, our methods are simple and flexible of domain geometry, and their computer implementation remains the same for any dimension d ≥ 1. Compared to finite difference methods, our methods can achieve a desired accuracy with much fewer points. This fact makes our method much attractive for problems involving variable-order fractional Laplacian where the number of points required is a critical cost. We then apply our method to study solution behaviors of variable-order fractional PDEs arising in different fields, including transition of waves between classical and fractional media, and coexistence of anomalous and normal diffusion in both diffusion equation and the Allen–Cahn equation. These results would provide insights for further understanding and applications of variable-order fractional derivatives.

Demographic Consequences Of Off-River Nesting For Piping Plover (Charadrius Melodus) And Interior Least Tern (Sternula Antillarum Athalassos) In The Lower Platte River System, Nebraska, Elsa M. Forsberg

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Piping plovers (Charadrius melodus; hereafter, plovers) and interior least terns (Sternula antillarum athalassos; hereafter, terns) are two avian species that nest along the Lower Platte River system (LPRS) in Nebraska. In the LPRS, river sandbars provide natural nesting habitat, but off-river sites provide substantial nesting habitat especially when sandbar habitat is scarce. Although presumed to be important for the persistence of plovers and terns, off-river habitat is not self-sustaining and predicted to decline. Understanding the vital rates of plovers and terns in the LPRS will inform the role of off- river sites in the future conservation …

We report a simple, inexpensive design of a fluorescence microscope with light-emitting diode (LED) excitation for detection of labeled and unlabeled microorganisms in mineral substrates. The use of deep UV (DUV) excitation with visible emission requires no specialized optics or slides and can be implemented easily and inexpensively using an oblique illumination geometry. DUV excitation (<280 >nm) is preferable to near UV (365 nm) for avoidance of mineral autofluorescence. When excited with DUV, unpigmented bacteria show two emission peaks: one in the near UV ∼320 nm, corresponding to proteins, and another peak in the blue to green range, corresponding to …

Mean Flow And Dispersion In The Western Mediterranean Sea From Drifter Observations, Helga Huntley, James Turbett, A.D. Kirwan, Jr., Pierre-Marie Poulain

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Currents in the ocean distribute water masses and everything floating in them. To understand how fast the water (and its flotsam) travels and how effectively it mixes, we need to study the flow statistics. There are two types of measurements of ocean currents: Eulerian measurements that look at how the ocean velocities change at a stationary point on the Earth; and Lagrangian measurements that follow a water mass. Dispersion and mixing is generally best captured by Lagrangian measurements. At the submesoscale (~10-1 – 10 km), the observational tool of choice are drifters, or floating buoys, tethered to a drogue that …

Statistics Pedagogy: Modernizing Introductory College Statistics Courses For Students With Non-Stem Majors, Samantha Hazan

Honors Projects in Mathematics and Economics

With the growing role of technology in society, statistics and statistical literacy have become ever more important. In reaction to this, many colleges now require students, regardless of major, to take an introductory statistics course. The intention behind this is to create a workforce of people who are capable of reasoning about statistics. While good intentioned, preliminary research suggests that current statistics curriculum is not effective in instilling the necessary skills to achieve statistical literacy, particularly for students not majoring in a STEM field. For this reason, this thesis looks to empirically evaluate how the disjuncture between teaching statistics and …

“Making The Bed”: Challenging Ideologies Of Ownership, Nonlocality, And Romanticism In The Age Of The Anthropocene, Ainsley P. Foster

Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

The current Age of the Anthropocene marks a recent and rapid transition into a period in climate history that is notably defined by human impact. Modern Western sentiments of grief, frustration, and romanticism as a result of the interplay between domestic and corporate spaces seem to culminate in an overall attitude of apathy and acceptance of the Age of the Anthropocene. Various art forms collaborate to create the current conversation of the causatory and reactionary relationship that humans have with the Anthropocene, offering interpretations of how individuals and corporations view ownership of and responsibilities to the environment. There is a …
